Greg Girard lived in Vancouver in the early 1970s before relocating to Asia for several decades. The photos he took in Vancouver at this time are some of his earliest works, and show vintage views of Vancouver landmarks such as the PNE (at a time when the PNE had burlesque performers) and Chinatown, as well as long-forgotten and now lost points of interest that Girard frequented such as pool halls, diners, and used car lots, mostly in Vancouver’s downtown east side. As the photographs were made early in the career of an artist who travelled extensively, many of the works now exist only as contact sheets, which the artist has revisited and created new photographic prints from. Having moved back to Vancouver in 2011, Girard began a series of photographs again studying Vancouver, this time focusing on the industry of Vancouver as a port city. A small selection of newer, colour views of Vancouver’s working waterfront will compliment the earlier works, showing together images of the changing city. Greg Girard’s works have been featured in National Geographic, TIME, Newsweek, The New Yorker, The National Post, The Star, and numerous other publications. Several books on Girard’s work have been published, including Magenta’s Phantom Shanghai, now in it’s 3rd edition of printing and listed as one of the top 10 photography books of all time by The Independent, (UK). Most recently, Girard’s work has been shown at the Richmond Art Gallery (Richmond, BC), the International Centre for Photography (New York), PM Gallery (London, UK), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), and at the Yixian International Photo Festival (China).
