The Last Emperor Airs 8pm Sunday, August 11 Also airs 8/13 12:30am

This film is a compelling biography about Pu Yi, the last emperor of China. Pu Yi’s remarkable story is told through a series of chronological flashbacks beginning with his early life and upbringing in the Forbidden City, his brother’s childish challenge to his status of Emperor and his arranged marriage. In the flash-forward to his prison life, Pu Yi is interrogated and shown newsreels of Japanese war crimes in Manchuria and the defeat of Japan, and he realizes his need to assume responsibility for his complicity in Japanese atrocities. Written by Mark Peploe and co-written and directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, this film received nine Oscars and was voted Best Picture of 1987.

In February of 1950 the world’s largest bomber took off on a secret Cold War mission from Alaska. Inside the belly of the B-36 was a Mk.IV nuclear bomb and its 13-pound plutonium core. An engine fire forced the crew of 17 to abandon the massive bomber over the BC coast. Five of the crewmen, the bomber and its nuclear weapon, were presumed lost in the Pacific Ocean. Three years later a giant aircraft was found high in the Kologet Mountains of northern British Columbia, 200 miles north of its last known flight path.

The Lady Vanishes

Gravel in Her Gut and Spit in Her Eye Dorothy Johnson was a Western writer ahead of her time. Airs 8pm Sunday, August 18 Also airs 8/20 1am Adapted from Ethel Lina White’s 1936 novel The Wheel Spins—filmed by Alfred Hitchcock as The Lady Vanishes—the new Masterpiece/BBC coproduction is set against the tense backdrop of the Balkans of the 1930s and deftly weaves together the stories of a colorful trainload of characters. It is 1931. Iris is the darling of her social circle. While on holiday with friends in the Balkans, Iris decides to escape her friends’ raucous partying and travel home to London alone. Her expectations of peace are short-lived when she faints on the platform of the railway station in the scorching heat. She wakes in time to be rushed on to the train but with a pounding head and the feeling of being on the verge of a dream. Finally seated, Iris is comforted by Miss Froy, whose tweed suit and bookish looks belie a jovial and adventurous spirit. Comfort soon turns to horror when Miss Froy mysteriously disappears. With only the support of the infatuated young engineer Max Hare, Iris maintains the conviction that Miss Froy has somehow been abducted. As fellow passengers refute Iris’ story and threatening figures emerge to disprove Miss Froy’s existence, Iris’ unswerving certitude takes on the appearance of madness, and she finds herself struggling for her sanity—and for her life.
