ONITSUKA TIGER COLLECTION AUTUMN-WINTER 2010

BRAND HISTORY The beginning of Onitsuka Tiger In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka founded Onitsuka Tiger, the forerunner of ASICS today. Back then Mr. Onitsuka believed that through sport he could help Japan recover from the devastation of the Second World War and re-inspire a new generation of youth to benefit the country’s future society. Mr. Onitsuka passionately believed that sport not only reinforced the physical health, it also taught young people to observe rules, discipline and manners. Sport encouraged them to do their best, to understand the importance of teamwork and to realize the importance of sportsmanship and regular training. Since Onitsuka Tiger began back in 1949, it has gone on to become an iconic, global ‘sports-fashion’ brand with a unique Japanese sports heritage. Today Onitsuka Tiger represents the forward-looking face of modern, metropolitan Japan. In addition to sneakers Onisuka Tiger also offers a collection of apparel and accessories all reflecting the innovative, original spirit of the Onitsuka Tiger brand.

APPAREL COLLECTION The first Onitsuka Tiger apparel collection was created in 1975, when the company’s founder, Mr. Onitsuka, was asked by the Japanese Olympic committee to supply the official clothing for the country’s team at the 1976 games. The Onitsuka Tiger brand was relaunched in Europe in 2001 with a footwear collection and an apparel collection followed a few seasons later. Onitsuka Tiger offers a collection for Directional, Fashion and Fashion/ Sport retail. Our Directional collection consists of apparel and accessories with the Sumi or Tsuri themes. The pieces combine edgy designs with high-quality materials and special finishes. Each item tells its own story. The Fashion collection mixes functionality with stylish design, creating useable, exciting products. The Fashion/Sport collection offers comfortable basics such as T-shirts, polos and sweaters. All items are inspired by sport and executed in the brand’s fresh, iconic colours. New to the collection are an old school style varsity jacket and cardigan.

SUMI COLLECTION The Sumi collection takes its inspiration from the monochrome colour palette and the age-old Japanese art form of calligraphy. Sumi refers to Japanese charcoal and black ink, which are represented in the collection by black, grey tones and subtle ink drop patterns. The Autumn/Winter 2010 collection focuses on menswear, with simple silhouettes and carefully constructed pieces. Instead of the brush stroke patterns used in the Spring/Summer range, ink drops decorate rich poplin and lightweight taffetas. Several garments feature contrasting Onitsuka Tiger stripes on the left sleeve for an eye-catching effect. For footwear, a subtle calligraphy graphic meaning “tiger is printed on the heel or the side of the shoes. And on the MEXICO 66, the Tiger stripes are represented by dot print pattern.

TSURI COLLECTION The Tsuri collection takes its inspiration from the traditional sport of fishing. While the Spring/Summer collection focused on sea fishing, the main feature of the Autumn/ Winter range is lake fishing in the mountains. The collection includes both men’s and women’s styles, with carefully constructed items and specially selected materials. Both apparel and footwear feature a multicolour chequer pattern based on the ‘Katsuo’ graphic used in the Spring/Summer collection. The pattern was inspired by the gradient stripe on the belly of a tuna fish. Apparel makes use of authentic winter fabrics: cotton flannel and waxed cotton combined with extraordinary design elements. Subtle details, such as pockets and clear cut lines, are also used to great effect. Lively colour combinations and a sense of fun are at the heart of this theme.
