Market Warriors
From the producers of Antiques Roadshow, the hit PBS series and the forerunner of television’s popular antiques and collectibles genre, comes a new adventure for treasure seekers: Market Warriors. Follow antiques pickers—Bob, John, Kevin, and Miller— on a nationwide treasure hunt, scouring flea markets for antiques and vintage valuables with an eye toward selling their finds for profit at auction. Over the course of 20 one-hour episodes, viewers will get to know the pickers, enjoy an up-close look at the fierce competition in each episode and obstacles they face in the marketplace each week, and make their best guesses about who will come out ahead at the end of each episode. Fred Willard is the off-screen host, offering wry commentary throughout the show. As host, he show is filtered through his eyes. “With Market Warriors, we wanted to turn the lens on the antiques pickers themselves,” says series executive producer Marsha
Bemko. “Our pickers aren’t your amateur weekendflea-market hobbyists. They are pros looking to turn a profit in a highly competitive setting where the element of chance and a little luck sometimes trump expertise. And who better to guide viewers through the challenges our pickers face than Fred Willard, who brings to the series both his signature improvisational skills and the eye and know-how of a collector.” “Market Warriors is a perfect complement to Antiques Roadshow, building on our audience’s passion for history and antiques. Together they offer an addictive two hours of flea markets, antiques and unique finds,” said John F. Wilson, Senior Vice President & Chief TV Programming Executive.

4-H: Six Montana Stories When a person turns 100 years old, somebody needs to throw a party. That’s exactly what Montana PBS is doing this summer. And the guest of honor will be Montana 4-H. During the past 100 years, much about 4-H has changed. Thankfully, most hasn’t It’s still the state’s largest out-of-school program. One out of six school-age youth are members. And it’s still the best program to learn about livestock, cooking and sewing while making new friends at the same time. But over the years, new projects have been added. Some of the more popular are photography, robotics and film making. In fact, 4-H offers more than 200 different projects and learning experiences for young people. “I knew absolutely nothing about 4-H when I took this project on,” said Gus Chambers, writer, producer and director of 4-H: Six Montana Stories. “I thought it was just sows, cows and plows. A quaint slice of Americana that was rapidly disappearing from the cultural landscape. Like most things, I was completely wrong.” Chambers, along with the staff of the Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development in Bozeman selected six young people to profile. Participants include Garret Jolma, Winnett, Mont.; Mitch Ward, Denton, Mont.; Jordan Stoltz, Valier,

Mont.; Riley Reed, Harlowton, Mont.; Katie McCleary, Hardin, Mont.; and Beker Cuelho, Manhattan, Mont. They had different interests, projects, goals, backgrounds and geographies. The only common denominator was the fact that each participant was fairly typical of 4-H. “We weren’t looking for over-achievers,” said Chambers. “We wanted average kids that would grow and change over the course of their 4-H year.” Chambers and his camera followed each participant for an entire year capturing their ups and downs, their triumphs and losses and their daily routines. Endgame: Aids in Black America Thirty years after the discovery of the AIDS virus among gay white men, nearly half of the one million people in the United States infected with HIV are black men, women and children. This groundbreaking Frontline exploration of one of the country’s most urgent, preventable health crises traces the history of the epidemic through the experiences of extraordinary individuals who tell their stories: Nel, a 63-year old grandmother who married a deacon in her church and later found an HIV diagnosis tucked into his Bible; Tom and Keith, who call themselves “Bornies,” survivors who were born with the virus in the early 1990s; and Jovanté, a high school football player who didn’t realize what HIV meant until it was too late. From Magic Johnson to civil rights pioneer Julian Bond, from pastors to health workers, people on the front lines tell moving stories of the battle to contain the spread of the virus, and the opportunity to turn the tide of the epidemic. The director/producer/writer is Renata Simone, producer of the 2006 award-winning Frontline series “The Age of AIDS.”

The War: A Necessary War This seven-part documentary series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, explores the history and horror of the Second World War from an American perspective by following the fortunes of so-called ordinary men and women who become caught up in one of the greatest cataclysms in human history. Six years in the making, this epic 15-hour film focuses on the stories of citizens from four geographically distributed American towns—Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minnesota. These four communities stand in for—and could represent—any town in the United States that went through the war’s four devastating years. Individuals from each community take the viewer through their own personal and quite often harrowing journeys into war, painting vivid portraits of how the war dramatically altered their lives and those of their neighbors, as well as the country they helped to save for generations to come.

Capitol Fourth Celebrate America’s birthday with the country’s favorite Independence Day tradition. Tom Bergeron takes the helm as the new host of the star-spangled affair, which features an inspiring Olympic tribute to Team USA and performances by Megan Hilty, Javier Colon, Kool & the Gang, Kelli O’Hara and the National Symphony Orchestra, topped off by a great fireworks display. This program airs from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol before a concert audience of hundreds of thousands, millions more at home, on National Public Radio and to our troops around the world on the American Forces Network.
Thousands gather on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol for Capitol Fourth.
