Entering the world of a gun show may seem like making a trip to a foreign land. But for many Montanans, guns are a way of life, a tool necessary for the rural lifestyle. “Montana’s Gun Culture” explores the many ways Montanans use guns and their relationships with firearms.   From ranchers who use guns to manage their livestock to survivors of a 1986 Montana school shooting, this program explores the role of guns in Montana’s culture. In Montana, women in isolated, rural areas carry weapons to protect their families and 12-year-olds learn gun safety and hunt for food. But there’s also a dark side to the gun culture. Crimes, violence and even school shootings in our state are also examined. This documentary is the most recent edition of a 26-year long tradition of films produced by the students of The University of Montana School of Journalism.

Legendary White Stallions

Hear the story of the world-famous Lipizzaner stallions, from their origins in ancient times to the almost unknown drama of their rescue in 1945. The film, which focuses on the bond that develops between horse and rider, begins at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Here the perfect harmony between horse and rider, as well as the beauty and power of the magnificent white stallions, is celebrated in their impressive performance. Their carefully choreographed movements were originally intended for war. Then, only the strongest and most athletic of the horses were chosen. The Lipizzaner stallion was bred for its courage, strength and character, but the horse is also gentle, sensitive and exceptionally responsive to praise.

Death on the Railroad Airs 9pm Wednesday, May 8 Also airs 5/10 2am, 5am A classic story involving foul play, coverups, a murder mystery and a voyage of discovery explains what happened to a group of Irish men who immigrated to America. In 1832, railroad contractor Philip Duffy hired 57 Irish immigrants to lay railroad tracks in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Less than two months after their arrival, all 57 were dead. Did they all die — as was widely believed — from cholera? Or were some murdered? In 2003, twin brothers who discovered a secret file among their grandfather’s papers investigated the deaths of these men and found the location of their final resting place. Using the latest forensic and scientific investigative techniques, DNA, forensic analysis, facial reconstruction and historical detective work in Ireland and the U.S., modern detectives and experts unravel this extraordinary story.

Airs 9pm Sunday, May 12 The arresting sight of Sister Wendy Beckett, all teeth and glasses, burst on to our screens in the 1990s. An instant star, she travelled the world in her habit telling us the story of Christian art and painting but revealing little of her own extraordinary story. Arena goes in search of the ‘real’ Wendy, who, at 82, talks frankly, humorously, and profoundly about her life and spirituality for the first time.

The most shameful and best-kept secret in the U.S. military is the epidemic of rape and sexual assault within the ranks. An American female soldier in a combat zone is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. A culture of privilege and impunity has resulted in few prosecutions and the systematic isolation of women who dare to report the crimes.

An all-new edition of Backroads travels to Polson for the Flathead Cherry Festival to follow competitors in the cherry pit spitting and cherry pie eating contests. Viewers will hear the story of Hobson dentist Virgil Stewart who began his practice in 1912 during an era when most rural Montanans could not afford such care. But ‘Doc’ Stewart couldn’t turn anyone away. For 50 years, he filled and straightened teeth—often receiving nothing more than a chicken, some flour or an appreciative handshake. The next stop is the Sweet Grass Hills where local residents take us to an unexpected natural wonder rising out of the prairie. It is a tight squeeze to get into this limestone cave, but you’ll see why it is worth the effort. Finally, meet an eastern Montana man whose passion for art has literally spread all over the town of Forsyth. However Bob Watts has become better known for a different set of paintings—and it is not what he paints, but how he paints that gives him the notoriety. William Marcus hosts the program from historic locations around Havre and Chinook.

Dirk Gently Airs 9:15pm Saturdays beginning May 11 This series is based on the cult novel Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. It stars Stephen Mangan as an eccentric private detective with a completely unique take on the world. Gently believes in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things and applies this philosophy to his investigations into everyday mysteries. Perpetually broke, hopelessly impulsive, socially inept and utterly infuriating, most people suspect Dirk is nothing more than a cheap con-man. Nevertheless, his methods, though unusual, do often produce surprising results.

MontanaPBS Weekend Programs

Thank you!

Saturday

We just completed another successful Pledge Drive and we’d like to thank each and every one of you that made a pledge of support! Thank you for helping us continue to bring you programs that celebrate the beauty of Montana and our independent spirit. Programs that teach us, take us places we’ve never been before, and programs that are there for everyone to experience. We know that a pledge drive can interrupt your regular routine but we hope that you were able to enjoy a concert you would be otherwise unable to attend, explore a new part of your state or travel to far off places from the comfort of your own home. We are grateful to everyone who pledged during the March drive. Thank you!

Each year thousands of schools in the US participate in the National Geographic Bee. This exciting and highly competitive contest encourages teachers to include geography in their classrooms, sparks students’ curiosity about our world and increases public interest in geography. The Bee culminates in an entertaining, dramatic, and extremely challenging test of knowledge between stellar students who have made it over the hurdles to appear at the national level. This year— marked by the Bee’s 25th anniversary and Alex Trebek’s last year as host—the event will take place at historic National Theater in downtown Washington, DC.

Also in april The week of May 6–10, Arthur rolls out a week of five new episodes, beginning with a bullying theme.

Finally, several PBS KIDS series have episodes themed to Mother’s Day on Friday, May 10 and Sunday, May 12, including Curious George, Dinosaur Train, Daniel Tiber’s Neighborhood, Sid the Science Kid and Wordgirl.

Wilbur Rehmann Quintet Helena performers Wilbur Rehmann on saxophone and Blackie Nelson on guitar shine a light on jazz standards as this quintet heats up the studio of 11th & Grant. In his 80s, legendary Montana jazz guitarist Blackie Nelson demonstrates clearly how musicians seem to become younger even as they age. Jazz as it ought to be: The Wilbur Rehmann Jazz Quintet.
