Doomsday Volcanoes The eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010 turned much of the northern hemisphere into an ash-strewn no-fly zone. But Eyjafjallajökull was just the start. Katla, an Icelandic volcano 10 times bigger, has begun to swell and grumble. Two more giants, Hekla and Laki, could erupt without warning. Iceland is a ticking time bomb: When it blows, the consequences will be global. Meet scientists trying to understand those consequences — for air travel and for the global food supply and Earth’s climate. Could we be plunged into years of cold and famine? What can we do to prepare for the coming disaster?

Airs 9pm Wednesday, January 2 Also airs 1/4 2am, 5am

Life on Fire: Icelandic Volcanoes Volcanoes are among the most spectacular and powerful forces on our planet. They create new land, change landscapes and destroy civilizations, but more than two billion years ago, they also breathed life into our world. From the ocean abyss to snow-covered summits, this ambitious series paints a detailed picture of the struggles and amazing intimacy required to survive around volcanoes. Spectacular scenery provides the backdrop for the extraordinary animals and plants that have learned to juggle with fire. Fragile and engaging, these creatures teach us lessons in survival in a world as fascinating as it is dangerous.

Vividly bringing to life the epic struggles of the men and women who fought to end slavery, This series tells the intertwined stories of Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimké, Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Brown. Fighting body and soul, they led the most important civil rights crusade in American history. What began as a pacifist movement became a fiery and furious struggle that forever changed the nation. Black and white, Northerners and Southerners, poor and wealthy, these passionate antislavery activists tore the nation apart in order to form a more perfect union. The series, which tells the story largely through period drama narrative, airs 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect in January 1863. 8pm Tuesday, January 8 and 1/10 1am, 4am, 1/15 2am

Flora Thompson’s charming love letter to a vanished corner of rural England is brought to life in this warm-hearted adaptation. Set in the Oxfordshire countryside in the 1880s, this rich, funny and emotional series follows the relationship of two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, the small hamlet gently holding on to the past, and Candleford, the small market town bustling into the future. Seen through the eyes of young Laura, their inhabitants endure many upheavals and struggles as the inexorably change comes; their stories by turns poignant, spirited and uplifting. And Laura herself must face great change. Taking a job in Post Office in Candleford, run by the mercurial Dorcas, she turns her back on her childhood hamlet to make her way in the world. With her loyalties divided, she must choose her own path to womanhood.

Attenborough’s Life Stories David Attenborough’s Life Stories is a series of monologues written and spoken by British broadcaster David Attenborough on the subject of natural history. They were broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2009 as part of the station’s “Point of View” strand, in the weekly timeslot formerly occupied by Alistair Cooke’s Letter from America. In each of the 20 programmes, Attenborough discusses a particular subject of personal resonance, drawing on his experience of six decades filming the natural world. The series was produced by Julian Hector, head of radio at the BBC Natural History Unit.

American Experience: Henry Ford Airs 8pm Tuesday, January 29 Repeats 1/31 1am, 4am ·  This program paints a fascinating portrait of a farm boy who rose from obscurity to become the most influential American innovator of the 20th century. Ford’s Model T automobile and his five-dollar-a-day wage ushered in the modern world, earning Ford reverence from millions of Americans. Yet many of the changes he wrought deeply troubled the carmaker. In frustration, he lashed out at enemies, real and imagined.

One-hour special Airs 4:30pm Monday, January 21

Wild Kratts: Lost at Sea Join the adventures of Martin and Chris as they meet up with cool creatures from around the world and witness many never-before-seen wildlife moments. With their creature smarts plus their newly invented Creature Power Suits, the brothers Kratt are using amazing animal abilities to rescue their animal friends when they get into trouble. Each episode is a wildly funny adventure that also features how animals use science in their natural lives. Episodes include...

language of one of the smartest creatures on earth - dolphins! With the help of Aviva’s experimental dolphin decoder and two young dolphin tutors, Chris and Martin join a pod and try to speak “dolphinese”. But when their newfound friends get caught in a jam with the dolphins’ only true creature enemy--a hungry shark--the bros get embroiled in a hairraising rescue mission that tests their new creature language skills.

Blowfish Blowout  When the miniaturized Kratt bros get swept up and lost in a swath of plankton, they become part of a crowd of fish larva all headed to the most populated and diverse habitat on earth - the coral reef. As Aviva and the gang searches for them, the lost bros take up residence on the reef alongside a newfound porcupinefish friend, who will hopefully show them how to survive in this fish-eat-fish world until they are rescued. But when donita shows up searching for a special sea crown fit for a fashion queen, the gang must return the favor and rescue their friend.
