Mount Rushmore: American Experience Airs 8pm Tuesday, July 2

Also airs 7/4 2am, 5am

High on a granite cliff in South Dakota’s Black Hills tower the huge carved faces of four American presidents. Together they constitute the world’s largest sculpture. The massive tableau inspires awe and bemusement. How, and when, was it carved? Who possessed the audacity to create such a gargantuan work? The story of Mount Rushmore’s creation is as bizarre and wonderful as the monument itself. It is the tale of a hyperactive, temperamental artist whose talent and determination propelled the project, even as his ego and obsession threatened to tear it apart. It is the story of hucksterism and hyperbole, of a massive public works project in the midst of an economic depression. And it is the story of dozens of ordinary Americans who suddenly found themselves suspended high on a cliff face with drills and hammers as a sculptor they considered insane, Gutzon Borglum, directed them in the creation of what some would call a monstrosity and others a masterpiece. Michael Murphy narrates.

Sent by President Thomas Jefferson to find the fabled Northwest Passage, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the most important expedition in American history—a voyage of danger and discovery from St. Louis to the headwaters of the Missouri River, over the Continental Divide to the Pacific. It was the United States’ first exploration of the West and one of the nation’s most enduring adventures. This program tells the remarkable story of the entire corps—including young army men, French-Canadian boatmen, Clark’s African-American slave and the Shoshone woman, Sacagawea, who brought along her infant son.

Ghosts of Machu Picchu Airs 8pm Wednesay, July 17 Also airs 7/19 1am, 4am, noon; 7/21 12:06am

Perched atop a mountain crest, mysteriously abandoned more than four centuries ago, Machu Picchu is the most famous archeological ruin in the Western hemisphere and an iconic symbol of the power and engineering prowess of the Inca. In the years since Machu Picchu was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, there have been countless theories about this “Lost City of the Incas,” yet it remains an enigma. Why did the Incas build it on such an inaccessible site, clinging to the steep face of a mountain? Who lived among its stone buildings, farmed its emerald green terraces and drank from its sophisticated aqueduct system? NOVA joins a new generation of archeologists as they probe areas of Machu Picchu that haven’t been touched since the time of the Incas and unearth burials of the people who built the sacred site. The program explores the extraordinary trail of clues that began on that fateful day in 1911 and continues to the present.

WordWorld Welcome to WordWorld, a colorful, word-rich place where friends have fun and meet challenges through word play. Each episode of WordWorld is a fun narrative built around a wacky troupe of WordFriends, who are characters first and words second. Shy Sheep loves to pretend; cautious Frog is the brainiac and word “expert”; impetuous Duck is still learning his letters (and social skills); gregarious Pig lives in the moment; pragmatic Ant is always on the go; affable Dog is a WordFriend’s best friend. WordWorld’s WordFriends invite the preschool viewer to join them on comic adventures, where problems can only be resolved by “building” the right word. Word building is a unique moment when children witness a word form and then ‘morph’ into the thing it is! Word building reinforces the pre-reading concept that letters make words, and that words have real meaning...and power. Words come alive, words save the day, and words become a child’s best friend in this 3D animated series. Learning to form words has never been this fun!

Also in july Summer Literacy Theme Weeks The week of July 1–5: Curious George has a “Creative George” week. The week of July 8–12: Dinosaur Train encores the two-part “Dinosaurs A-Z” on Monday and Tuesday.

The week of July 15–19: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood hosts a “Let’s Play Outside Week,” including the premiere of an episode with a “Safety at the Beach” story on Monday. The week of July 22–26: The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That presents a “Let’s Get Wet Week” featuring the premiere of a new episode with a “Dive Swim Scoop” story on Monday. The week of July 29-August 2: Arthur offers a “Sports Week.”

Broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the biggest and brightest birthday party in the country will also feature performances by Candice Glover; country music artist Scotty McCreery; actor and singer Darren Criss; musical prodigy and classical crossover star Jackie Evancho; Broadway and television star Megan Hilty; Broadway’s new hit Motown: The Musical; and five-time Academy Award-winner John Williams conducting music from the Oscar-winning blockbuster Lincoln; with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly. With 20 cameras positioned around the city, viewers at home are front and center for the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation.
