Since 1986 Bozeman Health’s mission has been to improve community health and quality of life. It’s our pleasure to care for you, and we’re proud to be a vital part of the health and economies of Southwest Montana. In addition to providing essential services to keep our community’s workforce healthy and productive, Bozeman Health provides well-paying jobs, purchases significant quantities of supplies and services, and is fundamental to supporting the region’s quality of life. According to a 2015 economic impact study by Prospera, Southwest Montana’s economy would lose more than 3,000 jobs and nearly $150 million in personal income if Bozeman Health didn’t exist. For every $1 in revenue, it is recirculated roughly 1.72 times within our local economies before it moving out to the rest of the state. Our 2015-2016 investments in Big Sky Medical Center, Belgrade Clinic, and Medical Office Building 5 alone injected of $73.42 million to the regional economy and supported 452 jobs in Gallatin, Park, and Madison counties. As a non-profit, we reinvest in our community through facilities, technology, and services to keep up with community growth and expectations, and the evolving healthcare industry. We know that succeeding in the current environment requires careful study and planning. Our strategy focuses on care transformation across the continuum of care to continue the shift to value-based payment, consumerism as a driver to adapt to a retail-based healthcare orientation, and care integration that leverages relationships with partners to deliver the right service at the right time. Within that strategic framework, we anticipate an operating model that prioritizes care experience for patients and families, caregivers and providers; care excellence, through evidence-based care, topdecile clinical outcomes, and safety; and care performance, centered on stewardship, efficiency and innovation. Fortunately, we already have in place a key element necessary to achieve our goals: our intelligent, capable, optimistic,

and service-oriented employees. Bozeman Health has undergone massive change in the past 18 months, with the implementation of a new electronic medical record system, shift in leadership, construction of new care facilities, and growing threats from competitors. Through it all, our care team has consistently delivered high-quality, compassionate care. Healthcare is a 24/7 business and the foundation upon which successful employees, businesses, and communities flourish. Bozeman Health’s dedication to Southwest Montana goes beyond treatment of disease and episodic care. We are proud to partner with Montana State University through the WWAMI medical and nursing education programs to help to prepare a strong workforce for the future of Montana, including our rural communities. Our partnerships and collaborations with agencies and organizations outside the healthcare sector, deliberate involvement of the community in health decision-making, and use of evidence-based strategies to engage with communities, optimizes the health and quality of life of all people who work, live, and play in the communities we serve. Top 10 Reasons
Free Play ROCKS! Today, more than ever, parents are raising families who are always on the go. Days are filled with music lessons, sporting events, and after school activities that take up much of a child’s time. It is easy to overlook the advantages of free, unstructured play for our kids and the proven benefits it has on performance in other areas so we recommend this list of the top 10 reasons free play ROCKS! In other words, set aside time throughout the week for kids to play outside, go to the park, or simply be left to their own imagination without toys and adult influence. This can have major benefits socially, emotionally, and physically. Sensory Enrichment: Free play enhances sensory experiences and helps build processing skills. Interaction without structure stimulates kid’s hearing, touch, vision, and the ability to “feel” all of these systems working together. This also helps children with self-control. As they test their different sensory experiences, they begin to find activities that work best to alert or calm their bodies. Risk Taking: Unstructured, free play, gives children the opportunity to take risks. This not only allows them to find their limits, but also encourages problem solving skills, and confidence. Motor Planning Skills: The ability to come up with, organize, and carry out steps to achieve a task on their own is an area of control that a child learns with more opportunities and varied environments. Figuring out how to climb a boulder, negotiating a new playground, or crossing a stream are all opportunities for a child to develop their motor planning skills. School Performance: When children are able to burn energy outside the classroom, they are less likely to seek sensory experiences in the classroom, or are more certain of ways to control excitement levels while in school. Research has also shown that the more often children engage in free play, the higher their abilities to will be to plan, focus, remember and juggle multiple tasks. Physical Development: Free play allows for children to continually develop their coordination, balance, and flexibility. When on their own in open spaces, kids will take opportunities to run, jump, and climb, therefore building their muscles, hearts and lungs. They are also gaining core strength—back and tummy muscles—as they move around
6 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
upright instead of sitting in front of a screen. Every chance that a child has to move rather than sit stationary in front of a screen is essential for healthy growth and development. Movement causes their bodies and minds to become fatigued, in a good way, which will encourage good sleeping habits—for them and you!
CARE WHERE YOU NEED IT
Cognitive Development: The well-known games of Red Light—Green Light, Simon Says, and Follow the Leader, are all simple games with rules—the highest level of cognitive play. Taking turns in games is critical for success in all aspects of life. Leadership Skills: Free play enhances skills in decisionmaking, learning to work in groups, sharing, negotiating, and discovering what is personally enjoyable. Children learn to become more verbal and express themselves to others. Healthy Habits: More time for free play means more time for children to remain active and less sedentary. Kids will learn how to stay physical even when not provided with constant structure of gym class or a specific sport. Staying active in childhood improves the likelihood that a child will develop a more active and healthy lifestyle into adulthood. Visual Perceptual Skills: Free play means less screen time and less time focusing on a narrow field of vision. When engaged in play, the visual field expands exponentially because peripheral vision is being used constantly, providing more opportunity for the vision cells to be developed. Kids Being Kids: Outdoor environments fulfill children’s basic needs for freedom, adventure, experimentation, risk-taking, and just being children. Think of your child discovering a cocoon—where can that take their imagination? The simple wonders of nature are amazing and ever-changing! The Last Best Secret
handling, inside and outside security, the personnel employees of individual entities.” Over the years, the airport has grown from 30,000 to 430,000 passengers annually and now employs five hundred people.
Bozeman-Yellowstone International Airport by Corinne Richardson
There is a renaissance taking place in southwest Montana. It’s a wellkept secret amongst those who live and vacation here, and Gallatin Field Airport is at the heart of it. Gallatin Field, recently renamed Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), has undergone a huge transformation—one that has doubled its size, introduced a customs office, and posited it to become the busiest airport in Montana. There is much to admire about the airport: its light and spacious design abounding in historical and regional references. A combination of local materials, wood, metal and fieldstone, paired with expansive mountain views, gives a sense of Big Sky Country’s spaciousness. Canada geese and sandhill cranes suspended in the high vaulted ceiling, an impressive bronze grizzly greeting visitors as they deplane, and a live video of Old Faithful streaming into a deep blue sky all exemplify what Montana is famous for: distinctive natural beauty. Behind the expansion is a man who is passionate about airports. “I love the airline industry, but I have a passion for this airport,” says Brian Sprenger, Airport Director. “I’m a huge supporter of our community, which I define as West Yellowstone to Bozeman.” Sprenger’s love for airports is in his blood. His mother was a flight attendant and his father worked for Frontier Airlines in Denver before taking a position at Gallatin Field as station manager. When he was five, Sprenger saw the first Boeing 747 fly into Denver and he was enthralled for life. Sprenger has almost thirty years of airport experience, twenty-eight at Gallatin Field. In 1983, he got his start at Gallatin Field cleaning airliners and began working for Northwest Airlines in 1985 as a Customer Service Agent. He moved to Kalispell, 8 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
then Minneapolis where he gained station management experience and managed education programs. In 1999, Sprenger was offered the job of Assistant Airport Director at Gallatin Field. “I feel it’s a privilege to live here in Bozeman. I get both to do the work I love and be where I want to live,” he says. In the thirteen years since his return, Sprenger has lived through a lot of change. He remembers when it was unusual to have more than one airliner on the ground at Gallatin Field, when boarding was via movable steps to the aircraft, and baggage claim were nonexistent. “It was a very intimate, exciting process,” Sprenger says. Now, especially around busy holidays such as President’s day, there are as many as 70 commercial and corporate jets flying in and out of BZN per day. To put that in perspective, when including general aviation, that’s seven to eight planes an hour, or one plane every three minutes. As he speaks, an Airbus A320 fills his office window, pulls up to the gate, and I can’t help but feel the same sense of excitement heard in Sprenger’s voice. We watch the jet’s arrival and the sudden action around it—the field crew directing the plane, carts darting to and from the aircraft, the appearance and disappearance of luggage, the slow whir of the engine shutting down. I stare out, mystified by all the moving parts and turn back to Sprenger, and ask, “How do you operate an airport?” Sprenger laughs in his shy, quiet manner. “We provide the facility, the terminal from which everyone can operate— concessions, garbage
Sprenger attributes a large part of the airport’s growth to Big Sky. “What Big Sky means to Bozeman is not always evident,” he says. BZN’s current nonstop flights from Atlanta and New York became possible because of Big Sky’s marketing. The initial investment of Chrystler and Northwest Airlines in the Chet Huntley days really launched the airport, and Boyne continued marketing that investment, Sprenger notes. “Big Sky Resort, the Yellowstone Club, Moonlight Basin, and the Club at Spanish Peaks took Gallatin Field from a one-season business to two,” Sprenger says. However, Sprenger is quick to point out that Bozeman is also crucial to Big Sky. The four pillars that give BZN strength and sustainability are the Bozeman community population base, Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky, and Montana State University. The airport expansion came at a challenging economic time. “In 2008-09 we were deciding whether to do the terminal expansion project. When the bottom fell out we were down some in numbers, but we stayed the course and committed to the design process until we had to make a final decision,” Sprenger says. “It was risky to move forward, but we were seeing indications that traffic wasn’t going to drop and we thought the project would boost the local economy,” he adds. The expansion is already paying off. A video shot at 5 a.m. one recent morning shows every gate occupied by a plane. Sprenger has accomplished a lot during his tenure as Airport Director, an appointment conferred upon him in 2009. In addition to the terminal expansion and new customs office, BZN, in conjunction with the FAA , has over the past fifteen years adopted new procedures that have reduced delays by 90%, added a $1.5 million dollar radar display, a control tower, and additional private air traffic control employees. BZN has also applied to privatize the airport screening process. One significant change was a modification to the airplane approach pattern. Sprenger points at a photo pinned to his bulletin board in which six planes are backed up on the runway, a delay caused by inclement weather but exacerbated by the airport’s approach control design. It practically took an act of congress to implement the change, but Sprenger worked tirelessly with the FAA
and Montana Senators to expedite the airport’s departure process and thereby reduce delays. Because Gallatin Field has grown more quickly than the FAA predicted, the airport has had to become proactive in making improvements and has used their own resources to make upgrades. Sprenger credits his predecessor, Ted Mathis, for having left Gallatin Field in a good financial position that allowed the airport to afford these improvements. As for the new customs service at BZN, introduced in conjunction with the Yellowstone Club and Signature Flight Support in July, Sprenger says, “we’ve not even begun touching on what customs can do for us beyond servicing private jets.” For example, having a customs office at BZN allows hunters to take their weapons overseas, benefits any airline coming in to service Mexico, and offers international airlines the ability to bring in a charter flight to Yellowstone National Park. International cargo can now be cleared at BZN. “It will be interesting to see how customs service develops,” Sprenger says. “The market will determine the growth direction.” One of the highlights in Sprenger’s career in airport management happened on September 11, 2001. While airports across the country were shut down, Gallatin Field remained open. FEMA directors, convening in Big Sky for a conference, were shuttled back to work by military flights from BZN. But Sprenger admits that Airforce One landing at Gallatin Field was among his top memorable experiences, and the photograph in his office is impressive. Sprenger watched Airforce One’s descent from the control tower in a severe thunderstorm. “For me, it satisfied a lifelong dream of seeing a Boeing 747 flying into Bozeman.” As for future airport plans, Sprenger admits that it’s an ever-evolving industry, but on his wish list is expanded service, especially to Texas, and he hopes the airport can keep its competitive edge by remaining the lowest cost airport in Montana on a per-mile basis. “We’ve accomplished a lot in a few years,” Sprenger says, “and now it’s time to make sure the changes are leveraged to the fullest. We need to focus on improving the consistency of good service from the time a passenger parks to the time they board.” In the meantime, you can expect that Sprenger will be posting the next problem to tackle on his bulletin board—and then churning out solutions. Architect bayliss ward takes cues from bozeman’s history to modernize its future by Skip Anderson
A
Long before Bayless Ward became one of southwest Montana’s most influential architects and board member
on the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, he was a small-town kid in rural Indiana, racing motorcycles and, later, driving fast cars. “I was born in Lubbock, Texas, and lived in Carmel, Ind., until I was 21,” Ward said. “When I grew up there, it was a little farm town. Now it’s blossomed into the place to be.” Rather than diving into college upon graduating from high school, Ward pursued his then-passion to drive fast — a budding need for speed. “I laid out for almost four years after high school. I worked, and drag-raced. We did some street racing and went to the quarter-mile drag strips, also,” Ward said, who strongly preferred Chevys to Fords. “My favorite car was a 1966 Chevy II. It was a fast car, especially at that time. Then I had a ’68 Camaro and a ’70 Nova.” Although racing never materialized as a career option, he immersed himself into the culture, rubbing elbows with those who eventually would make careers of driving intensely fast and arrow-straight, including eventual racing legend Bob Glidden. “I was a mechanic and I drag raced,” Ward said. “I was a jack of all trades and a master of none, as they say.” That is, until he found a passion that surpassed racing. When Ward was 21, he began his pursuit of architecture. “By that time, I had settled upon going to architectural school,” Ward said. “Some of my parents’ friends were architects in

When you walk through the door of Head West at first you might think that it is a typical western store, but within only a few steps you realize it’s so much more. The inviting smell of leather and the creaks of an original wooden floor greet you. Men’s Stetson hats line the walls and a great selection of handsome shirts in wools and winter plaids tactually tantalize. As you glide past the antique cases filled with turquoise and silver artisan-crafted jewelry and unique western influenced gifts, you are now inspired! The women’s section extends throughout the rest of this well merchandised store, offering many types of cross-over and western inspired pieces. No western store would be complete without the boot wall, and Head West does not disappoint! With boot eye candy from Corral to Old Gringo, and even hand fashioned Montana made Canty Boots, their selection is not to be missed. The most original part of Head West isn’t even on the main floor. Past the register is a special stairway that takes you down into an expanse of fabulous vintage and consignment pieces that have been hand selected from all over the country. aesthetic of an area, especially ones as notably gorgeous as the Gallatin Valley, is working with the surroundings. Fighting it, Ward said, is a common mistake. And sometimes, especially when it’s a renovation of an existing structure, that means steering a building that may have been a misguided from the start toward contemporary tastes, which is generally more complex, sophisticated even, than in years past. There was a time when people built largely to suit their own personal tastes or bowing exclusively in effort to satisfy particular pragmatic needs, veering from the vision only enough to

2017 Poster Contest Winner First Place: Micha Rott Second Place: Valerie Chai – Fayetteville, NY Third Place: Olivia Rose Langan – Bozeman, MT Growing up in Nebraska, Micah Holle Rott always had a great love for art and animals—especially rabbits. There are many drawings from as young as 4 years old that have bunnies baking, etc. She either wanted to be a veterinarian or an artist and college chemistry confirmed what she already knew in her heart. While her family resided in Lincoln, Nebraska, her father had a dream of a place he referred to as “God’s Country”—Montana. They made many vacation trips to Bozeman, where her parents picked out property for “some day.” After she graduated from college and set out to conquer the world in graphic design Micah focused her sites on Bozeman but fell in love and married Jeremy Rott, a Kansas man, and settled there, while her parents, Larry and Rachel Holle, moved to Bozeman permanently. Today, Micah works as a freelance graphic designer and has three children, Silas-15 and twins Corinne and Jonas-12. She still loves animals and illustrating and dreams of one day setting aside time for a children’s book. They visit her parents in Bozeman often to be where her son Silas has referred to as “the most perfect place.”

Adventure for Every Season
West Yellowstone, Montana courtesy of the west yellowstone chamber of commerce
The town of West Yellowstone, sitting at an elevation of 6,666 feet, just outside of the West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park is a year-round destination. Nestled among majestic mountain peaks, and surrounded by natural scenic wonders, the town is rich in history and activities.
CAROLYN FOX
SPRING Spring is a time of change and renewal in West Yellowstone. From mid-March to mid-April, the west entrance to Yellowstone opens to people-powered vehicles only. These “cycle-only” days allow bikers to see the first splashes of color as green sedges and bright yellow monkey-flowers emerge amidst dwindling snow banks. Bison trudge along the roads and elk feed along the rivers. May brings bison calves and bison jams on the roadways. Bison begin calving in mid-April and by May you can start to see hundreds of bright reddish-brown calves among the bison herds. The bison gather in traditional “nursery” areas such as Fountain Flats just north of Old Faithful or in areas along rivers such as Lamar and Hayden Valleys. Spring is the best time for bear sightings as grizzly and black bears make their way down from higher elevations to the meadows and rivers. Where else but Yellowstone can you have a ring-side seat to witness the sheer strength of a bear tearing apart a rotten tree stump or carcass? And, 38 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
then just a few miles later, watch as a sow gently noses her wayward cubs across a busy road with everyone stopped for the first “bear jam” of the season?
SUMMER When it comes to summertime activities the West Yellowstone area is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. The long summer days provide visitors unlimited access to explore and play in the splendor of the high country. You can fish blue ribbon trout streams, hike in pristine wilderness, experience real western horseback riding, go whitewater rafting or mountain bike on hundreds of miles of single track and forest service roads. In addition to regal Yellowstone National Park right next door with its famous geysers, wildlife and waterfalls, there’s adventure to be found just to the West. Hebgen Lake, with its miles and miles of shoreline offers camping, boating, canoeing and the best still water fishing in Montana. Or, take an afternoon and learn to kayak on this clear mountain lake surrounded by beautiful mountains. Just beyond is Earthquake Lake, formed the night in 1959 that a 7.5 quake rocked the Madison Valley and a mountain fell. With summer comes a choice of activities; weekly Wild
West Yellowstone Rodeo, the Yellowstone Historic Museum Center, daily Yellowstone Ranger talks, and other programs just for kids like the Junior Smokejumper’s Program. Don’t miss a genuine small town 4th of July, where anyone can be in the parade, listen to live music, enjoy barbecues at the City Park, and end the day with an incredible fireworks display set against a backdrop of mountains. For the authentic Western experiences try a horseback trail ride at sunset through the mountains, or sit back and take a horse-drawn carriage ride to a tasty cook-out. Either way, the experience and the views will take your breath away.
FALL Fall brings spectacular scenery and the annual elk mating season where huge bull elk battle for their harems with eerie echoing bugles across wide valleys. Cooler fall temperatures create spectacular photo opportunities at Old Faithful and other geysers in Yellowstone Park. It’s the best time of the year for mountain biking, road cycling, hiking, and photography in Yellowstone and the surrounding National Forests. Spawning runs of big brown and battling rainbow trout migrate from Hebgen Lake up the Madison, Gallatin, and Firehole Rivers. This makes West Yellowstone the prime fishing destination each fall, earning the title as one of the “Top 10 Trout Towns in America” by Forbes Magazine. Even a rainy fall day is fun with a visit to the Grizzly
YELLOWSTONE PHOTO STUDIO
& Wolf Discovery Center. Meet the two wolf packs or different resident grizzly bears, observe the raptors, talk to a naturalist, and check out the “Keeper Kids Program.” Next door the movie, “Yellowstone,” plays daily at the Yellowstone Giant Screen Theater with a six story movie screen. Late fall features the annual West Yellowstone Old Faithful Cycle Tour. This roundtrip cycle ride circles through Yellowstone National Park from West Yellowstone to Old Faithful and back. With feed stations along the way and a snag wagon to grab a lift if you get tired, it is the perfect family cycling event. Or, join the Yellowstone Rendezvous Trail Race – a half-marathon that takes place entirely on groomed forest service trails.
WINTER With an average of 153” of snow every year and 184 days of sun, West Yellowstone has earned its place on the list of “11 Coolest Winter Places in America” (Budget Travel) and one of the “Top Ten Winter Towns” by National Geographic Traveler. It is continuously voted one of the top snowmobile destinations. Outside the park there are millions of acres of public lands for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers to explore. Explore over 400 hundred miles of groomed snowmobile trails by West Yellowstone and the State of Idaho in the surrounding National Forests. Over 50km of groomed Nordic ski trails start from town. The Rendezvous Ski Trail system offers a groomed 35KM trail, usually groomed daily and available from November through April. The Boundary Ski Trail (pet-friendly) and Yellowstone Park’s Riverside Trail also start from West Yellowstone. GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017 39

NORDIC SKI With over 50km of groomed ski trails and hundred more throughout the National Forests, West Yellowstone is a Nordic skier’s playground. Many Nordic events are hosted throughout the season as well including biathlons, Yellowstone Ski Festival each Thanksgiving and Rendezvous Race the first weekend of March. ICE FISHING Ice fishing is more than just a way to fill the days between the closing of one open water fishing season and the opening of the next. It is a chance to breathe the cold, clean winter air; to spend quiet time outdoors with family and friends, and to relax and collect one’s thoughts. And if competing is your thing, West Yellowstone hosts a national Ice Fishing Tournament on Hebgen Lake, just north of town in January. The weekend is filled with seminars, a kid’s workshop and the fishing competition itself. (westyellowstoneicefishing.com)

West Yellowstone tour companies offer over the snow daylong tours into Yellowstone via snowmobile or snowcoach. Tours begin on December 15th and end on March 15th each winter, weather dependent. Snowmobile tours include all the equipment and clothing that you will need for a day in the park.
SLED DOGS There’s something about experiencing West Yellowstone’s winter landscapes from the perspective of a dog sled that cannot be matched. Local teams are waiting to share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with you. You can also join us throughout the winter for several exciting races, where mushers and their teams travel over the trails surrounding West Yellowstone, racing against the clock to see whose team comes out on top. (wysleddograces.com)

If you’re fortunate enough to experience Yellowstone in the winter, you’re in for a rare treat. The snow covered landscape, frozen waterfalls and frosted trees when, contrasted with geysers and other geothermal features, create a surreal winterscape. If you’re lucky enough to venture into the backcountry, you will encounter a quiet calm that for some is a transcendental experience.

Form & Function Gallatin Plastic Surgery Those who live in Bozeman (or much of the Mountain West for that matter) are no strangers to the difficulty of finding a doctor who fits their personal needs and standards. While the services offered in Bozeman have greatly expanded in scope over recent years, those seeking a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon have often had settle for a practice which is not the best fit for their needs, or sacrifice their time along with the potential for follow-ups by traveling to their preferred doctor. When searching for a plastic surgeon, it’s important to find the doctor who meets your criteria. Experience with a given procedure, accessibility, and boardcertification should never be compromised in exchange for proximity. Knowing the importance of having the option to see a qualified surgeon, and recognizing the need present in the Gallatin Valley, in June of 2016 Dr. Jarred McDaniel moved his practice from Billings to Bozeman, opening Gallatin Plastic Surgery. Since its inception, Gallatin Plastic Surgery has catered to the needs of Bozemanites seeking the skills of a plastic surgeon, both for reconstructive procedures such as mitigating the appearance of past injuries, and for ascetic procedures, enhancing patients’ natural beauty. While many believe that certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is mandatory, the reality exist
42 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
that a plethora of surgeons offering cosmetic services are not board-certified by ABPS, nor are they legally required to be. When choosing a practice, it is pivotal to ensure that your procedure will be carried out by a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Jarred McDaniel; this ensures that they have undergone one of the most rigorous board certification processes in existence. Every plastic surgeon who is certified has completed 6-8 years of surgical training after finishing medical school, 1-2 years of ethical practice after that training, and a challenging written and oral exam. The rigor of ABPS board-certification can be partly attributed to the wide array of procedures present in plastic surgery. Dr. Jarred McDaniel regularly performs a wide variety of procedures; from those most indemand such as face lifts, body contouring, and breast augmentation, to more specialized ones which suit a range of scenarios. Coffee is not just Coffee How to Better Enjoy Your Next Cup By Tom Gibson, Owner of Cafe M
As you sign your electronic signature on the LED screen on the hip/cool/all-too-white cash register at the local coffee shop, you can’t help but look the barista in the eye and silently ask, “But is this really going to taste good?” Catching your eye and understanding all of your thoughts and trepidation, the barista looks back and calmly, confidently and almost imperceptibly nods, “Yes. Yes, it will.” It’s a moment that happens tens of thousands of times each day across the country. The trust we place in the

barista across the counter is a moment of faith, longing, and vulnerability. We really want a good cup of coffee. We really “need” a good cup of coffee. And we really wish we’d happen upon a great cup. If you’re hanging at your oft-frequented local shop, you likely have a good gauge on their coffee. You’ve been served enough cups to know if and when they’re good and what they’re really good at. When you’re traveling, it’s a different story completely. You’re at the mercy of the town you’re in and its limited choices. You can use Google, Yelp, Trip Advisor, and any number of apps that will shed some light
4. Look for Single Origin Coffees -- “Single origin” in the coffee world refers to coffee that comes from the same farm, washing station, or local collective of farms. Coffee is like wine -- where it is grown largely determines its
1. Go Small or Go Home -- Don’t go to any chain that has more than several shops in the state/country/world. Seriously. Coffee takes a whole bunch of attention to detail -- from careful sourcing and delicate roasting to finicky preparation by an experienced and invested barista. Every lot of coffee is different and reacts differently to roasting and brewing. Even coffee from the same farm, perhaps aged slightly longer by happenstance, will brew up differently and most often inconsistently. Individual shops with professional baristas who’ve been trained by knowledgeable owners/ managers are indispensable. The reality of larger coffee chains is that they are necessarily rigid in their approach to many of the most important factors that lead to great coffee. Many chains rely heavily on blends off coffees to ensure a consistent Andreas Just, freeimages.com (and consistently mediocre) flavor profile. Moreover, the bigger the business, the greater the shareholders. The more focus on profits, the quality and latent flavor characteristics. For decades, the coffee industry sloppily mixed coffees from neighboring less money goes to great green (un-roasted) coffee beans. Smaller, independently owned shops can be hit and miss farms, regions, and countries. Spy some Latte Art -- Latte art is the finishing touch of a crafted espresso and milk drink (aka the “latte”). 5. Note the Brew Times -- Most shops do “batch brews” Good latte art takes practice and a lot of it. If you see -- a brew of coffee that is large enough to handle multiple, baristas throwing down beautiful latte art on their drinks, if not many, cups of coffee. Increased amounts of coffee grinds used, stable water temperatures via larger volumes of water, and highly

specific and accurately repeated brew parameters (via an expensive batch brewer) can produce high quality coffee again and again. Ahh, but there’s always a down side. Batch brewers allow shops and baristas to be lazy. Baristas can brew it and forget it. And four hour later ... well, you don’t want that cup of coffee. Look for brew times on the coffee airpots or ask the barista when she brewed that last batch. If she doesn’t know, that’s not good. Coffee is best right after it’s brewed and degrades progressively as it sits. 6. Quiz the Barista -- A good barista can talk the talk. Ask the barista about coffee sourcing or roast level or ... just make it up! Honestly, you can quickly ascertain if the barista actually knows much about his product. Sometimes a newer barista can be still learning the ropes and not have a good answer. That’s fine. If you find a whole staff worth of “Uh, I don’t knows,” well then … you are now in the know. And you should say “no” and maybe “thanks.” 7. Cream and Sugar -- Otherwise known as the enemies of good coffee, cream and sugar have been hiding bad coffee for longer than you’ve been alive. Honestly. Folger’s, Maxwell House, and many other household
brands have been drowned in cream and sugar for decades. And for good reason. However, a truly good cup of coffee doesn’t need additional sweetening or cream to cut through the bitter aftertaste. Coffee can and should taste great. And before you say, “Well, not to my palate.” Give yourself and your palate a chance. If you can find a good, reliable source for high quality coffee, drink it black. Let it cool a bit. Take a sip. And try it again. And then come back the next day and try it again. You’ll be amazed how quickly your palate will develop and begin to taste the sweetness inherent in really good coffee and the subtleties that can only be appreciated if they’re left unencumbered by the blunt effects of sugar and cream. 8. Experiment -- Really good coffee is great hot. It’s great iced. It’s great pulled as espresso and served with milk. It’s lovely as nitro coffee (infused with nitrogen like Guinness). Good habits make life simply livable, but we all fall into drinking and eating habits that get boring. If you normally drink drip coffee, order an Americano. If you’re a latte lover, try a pour over or straight black coffee. The more you challenge your assumptions and palate, the more rewarding you’ll find your (likely near) daily habit. Enjoy your coffee. Really enjoy your coffee.

Modern vein treatments utilize minimally invasive techniques to close or remove poorly functioning veins. These procedures are safely done in the office using local anesthesia and generally take less than 60 minutes. Discomfort afterwards is minimal and most people resume normal activities the day of treatment. Larger surgeries which were common years ago, such as vein stripping, have become obsolete with today’s modern vein treatments. Whether one decides to have a varicose vein evaluation or procedure there are ways to help maintain healthy legs. Regular use of compression stockings and exercise are the most important. Although varicose veins are not a condition that can be technically ‘cured’ those who can follow through with these measures and treatment, if needed, give themselves an advantage to avoid future varicose veins problems.
Montana Vein Clinic was founded in 2007 and was the first clinic in the area dedicated to the treatment of varicose veins. Dr. Andrew Grace founded the clinic, continues to oversee its operations, and performs all the treatments. He is the only varicose vein expert in the area who is certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a diplomat of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Phlebology, the American Medical Association recognized group of physician specialists who are focused on the treatment of varicose veins and venous insufficiency. Montana Vein Clinic is focused on serving the Gallatin Valley and surrounding counties but frequently welcomes patients from all over Montana. Varicose Veins
Modern Treatment for a Common Problem Varicose veins are a common medical condition and are estimated to occur in up to 25 percent of women and 15 percent of men. They are associated with age and are present in approximately half of people over age 50. Most frequently seen in the legs and feet, they can appear at the skin surface as small networks of blue or red veins (often called spider veins) or larger veins that bulge under the skin. Inefficient blood flow is the underlying cause for varicose veins. Healthy veins have one-way valves that encourage good blood flow out of the leg by preventing blood from being pulled backward under the effect of gravity. If the valves don’t work well blood leaks backward, pressure increases in the veins, and veins can swell and become varicose. The process can be painless but frequently causes symptoms of discomfort such as throbbing, acing, itching, burning or leg swelling. Symptoms are usually worse at the end of the day. 48 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
Anyone can get varicose veins but the strongest risk factor is genetics. If one or both parents have varicose veins it is probable their children will develop them, too. Pregnancy is another strong risk factor and lesser risk factors include advancing age, jobs or hobbies that require prolonged standing, and being overweight. Untreated varicose veins slowly get worse over time. The discomfort related to them will persist or worsen and can interfere with activities of daily living. They become larger, more numerous and increasingly uncomfortable. Some people develop more advanced problems such as superficial blood clots, skin changes or, in severe cases, skin ulcers. Treatment of varicose veins is beneficial for a number of reasons but the most common reasons people seek treatment of their varicose veins is for relief of symptoms. Other common reasons are to improve leg appearance, and to keep their legs healthy in the future.
We believe in healthy legs... for life. Do you experience aching, heaviness, swelling, throbbing, or itching in your legs? You may have Varicose Veins. Call for an appointment.

Dee-O-Gee Small-town Small Businesses lead to Healthier Pets While most major companies are headquartered in urban hubs, here at Dee-O-Gee we appreciate the benefits that come with doing business in Small Town America. We’re not alone in this mindset. Nearly 63% of small business owners say smaller cities are better for small business, says Rocket Lawyer’s 2014 Semi-Annual Small Business Index. We also believe that pets are healthier and happier when pet owners choose to spend their pet care dollars with locally owned small businesses. The reasons behind why small towns are such boons for small business are diverse. First-class networking, minimal regulations, and high-quality talent pools are just a few of the factors which obviously stand out. In addition, a thriving local entrepreneurial culture is a major plus. Similar to small towns, urban neighborhoods can also harbor some of these benefits, making them ideal locations for small business as well. At Dee-O-Gee base camp in Bozeman, Montana we’ve found these benefits go a few steps past just marking your own turf though. Operating a business in a small town also offers small business owners an opportunity to get to know customers and other local businesses better, a chance to give back to the community in a bigger way, and internally fosters a business culture of growth and opportunity that empowers employees.
Small businesses are community hubs. Since launching in 2008, Dee-O-Gee’s headquarters in Bozeman have grown into a beloved local hub for our city’s pet loving community. We’ve done this by always putting our customers first. Whether it’s offering puppy training classes or organizing events with special perks for customers by partnering with other local small businesses, we’ve always remained committed community and creating fun, unique, and enjoyable experiences for our loyal customers and their fourlegged companions. And in our case, the proof is in the kibble - earlier this year we received “Best of Bozeman” awards for Best Place for Pet Supplies and Best Pet Groomer for yet another year, titles we are humbled to accept.
Small businesses have a greater impact on their community.
Another benefit we’ve discovered at Dee-O-Gee is small businesses can be powerful tools for community building and strengthening. Through collaboration with non-profits and other local benefit groups, small business offers business owners a way to have a larger impact on their surrounding community, than they would individually. Our Bozeman Dee50 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
O-Gee stores regularly work with local organizations to rally around community-focused causes. Events like Paw-casso, Name the Dog Park Poll, In-Store Adoption Days and the annual Dogs of Bozeman Calendar are great examples of how we’ve worked with local non-profits to support efforts to create more off-leash dog areas across town and find much-needed homes for deserving pets throughout our community.
Small businesses, when well-run and managed, create a culture unique to themselves. Another thing we’ve learned over time at Dee-O-Gee is our employees, as well as our customers, have become an
extension of our family. We’ve been fortunate to hire some very talented staff members over the years. This has given us the opportunity to develop, mentor, and watch them grow personally and professionally. Most recently, one of our longest running employees left to pursue her dream of running her own photography business. The business culture of collaboration, community, and room to grow we strive to cultivate at Dee-O-Gee helped her get to that point and it’s a moment we’re proud to belong.
Ancestrally, our animal companions are hunters and carnivores. The dog at your feet (or, on your sofa) has evolved from the wolf, and his digestive system is virtually the same despite thousands of years of domestication. Dogs have very short intestinal tracts geared to the consumption and digestion of raw foods. The cat on your lap is a true or “obligate” carnivore (meat only diet) and is specially designed by nature to hunt small rodents and birds. Her digestive tract, as well, is intended to assimilate raw food.
In the end, we believe the benefits of small business far surpass beyond just making money or being your own boss. It’s about making a difference, supporting each other, and having fun along the way.
Unfortunately, commercially prepared kibble has become the standard diet for most pets in our culture, often found at big box stores and warehouse membership stores. Conscious pet owners (and, many proactive knowledgeable veterinarians) are becoming increasingly aware of the true nutritional needs of companion animals. Resultantly, they are placing more importance on getting the highest quality ingredients and carefully controlled preparation than on cost and convenience. When determining the best diet for your furry companions please remember “the fresher, the better”.
Really, how “fresh” is your pet’s food? Maybe the most important thing about small businesses in the pet industry - they are often the best source for nutrition options that will help your furry kid THRIVE! Nutrition is the foundation of good health for our animal companions. The best diet for your dog or cat is not unlike the best diet for you – it consists of a variety of whole foods enhanced with vitamins and minerals, enzymes and supplements (when necessary) to promote optimal health and prevent disease.
Fresh food is full of life, literally. It contains natural enzymes, probiotics, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in their most natural state, making them more digestible and more easily assimilated. Heat is the number one enemy of nutrients in food. The fresher the food, the
GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017 51
more “bioavailable” the nutrients in that food will be. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables are more likely to be intact and digestible in raw food than in dry kibble or canned food, which are processed at high temperatures. This is also true for natural enzymes, probiotics, amino acids and vitamins and minerals in your pet’s food. The less heat-processed the food is, the more likely that the nutrients will be preserved in their natural state by the time you feed it to your pet … and, the more digestible those nutrients will be. So even if dry kibble is a part of your pet’s diet, adding fresher foods like fresh or frozen raw food & bones, freeze-dried, or dehydrated foods can enhance the quality of his or her overall diet. We’ve heard it said, “Your pet’s nutrition can be one of two things, either the best long-term proactive preventative medicine OR the worst slow-acting poison that your pet will
52 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
encounter.” That’s an interesting thought to consider as we think about how to take the best care of the pets in our lives and where we spend our money (i.e. Small Business is better) to care for those furry kids we all love so much! If these sound like things you can get behind, consider checking out our franchise opportunities available. Our pack welcomes other community-minded, pet-loving entrepreneurs that want to start their own business in the independent pet industry. ---Josh & Holly Allen are the owners of Dee-O-Gee in Bozeman, MT. At Dee-O-Gee, they have been helping Montana locals take the utmost care of their pets since 2008. Starting in 2016, Dee-O-Gee and it’s systems and model are available nationally via franchise (www.dee-o-gee.com/franchise).

TUBA with Saline Implants
Trans-umbilical breast augmentation or TUBA, allows saline implants to be placed through the navel with precision using an endoscope. The procedure is done entirely subcutaneously (or just under the skin), so it does not involve the abdominal organs or muscles. Dr. Hetherington has completed specialized training in this technique to be the only physician in Montana who performs this minimally-invasive procedure. Most women appreciate that the TUBA surgery is less invasive than typical breast augmentation so there’s less breast trauma and risk of injury to breast tissue. This means faster recovery time and minimal scarring—something our patients truly appreciate.
TRANSAXILLARY with Gel Implants
Another option is transaxillary breast augmentation with gel implants. It too allows for minimal scarring since the incision site is hidden within the armpit,
resulting in natural looking breasts. Many patients prefer the armpit incision because it avoids scars on the breast and avoids cutting through the breast tissue when placing the breast implants underneath the muscle. The incision is small and well hidden in the depth of the armpit. Once the armpit incision heals, it is barely noticeable. With the transaxillary endoscopic breast approach, the breast implants can be placed below or above the chest (also known as the pectoralis) muscle with great precision.
Consultation
During your consultation, we’ll discuss your desired outcome for breast enhancement, or other cosmetic surgery you may be considering. Should you wish, you’ll have the opportunity to feel the different types and size of implants, and determine which filler, shape, size, and placement are best for your body type and breast size. Living transformed means living life your way.

Living History at the
museum of the rockies
Long before interstate highways connected Montana’s major cities, two-track roads and trails led travellers from one homestead to the next. The Living History Farm at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman tells the story of Montana’s homesteader past through the experiences and historic home of the Tinsley family of Willow Creek, Montana. Signed by Abraham Lincoln, the 1862 Homestead Act made federal lands available to US citizens who demonstrated their ability to settle and farm on parcels of 160 acres. Between 1862 and 1934, the US government approved 1.6 million homesteads and distributed 270,000,000 acres of land, 10% of all of the land in the United States. When the Tinsley House was built in 1889, Willow Creek was a cluster of small farms and ranches located near the Montana principal meridian, the geographical line that serves as the baseline for all property surveyed within the state. Railroads eventually connected the towns of Bozeman, Butte, Helena, Missoula and Billings. Still, small towns like Willow Creek were convenient stopping places for stagecoaches, 56 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
freight haulers and livestock drivers. The hospitality in these small towns varied greatly as did the quality of food and lodging places.

The Importance of Pediatric Care:
Keeping Your Child Healthy Through the Years By Dr. Courtney Handlin, Billings Clinic Acorn Pediatrics, Bozeman, MT
Establishing a relationship with a pediatrician to care for your newborn is an important first step. Most pediatric offices offer visits for expecting parents to meet a pediatrician and ask questions about the practice. The goal of newborn care is to monitor for diseases, assist with feeding, and follow growth. It is vital to ensure newborns are receiving sufficient nutritional support with professionals experienced in newborn feeding. Toddlers to school age children need close monitoring of their growth and development. It is important for them to have regular checks to be sure they are learning appropriate skills for their age and adjusting well to the school environment. Pediatricians also screen for common illnesses that may be challenging to recognize in this age group. This can
58 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
include everything from developmental delay to undiagnosed heart disease. In the older age group, including teenagers, pediatricians can help with asthma, ADHD, anxiety, depression, growth problems, vitamin D deficiency, acne and injuries. We can also offer preparatory visits for college or post-high school transition. Typically, this includes updating required vaccinations, sports physical clearance, and following up on any chronic medical issues they may have. It’s also an important time to identify any illnesses that need monitoring through the major transition into adulthood. Pediatricians can assist with transitioning medical care to an adult medical provider. The art of caring for children involves knowing a child over time, understanding their family environment, and learning what each unique child needs to thrive. Pediatricians strive to prevent illness and identify any issues early. The best way to do this is with yearly visits.
Stock photo
Did you know that pediatricians care for children of all ages and teenagers up to the age of 18? It is true. We can offer more for the health of your child beyond vaccinations. In fact, it is important for the health, development, and well-being of your child to have annual visits with a pediatrician. There are many physical and emotional challenges that children face daily. They can struggle because of undiagnosed illness, social situations, or exposures that can have a major impact on their overall well-being.

Karst continued to run the mine while running Karst Stage and the ranch up until the 1930s. The technological and industrial advancements of the 1920s and 1930s allowed Karst’s Cold Spring Ranch to flourish. In 1922, facilities in the Gallatin Canyon had access to electricity for the first time due to the construction of a hydroelectric dam at Moose Creek; this allowed Karst’s Ranch to progressively grow; guest cabins were added to ranch, eventually totaling fifty-six on the side of the highway adjacent to the river, and at least nine cabins (possibly ten) including the larger Karst cabin in an area on the other side of the river which was referred to as Dreamland. At this time, the ranch featured a wide array of facilities to entertain guest; visitors to the ranch could enjoy top-notch food in a massive dining room or coffee in a shop at the ranch. Guest at Karst’s Ranch could escape the constraints of Prohibition in the summer or winter bar which served beverages distilled on site. Guests could dance at the ranch in a dance hall which featured an astonishing view, or swim in a heated swimming pool during the summer and ice skate in a rink during the winter. Those wanting to learn about the west could visit the ranch’s museum which held an array of pieces such as native American artifacts, minerals, bird’s nests, and antlers, along with curiosities such as human skulls with gold teeth and even a taxidermy piece of a two-headed calf. Even passerbys could enjoy amenities at the ranch such as a gas pump and a general store.
KARST STAGE The thirty years preceding the turn of the century to the 1900s had seen a plethora of developments in Montana’s industry, and a vast shift in the state’s identity. With the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, the inception of Butte copper mining in 1877, the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883, and the state’s first hydroelectric dam in 1890, rapid development put Montana on the map, attracting an influx of people with the desire to see the state’s natural wonders and seek new economic opportunities. Born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1875, Peter F. Karst came to the Gallatin Valley at the age of twenty-three in the hope of making a profit in the American West. In his first year in the Gallatin Valley, Karst settled in a homestead given to him by Walter Cooper, the owner of the Cooper Tie Camp, a logging camp south of Big Sky in Taylor Fork. Karst found work as a mail carrier, traveling with mail between Bozeman and Salesville, a small pioneer town which would later become Gallatin Gateway. While working as a mail carrier, Karst recognized the need for carrier services to other areas and 60 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
decided to use the homestead which he had acquired as a down payment on a loan to buy the necessary equipment needed to begin transporting freight, mail, and loggers from Bozeman to the Cooper Tie Camp. In 1901 Karst Stage was born, making use of horse-drawn wagons and sleighs, along with dogsleds to go through the canyon on a rugged trail. Powered by horse or dog, the trip from Bozeman to Taylor fork was no easy journey; seeing the need for a point of repose along the way, Karst built a bunkhouse along the route at a halfway point near the Moose Creek. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Karst never overlooked an opportunity arising from new circumstances. By this time, Easterners were beginning to come to the western states for tourism leading Karst to explore ways he could tap this new market. Karst decided that he could use the location of his bunkhouse, an area formerly used only for timbering, ranching and prospecting, as a place to entertain tourist with a Montana experience while they enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Gallatin Canyon. Karst made the existing bunkhouse the
first building of what became the Karst’s Cold Spring Ranch. As one of the first dude ranches in the west, Karst’s Cold Spring Ranch grew rapidly and by 1909 tourist at the ranch were entertained with cookouts at Ousel Falls, fish fries up the Porcupine drainage, excursions to Yellowstone National Park, and trail rides to Lava Lake and Windy Pass. At the ranch, guests could engage in a plethora of activities such as horseback riding, fishing, hiking, collecting wildflowers and rocks, and panning for gold. In 1910, the Milwaukee railroad had connected to present day Gallatin Gateway, making the area even more accessible to tourist and leading to the ranch hosting six-hundred people that year. With an expansion in the use of automobiles in 1911, a paved road running through the Gallatin Canyon was extended to West Yellowstone from Taylor Fork. Seizing the capabilities of the new road, in 1912 a Model T Ford and two Cadillacs were added to the Karst Stage fleet to carry passengers faster and in greater comfort. Despite the time and stress associated with running the carrier service and dude ranch, Karst never missed opportunities to start new enterprises and expand his businesses. Just as Karst was starting the carrier business in 1901, he discovered asbestos about half of a mile north of the spot where the ranch would be; within four years, he had begun mining the asbestos and transporting it to Bozeman for use in commercial products.
While many people know that since 1973, Big Sky Resort has drawn thousands of visitors up the Gallatin Canyon, some may not know that people were still coming up the canyon for skiing prior to Big Sky. Using a 2,500 foot cable from his asbestos mine, Karst constructed a rope tow near the ranch on what would become Karst Hill, a small ski hill which held both downhill and slalom races. Karst later met the needs of ski jumpers by constructing a ninety-foot main ski jump along with a practice jump. The jumps a Karst Hill turned out to be so fitting that in 1938, the Bozeman Ski Club put on the Montana Ski Jumping Championships at Karst Hill. In the following two years, Karst Hill hosted the Northern Rockies Mountain Ski Association Jumping Tournament. While World War Two caused a decline in spending and travel by the American public, the inventive nature and persistence of Karst and his wife Nellie, who would remark “American boys are not closed for the duration – neither is Karst’s Ranch,” kept the doors to the ranch open. In the winter of 1943, the ranch would host parties for Air Corps cadets every weekend; despite the struggles faced by the ranch, it still managed to serve free chicken dinners to all men in uniform. Although Peter and Nellie Karst kept the ranch alive through the war, Karst’s Ranch did not last into the 1950s. In 1953, two years after selling the West Yellowstone stage line mail route, Karst sold the ranch and Karst Stage before retiring to GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017 61
the apartment in Bozeman where he lived until 1966, when he died at the age of ninety. While Karst’s Ranch was eventually destroyed by a fire in 1957, rebuilt, and destroyed by a fire again in 1987, his entrepreneurial spirit lives on in Karst Stage to this day. Just as Pete Karst always kept himself open to a wide variety of business ventures, Karst Stage currently operates motorcoach services for almost every scenario. Under the new ownership of Dan Martin, who has co-owned Karst Stage since 2012, and worked in the travel industry since 1989, Karst Stage primarily operates motor coach charters and airport shuttle services from Bozeman-Yellowstone International Airport. The motorcoach operation features twenty-one busses over forty feet in length, which are available to be chartered for any use, from tours and ski outings to school trips. Just as loggers, and later tourists boarded Karst Stage run carriages and sleighs to head up the Gallatin Canyon in the early 1900s, today passengers climb aboard Karst Stage vans to travel through the canyon from the airport to Big Sky. Every year, the shuttle service carries 8,000 passengers to Big Sky, along with West Yellowstone and Gardiner. While the motorcoach charter and airport shuttle are the largest of Karst Stage’s operations, the company is sure to continue in Peter Karst’s spirit of providing a service wherever there 62 GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017
is need. When it became apparent that there was a strong demand in Bozeman for higher-end local luxury transportation, Karst Stage responded by adding luxury mini-coaches and SUVs to their fleet. As the area’s largest ground transportation service, Karst Stage strives to provide valuable services to the community. Currently, the busses for the West Yellowstone and Anaconda school systems, along with the busses for Bozeman HRDC’s fare-free Streamline bus service are operated by Karst Stage. In addition to belonging to the Bozeman and Big Sky chamber of commerce, Karst Stage is nationally recognized through its membership with the International Motorcoach Group. As one of only fifty-five charter bus companies which are IMG members, those who charter busses from Karst Stage can be assured that the company has undergone IMG’s strict vetting process to ensure they are a safe and reliable company that maintains the highest Department of Transportation rating. Ever since Peter Karst first began transporting freight, mail, and loggers from Bozeman to the Cooper Tie Camp, Karst Stage has continually improved with advancements in transportation technology, and expanded to fulfill demand. With the possibility of expanding the Billings charter service in the future, the sky is the limit for Montana’s premier motorcoach service. GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017 63

Ultimately, it was the railroad that changed the face of the Gallatin Canyon forever, as Northern Pacific’s hunger for railroad tie timber spawned a widened path along the Gallatin River. Once the railroad rumbled through Bozeman, its thirst for passengers launched a campaign to transport visitors to the newly established Yellowstone National Park. The upgraded river road served to move logs north and tourists south. As early as 1906, ranchers along the Gallatin supplemented their finances by enticing Yellowstone visitors to extend their vacation at a “dude ranch.” Tom Michener, who ranched near the current Conoco gas station, and Sam Wilson, owner of the Buffalo Horn Ranch (now the 320 Guest Ranch), collaborated to regulate rates.
After a rigorous trip to the base of the mountains from the Big Sky Meadow (then called “Basin”), Lilian Crail and other locals hike the scree-topped peaks. But the views were worth it—as they are today. Eugene Crail and his wife Alice pose perilously close to a smoldering geyser in Yellowstone National Park. The park has since constructed more than 35 miles of boardwalks to preserve thermal features and protect tourists.
For $12 a week—plus $6 a week for a horse—vacationers could escape urban stress by renting a cabin and perhaps donning chaps and tackling ranch chores. Many of the area’s current resorts opened their doors to tourists in the early 1900s. The Dew Drop Inn became the Half Way Inn in 1919 and is now Rainbow Ranch. Lone Mountain Ranch, previously known as the B Bar K, started as a retreat in 1926. The area’s natural resources and unique geological features lured residents and visitors alike into streams and onto trails, and they still do. The overnight pack trip into the wilderness, often the highlight of a “dude’s” vacation, remains popular today. Whether fishing the pristine Gallatin River or hiking and riding in the remote forests, tourists could return to their families and colleagues with stories about their vacation in Montana.

The Historic Crail Ranch Photo Archives provide a glimpse of tourism over a century ago. Today, through a 100-year lens, we find that Big Sky’s attractiveness remains much the same, and we continue to rediscover satisfaction in combining physical exertion with an invigorating environment.
Trick riding was popular in the early 1900s, introduced by Russian Cossack immigrants. Here several friends show off their balance outside the gates of the B Bar K, which is now called Lone Mountain Ranch. GALLATIN VALLEY LIFE 2017 65

By 1916, more than 35,000 visitors entered the park annually, compared to 4 million-plus in 2016. For the first 40 years after Yellowstone was designated the nation’s first national park, most visitors arrived via train and then stagecoach. In 1916, more than 1,000 automobiles traveled into the park, which lacked paved roads.
