G R E AT PE R FO R MAN CE S

Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert 2012 Distinguished conductor Gustavo Dudamel leads the fourth annual Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert 2012 concert. This year’s theme revolves around “Dances & Waves,” as exemplified by the works of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Alexander Borodin, Claude Debussy, Richard Strauss, Amilcare Ponchielli, Gerónimo Giménez and Johann Strauss II. The outdoor concert under the stars in the magnificent baroque gardens of Imperial Schönbrunn Palace is free to thousands of attendees in Vienna, and serves the orchestra’s objective of making classical music accessible to a broad spectrum of concertgoers beyond its usual, core audience. Dancers of the Vienna State Opera Ballet join the orchestra for the celebration. Gustavo Dudamel was born in Venezuela in 1981. His career has been meteoric, and at the tender age of 31, he conducts and has conducted the world’s most prestigious orchestras. He spearheads a most unusual project in his native country which, through classical music, brings together children and young people from all social backgrounds. Since 2009 he has also been musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Combining the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Venezuelan Simon Bolivar Orchestra, he recently established a record, performing Gustav Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, “Symphony of a Thousand.”

The War This seven-part documentary series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, explores the history and horror of the Second World War from an American perspective by following the fortunes of so-called ordinary men and women who become caught up in one of the greatest cataclysms in human history. Six years in the making, this epic 15-hour film focuses on the stories of citizens from four geographically distributed American towns—Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minnesota. These four communities stand in for—and could represent— any town in the United States that went through the war’s four devastating years.

3 Miles an Hour

According to Arnold “Smoke” Elser, three miles an hour, the speed of a horse, is the best way to see and savor a life welllived. The retired backcountry outfitter’s vision of wilderness has always included people. This MontanaPBS documentary takes viewers into the Bob Marshall Wilderness to share Elser’s history, passion and connection to the outdoors.

In 1955 Elser made his first trip out West. The young man from Ohio took his love of the outdoors and turned it into a career. After arriving in Montana, the previous generation’s outfitters, Tom Edwards and Howard Copenhaver, taught him the art of packing and how to work with horses and mules. More than just practical skills, they taught him a wilderness ethic. After 50 years in the business, Elser has led more than 700 trips and guided thousands of guests through the Bob Marshall Wilderness in western Montana. Now in his late 70s, Elser is making fewer trips into the Bob, so it’s time to share some of his experiences and the history he learned in the backcountry. Elser was among the first outfitters to adopt new regulations that lessened the impact of large pack trains and unlimited guests. He also was a quiet champion of the Great Bear Wilderness designation, agreeing in 1969 to take Missoulian reporter Dale Burk on as a crew member so Burk could observe Forest Service activity that seemed to undermine eventual designation of a wilderness area.

This 12-hour, six-part documentary series directed by Burns and co-produced with his longtime colleague, Dayton Duncan, who also wrote the script, is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. As such, it follows in the tradition of Burns’s exploration of other American inventions, such as baseball and jazz.

Outbreak: Anatomy of a Plaugue Patient Zero is a flight attendant, stricken with what she thinks is chicken pox. She lands in Montreal and goes to a hotel room to recover. A few weeks later she is back on the job——unaware of her role in an impending public health catastrophe. This program juxtaposes this fictional, modern-day scenario with the 1885 Montreal smallpox epidemic during which 20,000 people were infected and 3,000 died. Based on Michael Bliss’ gripping book, it reveals the alarming reality that, more than a century later, our modern world may not be ready for the next deadly outbreak.

Sid the Science Kid

Susie takes Sid and his friends to pick fresh vegetables from a community garden!

G et Up & M ove Wee k During the week of August 6, Sid the Science Kid episodes will ancourage movement and fitness with the following episodes.

Slide to the Side Airs 10am Monday, August 6 Sid is trying out his new dance called “The Sid Slide to the Side!” On his room’s hardwood floor, he boogies to the left, jumps to the right and then tries to slide to the side. But in his new sneakers, he can’t slide…he just squeaks to a stop! Sid and his friends investigate how different materials and surfaces can create friction, causing something to slow down.

Sid’s Super Kick Airs 10am Tuesday, August 7 In his backyard, Sid is pretending to be “Super Sid!” To show his super strength, he kicks a soccer ball really hard and it sails across the yard. But when he tries to kick it to a nearby tree with the same might, the ball once again sails really far. On a special trip to the Science Center, Sid and his friends investigate how using lots of force makes something move really far and fast, just like kicking a soccer ball.

Get Up & Move Airs 10am Wednesay, August 8

Sid’s teacher Susie announced that today is full of healthy surprises! First the class walks to a local park where they get to run around and play outside in the fresh air. Susie teaches the kids how to do yoga, and when it’s snack time, the kids get another special surprisethey get to pick fresh vegetables from a community garden. Next, Susie teaches the kids her favorite childhood game-Red Light, Green Light. Back home, Sid tells his Mom about his amazing day, and Mom is inspired to plant a garden in the backyard. Sid then comes up with a new family tradition-taking a walk every day together.

Sid’s Amazing Lungs Airs 10am Thursday, August 9 Sid races around his room and finds himself breathing really fast. Sid then wonders where all the air is going in his body when he breathes in? At school, Sid and his friends discover that our bodies have lungs to help us breathe in oxygen.

Must See TV Airs 10am Friday, August 10 Sid decides to sit and watch television all weekend long. There’s just one problem with his plan: sitting around and not moving would make his body feel terrible. At school Sid and his friends learn that exercising is a really fun way to stay healthy——and it makes your body feel great! Find more children’s programming on the PBSKids Channel.
