Columbia Gardens in Butte
Grounded in the dramatic personal stories of five generations of mining families, and narrated by Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, this program tells the tale of Butte, Montana, once the world’s largest producer of copper — the “Richest Hill on Earth,” the town that “plumbed and electrified America,” the Pittsburgh of the West. Butte forged a community whose toughness, vitality and solidarity speak to what’s missing in America today, while raising profound questions about the costs and consequences of industrialization and use of natural resources. Butte, America is an unsentimental and moving tribute to working class life and to the never-ending labor of achieving fairness in a world where powerful, destructive forces are always at play.

Celebrate America Across Montana: Tim Janis with Montana High School Choirs High school choirs from throughout Montana perform with Tim Janis in this special created to spotlight our nation’s youth, and to pull communities together in an uplifting and inspiring celebration of music. The program was taped in January 2013, at the KUSM-MontanaPBS studio in Bozeman. School buses brought hundreds of students from Montana high school music programs including Belgrade, Big Timber, Billings, Polson, Missoula, Stevensville, Livingston, Hamilton, and Bozeman. Arriving well-prepared and very professional, each choir came into the studio to record their performance. Tim Janis, familiar to public broadcasting audiences from programs such as An Enchanted Evening, Beautiful America, and Coastal America, is well known for his “Music with a Mission” philosophy, and has worked on many philanthropic projects.

For 37 years, they succeeded in ignoring the reality of their plight, creating a unique blend of music, comedy, thoughtfulness and catastrophe, until finally it dawned on them that people were laughing at them, and they quit—although some delusional fans hope the MLBC is not gone forever but only in remission. This recording is of their final concert, in Helena Montana. The Montana Logging and Ballet Company began in the mid 1970s as a typical neighborhood logging and ballet company. But soon they became what the Christian Science Monitor called “not your ordinary logging and ballet company.” Where did they go wrong? All over the country they forged a place for themselves in the world. Show after show they offered heart-warming political satire, and tender side-splitting harmonies. In the confusion, audiences tried to drown them out with whatever noise they could make. Mistaking it for applause, the group kept on, proving that in the face of serious world problems, hope and love are steadfast, but giddy silliness is downright infectious.

Escape from Iran: The Hollywood Option The 2012 film Argo, nominated for seven Academy Awards, was a thrilling dramatization directed by Ben Affleck. This program, Escape from Iran: The Hollywood Option, reveals the true events that inspired Argo. On November 4, 1979, militant students seized the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran. Sixty-six Americans were taken prisoner, but in the midst of the chaos, six American embassy workers eluded the students. Temporarily free, they quickly found themselves stranded in a hostile country gripped by revolutionary fervor. The desperate Americans took refuge in the home of Ken Taylor, Canada’s Ambassador to Iran and Taylor quickly found himself, his staff, and his family swept into a realm of political maneuverings and international intrigue, forged passports and secret agents. Aided by the Canadian government at the highest levels, CIA agent Antonio Mendez formulated a plan to exfiltrate the six American Embassy staff members from the country. He created a phony film production company called Studio Six and disguised the six houseguests as Hollywood executives in an effort to smuggle them out of Iran in plain sight.

Billing Montanans: 2 Family Tax Stories Every election year politicians love to talk about taxes, but how much do we really know about where our Montana tax dollars go? Would better information help the conversation? This program follows two Montana families and their tax dollars. The first family in Great Falls tracks their property tax dollars. The second family in Missoula follows their state income tax money. The families learn fascinating results about where their taxes go. These citizens also raise the idea of better ways local and state government can inform taxpayers. By the end of the program we’ll see how one Montana county government is already making changes to get clearer tax information to their citizens.

Sid the Science Kid: The Movie In this 90-minute adventure, Sid and Gabriela win a contest and get an exclusive tour of a brand new super modern science museum before it opens to the public. At the museum, the pair meets contest winners from China, and together they encounter a mysteriously quirky scientist, voiced by Christopher Lloyd, who designed robot museum tour guides. When one of the robots goes haywire, it zooms around the museum, reprogramming all the exhibits, causing madcap havoc and comical chaos. With the entire place turned upside down, the grand opening of the new museum is in danger of being canceled forever. Now it’s up to Sid and his new friends to work together, find the rogue robot and save the day.

Mr. Selfridge Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) stars as a wheeling-dealing American who shows early 1900s Londoners how to shop. Based on the life of colorful retail magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge, the new eight-part series is created by Emmy Award-winning writer Andrew Davies (“Pride and Prejudice,” “Bleak House”). Also starring are Frances O’Connor (“Madame Bovary”), Aisling Loftus (“Page Eight”), Zoe Tapper (“Zen”), Amanda Abbington (“Case Histories”), and Samuel West (“Any Human Heart”). Who knew shopping could be like this!
