To mark the 25th anniversary year of The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh presented the musical in a lavish, fully staged production in the sumptuous Victorian splendor of the Royal Albert Hall. Audiences were invited to join the celebration, which was broadcast to theatres around the world. Stars Ramin Karimloo as The Phantom and Sierra Boggess as Christine were joined by Barry James as Monsieur Firmin, Gareth Snook as Monsieur André, Liz Robertson as Madame Giry and Wynne Evans as Piangi, together with a cast and orchestra of more than 200 including special guest appearances. The Phantom of the Opera first opened in 1986 at Her Majesty’s Theatre and is based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra. The show has been seen in 145 cities in 27 countries, played to more than 130 million people and won more than 50 major theatre awards, including seven Tonys and three Olivier Awards in the West End. It is currently showing in London, New York, Budapest, Las Vegas, and Kyoto. In 2006, it became Broadway’s longest-running show ever.

Celebrate America Across Montana: Tim Janis w/State High School Choirs High school choirs from throughout Montana will perform with Tim Janis in this special program, created by Janis to spotlight our nation’s youth, and to pull communities together in an uplifting and inspiring celebration of music. The program was taped in November, 2011, at the KUSM-MontanaPBS studio in Bozeman. School buses brought hundreds of students from Montana high school music programs from communities including Anaconda, Belgrade, Big Timber, Billings, Corvallis, Florence, Frenchtown, Great Falls, Libby and Livingston to Bozeman. Arriving well-prepared and very professional, each choir came into the studio to record their performance. Tim Janis, familiar to public broadcasting audiences from programs such as An Enchanted Evening, Beautiful America, and Coastal America, is well known for his “Music with a Mission” philosophy, and has worked on many philanthropic projects.

THE CAT-IN-THE-HAT-A-THON 2-HOUR MARATHON

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That Voiced by award-winning actor Martin Short, Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat guides friends Sally and Nick——with a little help from the Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2——on fun-filled adventures where they make natural-science discoveries, from how bees make honey to why owls sleep during the day. Filled with both adventure and silliness, this series, based on the acclaimed The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library book series, will appeal to preschoolers’ natural curiosity, and engage them in the process of scientific exploration and discovery.

26   MONTANAPBS MARCH 2012

Around MontanaPBS Congratulations to the Phipps family! Reed Point 4H family wins national BizKid$ contest The Phipps family is putting Reed Point on the national map. Beaverhead Ranch crew was voted “America’s Favorite Family Business” on PBS’s BizKid$ television show.   An episode tabbed “All in the Family” is scheduled to air March 30th at

7:30pm on the MontanaPBS Kids channel. Though the show will feature the entire family, it’s 11-year-old Emma Phipps and her budding art business that was the centerpiece of the program. Not yet a teenager, Emma has already taken on the role of a teacher through classes to 4-Hers, for the Stillwater County Friends of the Library and a workshop in Billings when she was just 10 years old.   Emma is a BizKid$ fan and regular website-visitor, due to the games and educational resources available for home-schoolers, said her mother Lynn. Last August, Emma was looking into posting a video about her business on that website when she came across the “America’s Favorite Family” contest. One month after entering the contest, the Phipps were contacted by the show and informed they were one of five finalists.   When the BizKid$ website announced the winner, producers had this to say about the Phipps: “Beaverhead Ranch of Reed Point, Montana is an all-American working ranch! From organic cattle, hay, and grain, to lumber, baked goods and garden products, Beaverhead Ranch is a curator of the American art of agriculture. The entire Phipps family contributes to the success of this family business, from the artistic talents of 11-year-old Emily to the hay and grain production of 25 year-old Clarence and 22 year-old Anna. Together, this family has been providing Americans with food for their tables and lumber for their homes since 1908, overcoming obstacles along the way.”

Haiti: Where Did the Money Go? When a devastating 7.0 earthquake leveled Haiti in January 2010, the world responded. In America alone, half of all households donated a stunning $1.4 billion to a total of 23 major charities. But where exactly did all that money go?   Some say that what is happening there is nothing more than “disaster profiteering.” Others say relief organizations are just doing the best they can under very difficult circumstances. The fact is that more than a year after the earthquake, roughly 1.5 million Haitians remain homeless in squalid camps. Seventy percent of those camps have no latrines, and in the ones that do, thousands of people share a single toilet. Malnutrition is on the rise. The lack of potable water has caused a rise in infections. Cholera remains a constant threat, and about ninety-eight percent of the rubble remains un-cleared. With at least 10,000 known aid groups now operating in Haiti—the most per capita in the world—we asked a simple question: why are people still living like this?
