Lauren and Cody in Hawaii

It is a beautiful thing when a locally owned and operated business can transition from one generation to the next, and that is exactly what is happening with The Base Camp, located in Helena and Billings.

Original store owners, Scott and Deb Brown, are passing the torch to their daughters, Cody and Lauren Brown, who have grown up with the business. Let’s back up with a bit of history… The first Base Camp store found its modest home on the backside of Last Chance Gulch, occupying a 2,500-square foot space on Jackson Street from 1974 to 1981. During this time, Scott and Deb welcomed daughters Lauren and Cody. In 1990 the Brown family moved to Billings and brought their love for the outdoors with them, opening the doors of The Base Camp to the Billings community. As the demand for outstanding outdoor products grew, the Helena Base Camp experienced some growing pains. In 2007, Scott made a visionary move by purchasing the old Gaslight Theater on Broadway, undertaking a remarkable remodeling effort. The result is the beautiful downtown keystone location that is widely cherished today. Lauren and Cody spent countless days in both stores playing, connecting with their family of staff, and perhaps occasionally annoying them while their parents worked tirelessly. Lauren recalls, “We hold fond memories of childhood adventures in both stores, from playing beneath the stairs at the original Helena store to witnessing the Billings location transform from

a maroon and pink bridal store into an earthy outdoor specialty haven, complete with aspen trees, a soothing water feature and the finest outdoor gear available. Our fortunate upbringing revolved around an outdoor lifestyle, complete with river trips, ski and camping adventures, and of course, access to incredible gear!” Fast forward to the spring of 2023, when Scott and Deb told their daughters they were putting the stores up for sale and retiring. The conversation evolved from a series of “What ifs,” “How would that work?” and “Can we do this?” to an enthusiastic and resounding “YES, let’s do it!” Lauren holds two degrees in Photography and Graphic Design and has made her home in Bozeman with her husband, Chris, and their three daughters, Mckenna, Cecelia and Ellis. She has successfully operated a photography business specializing in portraits, weddings, and commercial photography for more than 20 years. Cody is a graduate of Fashion Design and Merchandising from the University

of Hawai’i. Her desire to understand, holistically, the implications of global manufacturing took her to China, where she taught surfing and produced a photo documentary following the supply chain of a line of bamboo clothing. Her adventures continued in Ecuador, where she opened and ran successful restaurants and managed production of artisanal textiles throughout South America for largescale fashion brands, spending weekends paddling the amazing Amazonian rivers. Most recently, she worked as a project coordinator for a busy residential designbuild firm in Honolulu. Cody is coming full circle, moving back to Montana to take the helm with her sister, Lauren. “Our life paths leading up to this moment have been a culmination of experiences that have uniquely prepared us for this exciting new chapter. We wholeheartedly believe it is meant to be,” said Lauren.

This exciting change marks a new era for The Base Camp.

Lauren explains, “At the core of The Base Camp are values that resonate deeply with us—family, friends and a shared love for the great outdoors. These values extend beyond the conventional definition of family; they encompass our dedicated staff and the communities we proudly serve.” As Lauren says, “The Base Camp is really an outdoor lifestyle store.” They carry lines of outdoor and urban comfort clothing including Patagonia, Vuori, Free Fly and Prana. They also offer the best in footwear, from urban casual lines like Birkenstock, Blundstone, Dansko and Sorel, to rugged hiking footwear from Low, Salomon, Oboz and Merrell. In addition to their retail store, which also offers super cool gifts, The Base Camp offers a year-round rental program of backpacks, sleeping pads, tents, bear canisters, standup paddle boards, inflatable kayaks, pack rafts, paddles, PFDs, ice axes, cross-country skis and snowshoes. If this isn’t enough to lure you to their site or through their doors, consider the fact that their knowledgeable, local staff can direct you to all of Montana’s special places and outfit you to get the most out of your recreation endeavors. Whether you need the right gear and equipment for enjoying our wild lands or just comfortable and durable casual clothing to enjoy the Montana lifestyle, The Base Camp offers it all. Shop local and visit www.thebasecamp.com or stop into one of their two locations: 5 W. Broadway in Helena or 1730 Grand Ave. in Billings.

Two Rink Town,

Infinite Fun Most Bozeman locals and visitors associate the Gallatin Valley in the wintertime with its enjoyable outdoor scene. With such close proximity to cross-country ski trails, Bridger Bowl, Big Sky, hunting and ice fishing, it’s easy to take advantage of all the outdoor activities Bozeman has to offer. The idea of ice-skating or watching a hockey game is often overlooked when families are trying to decide what to do with their kids on the weekend. Many people forget that there are two indoor ice rinks in Bozeman that offer a variety of fun, family-friendly activities at affordable prices. Public skating is open to the general public at the Haynes Pavilion. Not only is ice-skating great exercise, it’s an inexpensive activity to do with the whole family. No need to own a pair of ice skates to partake in public skating, the Bozeman Amateur Hockey Association (BAHA) offers skate rentals for only $5 a pair. Public Skate schedules can be found at www. gallatinice.org.

Public Skating Entry Fees: Ç Adults: $10 Ç Children Ages 6-12: $5 Ç Children 6 and under: Free

Don’t know how to ice-skate? No problem! Learn to Skate classes (both hockey and figure skating) are offered on Sundays and Wednesdays throughout the season for all ages and abilities. Cost is only $75 for the five-week session. Registration can be found at www. gallatinice.org.

Don’t forget to save the date for Gallatin Ice’s Annual Skate with Santa event on Friday, December 22 at 6:45 p.m. Dress up in your favorite festive holiday attire and skate alongside Santa Claus and his helpers. Santa will be handing out candy canes and taking photos on the ice.

Going to a live hockey game is another way to enjoy the rinks in Bozeman. You don’t have

to play hockey, or even know the rules, to enjoy watching the game. Every Friday and/or Saturday evening at the Haynes Pavilion and Ice Barn, there are live hockey games, played by the Junior Icedogs, the Bozeman Stingers or the MSU Hockey Club.

TRY FUTSAL,

SOCCER’S SKILL-BUILDING INDOOR OFFSHOOT WRITTEN BY CATE WRIGHT | PHOTOS MONTANA SURF SOCCER CLUB

When the days get shorter and the snow gets deeper, soccer players move inside to sharpen their skills. School gyms and indoor soccer centers open their doors to the fast-paced, soccer-related game of futsal, a five-a-side game played with a smaller, harder ball that bounces less than a traditional soccer ball. Futsal is played on a court almost two and a half times smaller than a fullsized soccer field. The compact playing surface and quick speed of play teach athletes faster decision making and more precise technical skills while giving every player many more touches on the ball. “We see tremendous improvement in athletes who participate in the futsal program, and those skills translate directly to the soccer field once spring arrives,” said Joel Harris, Montana Surf Soccer Club’s Technical Director.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FUTSAL

Futsal was invented almost 100 years ago by Juan Carlos Ceriani, a teacher in Montevideo, Uruguay, whose aim was to create a version of soccer that could be played indoors. He blended rules from soccer, water polo, basketball and team handball to create the regulations for futsal. The name “Futsal” comes from the Portuguese futebol de salão and from the [Spanish] fútbol sala or fútbol de salón (all translatable as “indoor football”).

WHY PLAY FUTSAL?

It Keeps Kids Active During the Winter Months: Physical activity drops significantly during the winter for most children, according to a study by The University of Cambridge. Futsal keeps kids physically active during the dark, cold winter months by offering them a fun, indoor environment to run and play.

It Hones Technical Skills: The small size of the futsal court coupled with the fast pace of the game help youth athletes hone their technical skills. Players must pass quickly, control the ball with precision and move constantly to find open space for passing and dribbling. “Futsal places a large emphasis on technical skill in highpressure situations, which can be translated into the outdoor game. The sport is a great skill developer as it demands quick reflexes, fast thinking and pin-point passing,” according to The United States Youth Futsal Association. It Teaches Quick Decision Making: Futsal is a very fast-

paced game and players must learn to make smart decisions quickly. “Everything happens in a split-second on a tiny bit of the court. It’s no coincidence that people who have played futsal tend to be quick and skillful.” - Andrey Arshavin, former professional soccer player.

It’s Fun! More than anything, futsal is fun! It’s a great way to build fitness and friendships in an enjoyable atmosphere. Futsal is a high scoring game with lots of touches on the ball for all teammates, which keeps kids engaged, excited and having a wonderful time.

WHERE CAN YOU PLAY?

Futsal programs are available locally through Montana Surf Soccer Club at the Montana Surf Indoor Soccer Center in Belgrade. Montana Surf also offers technical training and pick-up soccer sessions throughout the winter. Register at www.montanasurf.org. For those interested in competitive or recreational soccer, registration is now open for the spring season for birth years 2005-2020. “During my childhood in Portugal, all we played was futsal. The small playing area helped me improve my close control, and whenever I played futsal I felt free. If it wasn’t for futsal, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.” - Cristiano Ronaldo Cate Wright is a mother of two, volunteer, and member of the Montana Surf/Blitzz FC Board of Directors. Her work with the Montana Surf Annual Fund is focused on ensuring that all children have access to the mental and physical benefits of sports, regardless of income.

It’s Snowing, It’s Snowing! WRITTEN BY TIM LYNCH

A volley of cheers thunders down the stairwell, streaming down into the kitchen as I pour the final steamy cascade over the coffee filter. It’s too dark to see out the kitchen window, but as I peer beyond the dim reflection, feathery flakes coat the fence post signaling the start of Montana’s magical season—winter! There is nothing like the first snow arriving as we sleep, a sneaky dusting on local peaks signaling change from the colorful mosaic of fall, promising a wonderland of activities and landscapes. Holiday lights twinkle on trees, soft light glows on neighborhood porches, plows mark paths on blanketed streets. We stroll after dinner; paw prints appear ahead as puffy clouds dance into the air. Our family loves the winter months and the piles of snow, mornings gliding up blanketed hills and surfing through pillowy glades. The first snowman of the year with an old trucker hat and forgotten scarf. Family traditions abound in the winter season. Winter takes us on cherished family sojourns that we plan each summer when we reserve forested cabins that our daughters have grown up traveling through snowy glens to reach. First, in the cozy confines of a

ski equipped Chariot. Then, with mini skis just long enough to break trail. Now, towing a sled with holiday favorites, cookies, pastas and caramel desserts. We are fortunate to live in this seasonal place; seasons transform our perspective, our paths and our passions. Winter is a time that always seems to bring the promise of wonder whether a holiday eve, a frozen lake or a powdery trail into a quiet wood. No matter what the day or the weather, we often find ourselves venturing right out the back door, exploring the snowy paths that wind through our neighborhood and the hills that surround our town. Gliding by ski, floating with snowshoes or gripping the trail with our Yak Trax, following the trail breakers of the day. Montana winter delivers joy, adventure and family experiences that will be our legacy. Join us in celebrating winter, snowy adventures and the Montana lands we value and love. Tim Lynch is the Manager of The Base Camp in Helena.

SCIENCE AT HOME:

INSTANT SNOW COURTESY OF MONTANA SCIENCE CENTER

Rendezvous

Ski Trails Where gold medal grooming and reliable snow come together to create a Nordic skier’s dream, the Rendezvous Ski Trails consist of more than 35 kilometers of gently rolling, beautifully groomed trails that wind through tall stands of lodgepole pine and open meadows. The trail system is located entirely on U.S. Forest Service land and is managed through a cooperative partnership between the Forest Service, the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce and the West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation (WYSEF). Ideally situated at just over 6,800 feet, the Rendezvous Ski Trails provide perfect conditions for high-altitude training or recreation at any time of the year. The altitude and location adjacent to the Continental Divide also mean that snow comes early and stays late. Trail passes are required when using the Rendezvous Ski Trails. From December 1 through March 31 daily passes can be purchased at the trailhead. Daily, season and family passes are available at the Hebgen Lake Ranger Station, the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce, and Freeheel and Wheel.

Materials:

Ç A grownup Ç A very cold day—it needs to be below 20 degrees Ç Boiling water Ç Gloves and eye protection Instructions:

Ç Get dressed to be outside Ç Boil water Ç Take the boiling water outside and throw it into the air Ç Watch it turn to snow! What’s going on?

The molecules are moving very fast when the water is boiling. When you take the water outside, it instantly desublimates (changes state of matter) from liquid to solid.

Take it further:

1. Try changing the temperature of the water – be sure to throw it away from any people!!! 2. What happens if it is warm but not boiling? What happens if it is cold? 3. How about putting water into the freezer at different temperatures? 4. Record your starting temperature and check it for solidity every 20 minutes or so. 5. Try blowing bubbles onto different surfaces. Do they freeze on metal but pop on wood? For more science fun join Montana Science Center for Winter Break Camps and Winter Wonderland. Keeping it Real

What's your word? WRITTEN BY BLAIR FJESETH

For so many years, I struggled with New Year’s resolutions. We would set them as a family and quickly fail, falling into old ways. Things changed when I met a wonderful woman, a parent of four, who told me she picked one word each year to incorporate into her daily life. This was her way of setting one intention for the year that was always at the front of her mind. I liked the idea; it seemed more simplistic and achievable in the long term. My first attempt at an intention word was “organize,” and I have to say it changed my life. I organized things like the house, my iPhone folders and my calendar for better productivity, but I also organized my mind, priorities and, therefore, my life. This new approach was simple yet achievable and had a more significant impact than vowing to go to the gym three days a week. As we head into 2024, I am torn between two intention word choices: “boundaries” and “resourcefulness.” But what fun is a journey if you are going it alone? I posed this challenge to my children and, while they are a bit young, we spent an evening discussing setting intentions and the meaning of words. I pulled up the thesaurus on my phone to help find words they might like. I shared how “organize” changed me and announced my new word for 2024: “tenacity,”

26

december 2023

which was not originally on my list, but after reading more about power words, it felt like a good choice for what I know is coming in 2024. My 5-year-old shouted “No!” when I asked her first what her word might be. No surprise there. She can be as salty as the sea. I proposed the word “learn” to her as she was learning new things every day and would be going to kindergarten in 2024. She all but shouted, “NO!” When I pivoted my attention to my eldest child, my eyes pleading for him to help me out here, he looked at me and said, “I’ll do it if you give me three words.” With a huff, I shrugged and said, “Fine, whatever you want,” feeling defeated and preparing for what I thought would be some potty word or joke. Then I heard him say, “Be on top.” Asking him what he meant and how he planned to live by this phrase, he talked about wanting to be the best at everything: school, sports, being a brother and good son. We discussed how to achieve this goal: reading more, practicing more and being more helpful at home. He said he was up for the challenge and, after all, he is my oldest and a hyper-competitive kid. I will chalk that up to a win.

My 8-year-old was about to wiggle out of his seat, exclaiming, “I’ve got mine, I’ve got mine.” On his turn, he chose the word “fun.” I thought he was joking, but then he spoke about wanting to be less serious about the small stuff and incorporate fun into everything he does. He has always been my worrywart, so the thoughtfulness behind his word choice was really moving. My 5-year-old, who finally came around to the idea, sat in contemplation and then declared her word would be “earth,” which is not surprising as our entire world revolves around her. She reasoned that she loves the earth and wants to care for it. This was no doubt influenced by the Earth Awareness week they just had at pre-k. Our words: Fun, Be on Top, Earth, and Tenacity. Our mission is to integrate these notions into our everyday life and make proactive changes to our day-to-day. I plan to print and post the words strategically throughout the house and in school notebooks as a constant reminder of our 2024 intentions. I will check back in on the progress and see if, for the first time, we as a family can stick to our New Year’s goals. I would love to hear your New Year’s resolutions, traditions or intention words at info@mtparent. com. Blair Fjeseth is a working professional and proud Montana mom. Tips for

Peace, Love and Harmony in Your Home this Holiday Season WRITTEN BY CINDY BALLEW

The holidays are full of joy, excitement and storybook family closeness, right? Sometimes. And sometimes the endless to-do lists, financial pressure, stresses and losses within families can be exacerbated during the holidays and overwhelming for parents. Children can pick up on the stress of their parents, and they also have their own stresses, such as lost sleep, too much stimulation and dealing with unmet expectations. Yikes. It can be a lot to navigate. How do we celebrate, have fun with our kids and keep ourselves in the holiday spirit? Here are some tried and true ways to make the holidays more enjoyable.

1. Stick to routines as much as you can. Keep bedtime

consistent and be sure everyone is getting enough sleep. Create a quiet home environment in the evening to wind down and prepare for bed. This will help your child replenish their energy and keep their emotions regulated.

2. Eat healthy. Balance all the holiday sweets with plenty of fruits, vegetables and protein to counteract the sugar. Everyone will feel better.

3. Prepare your child for upcoming events and changes in their schedule. Talking with them ahead of time about things that

are out of the ordinary, like travel or visitors, will help them feel more prepared and less likely to melt down.

4. Carve out time for one-on-one connection with your child. Even 10 minutes of your undivided attention makes a

difference in how secure a child feels during what can feel like upheaval during the holidays. Relax and play, read a book, take a walk or just snuggle and chat to keep your bond strong.

6. Embrace the winter weather and get outside. Fresh air, sunshine and physical activity will reduce stress and help everyone sleep better.

7. Give back. Volunteer as a family at a place that has meaning

for you, like a food bank, shelter or organization collecting toys for children. Giving to others promotes happiness and feelings of well-being and teaches your child to look out for others.

8. Manage the expectations your children have for what they will receive for gifts. Be positive, but honest. Let them know it’s really fun to make a list but they probably won’t get everything on it. Most kids don’t, and that’s OK.

Know that your best is good enough. Go easy on yourself. Hallmark perfection is a myth. So forget about making the third batch of cookies or wrapping each gift like it’s being judged in a show. Take time to savor all that’s good. Enjoy the lights and the music and the essence of the season. Breathe and make a snowman with your kids. That’s where you will find peace, love and harmony.

5. Practice gratitude. Talk about what you are grateful for as a

family to put the focus on the true meaning of the holidays instead of materialism. Start a gratitude journal where everyone can write what they are thankful for each day. What a wonderful family memento.

Respiratory Illnesses

Holidays

around the Holidays

WRITTEN BY ANGIE OSTROWSKI, MD PEDIATRICIAN, BOZEMAN HEALTH DEACONESS HOSPITAL FORT PECK AND AFTER HOURS PROVIDER, MONTANA PEDIATRICS

As the holidays approach each year, I often witness parents’ concern about the inevitable cold and flu symptoms that will affect their children and families. These winter months are filled with school and community events, family and friends visiting in close quarters, travel and the numerous viruses that circulate this time of the year. When the cold weather spell hits, it’s important to know whether your family is in a high-risk group for respiratory illness. These are families who have children under the age of 2 years, but especially under 1 year of age. In addition, children who were premature at birth or have chronic medical conditions, especially lung diseases such as asthma. Among these vulnerable groups, infants are particularly at risk, especially those with siblings in daycare or school who may carry and transmit respiratory viruses. There are many respiratory viruses such as RSV and influenza that can affect the lower airways and cause cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and low oxygen levels. In addition, some viruses can cause upper airway symptoms such as croup, which manifests with a barking cough, hoarseness and difficulty breathing. During the winter months, regular prevention practices are crucial. Good hand hygiene and minimizing contact with sick individuals (as best you can) are powerful measures, along with maintaining a healthy diet and good sleep. With

babies specifically, when traveling or flying take steps to shield them from unnecessary contact with strangers by covering their stroller or car seat. With children of all ages, keeping firm boundaries and advocating for your child’s wellbeing around contact and hygiene establishes a safe, protected environment for your little one. Influenza and COVID vaccines continue to be an effective and safe prevention measure for these viruses. If your child is too young for these vaccines, they still benefit from their regular caretakers and siblings receiving them. In addition, inquire with your healthcare provider about the new RSV monoclonal antibody (Nirsevimab) available for infants and high-risk children that has shown a significant decrease in hospitalization rates for RSV 1. If your child does fall ill, there are steps you can take to aid in their recovery. For younger children, using bulb suction or saline drops to clear their nasal passages can provide relief. Ensuring they remain well-hydrated and monitoring for signs of worsening respiratory distress are vital. Pay attention to indicators such as increased work of breathing 2, poor color, difficulty drinking and persistent fever that does not improve over several days. If you notice any of these worrisome signs, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. If your child is under 3 months old, it is even more imperative to remain vigilant and seek medical attention for any concerns or signs of illness.

As a pediatrician for 15 years, I have witnessed the extensive impact viral respiratory illnesses have on young children, families and our communities. My own twins were born in December and were particularly vulnerable to respiratory illness during their first winter season. As an active family that enjoys traveling and outdoor activities, we exercised hand hygiene and extra caution regarding our surroundings when out and about to prevent the transmission of winter germs. Taking these measures to reduce exposure can make a significant difference. Remember, what is a simple cold for adults may be a different story when it comes to babies and young children who are more susceptible to respiratory illnesses and can experience more severe symptoms. By consistently practicing good preventative measures and promptly seeking medical attention when necessary, you can safeguard your child’s health and ensure a smoother winter season. The Gallatin Valley YMCA Healthy Learning Academy will open its doors to dozens of children starting January 2024, operating as a trustworthy learning center for the Gallatin Valley and beyond. In addition to offering a curriculum and quality programming, they will operate with a mission of empowering children and their families. I am so very proud that our families now have the opportunity to send their children to a place that stresses a healthy lifestyle through curriculum-based, regular physical education programs inclusive at the YMCA. The numerous benefits of mindfulness programming and outdoor activities such as gardening provides life-stage skills to our families,” said Dana Lasher, CEO Gallatin Valley YMCA. Having an all-inclusive centralized YMCA early childhood learning center provides numerous benefits to families. The Healthy Learning Academy plans to open with space for 20 children with the opportunity to expand services in the future. “As we continue to energize our mission to serve the needs of our community, we are excited to implement our very own Healthy Learning Academy at the Gallatin Valley Y. Our new learning center will focus on promoting healthy minds, healthy bodies and a healthy planet. We are looking forward to announcing additional initiatives in the near future,” said Mike Collins, VP of Operations. Always held on the first Saturday in December, the Stroll kicks off the holiday season with a bang! Starting at 4:30 p.m., Santa Claus will work his way down Main Street singing Christmas carols and lighting the downtown holiday lights with festive friends in tow. BOZEMAN WINTER

Farmers Market What began 10 years ago as a small group of farmers huddled together outside selling their winter veggies is now a successful, thriving market with a bounty of local vegetables and farm products. The Bozeman community’s demand for a direct producer-to-consumer experience has grown, and so has the Bozeman Winter Farmers Market. You will find a lot more than traditional winter staples like potatoes and onions. Area farmers have worked hard to drastically increase the amount of fresh greens and the variety of vegetables they can offer. The market is held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds in Exhibit Building 4.

ARGENTINE BALLET STAR TO DANCE IN

YELLOWSTONE BALLET COMPANY’S

the

Nutcracker Lucas Segovia stars in Yellowstone Ballet Company’s 32nd annual production of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic The Nutcracker, Sunday, December 10 at 1 and 4:30 p.m. at the Willson Auditorium. He will perform the roles of the Nutcracker Prince and the Cavalier. Originally from Buenos Aires, Segovia joined Ballet Argentina as a soloist under Julio Bocca’s direction. He was promoted to Principal Dancer shortly after and was the only dancer performing a solo piece in Bocca’s farewell performance for over 300,000 people and broadcasted on national TV. As for knowing when he wanted to dance, Segovia said, “It caught me by surprise. It was a matter of luck. I didn’t start dancing until I was 16 after a female friend (who was a jazz dancer) convinced me to watch some dancing.” While watching, Segovia realized something. “It wasn’t a girly thing. There were a lot of guys taking classes, and the teacher was a man. I thought, ‘Why not? I’ll give it a try.’ In countries where cultures are not so stimulated it’s hard to say, ‘I want to be a dancer’ and make a living doing it. But I was able to do it.” When asked what dance means to him, Segovia said, “Passion. The reason that I’m in this country and far away from my family is passion. It’s a way for me to express myself; it’s the best way to say what I want to say.” This passion has taken Segovia to major theaters in the United States, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Russia and Cuba, among other places. Segovia has been a part of The Washington Ballet and of Morphoses/ The Wheeldon Company, directed by Christopher Wheeldon. He also danced with The Joffrey Ballet for six seasons, performing in virtually the entire repertoire of the company as a soloist or principal dancer. Lucas has danced works by choreographers like Balanchine, Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Alexei Ratmansky, William Forsythe and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, among many others. Throughout his career Segovia has danced in more than 400 cities around the globe, performing in some of the most important venues for dance in the world and has been awarded with the Premio Clarin, the most prestigious recognition for the Arts in Argentina.

She has performed professionally with Ballet Tucson, Ballet West, Milwaukee Ballet, Colorado Ballet and Madison Ballet. She holds a B.F.A. in Ballet Performance from the University of Utah. Enhancing the production are the School of Classical Ballet Company, Billings, Bridger View Ballet Center and Circus Center of Bozeman/406CIRQUE. To encourage families to attend, every adult ticket purchase qualifies for a free child’s ticket. EMSELLA Technology Restores Confidence and Comfort for

Moms Who Face Urinary Incontinence WRITTEN BY DR. HEIDI TUTHILL

Motherhood is a beautiful journey filled with joy, laughter and, yes, challenges. I want to break the silence about one of these challenges: urinary incontinence, which is a concern faced by 25 million adult Americans, approximately 80% of them women. Whether it’s a result of childbirth or the natural aging process, the impact of urinary incontinence on a woman’s quality of life can be significant. As a musculoskeletal and neuroradiologist with Advanced Medical Imaging (AMI), I have encountered decades of women searching for a solution to this problem. And now, AMI offers advanced technology that provides support for those who need it. Enter Emsella, a revolutionary device that aims to restore confidence and comfort by addressing incontinence with an innovative approach. Emsella is unlike any other method we’ve seen so far. This groundbreaking device employs magnetic energy to stimulate the entire pelvic floor simultaneously. Picture it as a targeted workout for the muscles responsible for urinary control, offering thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions—equivalent to thousands of Kegel exercises. One of the standout features of Emsella is its chair design, ensuring that patients can undergo treatment without the need for disrobing. This thoughtful approach allows women to maintain their comfort and dignity. The chair design not only provides convenience but also eliminates any pain or downtime associated with the procedure. After just a 30-minute session, mothers can confidently walk out, ready to resume their daily activities without interruption. For women who have been dealing with incontinence for years, or attempted other solutions, it can be incredible to imagine a treatment that requires no special preparation or recovery time. Mothers with busy lives are offered an efficient and painless solution with Emsella. The 30-minute session fits seamlessly into a mom’s schedule, allowing them to prioritize their health without sacrificing precious 42

time with their little ones. Scheduling your sessions with AMI is just as easy; our Cottonwood location can often accommodate same- or next-day appointments for Emsella. Numbers don’t lie, and the clinical study results for Emsella speak volumes. In a recent study, 95% of patients reported satisfaction and significant improvement in their quality of life after just six treatments with BTL Emsella. These numbers are a testament to the efficacy of the device in addressing the root causes of incontinence and enhancing the overall well-being of mothers. Beyond the statistics and clinical studies, Emsella is about empowering mothers to take control of their health and regain confidence. The device not only targets incontinence but also nurtures a sense of well-being, allowing mothers to focus on the joys of motherhood without the burden of urinary concerns. No more standing on the sidelines when you’re at the trampoline park with your family or anxiety about uncontrolled sneezes. By offering a solution that is discreet, efficient and painless, Emsella is a beacon of hope for mothers looking to reclaim their comfort and quality of life. Motherhood is a journey that deserves to be enjoyed to the fullest, and AMI offers Emsella to ensure that every mother can do just that. With its innovative chair design, efficient 30-minute sessions and impressive clinical validation, Emsella stands as a revolutionary solution for mothers dealing with incontinence. It’s time to embrace a life free from the limitations of urinary concerns, allowing mothers to focus on what matters most—their well-being and the beautiful moments they share with their children. About Heidi Tuthill, MD – Dr. Tuthill is a musculoskeletal and neuroradiologist at Advanced Medical Imaging (AMI). AMI is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and is a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence in Montana, with two convenient locations in Bozeman. You can learn more at amibozeman.com.
