Montana On My Mind A celebration of the beauty and spirit of “the last best state,” and inspired by the best-selling book of the same title, this program combines stunning film with inspiring quotes and music and commentary by Michael S. Sample. Its scenery, people, places and events give an unforgettable portrait of Montana. Airs Thursday 9/5 at 8:31pm, repeats Friday 9/6 at 12:30pm, Saturday 9/7 at 4am
In Keepers of the Land, Bill McIntosh and his two sons Lou and Gib feed nearly 850 cattle during the winter months with a team of draft horses and a low-slung hay sleigh, a chore the McIntosh ranch has done for more than a century. “We’ve always used draft horses on this ranch, and we probably always will,” Bill said. “Or, at least I hope we do.” Keepers of the Land: Three Montana Families & Their Homestead Legacies The Homestead Act of 1862 remains one of the most significant and enduring events in the westward expansion of the United States. The chance for free land and opportunity proved irresistible to many, and, in the following decades, 151,600 homesteads had been claimed in Montana—the most out of any state. Keepers of the Land is about three Montana families still living and working the land their ancestors homesteaded more than a century ago. Airs Thursday 9/19 at 7pm, repeats Sunday 9/29 at 10am
Glacier Park’s Night of the Grizzlies On the night of August 12, 1967, grizzly bears in Glacier National Park killed two young women and severely mauled one man. For everyone involved, it remains an unforgettable night of crisis, intense fear, bravery and, ultimately, grief. This dramatic and tragic story, and how it eventually influenced the fate of the grizzly bear in the continental United States, takes center stage in the historical documentary. Archival material, photographs, re-creations and gripping on-camera interviews with survivors, witnesses, family members, journalists and biologists provide a complete account of those events. Veteran film and television actor J.K. Simmons narrates. Airs Monday 9/9 at 11:30pm
11TH & GRANT WITH ERIC FUNK • Wilbur Rehmann Quintet Helena performers Wilbur Rehmann, saxophone, and Blackie Nelson, guitar, shine a light on jazz standards as this quintet heats up the studio of 11th & Grant. NOVA kicks off the fall season with a return to Ground Zero to witness the final chapter in an epic story of engineering, innovation, and the perseverance of the human spirit: the completion of One World Trade Center. This program examines the new skyscraper rising up 104 stories and 1,776 feet from the site where the Twin Towers once stood. In this update of NOVA’s Emmy-nominated special Engineering Ground Zero, which featured extraordinary behind-the-scenes access to the struggles of the engineers and architects working at 1 WTC and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, NOVA goes inside the construction of the tower’s final floors and the installation of its soaring, 800ton spire and beacon. NOVA also goes underground to see another engineering marvel taking shape here: the construction of a museum that will house artifacts from 9/11. The greatest test is still to come, though: Will the final product be a fitting site for national remembrance?

Each heart-warming episode sees all sorts of colourful characters pop in and out of the cafe, including old school friends like Richard, who secretly fancies Sarah, and best friends Chloe and Keiran. John, another former schoolfriend and former ‘fat kid,’ is also back in town but is now a successful businessman, driving a Porsche and looking good. There is a definite spark between John and Sarah, making Richard wildly jealous of the obvious attraction. Warm, funny and engaging and with a pedigree of hot comedy talent on and offscreen, The Cafe is the hub for all walks of life, and a lot of very funny comedy.

Set in a small seaside town, The Café is homely, comfortable and welcoming. Middle-aged divorcee Carol owns the place. Mary, in her seventies is Carol’s mum. She is very broad minded and a real character. Completing the trio is daughter Sarah. Having lost her job and been dumped by her boyfriend, she’s had to move back home from London, where a host of old school friends await. Until she gets her life back on track she’s helping out in the welcoming café that’s a bit like Friends’ Central Perk–but not quite as trendy!

8pm Mondays beginning September 23 The premiere season for this new PBS series will feature participants from four American cities—Nashville, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco—who want to explore unverified genealogical claims, passed down through family history, that may (or may not) connect them to an event or a historical figure. These cities were chosen as American crossroads of culture, diversity, industry and history, with deep pools of potential participants and stories. After participants are chosen, experts in genealogy, history and DNA will use family heirlooms, letters, pictures, historical documents and other clues to hunt down more information. These experts will enlist the help of local historians to add color and context to the investigations, ensuring every artifact and every name becomes a clue in solving the mystery. Geneology Roadshow will unearth family and community secrets, reveal notable relatives and discover unexpected stories that connect the past to the present. Many answers will be revealed on camera before a local audience, in a historic building relevant to the cities’—and the participants’—histories. “It is rare and wonderful when one can produce a show in which literally everyone is qualified to be a part of it,” said executive producer Stuart Krasnow. “PBS is the perfect partner to produce a show that celebrates the richness of the individual, and the differences between us that make our country unique.”

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood A new generation of preschool “neighbors” experience the Neighborhood of Make-Believe in Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. The first TV series inspired by the iconic, award-winning Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood stars 4-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original program’s Daniel Striped Tiger, who invites young viewers into his world, giving them a kid’s-eye view of his life. As they closely follow and share Daniel’s everyday adventures, preschoolers ages 2-4 and their families learn fun and practical strategies and skills necessary for growing and learning. Recent research proves what Fred Rogers knew all along: social and emotional competencies are the building blocks of doing well in school and in life. To help boost these invaluable skills among preschoolers, each episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood consists of two engaging stories that center on a common early learning theme such as dealing with disappointment. One of the key ingredients that sets the new series apart is its groundbreaking use of catchy, musical strategies that reinforce each theme and that preschoolers and parents will both sing—and use—together in their daily lives. Every story includes an “imagination moment” in which Daniel plays out a preschool fantasy set to music. Daniel Tiger talks directly to viewers, warmly drawing them in and making them feel like one of his neighbors. The series’ stories are based on extensive input from a wide range of early learning specialists, formative research with children and the benefit of more than 40 years of the work of Fred Rogers. It all adds up to a powerful tool for parents: an entertaining and thoughtful guide for today’s families that integrates music, interactivity and a research-based curriculum. The “Neighbor Day” episode premiers Monday, September 2. In this full half-hour special episode, Daniel learns how good it feels to be neighborly—and that one kind act can lead to many more.
ALSO IN SEPTEMBER Sesame Street will kick off its 44th season beginning September 16 with new episodes on Hispanic heritage and self-regulation, sprinkled with Sesame Street’s usual celebrity cameos.
