Death and the Civil War Drawing heavily on This Republic of Suffering, historian and Harvard president Drew Gilpin Faust’s acclaimed book, “Death and the Civil War” explores a critical but largely overlooked aspect of the Civil War experience: the immense and varied implications of the war’s staggering and unprecedented death toll. The war created a veritable “republic of suffering,” as landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted described the wounded and dying arriving at Union hospital ships on the Virginia Peninsula. The shattering Civil War death toll transformed hundreds of thousands of individual lives and the life of the nation as well, from its understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship to the profound struggle of a deeply religious culture to reconciling these events with a belief in a benevolent God. The film examines the increasingly lethal years of the war, focusing primarily on several key battles and their corpse-strewn aftermaths, and concludes with a section on the postwar efforts toward reburial and remembrance. The program premieres in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Antietam, the bloodiest one-day battle in American history.

imagine what was more memorable in Glacier Park a century ago: the breath taking scenery, or the adventure. Travel in time with us as we follow the adventures of our counterparts 100 years ago through rare, restored old film, museum pictures, and historical memorabilia. See how eastern city slickers were lured to North central Montana by a glitzy promotional campaign promoted by the Great Northern Railroad. Fort Peck Dam  In a 1934 speech at Fort Peck Montana, FDR unveiled his plan to build the world’s largest earthen dam, creating thousands of jobs at a time when the country was still reeling from the Great Depression. Gus Chambers, along with the staff of the Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development in Bozeman selected six young people to profile. Participants include Garret Jolma, Winnett, Mont.; Mitch Ward, Denton, Mont.; Jordan Stoltz, Valier, Mont.; Riley Reed, Harlowton, Mont.; Katie McCleary, Hardin, Mont.; and Beker Cuelho, Manhattan, Mont. They had different interests, projects, goals, backgrounds and geographies. The only common denominator was the fact that each participant was fairly typical of 4-H. “We weren’t looking for over-achievers,” said Chambers. “We wanted average kids that would grow and change over the course of their 4-H year.” Join host William Marcus and 4-H producer Gus Chambers for a special, live 2-hour encore broadcast of 4-H on September 16 at 6:30pm. Special guests may include some of the kids from the 4-H show, and special home movies shot by the kids themselves during the production. So mark your calendars and don’t miss this special night.

PBS is bound for Broadway with a primetime documentary series that tracks the real-life stories of America’s top high school musical performers, vying in the ultimate competition to find the nation’s best young theater stars. Part competition, part performance and part non-fiction drama, the event starts in regional theatrical programs, where judges around the country select the best performers in the country. The 60 finalists then descend on Broadway, where they plunge into the eye of the theatrical storm for one intense week of rehearsals, coaching, mentoring and cut-throat competition. After an intense final audition, finalists are selected, and these “best of the best” American high school performers take part in the grand finale of the week, the competition for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (a.k.a. The Jimmy Awards), a one night, star-studded event held at Minskoff Theatre in June 2012. That night, the judges select and anoint the nation’s leading male and female high school musical theatre performers.

Call the Midwife This moving, intimate, funny and trueto-life series, based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth, tells colorful stories of midwifery and families in London’s East End in the 1950s. Jenny Lee, a young woman raised in the wealthy English countryside, has chosen to become a nurse and now, as a newly qualified midwife, has gone to work in the poorest area of the city. Attached to an order of nursing nuns at Nonnatus House, Jenny is part of a team of women who minister to expectant mothers, many of whom give birth at home in appalling conditions. The drama follows Jenny as she meets her patients and learns to love the people who live in the East End.

Premiers Airs 10am Weekdays

Daniel Tiger’s Neigborhood

A new generation of preschool “neighbors” will get to experience the Neighborhood of Make-Believe when Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood premieres this month. The first TV series inspired by the iconic, award-winning Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood from The Fred Rogers Company stars 4-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original program’s Daniel Striped Tiger, who invites young viewers into his world, giving them a kid’s-eye view of his life. As they closely follow and share Daniel’s everyday adventures, preschoolers ages 2-4 and their families learn fun and practical strategies and skills necessary for growing and learning. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood premieres Monday, September 3, on PBS KIDS with a special one-hour block of two back-to-back episodes. The series will air daily following its Labor Day premiere. “No one knew better than Fred Rogers how to connect with children,” said Bill Isler, president of The Fred Rogers Company. “And, like Fred, Daniel Tiger will visit preschoolers every day. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is an exciting new series with all the right elements to appeal to today’s children and families. It’s well-poised to become a much-loved classic for years to come.”

Parental Guidelines tv–y All children tv–y7 Children age 7 and over tv–g General audience tv–pg Parental guidance suggested: –v     violence –s     some sexual situations –l     infrequent coarse language –d     suggestive sexual dialogue tv–14 Parents strongly cautioned tv-ma Mature audience only

Recent research proves what Fred Rogers knew all along: social and emotional competencies are the building blocks of doing well in school and in life. To help boost these invaluable skills among preschoolers, each episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood consists of two engaging stories that center on a common early learning theme such as dealing with disappointment. One of the key ingredients that sets the new series apart is its groundbreaking use of catchy, musical strategies that reinforce each theme and that preschoolers and parents will both sing——and use!——together in their daily lives. Every story includes an “imagination moment” in which Daniel plays out a preschool fantasy set to music. Then, the day’s strategy is reprised in a full song at the end. Daniel Tiger talks directly to viewers, warmly drawing them in and making them feel like one of his neighbors. The series’ stories are based on extensive input from a wide range of early learning specialists, formative research with children and the benefit of more than 40 years of the work of Fred Rogers. It all adds up to a powerful tool for parents: an entertaining and thoughtful guide for today’s families that integrates music, interactivity and a research-based curriculum.
