Yellowstone National Park Celebrates 150th Anniversary This year, Yellowstone is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its establishment as the first national park. While this is an exciting and monumental occasion, it is sure to swell visitor traffic even more than the usual summer tourist season does. Locals know that the best time to visit YNP is in the spring and fall when the crowds have dissipated some and the animals are much busier and more visible. So, it’s with residency on our side that we are blessed with that option. For those of you traveling through with plans to visit YNP this summer, Montana thanks you for visiting and exploring one of our most noteworthy state treasures. Three entrances to YNP are located in Montana: West Yellowstone, Gardiner and Cooke City. With the 150th anniversary this summer, please practice your best patience in the park. The traffic will be bad, and slow. But slow is good! If you are zipping through the park, you’ll have no idea what you missed. A bald eagle resting on the top of an Aspen. An Osprey fishing from the Yellowstone. A mother black bear and her cubs foraging in downed timber (they can blend in). The howl of a wolf. YNP visits should never be rushed, but savored. Plan to take a picnic lunch or a short hike. Leave yourself plenty of time to just sit back and take it all in. The sights, the sounds, the smells. I usually include one of my favorite one-day or multiple-day YNP tours for this annual issue of ours. I’m not going to do that this year. Instead, our Montana Parent community is sharing a few favorite images from park visits with our families over the years. Note: None of these moments could have been captured if we hadn't slowed down to take the picture. Yellowstone was inhabited by indigenous cultures long before it became our first national park. In that spirit, YNP continues to embrace and inspire art, music, literature, science and a conservation movement that has led to the creation other national parks worldwide. Bring a journal, drawing paper, your camera, your instruments, your questions and really VISIT the park. You never know, that bear jam that stops you in traffic for two hours may lead to the next great novel —or children’s book.

daytripping Summer Fun

BINGO

Have fun this summer by completing the activities BINGO-style and marking them off! If you take a picture, tag @montana_parent on Instagram and throughout the summer we will share our favorites!

What to pack

There’s a popular saying in Montana:

“If you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes.” And that’s the truth. It could be 90 degrees one minute, then drop 20 degrees with gale force winds and rain blowing sideways the next. When recreating in Montana you need to be prepared…for weather, wildlife and emergencies. First, dress in layers. The temperature may be 85 degrees, but in town it can feel like 100 degrees and on the summit of your hike more like 65 degrees. As already noted, the weather can change dramatically and rapidly. Second, don’t wear new shoes. Even Montanans have made this mistake and you don’t want blistered feet during your entire vacation. And PLEASE keep a safe distance from wildlife (no selfies with bears, etc). It's amazing every year how many people get dangerously close. Use the 16 summer 2022 pullouts when you want to stop. Drive safely.

Here is a solid list of standard daytrip items:

Ç A real map (cell service is Ç Raincoat spotty in the backcountry Ç Sweatshirt or light jacket and YNP) Ç Large water bottle (unless you Ç Cash (gas stations are few want to take a trip to the ER, don’t drink creek or river water)

Ç Lunch/snacks (plan not to find a hot meal for hours)

Ç A second pair of socks

(in case the first ones get wet)

Ç Band-Aids Ç Bear spray Ç Hat (sun and winter) Ç Bug spray Ç Sunscreen Ç Camera or smartphone Ç Binoculars Ç Allergy medicine Ç Ibuprofen

and far between in some places, and you'll find some only take cash)

Ç Tissues or toilet paper

(when you gotta go, you gotta go)

Ç Lip balm For serious day trippers/ hikers add the following:

Ç Flashlight or headlamp Ç Water shoes Ç Long pants Ç Gloves Ç Bathing suit (You might want to jump in a river)

Ç Matches and a fire starter

Hike

Like a Local

ARTICLE AND PHOTOS JESSICA CARTWRIGHT

If you live in Montana, getting outside is the reason for any season and, after the last couple of years, being immersed in the tranquility of nature is needed more than ever. We have a lot of new people in our Treasure State and, with summer and tourist season upon us, our trails are busier than ever. To be honest, a part of me resisted writing this article. It can be hard to see people come and disrespect the places and mountains you are devoted to. Before the pandemic, new growth in Bozeman felt respectable, because it seemed like everyone who was coming here just really, really wanted to be here. They were in alignment with the values of this town. During the pandemic, however, it felt in some ways like people moved here simply because they didn’t want to be where they were before. Crowded with people who don’t understand what makes living in Bozeman so special, at times it seemed as though our town was being taken advantage of. But I know that’s not most people, so this is my invitation to you—all are welcome here! And we can all reciprocate by:

Ç Loving these lands: Tread lightly, pick up dog poop, donate to Gallatin Valley Land Trust, help someone who looks lost, etc.

Ç Driving the speed limit: It’s really not necessary to pass people in canyons; and if you’re going slow, pull over to let people pass.

Ç Being kind: The service industry here is doing their best; we all are. Ç Feeling that amazing community vibe: Let it fuel you and inspire you, and continue to give back to it.

So, with those tips in mind, read on to learn good family trail practices to keep Bozeman the place we love and treat it like a local would, no matter how new you are to town. 18

Family-Friendly Trails and Tips for Getting Outside with Your Little One(s): MAKE IT FUN

Remember, as with any outdoor family activity, it’s all about finding the right balance between a bit of challenge mixed with a whole lot of fun. We want our kids to want to do the things we love, not dread them. That might mean turning around earlier than you normally would, stopping to look under rocks, offering plenty of snacks and, yes, learning to pee in the woods. Let go of expectations and consider any outing a win. Oh, and did I mention snacks? I like to keep my 6-year-old enthusiastic by playing games like counting how many different wildflowers we can find, looking for fairies, stopping to play in the creeks, singing songs and making a fun hiking stick to bring along. She also adores having her own hiking backpack, with her very own first-aid kit, water, snacks (and whatever else she deems essential that day).

KEEP IT SAFE

Pack a small first-aid kit (my ski and bike patrol husband would love to hear this because it’s not my MO). I honestly keep it pretty simple and go with Band-Aids, sunscreen, a whistle, a high energy snack, extra water and layers. It’s always a good idea to let people know where you’re going if it’s just you and your littles. Pack for all the weather options. Sun, wind, rain, hail. You don’t have to go overboard, but it’s worth it to bring a couple of optional layers, hats and a backup outfit for your kiddo in the car or pack (puddles happen).

ACT LIKE A LOCAL

Leave your trail/camp spot/anywhere you spend time in nature better than you found it. Pick up that piece of trash. Especially in our busier places like Hyalite that see high traffic. Partially because accidents happen, but also because some people don’t understand how precious these woods are and often disrespect it. (Hello eyeroll to the people I saw dump their trash behind the outhouse at the reservoir – and intense stare as I called them out for it, went and picked up their trash bag, and took it home to throw it out). Carpool and don’t take up more parking space than you need. Trailheads are busy. Let’s all try to carpool more, and leave room for others. Be kind, take it slow and easy. Smile and give a little wave to people when you’re on a back road, dirt road or gravel road.

Ready for some fun? Toddler-friendly trails, which are stroller accessible and perfect for toddler legs:

Ç Tuckerman Park – pretty much in town, with water spots and plenty of shade.

Ç Sourdough Canyon Trail – off-

leash, dog-friendly, featuring an easy in and out trail with a sweet little creek spot.

Ç Palisade Falls – This stunning

waterfall is well worth the drive up to Hyalite. Bring a picnic to eat by the creek in the parking area.

Family trails that won’t disappoint (harder terrain, excellent views):

Ç Grotto Falls – This is a gorgeous, accessible hike that is worth the drive up Hyalite with a slow and steady incline and options for an easier or harder path.

Ç Drinking Horse – There is a decent uphill here, so be prepared. But even if you don’t go all the way up, the views are gorgeous; choose the easier route for more shade.

Ç Crescent Lake – Also up Hyalite,

this one starts at the reservoir and wraps around, with views of a smaller lake and the much larger reservoir, it is fairly flat and such a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. Be sure to bring a picnic to eat somewhere along the way.

Also be sure to check out Fresh Air Mamas, a free hiking group hosted by Roots Family Collaborative that meets for family hiking adventures over the summer. It’s a great way to meet other families who hike, stay safe and enjoy being in good company. Bozeman is so special for a reason. So, let’s get outside to appreciate all this area has to offer, and do it in a way that can sustain us all for years to come. Happy hiking. Ghost Towns ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY ANDREA HILL

GILLIAN HALL AND FRATERNITY HALL - ELKHORN

HOTEL MEADE - BANNACK

MASONIC LODGE - BANNACK

Elkhorn

Bannack

These two historic buildings are the well-preserved remnants of the mining town, Elkhorn. Elkhorn fits the description of a ghost town perfectly. Driving into town, the historic equipment scattered throughout the scenery provides the allure of an authentic mining ghost town.

While many of the buildings have become so decayed you can’t enter, there are many you can still explore. My personal favorites are the Hotel Meade and the Masonic Lodge and School. Hotel Meade originally served as the Beaverhead County Courthouse until 1881. In 1891, Dr. John Singleton remodeled it into a hotel, which is the building you see today. For the believers out there, Hotel Meade is thought to be one of the most haunted places in Bannack. There are many stories of people’s ghostly experiences. In my experience, going upstairs leads you to a rather spooky hallway where shadows through the cracks of doorways make you wonder if the rooms are still occupied.

In the 1800s the mountains around southwest Montana lured many with the hope of striking it rich. You’ve probably heard of Virginia City and Nevada City, but tucked away in the Elkhorn Mountains on a gravel backcountry road you will come upon Gillian Hall and Fraternity Hall, which make up Montana’s smallest state park.

Both Gillian Hall and Fraternity Hall are open for exploration. Fraternity Hall was built in 1893 as Elkhorn’s social center. You can walk inside and imagine what it was like to attend a dance or take in a theatrical performance. You can even go to the second floor and walk around. The upstairs hosted such organizations as the Masons and Oddfellows. Gillian Hall served as a saloon, dance hall and store. You can only explore the first floor, as the outdoor staircase to the second floor was ruined long ago. Most of the town is privately owned, but you can still meander through the cemetery, which is located about a mile up the hill. The hike is simple and family friendly. In the cemetery, you can visit the tombstone of Swiss miner Peter Wys, who originally discovered the silver veins of the Elkhorn mountains in 1872. Tragically, the cemetery primarily contains the graves of children who perished during the 1888-1889 Diphtheria epidemic. Elkhorn is in southwest Montana and can be reached from Boulder off I-15. Go 7 miles south on Highway 69, left over a small bridge then right onto a gravel road for 13 miles, bearing left at each of two forks in the road.

If you prefer to explore a ghost town with more vigilante history and haunted tales, I recommend visiting Bannack. John White discovered gold on Grasshopper Creek in 1862 and gold miners rushed to stake their claim. Unlike Elkhorn with its two structures, Bannack has more than 50.

The Masonic Lodge and School were constructed in 1874. The Masonic Lodge was upstairs while the school was downstairs. Antique desks and Masonic paraphernalia remain. While said to be less haunted than the other buildings, there are stories of mysterious sounds. I personally didn’t hear any sounds, but I did catch some interesting anomalies in one of the photos I took. The best way to get to Bannack Ghost Town is via I-15. Exit west on Highway 278 south of Dillon.

Southwest Montana has a very rich mining history, and exploring Montana’s ghost towns gives you a glimpse of the wild west mixed in with the boom and bust of these once prosperous mining towns. This summer, I hope to make it to Garnet, which some call Montana’s best preserved ghost town. Here’s to a summer of adventuring in our beautiful state. Camping

with Eddie Griswold…or the Clampits ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY ALI SCHWEITZER

Camping was a part of my life growing up; I have so many fond memories of sleeping in the pop-up camper or roughing it in a tent next to the lake. So it only made sense that when I had kids, camping was going to be a summer past-time… and believe me, it has been.

RIN TIN TIN

Prior to kids, my husband and I loved to do more backcountry-style camping that required us to pack in and pack out, so the light two person tent we snuggled in on cold nights was a must. Enter kids and, on that first camping experience with a toddler and a dog in that tiny little tent, we knew it was not going to work for us anymore. We quickly realized that our camping life needed to change slightly and, with my husband’s growing fear of bear attacks (?), we decided we needed a camper. So, we set out to find an older camper we could buy in cash and enjoy for years to come. When I was pregnant with our second child, we found this great deal on a camper that we could gut and remodel to our liking… with a baby on the way, that was easier said than done. We got our 1984 Nomad camper gutted and then she sat on our yard, killing our grass for over a year. When we decided to sell her I even talked a buyer out of buying her because he had the same intentions of remodeling her with a new baby on the way…no way that was going to happen. But she went to a great home and when she was finally remodeled, the pictures the couple sent us were amazing. We used the money we made on that camper to buy a smaller, older, but already remodeled camper. Enter Rin Tin Tin, our 1969 Aristrocat low rider. She was a looker for sure, but she was small and could be pulled by our SUV and we didn’t have to worry about fixing her up…or so we thought.

SNOW WHITE!

Our first time out with her over a Labor Day weekend with friends was great, and we had a blast! Our son (then 5) only asked once why our camper was so much uglier and smaller than everyone else’s (LOL). After that first trip she was put on the side of our house until the next season. Rin Tin Tin did not fare well over the winter months and when we opened her up for our Memorial Day weekend trip, we were welcomed by a major leak and mold all over the back end of the camper. So that camping trip was spent in our friend’s camper, while we contemplated what to do with ours. We decided to fix her up, and my husband and I spent most of the summer arguing and getting frustrated with each other over the amount of time and work that went into fixing up Rin Tin Tin, but we did it. And while she didn’t look quite as good as she had before (not saying much), she stayed dry and—even though we always looked like Eddie Griswold or the Clampits pulling up to any camping spot—she was the perfect camper for our little family of four, until last summer. Our son (now 8) was tired of sharing a bed in the camper with his sister, and I was tired of not having a toilet for those late night “I gotta go scenarios.” So, we decided it was time to let Rin Tin Tin go and upgrade (just a little). The hunt was on and it didn’t take us too long to find the next best camper, this time a little bigger and a little newer. Enter Snow White, complete with bunk beds, a bathroom, a heater and air conditioner. (And no fear of turning on the stove and blowing up the camper either.) Well, with a bigger camper comes more responsibility and last summer was our summer of learning. Learning that if you don’t have full propane tanks, you won’t have heat; if you don’t put in the water plugs, you won’t have water; and, yes, one can still use the toilet if there’s no water, but cleaning it when it won’t flush is pretty gross. And then you have to winterize it…who knew? It’s a good thing we have such great friends and seasoned campers who were able to help us on the journey of owning a “real adult” camper. And now we embark on our second season of camping with Snow White, fingers crossed that we winterized her correctly and won’t have to do any more remodels. All in all, though, I wouldn’t change the past nine years of camping for anything. We’ve had great experiences and loads of fun, even with our janky Rin Tin Tin, and as we continue to camp, it will only get better! Dr. Ali is the owner and chiropractor at Active Family Chiropractic & Wellness. You’ll often see her and her family out on the trails, well adjusted and having fun. :: calendars, blog & more @ MTPARENT.COM ::

Find Food, Fun and Community at a

Farmers Market this Summer WRITTEN BY STEPHANIE LAPORTE POTTS

What better way to revel in the bounty of a Montana summer than with a trip to the farmers market? They are vibrant community hubs, and a great place to go stock up on delicious local food for the week. Taking place in towns large and small, these weekly events are an opportunity for the whole family to get outside, meet your farmers, try some new foods, reconnect with neighbors and maybe even enjoy some local music or art. Take the whole family for a fun, tasty, uniquely-local outdoor experience.

Farmers Markets Around Montana

Farmers markets are a great way to get to know a place. If you’re traveling in Montana this summer, make sure to check out the markets along the way. You can learn about the community, taste local specialties and keep the whole family engaged and exploring (see tips below.) There are a large number of farmers markets in Montana, with more being added each year. Abundant Montana is an online resource with information on where to find local food across Montana. Their list of markets across the state is available online at: www.abundantmontana.com/search/?type=farmers-market.

Kids at the Market

Farmers markets are a wonderful place to get the family outdoors, but the thought of bringing the whole gang out to the market may seem like a monumental task. Try some of these tips to keep kids of all ages engaged, learning and having fun.

Ç Let Kids Choose: Markets are a great opportunity for kids to

try new things, express creativity and interest, and even learn budgeting and math skills. Let kids know at the beginning of

24

summer 2022

your visit that everyone gets to choose a vegetable to purchase and bring home to try this week. You could also consider giving each child a budget or allowance, and letting them choose whatever they can within their budget. This gives kids an incentive to explore the market closely, and also helps them connect with their food and practice decision making. It also may encourage them (and you) to try something new that you, as the parent, might not have selected.

Ç Scavenger Hunt: Create a simple scavenger hunt for your

family while at the market. Lists of different foods work well, or even different colors or shapes for younger children. Get creative and add silly things and see if your kids can find some version of them—maybe there really is a fish riding a bicycle somewhere at the market.

Ç Meet a Farmer: Before the market, talk with your kids about

local producers and ask them if they have any questions they would like to ask a farmer. When you are there, support your kids in asking a farmer one of the questions they’ve prepared and see what you learn. (Most farmers at the market would love to answer your child’s questions!)

When you get home (or to your hotel, cabin or campsite), be sure to enjoy your farmers market bounty together. If you need some ideas for how to use all of those cherries or carrots that your kids picked out, Gallatin Valley Farm to School has recipes featuring local produce available at www.gvfarmtoschool.org/blog . Cheers to a tasty and bountiful Montana summer! Stephanie Laporte Potts is the Executive Director of Gallatin Valley Farm to School, a Bozeman-based nonprofit that connects kids and families to local food in the garden, cafeteria, classroom and community. She’s an amateur cook, avid naturalist, enthusiastic home gardener and proud (but tired) mother of an 8- month-old.

Hike Mindfully and Explore Bozeman Trails This Summer WRITTEN BY NELL GEHRKE

I remember plodding along next to my dad on the trails in the Minnesota River Valley and noticing that even on the gravel trail, my dad made remarkably little sound. I promptly tried to emulate the way he moved through the world, taking everything in without making a sound. These hikes with my dad inspired a love for conservation that would eventually land me at the Gallatin Valley Land Trust. Writing this piece has caused me to reflect on the times I spent in the woods with my parents, and how grateful I am for those experiences. I invite you to pause and think about a time in your early years when you were hiking with an adult. Keep those moments in mind as you take your little one out on the trails, and remember to tune into what your child enjoys. If they’re excited by seeing birds, take them to the Indreland Audubon Wetland Preserve. If your young one loves crushing miles, take them on a longer hike like Triple Tree or Kirk Hill. Drinking Horse is a great trail for a family walk. Folks with young children can enjoy a short hike to a beautiful bridge with benches to rest on and easy access to the river. If your kids are ready for a challenge, or you’re ready to carry them, head to the top for spectacular views of the Gallatin Valley. Story Mill Community Park, Glen Lake Rotary Park and Gallatin Regional Park are great options for folks in town. Each offers a flat trail with access to water. Story Mill Community Park boasts sculptures that are sure to inspire the imagination of young people. While you’re out, continue to set a good example for your little ones. Hike Kind by continuing to steward Gallatin Valley’s trails with an ethic of community care. Encourage

kids to join you in picking up litter. Go the extra mile and pick up the dog bag someone forgot at the side of the trail. Extend kindness to other trail users by greeting them. If you’re feeling bold, and packed extra clothes in the car, teach your kids to walk through puddles. Take the Hike Kind pledge as a family at www. outsidekind.org. There is also a great quiz to get your kids thinking about trail etiquette before hitting the trail. GVLT also has family-friendly volunteer events and activities. All ages are invited to join GVLT on June 4 at Peets Hill to volunteer for National Trails Day, a day when communities like ours gather all over the country to tackle trail maintenance projects. June 4 is also the beginning of the Summer Trails Challenge. Have your kids help set a family goal for the number of miles they want to hike during the challenge. Every mile they hike is $1 for trails and conservation in Gallatin Valley. Additionally, GVLT is once again hosting their Discovery Walk series in partnership with the City of Bozeman, Montana Outdoor Science School and City of Bozeman Parks and Recreation Department. This is a great way to get young people interested in all the wonders Gallatin Valley’s trails hold. When I first tried hiking silently like my dad, I wasn’t very good at it. I’ve come a long way since I was 12. The call of a sandhill crane or the sound of moving water serves as a reminder to come back to myself and to the trail. When this happens, I remember my dad and how he let his feet fall softly wherever he walked. Nell Gehrke is an AmeriCorps Service Member with Montana Conservation Corps.

Garnets and Gold C'mon Let's Find Treasure! ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY PATTI ALBRECHT

Children love toys...but most love digging in the dirt and splashing in water even more! Tell a child you're going to go find treasure and let the squeals of excitement begin. Garnets are a bright red gem found in the gravel along the shoreline at Ruby Reservoir, south of Alder. They are plentiful and big enough for even a toddler to find. Toss a shovel of gravel into a gold pan or pie plate, submerge in water, shake a few times, slowly let most water flow out, then quickly flip pan and contents upside down onto ground. The shaking in the water causes the heavy garnets to settle to the bottom so when flipped upside down the garnets will now be on top. Most will be the size of a BB or pea. Kids and adults alike will enjoy picking them out of the gravel. A leisurely way to find garnets is to walk slowly toward the sun with your eyes glued to the sandy gravel in front of you. If the sun is positioned correctly, cranberry glints of light will catch your eye…behold the garnet. Gold panning is another fun way to enjoy the outdoors AND maybe earn a little extra cash. Even if your kids are young, they will be able to do it. Gold is heavy, so even a 3-year-old will be able to find gold in his pan. A little research is required when deciding where to prospect for gold. Places where placer gold have been found in the past offer the best

26

summer 2022

chance of finding it today: gulches around Helena, Butte, Deer Lodge, Townsend, Norris and Emigrant. Supplies for a family outing should include: gold pans, a vial or pill bottle to put gold in, a shovel and 5-gallon bucket. The bucket is handy to haul dirt and great to use as a stool when panning. Narrow down the gulches of exploration to the ones that have a stream in which to pan. Reading how the water flows in the stream will help to determine the best place to dig. Where the water slows is where gold will be found. Good choices are: the inside bend of a stream, the downstream side of boulders, or where a narrow stretch widens out. Once you pick your spot, push aside rocks and dig down as far as you can or until you hit bedrock or a hard clay layer. Scoop some of this material into the pan, submerge it in water and shake the pan back and forth. There are countless different styles of panning but the basic idea is to agitate the sediment in the pan so the heavy gold will settle to the bottom. Then tilt the pan and move it so water washes in and washes out the lighter top portion. Repeat these steps until only black sand and, hopefully, gold is left. A fun way to practice and see how gold settles is to mix fishing weights, BB's or marbles into some dirt and then pan in a tub or pool in the backyard. Experiencing how easy it is to keep this fake gold in the gold pan will boost any panner's confidence. With gold being valuable, a family outing could make memories and a little cash. Patti Albrecht is the owner of Earth's Treasures Fossil & Mineral Museum Gallery in Downtown Bozeman.

Bear and Wolf Education Centers Mountain Bike Instruction for Adults

THE GRIZZLY & WOLF DISCOVERY CENTER

Maybe you haven’t been lucky enough to see a bear or wolf in the wild, or maybe you’ve tried hard not to. If either is the case, rest assured you can safely view these native animals at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone or Montana Grizzly Encounter just east of Bozeman. The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is an AZA-accredited, not-for-profit wildlife park and educational facility offering visitors the opportunity to experience the world of grizzly bears and gray wolves. Eight grizzly bears reside at the park, along with nine grey wolves that live in three different packs. A river otter exhibit is home to four male and two female North American River Otters. The Uinta Ground Squirrels are very amusing and entertaining to watch. Their enclosure is made up of an extensive network of underground burrows. Birdsof-prey, including hawks, eagles, owls, falcons and a turkey vulture, also call the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center home. Due to the ongoing highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak, precautionary measures have been taken to protect the animals, so the birds of prey are being kept inside and are NOT VIEWABLE at this time. If you are planning to spend time in West Yellowstone, visit www.grizzlydiscovery.org and check out the program schedule so you can plan your day: Admission is good for the whole day, so you can come and go as you please.

The Montana Grizzly Encounter is a grizzly bear rescue and education sanctuary, which provides a spacious, natural home for rescued grizzlies and a place for the public to learn about grizzlies as they watch them up close.

Options for Riders of All Levels • Private Lessons • Cornering Series • Intro to MTB Clinic • Fundamentals Clinic • Weekend Warrior Camp • Pump, Jump, Drop Series

Montana Grizzly Encounter is home to four bears. Visit grizzlyencounter.org and get to know these amazing animals and each of their incredible stories. If you are a fan of National Geographic’s Expedition Wild, you already know Montana Grizzly Encounter owner Casey Anderson.

Bozeman Montessori,

at Montana Science Center

a licensed early childhood center serving children from 6 months to 6 years old, is expanding to a second location this fall. After noticing the unmet need for quality care in the Gallatin Valley, co-owners Victoria Brailsford and Marissa SherKenney purchased a new facility in the Genesis Business Park in January. The 7,200 square foot building on Enterprise Boulevard will have preschool classrooms, toddler classrooms and one infant classroom. This facility is adjacent to a park with trails and ponds. Families can choose between the two campuses including the current location designed by SherKenney on Equestrian Lane in Baxter Meadows. The original location will continue serving toddlers and preschoolers while the new Enterprise Boulevard location will continue to serve our infant community along with the older ages. Tuition covers special classes like music, a cloth diapering service and a food program. “We’re proud of our unique food program that makes life a little simpler for our families, so the new building will have a spacious kitchen,” says Brailsford. “We also know that teachers need spaces to meet and we’re including wellness areas where staff can take an exercise break and renew themselves before stepping back into the classroom.” A community room is available for Parent-Child classes and meetings. As Bozeman Montessori enters their 10th year of operation, the school is now a STARS Level 4 in Montana’s rigorous voluntary quality rating and improvement system. Every lead teacher will hold an accredited Montessori teaching credential in the age group they serve. Bozeman Montessori’s mission is “Where the community comes together in support of children to cultivate joyfully engaged individuals at every stage of life.” Parents volunteer to organize monthly book clubs and participate in other special projects like gardening days. Benefits Youth Hockey Players August 12, 2022

The Bozeman Amateur Hockey Association is set to hold their annual golf tournament on Friday, August 12 at Bridger Creek Golf Course. Proceeds from this tournament will go directly to BAHA’s youth hockey scholarship fund. The fund was created to support the growth of hockey in the Gallatin Valley. Each year, a number of families apply for youth scholarships and most applicants receive some amount of financial support. The award amounts are determined by a committee, based on need. “Our mission statement is to provide ice sports for all user groups, and we want to be sure any child interested in hockey has the opportunity to play. Aside from it being the greatest sport in the world, it offers kids the chance to play in a competitive environment, learn lifelong skills and learn to play the sport of ice hockey,” says Hockey Director Dave Weaver. During the 2021/2022 season, 25 players’ fees were supplemented by more than $12,000 in scholarship awards. The fund is supported by the golf tournament, as well as the generosity of other ice community members.

Keeping it Real WRITTEN BY BLAIR FJESETH

We have a pack of neighborhood kids who roam from home to home, play games, create outdoor adventures, snack-hop and check out whoever has the latest toy or video game. The flock of seagulls, as I have deemed them, were in our yard recently playing some made-up ball game, when one of the kids came inside, plopped down at the kitchen counter and let out an audible "humph" to capture my attention. I looked up from the dishes and said, "What's going on, sweetie?"— a nickname I use with all the kids to protect myself from calling them the wrong name. She uttered a just-above-whisper level, "What made you put up your sign out front?" The sign she was referring to is an LGBTQ+ friendly flag overlaid with "You Are Loved" in bold lettering.

I paused and said, "We believe that people should be able to love who they want and marry who they want. We try to respect all people no matter who they are." "Do you know anyone who is gay?" she asked. "I do," I replied. "Lots of people, including my dad and my little brother." She cut in. "And a gay neighbor"... Did she just come out to me? I could see it in her face that she did. I put down the dishrag and looked her square in the eyes – eyes that questioned my reaction, curious about what I would say next. I wasn't sure what to say; that kind of information isn't surprising to me, nor is it something I think people should even have to do. We put a lot of pressure on LGBTQ+ people to declare who they are and, quite frankly, it shouldn't matter – you love who you love; that's it.

I was able to mutter something along the lines of, "Thank you for sharing that with me. You are loved no matter who you are and are always welcome in our home and family." Then came the tears. "I can't tell my mom. I've only told you and a few kids at school. My family doesn't like gay people." At this point, I wondered again what to say. I felt like her mother would not appreciate me knowing this information without her knowing. I also felt scared for her. I hugged her. I hugged her hard with the mom hug that’s intense enough to transfer a mother's strength to a child who needs it.

We had a long chat about the news, what's going on in other states to the LGTBQ+ community, the fear she had about that, the meanness of kids in school. But then she started beaming; she began to tell me about the girls she thought were beautiful, the feeling of sharing something she had been keeping in for so long.

Make their happily ever aſter come true...

Within minutes the flock of seagulls ventured back inside asking for Bagel Bites and Izzys. The conversation ended, and she resumed being her usual silly kid self. After they left that night, I felt so many things: sadness that we live in a place where kids feel afraid to be themselves, fortunate to be someone worthy of that trust, nervous about her journey and very aware that these kids are watching us regardless of how cool they think they are. They are taking cues from us, and we must find ways to help her and every child who feels different, weird, alone, sad or unsure of who they are and how they fit. New Column

Ask Flora

In the “Ask Flora” column, you can ask Flora McCormick, a Licensed Counselor and Parenting Coach, your parenting questions (about kids between ages 2 and 10) and read her advice here monthly.

WRITTEN BY FLORA MCCORMICK

Q.

“I want to empower my 9-year-old to be more independent and initiate chores/homework/ bedtime routine (without being asked) to help lessen my load and be a good example while I’m juggling younger siblings. I have tried to in the past and she just isn’t that motivated. She claims she forgets. She get distracted, playing.” - Kate

A.

There are two key things I think may help your daughter to be more helpful.

ONE

Set up self-motivating routines that can help do the prompting for you. They are most often phrased with a “When…Then…” or “As soon as…Then…” The more consistent these agreements are, the more self-motivating they are. So strive for something that can be fairly consistent every day.

For example: Ç Homework

“After school, as soon as your homework is done, then you can play with the neighbors.” “When you finish your homework, you can get on the iPad.”

Ç Bedtime

“I’m going to set a timer and if you have your bedtime jobs done before it goes off, you are welcome to use that time for playing. If you use the whole time to get yourself ready, that’s fine too.”

Ç Chores

“When your three weekend chores are done, then you can play with friends, get on your device, ride your bike.” Then, if you see your child playing without having their jobs done, you can simply say, “What was our agreement about that?”

TWO

Involve the child in the agreement. As you consider the options above, I recommend sitting down with your child outside of the challenging moment to say, “Bedtime/chores/homework have been a bit of a challenge recently. I know you don’t like me reminding and nagging, and I don’t like it either. What can we agree on so that you do what you need to do before you do what you want to do? Otherwise, I only have the option of taking away some of the time you get to do the things you want to do."

Q.

“One of the things we are struggling with is understanding that other people have needs. For example, my son wanted something from his dad. Dad was helping me with a medical thing, and he told our kiddo that he just needed a few minutes to help me. My son started shouting for dad and my husband got frustrated and yelled at him about understanding that I needed help and that his wants could wait.” - Melissa Delayed gratification is such an important social skill to teach our children. In 1972, Stanford University did a famous study where a group of kids were asked to make a simple choice: eat one marshmallow now, or wait 15 minutes and get two. "Some key findings in the study showed that using distraction strategies had a positive impact on how long the children managed to wait. ‘They made up quiet songs, hid their head in their arms, and so on.’” (https://nesslabs.com/marshmallow-test) And kids that were patient were also more likely to demonstrate self-control and higher executive functioning later in life. This showed that in order to be patient, kids need to have a strategy and have feedback that motivates that behavior in order to grow that social skill.

We can improve our child’s patience muscles by first teaching strategies to pass the time. Outside of any upset moment, talk to your child about the strategies that can help them wait. Secondly, provide consistent feedback loops that show that waiting leads to better results, and not waiting has sad results.

For example:

“I am helping mom right now. Please set a timer for yourself for 5 min. (or count to 100 or find a toy to play with, etc). When the time is up, I can help you. If you yell out for me again, before the time is up, I will not respond.” And then follow-through. Our children learn best from our actions, more than our words. If we say, “Fine. I’ll get the thing for you, but NEXT time, you need to be patient,” we undermine a valuable teachable moment.
