TIME TEAM AMERICA Plunges into the grime and glory of real-life archaeology: epiphany and exhaustion, discovery and disappointment. Through the dirt, the sweat, the dust and the rain, archeologists explore the mysteries of the past through what they find buried below the ground. Part adventure, part hard science, part reality show, Time Team America applies the latest technology and the team’s collective expertise to solving the riddles of the past— against a ticking clock.
Bones of a Badger Hole 8pm Tuesday, August 19 Also airs 8/21 2am, 5am At Badger Hole, Oklahoma, the crew excavates what may be the largest Folsom-period bison kill site in North America. Long extinct, Bison Antiquus roamed the plains 10,000 years ago. How were Paleoindian hunters able to kill so many of these massive bison— weighing 1,500 pounds each—without the help of bow and arrow or even horses?
Lost Civil War Prison 7pm Tuesday, August 26 Also airs 8/28 1am, 4am In the fall of 1864, the Confederate Army marched Union prisoners into a hastily built Camp Lawton in Jenkins County, Georgia. The population mushroomed to more than 10,000 in just six weeks. As Sherman’s army approached, guards and prisoners alike were forced to flee. Abadoned, the camp remained undesturbed for over a century.
The Lost Pueblo Village Chelsea Rose and Justine Shapiro examine findings in Badger Hole, Oklahoma.
8pm Tuesday, August 26 Also airs 8/28 2am, 5am In Cortez, Colorado, the Team explores the Dillard site, a village that some 1,500 years ago was home to people of the Basketmaker III era—a culture that advanced itself with technologies like farming, pottery and bow and arrow. Was this concentrated settlement the scene of a turning point in human history?

Power Brokers It’s arguably one of Montana’s most tragic stories. It led to the demise of Montana Power, the state’s only Fortune 500 Company, and it pushed power prices into the stratosphere. The documentary uncovers surprising relationships and business connections that would eventually cast a shadow over former Governor Marc Racicot and draw Montana Power into a federal investigation. Airs Tuesday 8/12 at 8pm, repeats Thursday 8/14 at 1am

Brought to You By ALEC They’ve been around for four decades and are behind some of the most influential and controversial legislation in Montana and the Nation, including Electricity Deregulation, Prison Privatization and Stand Your Ground laws. Despite these high-profile successes, few Americans know anything about the American Legislative Exchange Council, also known as ALEC. The group invites legislators from all 50 states to corporate-funded conferences where they sit down with corporate representatives and lobbyists to craft legislation together. Using extensive research and interviews with both critics and supporters, MontanaPBS examines how ALEC operates, their impact in Statehouses across the United States and critics’ claims that ALEC has failed to report millions of dollars spent lobbying. Airs Tuesday 8/12 at 9pm, repeats Thursday 8/14 at 2am
8/2 at 5pm · Hook, Line and Singer Backroads meets a western Montana man who has worked hard to improve access to the state’s great outdoors. A terrifying highway accident left Chris Clasby a quadriplegic, but it couldn’t diminish his passion for hunting and fishing. His spirit comes through as we tag along on a fishing trip on the Missouri River. Next is a tour of Rock City near Valier, a sandstone metropolis of hoodoos carved by Two Medicine River. The show profiles Chontay Standing Rock, a student at Stone Child College on the Rocky Boy Reservation, who has a unique approach to American Indian songs. He adds some English words and a striking stage presence to put his own spin on traditional music. And in Deer Lodge Backroads visits retired rancher, Gene Hensen, whose unlikely collection of home appliances grew from necessity. William Marcus hosts the program from the Fergus County Courthouse in Lewistown. 8/9 at 5pm · Not Forgotten Backroads remembers a DeBorgia man who left behind a legacy on film. He went from western Montana lumberjack to improbable filmmaker and, in the process, provided memories to share. It’s not possible to share a tasty artifact from Montana’s military past in Miles City -- you’ll find out why. Did you ever wonder what a cow was thinking? We’ll meet a Toston woman who took that a step further and wrote songs about it. Listen in on Judy Williams’ entertaining concert and see how her approach to having fun has impacted others. And learn the traditions and family ties that inspire Crow Indian artist Kevin Red Star during visits to his studio in Roberts and family ranch near Pryor. Also airs Monday 8/11 at 3:30am 8/16 at 5pm · Pancakes and Polo Get ready for wild rides, wild flowers, and wild stories in this episode. From 1972 to 1974, the Watergate scandal was frequently a part of “The Dick Cavett Show.” In fact, Cavett was at the forefront of national TV coverage, interviewing nearly every major Watergate figure as the crisis unfolded. With exclusive access to the archive of the show, this program documents the scandal in the words of the people who lived it: from the botched burglary at the Democratic National Headquarters; to the must-see TV of the daily Congressional Watergate hearings; to the ongoing behind-the-scenes battle between the White House and “The Dick Cavett Show,” culminating with the resignation of President Nixon on August 9, 1974. This program offers a unique opportunity to mark the 40th anniversary of a defining moment in American history.

Part 1 Airs 8pm Wednesday, August 13
Also airs 8/15 2am The Panama Canal is a 40-mile chain of deep channels, thousand-foot locks and man-made lakes stretching over the Continental Divide from sea to sea. Since its completion in 1914, it has changed the political and physical geography of the planet. The story of this engineering feat is one of epic proportions, filled with political deception, power struggles and the tragic death of thousands. Most of all, it is the story of the indomitable will of humanity in the most difficult of circumstances.
Airs 8:51pm Wednesday, August 13
Also airs 8/22 2am The conclusion of this two-part special presents the story of the building of the Canal. The lessons learned from de Lesseps’ failure led the United States to develop a lock canal rather than a sea level passage and to concentrate on the eradication of yellow fever. Houses were built for the workers and roads paved. The workers lived comfortably, though within a strictly enforced hierarchy of salaries and benefits. By 1912 more than 40 nationalities worked in the Panama Canal Zone. Thousands of men died from dynamite explosions and mud slides. After eight years of blood, sweat and tears, the Canal opened in 1914 within weeks of the outbreak of WWI.

The Early Years Airs 7pm, August 20 This episode details the birth of American aviation—from the Wright Brothers’ earliest flights, through the turbulent era of the 1920s. Meet these captains of the Aviation Industry as young men as they design and construct planes for America’s effort in World War I, begin flying the mail in the 1920s, and develop the first passenger airlines. “I love a lot about the station. But one thing, especially, is the great storytelling. While cleaning-up after dinner the other night with my little kitchen TV on to distract me from the tedium, I was washing pans, and was brought to tears by an episode of Call the Midwife. It was so unexpected and such an art to be so engaging.”

The Pteranodon Family is excited to be going back to the “Classic in the Jurassic!” This time, it’s a race between pterosaurs from each of the three Time Periods. The best part-all the family members will have a role to play in the race! Mom and Tiny will be in-air referees, Buddy and Don will do “play-by-play”, and Dad and Shiny will man the start and finish lines. It’s an exciting race as the pterosaurs fly between hanging vines, swoop through a canyon, push through a wind tunnel, slalom over and under branches, and carry food from a pond as they race to the finish line! Teddy Pterodaustro finishes first, but the race is contested when Remy Rhamphorhynchus (another competitor) protests that Teddy never retrieved a fish from the pond. Everyone is surprised to learn that the Perodaustro don’t eat fish, they strain plankton through their bristle teeth. Teddy shows everyone how he does it to prove that he did indeed get food from the pond. Teddy is declared the winner! Buddy, Tiny and Mom are riding the Dinosaur Train when they bump into their old friend, Crystal Cryolophosaurus. She’s on her way to visit King Cryolophosaurus down in Jurassic Antarctic and invites our family along. Mom and the kids jump at the chance, and upon arrival surprise King as he’s singing a brand new song, Top Carnivore. King and Crystal’s heartfelt reunion is marred when Crystal tries to convince a reluctant King to take this fantastic new song out on the road to share with his adoring Mesozoic fans. But King doesn’t like leaving home and excuses himself to do some thinking. Buddy and Tiny follow and King sings a song called Good ol’ Gondwana to explain his feelings about his home.

Increase the impact of your donation Did you know that with a matching gift you can sometimes double or even triple the power of your gift? Your company may match your gift to MontanaPBS and increase the total amount of your contribution.
Here’s how it works Check with your Human Resources office to see if they offer a matching gift program. If they do, they will match your gift to a certain level. All you need to do is pick up your company’s required form and send it to us—we’ll take care of the rest. Below is a limited list of organizations who participate in matching gift programs. If you are a current or retired employee of one of these companies, they may match your contribution. IBM Chevron Conoco Phillips Exxon Mobile Foundation First Interstate Bank General Mills 3M Foundation UPS Foundation Home Depot Foundation
BNSF Foundation DOW Chemical Co. AT&T Foundation GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Northwestern Energy Davidson Companies ING Foundation Boeing Company Oracle

If your company is not listed, ask your personnel department if they have a matching gift program—many do. Maybe yours does too! FREE GIFT OFFER Are you currently a sustaining member of MontanaPBS? Do you want to make donating even easier? Consider switching your payment method from your credit card to your bank account. Why switch? 1. Credit Cards expire. When they expire we have to send you extra mail asking for updated information. More mail means less of your donation is going to the programs you love. 2. Credit Card numbers can be stolen. When you receive a new card we can no longer process the old one which results in more mail to you and an interruption in your monthly program guide. If you decide to switch, you can receive a set of notecards which includes our special 30th anniversary edition print “Television Worth Watching.”
