11TH & GRANT WITH ERIC FUNK

Christmas with Philip Aaberg Airs 7pm Thursday, December 19 and 7pm Tuesday, December 24 Also 12/21 9:40pm; 12/23 3am Philip Aaberg brings his original holiday music and spirited Christmas favorites to 11th & Grant, infused with his expressive sound. The holidays are a special time for Aaberg. “The Christmas Eve of my childhood was full of wildness and excitement, wonder and reverence, peace and awe. Music was a huge part of that. The traditional carols in this recording live on for a very good reason, and I tried to re-imagine the melodies and go deeply into the lyrics to make them live anew.” Aaberg opens up pristine silences and melodically inventive expanses that paint an audible portrait of the sweeping Montana landscape. Although classically trained, Philip celebrates many traditions with his compositions. He weaves strains of blues and bluegrass as well as rock and new music throughout his melodic tapestries. Besides playing piano with the Boston Pops and participating in the Marlboro Chamber Music Festival, Philip has appeared with Peter Gabriel, Elvin Bishop, and the Doobie Brothers.

From the bitter cold of winter on the Rocky Mountain front to the heat and mayhem of the summer’s championship races in Montana and Idaho, Indian Relay follows three teams from different American Indian communities as they prepare for and compete in a grueling Indian Relay season. A mix of high-speed daring and exquisite horsemanship, Indian Relay is a sport widely enjoyed and practiced by men and women from tribal nations across the Rocky Mountain West. Each race begins with up to eight Indian athletes riding a horse bareback around a track at full gallop. After one lap, barely slowing down, the riders leap from their speeding horses to a second set of horses. Each team’s “mugger” must then catch the first horse or the team will be disqualified, creating a chaotic melee of up to 32 people and 24 thoroughbreds in front of the grandstands. Another top-speed lap, another daring horse change, and the teams race for the finish line, at speeds topping 40 miles an hour.

7:45pm This edition of Backroads travels to Polson for the Flathead Cherry Festival to follow competitors in the cherry pit spitting and cherry pie eating contests. Hobson dentist Virgil Stewart began his practice in 1912, when most rural Montanans could not afford such care. But ‘Doc’ Stewart couldn’t turn anyone away. Local residents from the Sweet Grass Hills take us to an unexpected natural wonder rising out of the prairie. It is a tight squeeze to get into this limestone cave, but you’ll see why it is worth the effort. And finally you’ll meet an eastern Montana man Bob Watts, whose passion for art has literally spread all over the town of Forsyth. Also airs 12/6 1am; 12/8 4:30am; 12/14 4pm

Its name stirs images of the savage, the untamable. Legend paints it as a solitary, blood-thirsty killer that roams the icy heart of the frozen north, taking down prey as large as moose, crushing bones to powder with its powerful jaws. But there is another image of the wolverine that is just beginning to emerge, one that is far more complex than its reputation suggests. This film takes viewers into the secretive world of the largest and least-known member of the weasel family to reveal who this dynamic little devil truly is. AM E R I CAN MAS TE RS

Airs 8pm, Tuesday, December 10 Also airs 12/8 11am; 12/12 1am, 4am

America in the 1960s and 70s was in turmoil. The civil rights struggle, the war in Vietnam and the sexual revolution defined a nation in conflict. But at 10 o’clock every Saturday night, in dorms and dens, in living rooms and bedrooms across the country, Americans watched “The Carol Burnett Show.” For 11 years, the wacky performer yelled like Tarzan and won— and sometimes broke—our hearts with her edgy, always sympathetic, characters. She could fall down a flight of stairs or hold her own in a duet with Julie Andrews. Yet, as with so many brilliant comedians, hers was a difficult childhood. A glimpse of something deeper and darker began to emerge in the dramatic career that followed her TV variety show.

The fictional Sherlock Holmes was a scientist who used chemistry, bloodstains and minute traces of evidence to catch criminals. In an era when eyewitness reports and “smoking gun” evidence were needed to convict criminals, Sherlock Holmes’ crime-scene methods were revolutionary. Forensic scientists, crime historians and Sherlockian experts reveal for the first time the astonishing impact Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation had on the development of real-life criminal investigation and forensic techniques. With a mix of interviews, dramatic reconstruction and archives, the program tells the story of the impact and legacy of the most famous crime fighter in history.

Airs 8pm Thursday, December 26 Also airs 12/29 2am · The arresting sight of Sister Wendy Beckett—all teeth and glasses—burst on to our screens in the 1990s. How did she know so much about art? Sister Wendy Becket reflects on her life and shares her love for paintings in the National Gallery, Louvre, and Fitzwilliam that tell the stories of the gospels.

In this feature, American Masters remembers composer, conductor and PEGOT winner Marvin Hamlisch. With new interviews with family, Barbra Streisand, Steven Soderbergh, Quincy Jones, Christopher Walken, Sir Tim Rice, Joe Torre, Woody Allen, John Lithgow, Lucie Arnaz, Ann-Margret, and others, American Masters reveals the events that led to both his staggering success and, ultimately, his even greater humanity: his creative process, struggles, inner turmoil and breakthroughs. Directed by Tony-winner Dori Berinstein.

Based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth and created for TV by Heidi Thomas, this series follows nurse Jenny Lee and the midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House convent, who visit the expectant mothers of Poplar, providing the poorest women with the best possible care. Chummy, PC Noakes and baby Freddy are back in the East End, Sister Bernadette, now known as Shelagh since leaving the convent, is preparing for her wedding to Dr. Turner and Jenny is facing huge challenges personally and professionally. At Christmas, when an unexploded World War II bomb is found under a warehouse close to Nonnatus House, the nuns and dozens of local families become homeless. Dr. Turner is in a race against time to immunize children against polio, but when the illness strikes closer to home, he finds there’s nothing he can do but hope. Chummy persuades a royal visitor to the East End to open the new Community Centre. It’s a race against time as Chummy tries to get everything in place for the big day.
