Welcome Letter from President
Spring..................................... 13
A warm welcome to West Yellowstone and Yellowstone Country! And, a Happy 100th Birthday to the National Parks, including Yellowstone Park located at our back door.
Summer.................................. 14
Early guides lead the earliest visitors following the Madison River through the area that would someday become Yellowstone Park. This area was called the “West End” or “Boundary,” because this was the ending point for Yellowstone visitors arriving by rail.
Fall.......................................... 16 Winter..................................... 18
The Union Pacific Depot was built in 1908 and opened in 1909 to service arriving railroad guests. These guests would depart the train, and stop for meals and refreshment before departing with a stagecoach touring company into Yellowstone. The original depot building is still in use as the Yellowstone Historic Center Museum. Over a century later, West Yellowstone is still the year-round gateway to Yellowstone, three surrounding national forests, blue-ribbon trout streams, and beautiful mountain lakes.
Dream Plans........................... 22 Yellowstone National Park...... 24 Museum & Historic Sites........ 30 Wildlife.................................... 36
No matter the season, you will find breathtaking scenery and an adventure around every corner. Long summer days offer unlimited access to scenic drives, hiking or horseback riding, whitewater rafting or fishing in crystal-clear rivers. Spend the night dining on local cuisine, watching a rodeo or play, listening to a free concert in the park, or strolling the streets and shopping our unique stores. (My personal favorite – try a huckleberry shake or ice cream cone!)
Photography........................... 38 Calendar of Events................. 40 Hiking & Biking....................... 42 On the Water.......................... 47
Fall brings crisp, cool nights and warm, sunny afternoons that are especially memorable when combined with the sounds of bugling elk and honking geese. Wildlife is easy to find and photograph, trout fishing is at its finest, and mountain trails beg to be explored.
Fishing.................................... 48 Day Trips................................ 50
In winter, snow-covered landscapes, frosty trees and steamy geysers create a wondrous setting. Breathtaking tours by snowcoach and snowmobile offer indelible memories. Snowmobilers and cross-country skiers use groomed trails to explore the national forests surrounding West Yellowstone.
Camping................................. 53 Nordic Ski............................... 57 Snowmobiling......................... 59
In spring, the land awakens. Spring cyclers and wildlife photographers are rewarded with the sight of bouncing baby bison, elk calves, and coyote pups among green meadows and colorful waves of wildflowers.
Eat and Shop.......................... 60 Local Essentials..................... 61 Includes information on lodging, activities, attractions, dining, shopping, services, utilities, travel, transportation and life in West Yellowstone.
No matter what the season, we can help you plan that memorable moment or find that new adventure. Stop and visit with our local “experts,” at the West Yellowstone Visitor Center, just one block west of the park entrance. We’d love to share adventures with you!

SPRING
Neal Herbert, flickr.com/yellowstonenps
Babes, Bears, and Bikes Spring is a time of change and renewal in West Yellowstone. From mid-March to mid-April, the west entrance to Yellowstone opens to people-powered vehicles only. These “cycle-only” days allow bikers to see the first splashes of color as green sedges and bright yellow monkey-flowers emerge amidst dwindling snow banks. Bison trudge along the roads and elk feed along the rivers.

May brings bison calves and bison jams on the roadways. Bison begin calving in mid-April and by May you can start to see hundreds of bright reddish-brown calves among the bison
herds. The bison gather in traditional “nursery” areas such as Fountain Flats just north of Old Faithful or in areas along rivers such as Lamar and Hayden Valleys. It the best time for bear sightings as grizzly and black bears make their way down from higher elevations to the meadows and rivers. Where else but Yellowstone can you have a ring-side seat to witness the sheer strength of a bear tearing apart a rotten tree stump or carcass? And, then just a few miles later, watch as a sow gently noses her wayward cubs across a busy road with everyone stopped for the first “bear jam” of the season?

summer Endless Adventures
In addition to regal Yellowstone National Park right next door with its famous geysers, wildlife and waterfalls, there’s adventure to be found just to the West. Hebgen Lake, with its miles and miles of shoreline offers camping, boating, canoeing and the best still water fishing in Montana. Or, take an afternoon and learn to kayak on this clear mountain lake surrounded by beautiful mountains. Just beyond is Earthquake Lake, formed the night in 1959 that a 7.5 quake rocked the Madison Valley and a mountain fell. With summer comes a choice of activities; weekly Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo, the Yellowstone Historic Museum Center, daily Yellowstone Ranger talks, and other programs just for kids like the Junior Smokejumper’s Program. Don’t miss a genuine small town 4th of July, where anyone can be in the parade, listen to live music, enjoy barbecues at the City Park, and end the day with an incredible fireworks display set against a backdrop of mountains.

FALL
Fall brings spectacular scenery and the annual elk mating season where huge bull elk battle for their harems with eerie echoing bugles across wide valleys. Cooler fall temperatures create spectacular photo opportunities at Old Faithful and other geysers in Yellowstone Park. It’s the best time of the year for mountain biking, road cycling, hiking, and photography in Yellowstone and the surrounding National Forests. Spawning runs of big brown and battling rainbow trout migrate from Hebgen Lake up the Madison, Gallatin, and Firehole Rivers. This makes West Yellowstone the prime fishing destination each fall, earning the title as one of the “Top 10 Trout Towns in America” by Forbes Magazine.
Even a rainy fall day is fun with a visit to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. Meet the two wolf packs or different resident grizzly bears, observe the raptors, talk to a Naturalist, and check out the “Keeper Kids Program.” Next door the movie, “Yellowstone,” plays daily at the Yellowstone Giant Screen Theater with a six story movie screen. Late fall features the annual West Yellowstone Old Faithful Cycle Tour. This roundtrip cycle ride circles through Yellowstone National Park from West Yellowstone to Old Faithful and back. With feed stations along the way and a snag wagon to grab a lift if you get tired, it is the perfect family cycling event. Or, join the Yellowstone Rendezvous Trail Race – a half-marathon that takes place entirely on groomed forest service trails.

The Boundary Ski Trail (pet-friendly) and Yellowstone Park’s Riverside Trail also start from West Yellowstone. If you’re fortunate enough to experience Yellowstone in the winter, you’re in for a rare treat. The snow covered landscape, frozen waterfalls and frosted trees when, contrasted with geysers and other geothermal features, create a surreal winterscape. If you’re lucky enough to venture into the backcountry, you will encounter a quiet calm that for some is a transcendental experience.

NPS in YNP : 100 Years of Stewardship by Michael Fox, Curator of History, museum of the Rockies
The National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2016 but it celebrates the 144th year since the founding of the world’s first national park. Yellowstone National Park was established under President Ulysses S. Grant’s administration in 1872 and operated under the US Department of the Interior for 44 years before the appearance of the first dedicated park ranger. By 1915 the system of national parks consisted of 9 parks with 3 more added the following year. Prior to creation of the National Park Service, each of these parks was individually managed under the broad administrative umbrella of the Department of Interior. Prior to the creation of the Nation Park Service a seasoned force of US Army troops enforced park rules in Yellowstone. Sent to the park in 1886 by General of the Army Philip Sheridan, the army assisted the Department of the Interior in preventing poaching and keeping the peace within the boundaries of the 2.2 million acre reserve. The units assigned to this duty were usually cavalry troopers who had experience with the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather of the northern Rocky Mountains. The Department of Interior, long the home of orphan government programs, welcomed the army’s assistance as it had no law enforcement branch of its own. These were formative years for Yellowstone National Park and for the idea of what national parks should, and should not, become. Federal officials and visitors alike feared the commercialization of their parks and carefully monitored the 24 West Yellowstone Montana Travel Planner 2016/17
Department of the Interior’s activities. The government was not, however, in any position to offer the sorts of amenities that visitors to the park desired and from its earliest days Yellowstone hosted independent business operators who provided services such as lodging, transportation and selling supplies to tourists. Operating under federal contracts or concessions these businesses are known as concessioners in national parks and as visitation grew so did the need for the visitor services that they provided. By the 1910s two railroads served Yellowstone National Park and the idea of allowing automobiles into the area was also being discussed. Again, officials and visitors grew concerned about the park’s operations, fearing that increased visitorship would overwhelm the capabilities of the keepers of the nation’s parks. Eleven sites had been designated as national parks by 1911 and the broad diversity of the now growing system needed its own dedicated service. In September of that year Secretary of the Interior Walter L. Fisher convened the first Annual National Parks Conference in Yellowstone. The conference brought together superintendents of nation’s parks as well as representatives of other federal departments that oversaw national monuments, battlefields and forest reserves. The discussion quickly turned to jurisdiction and the multi-faceted responsibilities that these various agencies exercised within the parks. Additionally, the US Army had by this time grown weary of its job as the park’s police force and supported the idea of the Department of the Interior taking these duties over. DestinationYellowstone.com
The idea of a singular division within the Department of the Interior to oversee national park operations was born at this meeting and another held in 1912. By 1915 Steven Mather, assistant to Secretary Franklin K. Lane, was ready with a plan. Meeting at the University of California at Berkeley, and in the shadow of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition across the bay in San Francisco, Mather presented his idea for the creation of a National Park Service that would operate the nation’s parks and work with concessioners and other business interests to enhance the public’s ability to enjoy them. With the support of both federal officials and the public the organic act of August 25, 1916 creating the National Park Service was signed into law with Mather as its first director. The agency was quickly vaulted into service and immediately set about both enforcing park laws and serving as interpreters of natural wonders placed under their care. The timing of the transition from US Army to National Park Service administration was critical in Yellowstone as automobiles had been allowed into the park for the first time in 1915. By the 1916 season the underpowered and often unpredictable machines were scaring horses and transporting tourists from one end of the park to the other. A year later, all horse-drawn passenger transportation in the park was switched to motorbuses and touring cars. A revolution in the ways in which visitors toured the park took place in the span of just a few short years. As the world’s first national park, Yellowstone was, and is, seen as the flagship of the National Park system. It was little surprise that Mather’s protégé and assistant director, Horace M. Albright, soon took on the superintendent position in DestinationYellowstone.com

Yellowstone. Under Albright’s administration Yellowstone tourism flourished. Soldiers returning from the battlefields of Europe were inspired to see the sights of their country and a “See America First” campaign, initiated by railroads hoping to keep tourist dollars in the United States rather than overseas, rapidly picked up momentum. Albright embraced the movement seeing railroad promoters as partners in bringing new visitors to national parks. In 1929, Albright left Yellowstone to take over Steven Mather’s job as National Park Service Director. By the mid 1920s the agency had adopted its own uniform. Based on the US Army’s uniform of the 1910s, the outfit consisted of a campaign hat, woolen military blouse and jodhpurs, riding boots and a Sam Browne belt. Park rangers wore their own agency’s badges and divisional insignia as well. Uniforms became a topic of interest in Yellowstone as women began to join the ranks of the park rangers. Albright hired Isabel Bassett in 1920, followed by Marguerite Lindsley and Frieda Nelson in 1925. West Yellowstone Montana Travel Planner 2016/17 25
The National Park Service evolved into the primary interpretive entity in parks like Yellowstone during the 1920s. Rangers did more than just enforce the rules, they led tours of the geological features and taught visitors about the plants and animals that lived in the park. Education and interpretation remain primary responsibilities of the National Park Service and the 1930s saw the rising importance of scientific research in the parks as well. The 1930s and early 1940s were a time of declining visitorship in America’s national parks. The national economic depression and the war that followed it prevented tourists from reaching areas like Yellowstone and shortages and rationing of everything from gasoline to baking flour discouraged them further. The end of World War II, however, marked a great renaissance for tourism nationwide. Just as the doughboys of WWI had flocked to their national parks, returning WWII veterans took advantage of a post-war economic boom and took to the highways. Yellowstone tourism surged. The parks themselves, however, were not ready for the onslaught and visitors encountered crumbling roads, poor accommodations and the evidence of more than a decade of neglect as the nation had concentrated its efforts on fighting the depression and the war. The National Park Service recognized their visitors’ needs and inaugurated a ten-year, system-wide program to update and upgrade park facilities in 1956. Known as Mission 66, the program built new hotels, repaired aging infrastructure and brought Yellowstone into the modern age of tourism. Space-age architecture was included in Yellowstone’s new Canyon Village while elderly structures like the Canyon Hotel were removed. 26 West Yellowstone Montana Travel Planner 2016/17

As Mission 66 concluded in 1966, the National Park Service again sought new directions as the protectors and promoters of the nation’s parks. Conservation was a new concept for many Americans who were again concerned about the commercialization of the nation’s recreational areas and the agency moved forward with plans to professionalize its scientific efforts. Demonstrating its commitment to conserving natural places while inviting the public to enjoy them, the park service continues to balance these often-competing missions. The great Yellowstone fires of 1988 directed national attention to the Service’s conservation strategies and though initially seen as catastrophic, fire is now recognized as a natural part of park resource management.

Today the National Park service continues to welcome visitors from to Yellowstone from every nation on earth. Record-breaking visitation numbers are almost routine as more than 3 million people pass through the park every year. Still, the National Park Service retains vestiges of its early days in the park. From the WWI era campaign hats to the rangers’ knowledge of geology, plants and animals, the National Park Service can be proud of the 100 years professional management that they continue to bring to the public in Yellowstone.

yellowstone historic center Since being established as the world's first National Park in1872, curious travelers have ventured from every corner of the world to experience the place called "Wonderland." The Yellowstone Historic Center Museum, located in the Union Pacific Depot in West Yellowstone’s Historic District, aims to share the unique story of travel to and through Yellowstone National Park. The museum features exhibits on travel from the stage coach era, through the railroad heyday to the advent of the automobile and beyond. The museum showcases a number of historically preserved and refurbished vehicles including stagecoaches and freight wagons. A must-see is the Mount Washburn Special, one of only three coaches built specifically for the trip to the top of Mount Washburn and back. The Historic Center also has exhibits on the heritage of the West Yellowstone area. Learn about the early residents of West Yellowstone as well as the Union Pacific staff that spent their summers in town. Experience the grandeur of railroad architecture of the early 1900s by taking a self-guided tour of the Oregon Short Line Historic District, the largest intact assemblage of historic railroad buildings in the United States. In 2016 the Yellowstone Historic Center museum will have an encore season of the exhibit “Meet me at Old Faithful Inn” highlighting Union Pacific’s Yellowstone exhibit at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915, and its impact on travel to Yellowstone. This is the largest collection of memorabilia related to the Panama Pacific International Exhibition currently on display in the world. In addition, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the first full year of automotive travel in Yellowstone. The Yellowstone Historic Center will commemorate this anniversary with a new exhibit on how the automobile, transcontinental road systems, and “See America First” publicity efforts made 1916 a milestone year for the Park and its west entrance. For the first time, travel through Yellowstone was not just for the wealthy, but for Americans from all walks of life. Yellowstone Bear World offers up-close wildlife encounters— and the chance to bottle-feed bear cubs Courtney Ferguson views Yellowstone Bear World as his family serving families. After all, his family has owned and operated the wildlife attraction since it opened in 1998. “We’re a drive-through wildlife park offering families encounters with majestic animals that can sometimes be hard to spot in Yellowstone, including bears, wolves, elk, moose, and bison,” Ferguson says, of the 120-acre wildlife park. “Folks can also bottlefeed bear cubs for a memory that will last a lifetime!” In addition to self-guided drive-through tours, Yellowstone Bear World offers guided tours in an open-air vehicle that offer birds-eye views of North American wildlife, a petting zoo, and an amusement park that includes train rides and a rollercoaster. And with all-day access, families can drive through time and again.

“On the guided tours, we talk about the personalities and traits of each animal in the park, and, of course, the fascinating hibernation cycles of the bears,” Ferguson says. “It’s also a great photo opportunity because the animals come right up to our guided-tour vehicle where visitors can feed them.” “We opened the park because of my father’s experiences as a child,” Ferguson says. “His family would take trips to Yellowstone, and be fascinated by all the animals and the ‘bear jams” that would clog the road for hours. We wanted to recreate that childhood experience here.” Yellowstone Bear World is located near Rexburg, Idaho, along the southwestern edge of the Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone Bear World is open seven days a week from Memorial Day Weekend through mid-October. Weekend-only access begins April 16.

In springtime, Yellowstone’s ‘babes’ are out in force, offering incredible photo opportunities. Small groups of bison (buffalo) are on the move along roadways and rivers. This is the time of year when the herds start to move from their annual nursery grounds to locations throughout Yellowstone. Check the large areas along the Lower Geyser Basin area. Along Fountain Flat Drive, you can see hundreds of bison cows and calves. Early evening is a great time to sit and watch as the calves shake off their late afternoon naps and almost frantically begin to run and jump. They resemble large, playful, bright red dogs as they run, butt heads, and play in meadows. Elk can still be found along the rivers and in wet meadows. Pregnant cows should be dropping calves soon, if not already. Watch along the edges of the pines in early evening for any new calves. This is the best time of year to spot bears feeding in the lower altitudes in Yellowstone before they head back to upper elevations and cooler forested areas for the summer months. During the spring, grizzlies will scavenge for winter-killed elk and bison carcasses, road kills, and carcasses more recently killed by wolves and cougars. Some of the best grizzly sightings have been along the Lamar Valley road and across the Yellowstone River throughout the Hayden Valley. While the bison rut can begin as early as mid-July, the real show is in August in. In Hayden Valley thousands of bison gather for the annual mating. Bulls communicate and dominate by a series of sounds that range from snorts and grunts to all-out bellows. For most of the year, bison slowly trod and graze throughout the park unless being chased by a predator. However, during August, you can frequently see bison running in groups for short distances. Until you see it, it is hard to believe that America’s largest land mammal is capable of such agility as speeds up to 30-35 mph.

Visiting Yellowstone Park in the fall has been one of the best kept travel secrets for seasoned park travelers. This is the time of year when the sounds of the rivers and thump of the thermals replaces the summer sound of summer’s stream of passing cars. Now, is the time to see the unusual – a favorite bird sitting on a still pond, a young moose meandering along a stream, or a group of playful of otters jumping on and off a log on the banks of the Yellowstone River. Every turn brings a photo waiting to be taken. Snow-capped peaks expose their true heights, while snowdrifts outline crags and crannies harder to spot in other seasons. A coating of frost lines riverbanks, while blocks of ice (formerly white foam) bob down the rivers. Thermals are more noticeable as the colder fall temperatures create billowing clouds and highlight soft steamy tendrils from hidden corners. This is a time to walk the boardwalks, sometimes with just a grazing elk cow and calf for company. One of Yellowstone’s most famous events is the annual elk rut or mating season. As the older cows enter estrus (early September), they begin to herd together along with calves and one year old bulls. Older bulls begin to hang around the edges of the cow herd and are constantly acting out to drive off other bulls and retain dominance. Watch for the large bulls in the Canyon, Gibbon Meadow, and Mammoth Hot Springs areas. The big Madison River bull elk really work their 'harems' along the Madison River meadows. The big bulls push out other spike bulls and constantly herd their cows, even during the afternoons. They demonstrate their dominance by tearing up the ground and small bushes, even staging mock battles. Bulls also attract females and signal dominance with “bugling” … long sustained bugles that end with that low, guttural thumping. During the fall, Yellowstone valleys echo with the eerie sound of bulls challenging each other by bugling. After the rut, the bulls once again wander off and form their own bachelor groups. Focus turns from mating to grazing as the bulls work on regaining up to one hundred pounds that they have lost during the rut. Winter is just around the corner. DestinationYellowstone.com
Perhaps the most famous bird nest in the Park is located six miles east of the West Entrance on the south side of the road in a large dead fir. Look for the large snag supporting a big stick nest near the top approximately 100 yards from the road. Locals claimed that there have been eagles nesting here for well over 50 years. Yellowstone is home to the largest population of trumpeter swans in the Lower 48 states. There are basically two trumpeter swan flocks in Yellowstone, a resident year-round population and a migratory winter population. The resident population can vary from 28-55 swans, whereas the winter population varies from 75-119 swans. Seven miles in from the West Entrance is an area called ‘Seven Mile Bridge.’ Nesting trumpeter swans, soras, herons, and common snipe can all be seen from the turnouts there. Hayden Valley is another location for heron sightings.

Migratory birds can be seen including savannah sparrows, ruby-crowned kinglets, yellow-rumped warblers, and mountain bluebirds. Ravens are also fun to watch just for their mischievous antics.

Birding
Over 311 species of birds have been documented in Yellowstone since it was first established in 1872. Arm yourself with binoculars, a Yellowstone Bird Field Checklist, a camera with a good zoom, and a good illustrated guide, and you are ready to go birding.
Near Fishing Bridge, look for White Pelican and both Barrow's and Common Goldeneye, as well as Bald Eagles and Osprey. Watch for Sandhill Cranes in the Fountain Flats area. Some of the park’s best birding can be found by driving from West Thumb, on Yellowstone Lake, east and north to Tower and west to Mammoth Hot Springs. As you skirt Yellowstone Lake to Fishing Bridge, stop where you can to scan for Common Loon, American White Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, Trumpeter Swan, Barrow’s Goldeneye, California Gull, and other water birds, as well as Osprey and Bald Eagle. Along the Yellowstone River, watch for the White-throated Swift flying through canyons or the American Dipper among the rocks in the rapids areas. This area is also home to the rare Harlequin Duck. At Mammoth, watch for the Black-billed Magpie, Mountain Bluebird and Townsend's Solitaire. American Dippers should be active along the rushing stream, and with luck you may see a Lazuli Bunting above on the rugged cliffs of McMinn Bench. If you are lucky enough to make it to Beartooth Pass (on the Beartooth Scenic Highway), watch for Peregrine Falcons and Golden Eagles, as well as migrant summer visitors, American Pipits and Black Rosy-finches. The area west of Yellowstone also has great birding and wildlife viewings, especially in the spring and fall. Look at the West of Yellowstone map on page 8 for ideas.

ARTICLE & PHOTOS By Carolyn L. Fox Photography isn’t just snapping pictures of beautiful scenes, loved ones or animals. It’s preserving memories of things you treasure. Through photography you can bring a person from their spot in the world to yours. You can show them things they’ll never see and open worlds to them that they’ll never experience. They can stand with you among the geological wonders of Yellowstone or watch as a grizzly bear nurses her cubs. That’s how powerful a photograph can be if the subject is captured correctly. Photographs are created by making choices and making the right choices depends on the knowledge of the photographer. A photographer friend of mine says that you don’t “take” a picture; you “make” a picture. He’s absolutely correct, because YOU decide on the subject, the lighting, what’s to be included in the picture, the time of day, etc. and that’s what “makes” a picture. Great photographs are not necessarily the result of having the best equipment in the world. It’s how you use what you have. Anyone can “make” an incredible photograph by following some basic principles. One thing that is absolutely crucial is knowing how to use your camera correctly, whether it’s an iPhone or an expensive camera. The time to figure that out is before you get to your destination, not when you’re trying to get that once in a lifetime photograph. Read your manual, take some practice shots and always check your camera settings before taking a 38 West Yellowstone Montana Travel Planner 2016/17
You’ll have a more interesting picture if you compose in thirds, placing your subject to the side of the frame and leaving some space in front of your subject, especially if the subject is a person or an animal. Placing the subject in the center normally creates a more static picture and that’s not what you want. Lines that lead towards your subject will help the viewer see what you want them to see and feel what you felt when you created the picture. Try to take pictures in the early morning or in the evening when the light is nice instead of in the middle of the day when the sun is bright and the shadows harsh. Don’t put the camera away when it’s foggy. Those days are great for environmental and surreal pictures. Make sure your shutter speed is fast enough and that you have enough light. Hold your camera steady and use a tripod if possible. Raise your ISO if needed. A little noise is better than a blurry picture. Capture moments! Think about what story you want to tell, how you want to tell it and what you want the viewer to “see” when they view the image that you’ve created. ON THE WATER
Among the most perfect ways to start a West Yellowstone vacation day may be kayaking or canoeing out in the early morning light with the mist still rising from the waters of Hebgen or Quake Lake. An afternoon of exploring brings an awesome awareness of the dynamic forces that formed the Madison River Canyon. On a hot day, can anything bring more family fun and challenge than a kayak flotilla water fight? And yet there’s more. What about kayaking the lakes within Yellowstone? Full and multiple-day adventures are available, including those tailored for families with children. Whether inclination runs to solitude or multitude, a kayak adventure underscores magical memories of a Yellowstone vacation. Cool off on a warm summer day with a float tube trip. Floating the warm water of the Madison River under the blue skies of Montana is a fantastic way to relax and relieve stress. This is a great way to unwind and spend time with family and friends.
you on a scenic float through the canyon, or a fast-paced trip through the whitewater. It will be a journey your family won’t soon forget! Hebgen Lake is Montana’s premiere still water fishing lake with rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout averaging 15-20". Ice moves off in April, and by July the water warms for swimming. July-September is the best time for water sports. Hebgen accommodates both large and small boats, personal watercraft, kayaks, canoes, paddleboats and sailboats. Watch the shores for wildlife sightings including otters, beavers, foxes, wolves, deer, moose, elk, bear, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats. Ospreys, bald and golden eagles, hawks, herons, pelicans, swans and many varieties of waterfowl make this a great birding location.
Paddle boarding is also becoming a favorite activity on the waters surrounding West Yellowstone. The quiet bays of Hebgen Lake, north of town, provide the perfect place to practice your technique. And the views of the surrounding mountains can’t be beat.
At six miles long, 180+ feet deep, with submerged trees, Quake Lake offers great fishing for brown and goodsized rainbow trout. A boat ramp offer access for small motorboats, canoes or kayaks. Kayak rentals, tours and lessons are available. Marinas sell gas and supplies; motorboat, canoe, and kayak rentals.
For the more adventuresome, try a raft trip on the rivers just outside of West Yellowstone. Local companies are ready to take

fishing West Yellowstone earned the title of America’s “Top Ten Fishing Towns” (Forbes Magazine) for unparalleled year-round fishing. Top blue-ribbon trout streams surround West Yellowstone: the Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone and the Henrys Fork of the Snake. The upper Madison, the Firehole, and the Gibbon Rivers are just minutes away in Yellowstone. Unbeatable float and deepwater fishing abound on Hebgen Lake and Earthquake Lake, Henrys Lake and Island Park Reservoir. Hebgen Lake, located just nine miles northwest of town, is approximately fifteen miles long and four miles wide. Hebgen Lake is known as one of Montana’s premier stillwater and dry fly fishing fisheries. Several marinas offer docks, as well as convenient boating (including rentals) and fishing supplies.
Make sure to obtain a regulations book as it contains specific information about restrictions, as well as maps and locations. Regulations are often complex concerning fishing seasons, temporary and/or permanent area closures, tackle restrictions, and species specific number and size limits. The Madison River, both inside and outside Yellowstone Park, is at its prime, along with the Gibbon and Firehole rivers inside the park. You can often find some solitary fishing and match the hatch fishing. Depending on weather conditions you may see Pale Morning Duns, Blue-Winged Olives, or two species of caddis. Fishing isn’t only a summer excursion. Fly fisherman can be seen wading waste deep in the icy waters of the Gallatin and Madison Rivers, and ice fishing is quickly becoming a popular winter experience. Hebgen Lake features ice fishing including a North American Ice Fishing Circuit (NAIFC) qualifier tournaments and events. The annual tournament is winter's equivalent of summer's big time bass and walleye tournaments, and is filled with seminars, a kid's free ice fishing clinic, and the fishing competition itself.

Most waters in Yellowstone Park are open for fishing from late May to early November, between the hours of 5am and 10pm. A valid Yellowstone National Park fishing license is required for all anglers over 12 years of age. Licenses are available at local fly shops or Yellowstone Park Visitor Centers or ranger stations.
Fishing Hebgen Lake turns into an addiction in August as big rising browns and rainbows (“Gulpers”) in the 2-4lb range consistently hit the surface of the lake chasing the Callibaetis hatch. Many of the fly fishing shops in West Yellowstone offer a package for beginners, complete with equipment and instruction including ‘walk trips’. Beginning and novice fly fishers can quickly learn the fundamentals of fly casting, knot tying, fly selection, line control, reading water and safe wading. Take a day and enjoy the waters of Montana with an experienced guide and make it a trip to remember. Be careful as you may become hooked for life.

Float trips are a fun and exciting way to experience the water near West Yellowstone. Float trips allow fisherman to fish more miles of water in a day than you would be able to do on foot. The spectacular views of the surrounding area and wildlife, are truly a memorable experience for novice or advanced anglers alike. Most local shops offer a wide variety of fishing experiences including full day trips to half day trips, and even some evening guided trips.

Day Trips from west yellowstone Madison River Canyon Earthquake Area The Night the Mountain Fell Leave West Yellowstone on US 20 over the Targhee Pass into Idaho and make a right turn onto Idaho 87. At the next junction you will turn right again onto US 287. The driving adventure begins as you pass through the Madison River Canyon which, in 1959, was struck by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded on the North American continent. Measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, the earthquake caused an enormous landslide and sent 80 million tons of rock tumbling into the canyon, obstructing the flow of the Madison River. The water soon backed up behind the fallen rocks and formed Earthquake Lake. Today the Madison River Canyon Earthquake Area is of great scientific and general interest. Stop at the Visitors Center to see a short movie and pick up one of the driving tour brochures. While there walk the trail to the Memorial Boulder and overlook. Then as you drive along the banks of the water, the effect of the changing earth can be seen all around. Be sure to stop at the pullouts and scenic overlooks, go to the Ghost Village and visit Refuge Point. Virginia and Nevada Cities Virginia City was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Virginia City once included more than a thousand buildings and vied with Helena to become the Capital of Montana. The area holds claim to the largest collection of Gold Rush era buildings in the West. Currently 50 standing structures date back to the height of the Gold Rush when nearly 20,000 hardy souls called it home. At its peak, Nevada City boasted dozens of stores and cabins. In 1872, the town had a miner’s store, a brewery, a butcher, a blacksmith, a livery stable and a Masonic hall. But by 1876, boom turned to bust, and Nevada City became a Ghost Town and currently is the site of many of Montana’s relocated historic buildings. Among them from more recent times are the cabins used in the PBS Frontier House series. Make sure to bring lots of quarters to visit the Music Hall which features old time pipe organs, movie machines and great novelty inventions. During peak season, take a ride on the Alder Gulch Shortline Railroad that runs between Virginia City and Nevada City. Lewis & Clark Caverns & Three Forks Though Lewis & Clark never saw the caverns, they were discovered in 1892, and are Montana's first and best-known state park. The Caverns showcase one of the most highly decorated limestone caverns in the Northwest. Naturally air conditioned, these spectacular caves, lined with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and helicitites, date back through time. See the geologic development, the history of early exploration and gain an insight into the delicate ecology of this world without light. Plan to spend a minimum of two hours to hike two miles on a guided tour through the caverns

Visit the Missouri Headwaters State Park where Lewis and Clark had followed the Missouri River hoping to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Today you can walk in their footsteps and see the convergence of the Jefferson, Gallatin, and Madison Rivers. The area abounds with interpretive displays highlighting the Native American tribes that roamed the area. Then on to Three Forks, and a stop to visit the Headwaters Heritage Museum down town Three Forks. You will want to include a visit to the Madison Buffalo Jump. The Buffalo Jump is located about 6 and one half miles south of the Interstate 90 at Logan, Montana. This is one of the most spectacular Buffalo Jumps or Pishkins to be found in the United States dating back 4,000 years or more to the time when the natives had neither horses nor weapons to get their food. Learn about the (ahwa waki) buffalo runner. Big Springs & Johnny Sack Cabin Big Springs is the head waters of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River. 120 million gallons of water flow from this spring every day making it one of the largest springs in the country. Big Springs is also spawning grounds for rainbow trout. You can feed the fish while you’re there but fishing is not allowed in this protected area. The enormous rainbow trout can be viewed from both sides of the bridge. Be sure to bring some bread to feed the fish, mallard ducks and the resident muskrat. Watch down stream as it is common to see a moose feeding in the water. Then take a short easy walk on the interpretive trail board walk that leads downstream along the Big Springs National Water Trail. On the Historic Register, the Johnny Sack Cabin can be reached via a short, paved walking path starting in the campground at Big Springs. The cabin's unique location, construction, and furnishings provide for an interesting visit. The cabin was started in 1932 and completed three years later. Here you can learn about Johnny Sack, a German cabinet maker and the uniqueness of his craftsmanship with his thorough and careful preparation of the lumber for building the cabin, wall panels, ceiling lamps and furniture and of course the wonderful water wheel. Be careful going in! If you’re tall that is. Johnny Sack was only 4 feet 11 inches tall. While most of the house has typical ceilings, his work area in the basement reflects his small stature.

Fly with us! Mesa Falls Scenic Byway To reach Mesa Falls Scenic Byway take US 20 from West Yellowstone into Idaho approximately 34 miles. Watch for the Scenic Byway Idaho 47, where it turns left. This Scenic Byway includes the Upper and Lower Mesa Falls. You will arrive at the Upper Falls first where a boardwalk leads from the Historic Big Falls Inn, now the visitor center and gift shop, right to the brink of the Upper Mesa Falls. You will then travel another mile down to the Grandview overlook of Lower Mesa Falls. At 114 feet high for the Upper Mesa Falls and 65 feet high for the Lower Mesa falls they offer equally spectacular views in a beautiful forest setting. Both falls can be viewed in full; Lower Falls from a quarter mile distance and the Upper Falls from just a few feet away. As you leave Mesa Falls turn right and travel on toward Bear Gulch and Warm River. Though the byway is less than an hours driving time, viewing the falls, touring the interpretive center, enjoying a picnic lunch and making stops to view wildflowers can easily fill half a day. Cave Falls / Bechler Area Cave Falls & Bechler Area is the Hidden Part of Yellowstone that is actually in Idaho. The Bechler region is the “wettest part of Yellowstone. It is dubbed “Cascade Corner” because of the many water falls. Here you can easily see Cave Falls and if you’re up to it take a 3 mile round trip hike to Bechler Falls or a 3.2 mile hike to Terrace Falls. Be sure to check in at the Bechler Ranger Station to pick up a map and trailhead information. Travel back to West Yellowstone on Idaho 47 or from Ashton on US 20. This trip is best taken after July 1st because part of the route travels on a gravel road that is minimally maintained. Teton Scenic Byway Make a day to visit Grand Teton National Park in a geological “gold mine” of adventure. Take the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway trip to Ashton and on Idaho 32, along the western side of the Teton Range. The mountains sharply contrast with rolling fields of wheat and canola in these agricultural communities as this trip through the backcountry of Idaho takes you to the Teton Scenic By-way. If you have time, travel on Idaho 31 through the beautiful Pine Creek pass to Swan Valley or just continue on Idaho 33. You will then be driving the incredible Teton Pass and drop down into the Jackson Valley with Jackson Hole, Wyoming and on to Grand Teton National Park. At nearly 10 million years young, the Tetons are the newest mountains in the Rockies. In fact, they continue to grow today at a pace of about an inch every hundred years. The distance from the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park to the south boundary of Grand Teton National Park is 56 miles; approximate driving time with stops is 1-1/2 hours. There are three visitor centers for you to stop and get information. Be sure to visit the Jenny Lake area taking the one way drive and enjoy a scenic boat cruise over Jenny Lake and then a half mile hike to Hidden Falls. Take a horseback ride at Colter Bay and stop by the Visitor Center & Indian Arts Museum. Return through Yellowstone National Park. DestinationYellowstone.com

"ROUGHING IT" Camping and RVing Visitors to West Yellowstone and Yellowstone Park that want to camp have a wide choice of options from basic backcountry sites to developed national forest campsites to full amenities at private campgrounds. Jim Peaco
• Carry and know how to use bear pepper spray for emergencies. • Stay on trails or rural roads. • Make your presence known by talking, singing, carrying a bell, or other means, especially when near streams or in thick forest where visibility is low. • Camp away from trails and areas where you see grizzly signs. • Keep a clean camp at all times. Keep tents and sleeping bags free of odors. • Avoid cooking smelly foods. • Hang all food, trash and other odorous items well away from camp and at least 10' above ground and 4' from any vertical support, or store in a bear-proof container. • Don't sleep in the same clothes you wore while cooking or eating.

Public campgrounds outside of West Yellowstone are open from May 15 to September 15 with the exception of Beaver Creek Campground, which is open from June 10 to September 10. RV campgrounds can be as small as a few dozen sites to booming resorts with hundreds of sites, catering to RVs of every type and size. Some RVers prefer the simple solitude of campgrounds that provide merely the basics of electricity and fresh water at the site. Others prefer full-service options with electricity, water and sewer hookups for each RV. Electronically dependent travelers appreciate the Wi-Fi service provided at many campgrounds. No matter whether you’re a family looking for an actionpacked trip, a couple seeking relaxation and pampering or somewhere in between, there’s an RV site waiting for you.
Go Glamping Glamping, or luxury camping, is a trend that offers outdoor enthusiasts an upgrade on rest and recreation. You get to enjoy the sights and sounds of the great outdoors while relaxing in a comfortable bed. When you’re glamping, there’s no tent to pitch, no sleeping bag to unroll, no fire to build. Whether in a tent, tipi, or airstream, glamping is a way to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing luxury. Glamping often involves a rustic setting, but with all the comforts of a hotel or resort including meals and activities. During the winter season, trails are groomed regularly. Subsequent loops and optional cut-offs mean the course is never boring or predictable. You can create your own route by linking together different loops from 0.9 to 7.3 kilometer each. A children’s play hill and local telehill are also incorporated into the system.
What could be better than escaping the confines of office or home to spend a day colored by wintery landscapes and brilliant blue skies?
Trail passes are required when using the Rendezvous Ski Trails between November 1 and March 31.
The western corridor of Yellowstone Park and adjoining national forests offer some of the best cross country skiing in Yellowstone Country. The Rendezvous Ski Trails in West Yellowstone, the Riverside Trail leaving from West Yellowstone, and 40 miles of ski trails in the Old Faithful area offer great trails and scenery for skiers of all abilities. The Boundary Trail, which follows the western edge of Yellowstone, is ‘dog-friendly.’
BOUNDARY TRAIL The Boundary Ski and Snowshoe Trail offers 7.9km of trails that parallel Yellowstone Park’s western border. It is also one of the few "pet friendly" trails in Montana. This is also a "free" no fee trail, perfect for families and kids.
There are also daily snowcoach tours leaving from West Yellowstone that offer crosscountry skier drop-offs and pick-ups as part of the tour. These tours offer the best of both worlds combining an interpretive tour with skiing in the heart of Yellowstone, all in one day! For more information, go to www.DestinationYellowstone.com.
This easy trail is groomed to accommodate classic cross-country skiers and snowshoers alike. TheTrail can be accessed from Boundary Street, the truck pull-out on Highway 191/287, and Baker's Hole Campground.
The Nordic ski season around West Yellowstone can last into the late spring, depending on snow conditions. Many locals like to go North of town to ski on Hebgen Lake, nestled among the mountains, providing some of the most breathtaking views in the valley.
RIVERSIDE TRAIL Ski right into Yellowstone National Park, along the Madison River where you could catch a glimpse of bald eagles soaring, frosty bison grazing or a beautiful pair of trumpeter swans swimming by. The Riverside Ski Trail crosses very easy terrain. New skiers can try out the sport and ski to impressive views inside Yellowstone National Park. Locals send families and photographers on this trail, which glides along the Montana portion of the Madison River just inside Yellowstone’s boundary. Views include the 10,336-foot Mt. Holmes and the Gallatin Mountain Range. Bison, elk, and moose frequent the river area and sometimes use the packed trail.

Snowmobile West Yellowstone is undoubtedly a snowmobiler’s paradise. With more than 143 inches of snow annually, and 400 miles of trails through some of the most breathtaking scenery anywhere, it continues to top the list of favorite sledding destinations. The trail system begins right in town, where snowmobilers share city streets with motorists, and onto trails in the Custer-Gallatin, Beaverhead and Targhee National forests. Groomed trails provide access to off-trail powder meadows and more advanced back country riding. Local businesses provide snowmobile and clothing rentals on a daily or multi-day basis. Snowmobile rentals range from two-up easy riding and trail models to high-powered sleds adapted for mountain and back country riding. Additional equipment, including avalanche beacons and shovels for back country riding can also be rented. National Forest guide service is also available for snowmobilers new to the area, and who want to learn more about the trail system or for back country riding. Keeping those trails in pristine condition is a work of a small group of dedicated and skilled operators and mechanics. At night, while most of us are sleeping, the West Yellowstone Trail Groomers are out on the trails preparing them for the next day’s riders. The trail grooming program was the first of its kind in the U.S. It was created by a public private partnership between the West Yellowstone Chamber Trail Grooming Committee and U.S. Forest Service.
The South Plateau Trail Runs along the boundary of Yellowstone. You can ride this trail out and back, or link it up with one of the other trails to make a great loop ride. It provides great views of the area's mountains, following creeks and rivers away from the crowds. Two Top Trail The most famous trail is a popular choice for its variety of terrain and 2,000foot elevation gain. The trail is groomed, and powder fields abound. On clear days, the surrounding mountain ranges come into view, including the Teton's, Centennial Mountains, Lionhead, and Yellowstone National Park. Constant driven winds create ghostly ice patterns plastered on the trees at the top of this mountain creating the famous "snow ghosts." More experienced riders can access extra off-trail riding from the Two Top or Lionhead Trail. Lionhead follows the Continental Divide, the trail climbs through switchbacks to over 10,000 feet There are numerous bowls with drop offs and overhanging cliffs. The Big Sky Trail Provides some of the best backcountry snowmobiling in Montana. This challenging 110-mile trail begins just north of West Yellowstone. While the first portion is groomed, the trail quickly turns into an un-groomed powder experience. This area has open bowls, deep fields of snow, and outstanding hill climbing opportunities.

After a day in Yellowstone, many people like to stroll the streets of West Yellowstone, perusing the shops which carry everything from souvenirs to jewelry, Montana -made pottery, home decordĂŠcor, and the latest in outdoor gear. You can visit with one of the fishing experts and learn to tie flies at one of the fly fishing shops, or find that one-of-akind piece made by one of our local artists. Many of the establishments are locally-owned and family-run.

Leisure & Luxury in the Age of Nero
The Villas of Oplontis Near Pompeii
Marble Statue of Centaur with Boar
June 18 – December 31, 2016 Vesuvius’ catastrophic eruption destroyed the seaside villas of some of Rome’s wealthiest citizens. Come see the artifacts of leisure and luxury that are all that remain of Oplontis. Join us at MOR, one of only three U.S. museums to host this stirring exhibit of artifacts that have never left Italy before. This exhibition is organized and circulated by The University of Michigan Kelsey Museum of Archeology in cooperation with the Ministero dei Beni e delle Attivitá Culturali e del Turismo and the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Pompei, Ercolano e Stabia.
