Curt Almy (left) and Morgan Pett sit down in Miles City to discuss their differing opinions on Montana’s climate. They are one of three conversations featured in Degrees of Difference, a program about Montanans restarting a conversation about the climate.

O C TO B E R 20 –2 5 Montanans like to talk about the weather, but how do we talk about climate? It’s a complex, dis-

concerting and divisive topic that will have a major impact on our independent, rural lifestyle in Montana. In a week-long series of reports and special programs, MontanaPBS, Montana Public Radio and UM School of Journalism explore the evolving weather patterns in the Big Sky.

Montana Ag Live will look at climate change and how it may affect agriculture, with Dr. Greg Pederson, Research Ecologist with the United States Geological Survey located at the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center. (10/20 6pm, repeating 10/27 at 11am)

Energy Quest USA—-Earth: The Operator’s Manual looks at US states and cities that are tapping new sources of energy and promoting sustainability. (10/21 8pm)

Frontline: Climate of Doubt goes inside organizations that fought to redefine the politics of global warming. (10/22 at 9pm, repeating 10/23 at Noon) Degrees of Difference The phrase “Climate Change” is so polarizing that just uttering it can end a friendship. Three sets of friends across Montana try to get past the controversy and have a productive conversation. (10/24 at 12Noon and 7pm, repeating 10/26 at 4:30pm)

Montana Journal: Climate Changing Business looks at the positive and negative impacts of a changing climate on everything from fishing guides to firefighters to farmers in Montana. How are businesses across the state coping with the differences? (10/24 at 12:30pm and 7:30pm, repeating Sunday 10/27 at 10am) In quick one-minute stories, UM Photo-Journalism students will examine climate impacts on plants, animals and habitat, and how the latest scientific research highlights Montana’s evolving ecosystem.

MTPR News staff will produce a series of in-depth feature stories and interviews about the impact of alterations in Montana’s climate, and what we can do about it. (Montana Evening Edition M-F 5:30 pm) A special hour-long version of The Write Question features interviews with Doug Peacock, author of In the Shadow of the Sabertooth: A Renegade Naturalist Considers Global Warming, The First Americans and The Terrible Beasts of the Pleistocene and Christopher White, author of The Melting World: A Journey Across America’s Vanishing Glaciers. (10/24 at 7:30 pm)

BURN: An Energy Journal explores sea-level rise in South Florida, along the Louisiana/Texas Gulf Coast, in New York City, and in Greenland. (10/24 at 1pm) Game Changer shows how extreme weather events, and the costs of cleaning them up, are starting to forge some common ground among Democrats and Republicans. Two former governors, two national strategists and the United Nations top climate negotiator will talk power and politics.

Backstory considers the history of American anxieties about the environment. Historian Bill Cronon weighs in on when “nature” became a thing to protect and not to fear.

Last Days of Man: Top Ten Ways to Extinction Dinosaurs, mammoths and Neanderthals—the celebrities of the evolutionary history—were all extinguished after their heyday. Is mankind here to stay or are our days numbered? If more than 99.9 percent of all species that ever lived on earth no longer exist, are humans also at risk? In the form of a top-10 list of doomsday scenarios, Last Days of Man: Top Ten Ways to Extinction is a two-part scientific examination of disasters that have the capacity to annihilate the human race. Threats from nuclear weapons, climate change, and meteorite impacts are, of course, on the list. But there are a number of lesser known yet much more probable risks to humanity.

“56 Up” is the eighth film in a series of landmark documentaries that began 49 years ago when UK-based Granada’s World in Action team interviewed a diverse group of seven-year-old children from all over England, asking them about their lives and their dreams for the future. Michael Apted, a researcher for the original film, has returned to interview the “children” every seven years since, at ages 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 and now at age 56. In this latest chapter, more of the original group takes part than ever before.

Saving Otter 501 Airs 7pm Wednesday, October 16 Also airs 10/18 3am, 10/20 1:02am, 10/21 noon This is the story of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s 501st attempt to save a stranded orphan otter. From her discovery as a newborn pup crying on the beach, through her rehabilitation in secret roof tanks atop the Monterey Bay Aquarium, follow Otter 501 as she learns how to survive in the wild. Watch as she is introduced to her surrogate mother — a method invented by marine biologist Karl Mayer and his team in 2005 — and follow as she struggles to learn how to dive, hunt, eat, and fend for herself in an artificial environment meant to mimic the “real world.” It is a tale of mysterious threats, persistent failures and small victories, where survival is a long shot at best. Throughout, Otter 501 acts as a lens. Her story reveals a previously unseen world of otter behavior and also acts to illuminate some of the most difficult ecological questions of our time: Do we have a responsibility to save species that hover on the edge? Are our actions the cause of the illnesses sweeping through the sea otter population? And since we simply can’t return the world to its pristine pre-human form, are preservation efforts like this doomed to fail? Otter 501’s survival may hold the hint of an answer.

War Of the Worlds 8pm Tuesday, October 29 Also airs 10/31 2am, 5am

On Sunday, October 30, 1938, the night before Halloween, millions of Americans gathered around their radios and heard a news bulletin about strange explosions on Mars, followed by other reports that led them to believe an alien invasion was in progress. Relive the thrill of Orson Welles’ infamous radio dramatization of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, 75 years after it set off one of the biggest mass hysteria events in U.S. history. The film examines the elements that made America ripe for the hoax: America’s longtime fascination with life on Mars; the emergence of radio as a powerful new medium; the shocking Hindenburg explosion of 1937; and Welles himself, the 23-year-old wunderkind director of the drama and mischief-maker supreme.

Peg + Cat This month, PBS will air a new animated preschool series PEG + CAT. The program follows the adorable, spirited Peg and her sidekick, Cat, as they embark on adventures, solve problems and learn foundational math concepts and skills. PEG + CAT premieres Monday, October 7, 2013, with a special one-hour broadcast of two back-to-back episodes, along with integrated online and mobile content. Each episode features a story in which Peg and Cat encounter an unexpected challenge that requires them to use math and problem-solving skills in order to save the day. Their adventures take viewers from a farm to a distant planet, from a pirate island to a prehistoric valley, from Romeo and Juliet’s Verona to Cleopatra’s Egypt to New York’s Radio City Music Hall. While teaching specific math lessons, the series displays the value of resilience and perseverance in problem-solving. “We are thrilled to bring PEG + CAT to the PBS KIDS audience this October, not just because it is a smart, funny and engaging series, but also because it meets a critical need for today’s kids,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. “Over half of our nation’s children are performing below proficient levels in math by the 4th grade, which is why we need to start early to give young children the foundation they need to succeed in this important curricular area. Peg also promises to be a positive role model for girls; this is critical because research shows that kids identify math as being for boys and not for girls as early as second grade. With her sense of humor, problem-solving skills and eagerness to collaborate and persevere, Peg will help encourage both boys and girls to explore math.”

26   MONTANAPBS OCTOBER 2013

Around MontanaPBS YOU made it happen... Thank you! We just completed another successful Pledge Drive and we would like to thank everyone who made a pledge of support. Your generous contributions help us continue to air programs that celebrate the beauty of Montana and our independent spirit. Programs that teach us and take us places we have never been before. Most importantly, they are programs that are made available for everyone to experience. We know that a pledge drive can interrupt your regular routine, but we hope that you were able to enjoy a concert you would be otherwise unable to attend or maybe you were able to explore a new part of the state from the comfort of your own home. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who pledged during the September drive. Thank you! If you meant to pledge but have not yet, there is still time. Simply fill out the form on the back page and mail it in, or visit our website at www.montanapbs.org. If you have any questions please call us at 1-800-426-8243.

Airs 8pm Tuesay, October 8 Also airs 10/10 1am, 4am, 11:30am The National Football League, a multibillion-dollar commercial juggernaut, presides over America’s indisputable national pastime. But the NFL is under assault as thousands of former players and a host of scientists claim the league has covered up how football inflicted long-term brain injuries on many players. In a special investigation, FRONTLINE joins prize-winning journalists Steve Fainaru and Mark Fainaru-Wada to reveal the hidden story of the NFL and brain injuries, drawn from their forthcoming book League of Denial (Crown Archetype, October 2013).
