First Freedom: The Fight for Religious Freedom This 90-minute documentary examines how the most basic of human freedoms — freedom of conscience — was codified for the first time in human history by America’s Founding Fathers as an inalienable human right protected by law, instigating a landmark and lasting shift in human history. This film uses stunning re-enactments, the Founding Fathers’ own words, and the incisive commentary of key experts to profile the lives and times of the colonial Americans who raised the ideal of religious freedom to the level of a fundamental human right. First Freedom examines these provocative and historically significant issues by exploring the religious history leading up to the era of the American Revolution, key debates on the intersection of religion and governance, and the Founding Fathers’ personal beliefs about religion. The film details the progression of religious liberty from Pilgrims and Puritans to the creation of the Bill of Rights and how it shaped a new nation, guaranteeing religious freedom for its citizens and establishing a free marketplace for religion in the United States. A government without the interlocking authority of religion was utterly unprecedented in Western history and within a generation of its creation, it produced a vibrant religious culture still unmatched anywhere in the world. Explores with scholars, historians and writers the contemporary tests of religious freedom, current interpretations, and the lasting legacy of the Constitutional guarantees.

Butte, America Grounded in the dramatic personal stories of five generations of mining families, and narrated by Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, this program tells the tale of Butte, Montana, once the world’s largest producer of copper -- the “Richest Hill on Earth,” the town that “plumbed and electrified America,” the Pittsburgh of the West. Butte forged a community whose toughness, vitality and solidarity speak to what’s missing in America today, while raising profound questions about the costs and consequences of industrialization and use of natural resources. “Butte, America” is an unsentimental and moving tribute to working class life and to the never-ending labor of achieving fairness in a world where powerful, destructive forces are always at play. Airs Tuesday 12/4 at 9pm, repeats Thursday 12/6 at 12am

Archival material, photographs, re-creations and gripping on-camera interviews with survivors, witnesses, family members journalists and biologists, provide a complete account of those events. Airs Monday 12/3 at 9:28pm, repeats Friday 12/7 at 1:30am

Christmas on the Trail Christmas on the Trail was initially written and produced as a stage performance, celebrating the true meaning of Christmas, and all of the traditions generations have held dear, from the vantage point of the American Cowboy. After six years of performances, delighting tens of thousands of fans, the decision was made in late 2008 that it was time to stop just singing about cowboys, trails, horses, campfires, and Christmas out on the range, and actually head out to a ranch, with cowboys, trails, horses, campfires, and a Christmas celebration out on the range. The result recreated what has become a beloved Christmas show to countless families, featuring rock-solid performances from some of the finest musicians and cowboy poets anywhere, and also captured additional footage, shot over a period of four months, which would take the viewer to a different place in time, and actually tell the story conveyed in the lyrics and poems. This program has the right balance of traditional Christmas classics, both popular and sacred, and the unique lyrics and harmonies, as well as poems, which capture the romance and iconic imagery of the American Cowboy. The ultimate goal was simply to allow families across the country to come together each Christmas, and for a couple of hours be transported to sit around this Yuletide campfire, framed by longhorns, horses, and an authentic 1800s chuckwagon, and join us, as we look at this most treasured of all American holidays, through the eyes of one of her most revered and honored American heroes——the cowboy.

Building the Great Cathedrals Carved from a hundred million pounds of stone, soaring effortlessly atop a spider web of masonry, Gothic cathedrals are marvels of human achievement and artistry. But how did medieval builders reach such spectacular heights? Consuming the labor of entire towns, sometimes taking a hundred years to build, these architectural marvels were crafted from just hand tools and stone. Many now teeter on the brink of catastrophic collapse. To save them, an international team of engineers, architects, art historians and computer scientists searches the naves, bays and bell-towers for clues to how the dream of these heavenly temples on earth came true. NOVA’s teams perform hands-on experiments to investigate and reveal the architectural secrets that the cathedral builders used to erect their soaring, glass-filled walls. On this dazzling journey, inside the jewels of Gothic architecture, the filmmakers of the award-winning NOVA documentary “Secrets of the Parthenon” reveal the hidden formulas, drawn from the pages of the Bible itself, that drove medieval builders ever upward.

One Singular Sensation: Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch Before the ball drops and the Champagne corks are popped, the New York Philharmonic will spend its New Year’s Eve celebrating the music of Marvin Hamlisch with an all-star lineup of talent. The Philharmonic said that its New Year’s Eve concert, held annually at Lincoln Center, was scheduled this year to be hosted and conducted by Hamlisch, the composer of “A Chorus Line” and pop hits like “The Way We Were.” Following Hamlisch’s death on Aug. 6, this concert will now be a salute to his work as performed by artists he knew and worked with closely, including Audra McDonald, Kelli O’Hara, Josh Groban, Michael Feinstein, Raúl Esparza, Megan Hilty, Joshua Bell, Maria Friedman and Frederica von Stade. The concert, which will emphasize Hamlisch’s film and stage work like “A Chorus Line” and “Sweet Smell of Success,” will be conducted by Paul Gemignani and directed by Lonny Price. It will be hosted by Ms. McDonald and broadcast on “Live From Lincoln Center” on PBS.

The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About Christmas! Set to be a new holiday family tradition, this adventure follows the Cat, Nick and Sally on a journey around the world to help a lost reindeer find his way home in time for Christmas. This new holiday special will take kids and their parents on a learning adventure, showcasing different types of animals and the incredible abilities they have. Follow the Cat as he helps families discover natural science concepts while laughing and singing with them along the way. Sure to be a holiday favorite for the entire family for years to come, this adventure finds the Cat in the Hat, Nick and Sally on a journey around the world to help a lost reindeer find his way home to Freezeyourknees Snowland in time for Christmas. On the way, the Thinga-ma-jigger breaks down, and they depend on a variety of animals – from African bush elephants to bottlenose dolphins to red crabs – and their remarkable abilities to help them make an amazing journey home.
