Advertising is not always a tangible thing.

Some businesses have a budget for advertising, and others don’t. So, as a small business – when you can’t always predict, measure or see the results from specific advertising – it can be hard to put your dollars on the line. I have a story I would like to tell about a particular small business that chose to place their faith in Montana Parent. And I put my faith, and the safety of my child, into the hands of that business. My oldest child met a boy at college this year. He lives in Philadelphia and she lives in Bozeman. All was great until the more than three-week winter break arrived. Desperate to visit him, even for just a few days, she begged to start looking at flights. Everything was either over $1,000 or a minimum of 17-hours travel time, which included an overnight at the airport. We almost gave up, until I remembered an advertisement I saw in our magazine for Platinum Travel. Figuring it was worth a shot, I sent an email. Christina Dear (such an appropriate last name) replied immediately and said she would start working on something for us. I was busy with conference calls all day so I put her in touch with my 18-year-old daughter who would be flying alone for the first time. We gave Christina a budget, preferred dates of travel and let her run with it. We ended up with roundtrip tickets (purchased a little more than a week before travel – DURING THE HOLIDAYS) for $500,

excellent flights, easy layovers – the works, all with my daughter in mind (traveling alone for the first time, making the most of her travel days etc.). Travel day arrived and the proverbial wheels fell of the bus. As we were walking out the door on December 27 at 5:15 a.m., we received a text that the flight was delayed three hours, making my kid’s layover almost impossible. Christina worked with us in the early morning hours, giving us options. When that flight sat on the runway in Bozeman for an extra hour, we knew she couldn’t make the new connection. Christina texted with my daughter, keeping her calm, all while on the phone with the airlines, working magic. If you traveled anywhere over the holidays, then you probably know how the next part of this story (and my daughter’s journey) goes. Same thing for the trip home. Again, Christina Dear was there with my child the whole way. She says she’ll never travel over the holidays again, for anyone. And I’m glad she learned this lesson herself. I learned a lesson as well: I will never book travel arrangements on my own again. Having someone in my corner, working to make everything successful so I could concentrate on other things, like work and my kids, was a game changer! If your child is traveling for camp this summer and you want peace of mind, call Christina Dear at Platinum Travel. She will be with your precious cargo every step of the way. And if your family is traveling, anywhere, anytime, call Christina. Take all of the hassle, pain and aggravation out of travel.

SUMMER 2022

Are You Resilient? Adaptive? Or Just Annoyed and Over It? WRITTEN BY KATIE GOODMAN

As a parent, and director of Camp Equinox, I have been thinking a lot about kids and resilience. About creativity. Being flexible and adaptive when things change unexpectedly. And about falling apart. Two years in and this still is not easy. During our first summer of the pandemic, we were just so relieved to be together again. Everything was thrilling and exciting. That was the case for year two – last summer – as well. Our need for connection was, well, quite literally desperate. And summer camp (outdoors! no masks! playing with friends!) was the antidote. And these kids have been remarkably resilient. But two years later… How resilient are we now? Are we permanently affected by the pandemic? The insecurity of it? The changing rules? Kids can be spectacularly accepting of changing rules. In fact, some of my campers love to try to change the rules of games all the time. They make them better – well, usually. Sometimes vastly worse! But always it’s a hilarious adventure. One of Camp Equinox’s favorite games is an improv activity called “Game-O-Matic” that you may have seen our adult improv comedy troupe, Spontaneous Combustibles, play at Sweet Pea. We make up new rules right before your eyes and then quickly try to play the game without ever having played it. (Sounds very much like what we’ve been doing for two years, doesn’t it?) The new games are often a delightful mess. But the fun is in trying to come up with silly rules. Working this mental muscle is definitely one way to train our brains, so we can transfer that skill over to other areas and learn to make the pandemic easier to live with.

30

february 2022

Kids have an intrinsic interest in rules. Rules are deeply important, of course. They give kids’ boundaries and they help them feel secure. “I know the rules. I’m safe if I follow the rules.” But the pandemic keeps changing the rules on us. And it’s not always fun. “You can go hang out with friends without masks! Wait, nope! Now you can’t!” And not everyone plays by the same rules in a community. Masks and vaccine debates have torn families apart, and my guess is, some children’s friendships too. But the real gift of youth is resilience, flexibility, the ability to adapt to change. While some of us older adults struggle to get our brains’ inelasticity to catch up and adapt, I notice my younger early-20’s staff, and even younger interns, are bright and positive, flexible and adaptive. One thing about being in school is you are prepped for learning. That’s why you’re there. So learning is a given and an expectation. After college, and after the early stages of a first job, learning can taper off if you don’t tend to it. I think we parents would find this all easier if we could harness our flexible, adaptive learning brains like our kids do. Learning something new during the pandemic like cooking, playing an instrument, trying a new sport or language, or even just a new pattern like “Family Board Game Night.” These all help us to navigate the rough terrain of the shifting situation, and make it easier to learn how to adjust, and can help lift our spirits when we need it. My campers inspire me. Equinox has literally been my favorite two months each year of the past two years. I wish it could go on all year. They are flexible, resilient and can make anything fun. So, while we’re hoping for a summer where we can once again use our indoor space, let down our guard, have some rules that don’t change in, say, midJuly again (!), we know the kids’ bright joy and adaptability will be there to keep the community buoyant. I’m grateful to them. And I’m trying to learn from them.

SPRING BREAK DAY CAMP At the Ridge Spring Break Day Camp, children will participate in group fitness classes, gym play, swimming, age-appropriate workouts with a fitness instructor and Playzone fun. Gallatin Valley YMCA

Adds Fourth

Summer Camp Location Over the last decade, Gallatin Valley YMCA summer camps have grown to incorporate three different locations to cater to our evergrowing community. During this past summer of 2021, the Y operated camps out of Hawthorn Elementary (Adventure Day Camp K-4), The Commons (Adventure Day Camp K-4), and the Gallatin Valley YMCA (Teen Camp). Even with these three locations, camps were booked to capacity before May! After a fun, adventure-filled summer with great feedback and support from camp staff, Y families, and the Y team – they decided to open a NEW fourth location for the summer of 2022.

When asked about their favorite summer memory, most people will tell you about cold ice cream on hot days, going to the lake with friends or the summer of ’99 when they fell in love with a boy from Iowa they met on a family vacation at the beach – à la Sandy from Grease. However, if you ask the staff at Gallatin Valley YMCA about their favorite summer memory, the answer is easy: summer camp! While only some staff members had the opportunity to enjoy Y summer camps as children, almost all of them attended at least one summer camp in their lifetime. Even now, as adults, the staff are eager for summer to start so they can share the joy, magic and all-around summer fun that the Y’s summer camp bring to kids in our community. The Gallatin Valley YMCA has hosted summer camp for almost as long as it has been serving the Gallatin Valley community and has continued to perfect the age-old tradition of summer camp by fostering a culture of belonging in a fun and educational manner. Summer camps are 10-week day camps for kids in grades kindergarten through seventh that operate from June through August, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

32

february 2022

The Gallatin Valley YMCA is happy to announce a new Adventure Day Camp (K- 4) location in Belgrade at Heck-Quaw Elementary this summer. Join them for a summer full of fun exploring earth science, white-water rafting, creating mythical worlds, playing games, getting messy, going for the gold at the Olympics, visiting local farms and animals and celebrating holidays – along with beating the heat with water games, giant slip n’ slides and more. Registration for all YMCA summer camps opens Tuesday, March 1 for Y members and Tuesday, March 15 for nonmembers. In addition to a new summer camp location, the Gallatin Valley YMCA will also be offering four separate week-long sports camps this summer for kids in grades kindergarten through fifth who want to learn more about a variety of sports. SUMMER 2022

+ Activities Sneak peek

Stephanie Scott, a former Montana public school teacher, found a passion for bringing engaging STEAM lessons to the children of central Montana in the fall of 2020. Snapology sort of fell into her lap when she was thinking about using her business background to switch to the private sector of education. Snapology, a 10-year-old educational enrichment franchise, was founded by two sisters in Pittsburgh, PA, who wanted more enrichment activities for their own children. Little did they know it would expand to 27 states and 13 countries and be awarded the numberone children’s enrichment franchise in the world. After about six months of research, Stephanie decided the programs were top-notch and invested in the first Montana franchise. “Our programs are unique because we use LEGO bricks to teach STEAM. Kids are engaged and learning the concepts much more than they are with non-engaging materials,” she remarked. “When combining LEGO bricks with learning STEAM, I have found that 90% of my students are engaged 100% of the time.” Snapology of Helena, Bozeman, Butte and surrounding communities offers more than 80 programs to choose from and more than 1,500 hours of standards-based curriculum. Every lesson teaches one or more components of STEAM. “We have had a slow start due to COVID, but with more and more schools opening up to outside organizations, we’re making our way in,” said Stephanie. “We currently serve Helena, Townsend, Whitehall and Bozeman public schools for after-school enrichment. We also hold events such as Bricks and Brews at a local brewery in Helena and Parents’ Night Out in Bozeman at the YMCA. We are a mobile business and partner up with organizations and businesses to bring our programming to you!” Last summer, Snapology held camps in Bozeman at MSU and in Helena at the Sleeping Giant Parks and other locations. This summer, they will be partnering with the YMCA of Gallatin Valley, Sleeping Giant Parks in Helena, Sylvan Learning Center in Helena and The Commons in Bozeman, MSU, Townsend and Whitehall.

Menstruation at Camp WRITTEN BY MORGAN COMEY

Ahh, summer camp … sweet, sweet, s’mores, sunshine and laughter. While visiting home recently, I opened my closet to a familiar sight: My old camp T-shirt with names of friends scribbled alongside jokes long forgotten. What can I say? I’m 26 years-old and a lover of summer camp. Soft golden hues of nostalgia color my camp memories, but I haven’t forgotten the tough times, like when my period took me by surprise during camp in seventh grade. I lacked proper supplies and, frankly, the attention span to keep track of my cycle. I got blood everywhere and was mortified that someone might see and know that I, Morgan, had a period. Not to mention there was no running water; I was terrified that a bear would follow the scent of blood and eat me; and a cloud of mosquitos covered my every inch. If there is a possibility your tween/teen might get their period at camp this summer, keep reading. Even if they’ve gotten it before, keep reading. If they probably won’t get it because they’re a little too young, or they’re only going for a few days, or they’re older and use birth control to avoid getting a period…keep reading.

february 2022

Since my own experience, I’ve worked more than 500 days with youth in the wilderness. I now realize bears are NOT blood-thirsty sharks and menstruation isn’t dirty or shameful. I’ve also accepted that even the best camp counselors occasionally forget to bring extra menstrual products or may be at a loss for how to discuss menstruation. Plus, if your kiddo is transgender or non-binary, their counselor might make assumptions about their anatomy and not check in about their period. As a parent, you have lots to pack already – sunscreen alone is an epic endeavor. During this process, I encourage you to pause and calmly

check in with your child about their period. If they’ve had it before, make sure they’re wellequipped, even if it’s not supposed to come while they’re gone. At camp, cycles are often unpredictable, usually due to new stressors or an increase in activity. If your child might get their first period, and you haven’t already talked about menstruation, now is the time to discuss it. Approach them gently, help them understand the process, field questions and recognize they might be awkward. Be sure to let them know they can ask an adult counselor for help once they’re at camp. If they use disposable products like tampons and pads, bring extras, just in case. Pads might be less stressful for a first period. However, it can be empowering to pack tampons to try too, and you can add liners as a back-up. Plus, tampons are useful when swimming. Wipes might help your camper feel clean if they will have limited showers. If backpacking, they will need something to pack out their garbage to follow Leave No Trace Principles (LNT). Plan a discreet method to be mindful of potential shyness. I carry a lightweight, dark-colored stuff sac with soap, tea, and two or more plastic bags inside. One bag holds clean, unused products. Trash goes in the other(s): used tampons, pads, applicators, toilet paper and wipes, along with a dry tea bag or crushed aspirin to minimize odor. Everything lives in one convenient place. Applicator-free tampons reduce weight and bulk but require practice and intimacy with one’s body. They might be better for older teens. Be sure to remind your child to wash their hands using drinkable water before inserting or removing tampons.

Period underwear comes in different sizes, styles and absorbencies. To use, just put them on! They cannot be worn while swimming, so if camp is centered around water activities, bring another method. Your child will need several pairs, washing each between each wear. Depending on camp facilities, you may need to practice handwashing. When backpacking, pack a plastic bag to transport underwear between washes.

Menstrual cups are versatile, long-lasting and create minimal waste but have a learning curve. If this is a choice you child is interested in exploring, check out next month’s issue of Montana Parent for an article all about menstrual cups.

Beyond menstrual products, consider packing ibuprofen and/or heat pads for cramps, try adhesive toe-warmers for camping. Help keep summer camps clear of trash and follow LNT principles. Make sure your child packs out all period waste. Whew, that was a lot of period talk! With so many options for your kiddo, I know you’ll find what’s right for your family and ensure your child leaves with realistic expectations for managing their period at camp.

Although evidence shows menstrual products don’t attract bears, unusual scents can attract other animals. Therefore, unscented products are best, and your child might need to store toiletries, including used menstrual products, with food.

Participants can drop in or reserve a spot in advance for play periods, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Once there, guests can move through the space allowing their child’s curiosity to choose which thoughtfully curated stations they want to explore. In addition, embedded in select open play sessions, State of Play, will be offering a variety of engaging 30-minute classes throughout the week such as music and movement, yoga and mindfulness, sign language, puppetry and storytelling. When children play, they develop important life skills such as problem solving, collaboration, independence, communication, perseverance and emotional regulation. Open-ended play gives children the freedom and courage to explore and imagine; it provides opportunities to highlight the beauty of spontaneity and nurture creativity and innovation. Bridger Bowl Ski Area Supports Breastfeeding Mothers with a

Mamava Lactation Pod Bridger Bowl Ski Area has announced the installation of a Mamava lactation pod, available to the ski area’s breastfeeding employees and guests. The pod is located on the fourth floor of Saddle Peak Lodge. Bridger Bowl is the second ski area in the country to have a Mamava pod and the only west coast mountain to support breastfeeding women with a lactation pod. “We knew we needed a space for nursing mothers,” said Bob Petitt, General Manager of Bridger Bowl Ski Area. “It’s great to have a comfortable place for mothers and their babies.” “Mamava lactation suites are designed for breastfeeding and pumping on the go so that women can continue to live their lives without compromising their breastfeeding goals and vice versa,” said Rachel Kaulius. Kaulius, Mamava Account Executive, mom and a native of Gardiner, grew up skiing at Bridger Bowl. “It makes me so happy that my home mountain is supporting breastfeeding mothers at work and empowering women to get outside to do what they love.” Having a dedicated space, designed for breastfeeding—with easy-to-disinfect surfaces and good airflow—is even more important this ski season, with COVID-19 protocols limiting spaces that are available to guests. Providing support for breastfeeding—and all breastfeeding mothers—is as critical as ever. A recent survey by Mamava and Medela found that COVID-19 has made moms even more committed to breastfeeding, in part for its immunological benefits. The Bridger Bowl pod is also a notable one for Mamava – until recently Montana was the only state without a Mamava pod. With this installation and another in a Missoula Walmart store, Mamava pods are now available in all 50 states.

City of Bozeman Announces Eight-Week

Paid Parental Leave Policy for Employees In January, the City of Bozeman signed into effect a new policy to provide paid parental leave of up to eight weeks for city employees. The policy recognizes the importance of bonding and caring for a new child, and hopes to support parents during an exciting and stressful time in their lives. The policy provides eligible city employees with up to eight weeks paid parental leave in the event of a birth or adoption, either experienced by themselves or with their spouse or partner. Qualified employees must have been employed by the city for at least 180 days. City Manager Jeff Mihelich says, “Adding a new family member is both thrilling and overwhelming. I’m proud to say that as an employer we are taking steps to ensure that city staff have a means of financial support as they go through a big life event!” Mihelich adds, “The city of Bozeman strives to be a best-in-class employer and already offers great benefits as a government agency. However, now more than ever, it is critical that we do everything we can to retain the great employees that we have. This new policy is just another way for us to make the city a great place for employees to have a long career.” Implementing a paid parental leave policy was identified as a part of the City of Bozeman’s work to be a more inclusive city. The goal of this work is to ensure that every resident, visitor and City of Bozeman employee feels welcomed and valued and can thrive no matter their race, identity or life circumstance. Several cities and counties in Montana have enacted similar policies. The City of Bozeman is the first local municipality employer to offer a full eight weeks to employees. :: calendars, blog & more @ MTPARENT.COM ::

Improving

Early Literacy and Reading Readiness in Bozeman

The Bozeman School District, in partnership with the Bozeman Schools Foundation, recently launched a new early literacy program. Through “Bozeman Reads” the district hopes to help parents and child care providers throughout Bozeman better prepare children for their educational careers. “In Bozeman, 31% of students entering kindergarten this year are below the benchmark for requisite literacy skills,” notes Interim Superintendent Casey Bertram, who championed both the Bozeman Reads program and the district’s hiring of an early literacy specialist. “Studies show that a child is 90% more likely to remain a poor reader at the end of the fourth grade if the child is a poor reader at the end of first grade – which is why we can’t wait for kindergarten to begin the learning process.” The district’s approach to early literacy is grounded in the latest research, known broadly as the “science of reading,” and built on the philosophy that parents are their children’s first teachers. While Bozeman Read’s message of “Play, Talk, Read” might seem simple, Bozeman School District experts know that connecting with parents and children before they enter school can make a huge difference. “Cognitive processes develop rapidly in the first few years of life. In fact, by age 3, roughly 85% of the brain is developed,” notes Megan Roth, the district’s Early Literacy Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA). “However, traditional education takes place in grades K-12, which begin at age 5.” Because of the importance of this early phase in a child’s development, Bozeman Reads is targeting families with preschool-aged children for the first phase of its programming. Roth is hosting a series of interactive Family Nights at Hyalite, Irving, Whittier and Emily Dickson elementary schools over the next few years. Parents with children between the ages of 1 and 4 are invited to spend an evening learning and playing together while they share a meal with other families. Parents and caregivers of young children can register for an upcoming Bozeman Reads Family Night at https://sites.google.com/bsd7.org/bozeman-reads/home. Using interactive materials developed by the Lee Pesky Foundation – including placemats, dry erase markers and brightly colored teddy bear figures known as “manipulatives” – parents are shown how to engage their children in simple and easy ways during meals. Each family attending Family Night receives a gift bag with their own placemats, markers and manipulatives. The Bozeman Schools Foundation raised more than $45,000 in community support to launch this new program. “Bozeman is a community that values education and really cares about the next generation of students,” said the Foundation’s Executive Director, Jennifer Lammers. “Generous support from the Bozeman Noon Rotary, Langlas & Associates and Wentana, LLC – Billings based Wendy’s franchisee for restaurants across Montana – made Bozeman Reads possible.”

Sage Learning Center Tutoring students toward success WRITTEN BY KATIE MARONEY

It’s no surprise to parents that many children have struggled academically since the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on education, starting with the 2019-2020 school year. When schools switched to remote learning, the teachers at Sage Learning Center stepped up to the challenge. Since the start of the pandemic, Sage has never wavered in prioritizing the needs of our students. From offering tutoring sessions via Zoom to one-on-one sessions with face masks, every teacher at Sage has been willing to accommodate every student. They are also committed to closing any gaps in a student’s education, beginning with the foundational skills. Structure and routine are two of the most crucial aspects of a student’s education. Children thrive with structure, and they find comfort in routine. However, structure and routine were taken from students when everyone went online. Fortunately, Sage offers a warm, welcoming environment giving children the structure they crave. Each session at Sage begins on the hour and runs for 55 minutes. During this time, the teacher works through a program that has been tailored to each student’s individual needs. These sessions are one-on-one, which helps teachers get to know each student better, and are tailored specifically to each student as they grow academically. Teachers also strive to incorporate the student’s special interests into their program. In addition to this method of teaching, students are able to bring in schoolwork they may be struggling with. During their one-onone session, their teacher can address specific homework concerns, which can alleviate stress at home. The benefits of tutoring can truly change the trajectory of a child’s education. Sage Learning Center cares deeply for each and every student. They have a passion for education, but more importantly, they have a passion for seeing students become the best possible versions of themselves – both academically and personally. Katie Maroney is a teacher at Sage Learning Center.

New Column

Ask Flora WRITTEN BY FLORA MCCORMICK DIAGRAM BRUCE PERRY

Hello Montana Parent readers! Welcome to the Ask Flora column, where you can ask your parenting questions (about kids between 2 and 10) and get answers from a Licensed Counselor and Parenting Coach of 12 years.

Q.

How do you encourage empathy and help your kids have ownership over their mistakes, so they say they’re sorry and make it right? Great question! And let me say first that about six variations of this question were submitted this month. So, it’s a common issue on many Montana parent minds. First of all, forcing an apology may be counterproductive because it can trigger your child to shut down with a “Shame-brain” response (Brene Brown). In addition, it really doesn’t move the situation forward, and repeat behaviors are likely. Instead of an apology, I recommend what I call “solution-focused ownership,” which sounds like this:

Step 1 To encourage empathy, point out what you notice and see if they solve it on their own:

» “I see that Sam is crying from that toy being taken away.” Or “I notice your sister is very upset that you took her stuffy without asking.”

Step 2 Direct the child to take ownership to make the situation right in that moment, or to make a plan for different choices in the future (and state that plan to the person who was upset or wronged). » “You grabbed that toy from Jackson, and now he’s sad. child a chance for a “do-over.”

What can we do to make it better?” This gives the

» Or, “What could you do differently next time?” Then ask them to state that agreement. “OK, next time you will ask sister before you take a toy out of her room. Great plan. Let’s go tell her that and give her back the toy.”

Step 3) If the child won’t choose a way to make the situation better, then you choose an outcome for them. » “When you choose a solution, you get to keep playing, Otherwise, there will be a sad consequence.”

For example, if the child is not willing to give back the toy, then you leave the playdate, or if they won’t trade toys, the toy they stole goes away until tomorrow. Whatever outcome you choose, it will be most effective if it is something you have the power to enforce.

Over time, using these three steps should be a positive way to help the child to take ownership for their mistakes, in a solution-focused way.

Q.

How do I handle it when my child talks back or yells at me when they are mad or being defiant? This is such great question that I know many parents can relate to. Testing back-talk or yelling is very common. Sometimes it may be the child mirroring behaviors we are modeling (oops!), or it may be a moment where your child’s big emotions are overtaking their wise choices. First, it’s important to not add more fuel to the fire that’s already burning (we’ve all taken that road, only to see the situation crash and burn). Instead of answering their yell with another yell - may I suggest you… pause. Yes. Just. Pause… so you can stop your knee-jerk reaction of correction (or wanting to strangle them - like I sometimes feel). The best thing (that helps many parents) is taking one slow breath. Take a comfortable inhale through the nose and an exhale that is as slow as possible. It’s a quick tip from science that helps us rewire a hijacked system, into a physically more relaxed and focused self.

Planning local trips and beyond. Let me help craft your next experience.

Next, try something I call “Whoa, low and slow.” Put your arms in a “stop” motion, and decrease the pace and volume of your voice, in order to decrease the pace and volume of the child. “Whoah…let's…just…pause for a second… (take a breath in front of the child to model and they may take a breath with you).” If they seem open to it, offer a silent 30-second hug. This is all in alignment with the science we know from Dr. Dan Siegel and Dr. Bruce Perry about how your child’s brain can’t reason before they first regulate (calm down). Then slowly say, “I’d like to help solve this problem with you. I can’t help you when you are yelling.” If the child calms and is willing to talk, you can then guide them to tell you calmly what they are wanting or feeling: “I can help you best if you are talking in a voice I can hear.” If they continue to yell or use hurtful words, walk away or ask them to take some space in another room or area until they are able to talk calmly and with a voice you can hear.

Designed to save you time and money.

KULA

Keeping it Real ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY BLAIR FJESETH

When our 14-year-old lab’s health started declining this last summer, my husband and I talked about getting a puppy. The intent wasn’t to replace Kula but to allow time for him to teach the new pup how to love “his kids.” Dogs are funny that way. I could sense he was hanging on. For what? I don’t know. Perhaps it was to make sure we were being properly watched over. I say “properly” because, yes, we have another dog who can be best described as a cranky 11-yearold Frenchie who is more like a cross between a cat, bat and pigeon—and leave it at that. We weren’t actively looking, and we certainly didn’t want a winter puppy. The truth is, we thought we would have more time—a life lesson on its own.

And then, as with all adventures, there was a “but then” pivot point. My boss mentioned his neighbor had an accidental litter of half Newfie-half Irish Wolfhound puppies. Intrigued, we decided to go and look, and, well, we all know how that goes. The kids fell instantly in love, a puppy was reserved, and my husband and I both said, “Are we nuts for having three dogs?” Then, Kula passed. His departure came sooner than we thought it would, and with his passing came an immense sense of sadness and now... guilt. Do we back out? Do we even want or need a puppy now? Kula’s hair glitter still floats in our house, a constant reminder that he was just here. That can’t be right, can it? So, with still-heavy hearts, we picked up our little girl, and the spots where my sons’ tears had fallen over the last few weeks were now covered with puppy kisses.

FREYA

A smile and then a giggle from my sweet 6-year-old, his laughter breathing life back into the solemn void we had been entrenched in. Kula could never be replaced. He meant too much to all of us and was here for too many milestones. I like to think Kula lives on in our new girl. She is watching his kids now. All I can say is that my kids have learned to feel sadness and happiness in tandem. To love and mourn at once. To look ahead and to grieve what was. Hard lessons, but ones required for managing the unruly world we live in. Maybe it turns out that the timing was right, perhaps not in human time but in dog time.
