from the publisher… Keep It Moving! I know, I know, most publications focus on health and wellness in January so why are we doing it in February? We chose February because we suspect you may have spent a good part of January packing up holiday decorations, getting your finances organized for April 15, and resting up from a busy January. Now that all of that is taken care of, you can focus on your family’s health and wellbeing. I made a commitment to learn to play tennis this year so I signed up for lessons starting this week. I admit to feeling a little clumsy learning something new but it’s a great chance to get outdoors, meet new people, and get extra exercise. If I end up loving it and want to continue it’s a bonus! February is a great time to get involved in a new activity that will get your kids off the couch, away from computer screens, and moving. We have several options in this issue: gymnastics, yoga, and martial arts. All offer ample benefits and a lot of local options. Nicole Amaral gathered information on local gyms offering childcare so you can find an option that works for your family. Mom and Dad can get in a workout and the kids are enjoying playtime–it’s a definite win! Plus, you may just schedule in more workouts. (Date night, perhaps?) Finally, if one of the many bugs going around has reached your family, check out our article on “hurry up healthcare” on pages 20-21. Malia Jacobson has great tips on choosing between an urgent care center and the emergency room.

MILITARY MOM:
Staying Fit
T
here’s nothing like a new year to motivate and inspire. If improved health and wellness are on your list for 2018, look no further than Monterey military spouses to lead the way. When I first moved to Monterey, pregnant with our older son, I was so excited to learn about all the ways I could stay fit, be a part of a community, and support fellow military spouses in their own journeys. Stroller Strong Moms love to Sweat Like A Mother, or SLAM! Founded by a military spouse who is also the SLAMBoss of the Monterey group, Stroller Strong Moms now has 16 affiliates open for anyone to join. SLAM mamas can participate in daily workouts, accompanied by their strollers, in the fresh air at Lover’s Point or Toro Park. Workouts vary and include weight training, cardio, and yoga. SLAM creates a community of moms who love to sweat together, support each other, and be role models for their kids. Stroller Warriors is a free running club for military spouses and family members with over 40 chapters in the U.S. and abroad. Meeting every Tuesday and Thursday, Stroller Warriors bond through running and community. Runners of all paces and ability levels are welcome. Hike It Baby is a community of parents and caregivers who love the great outdoors and want to bring that love to their growing families. Led by a military spouse, the Monterey Hike It Baby chapter meets weekly to explore the beautiful Central Coast. Hikes range from easy strolls to more challenging treks but all are child-friendly. Hike It Baby has branches in all 50 states and 19 international regions, perfect for those military moves. Fitness centers are another great way to stay active in the new year. The Monterey Bay Athletic Club at the Naval Postgraduate School and Price Fitness Center at the Presidio offer free access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for active duty military and dependents. Not quite sure where to start? Both gyms have excellent personal trainers on staff and group classes available. From weight training to yoga, military moms and dads are making 2018 their best year yet! Katie Begley is a Navy veteran and military spouse. Katie is an advertising sales executive for Monterey Bay Parent Magazine. She is the mother of 1 year-old and 2 month-old sons. MONTEREY BAY PARENT • february 2018

We all love the candy, gifts, and flowers but do you know where the holiday originates?
Fun Facts about Valentine’s Day
I
s Valentine’s Day an invention of greeting card companies or the feast day of a real saint? The true origins of Valentine’s Day are murky at best. Among scholars, theories abound as to what, or who, started this ancient holiday. Here are a few of the most popular thoughts. Cupid, the iconic figure often associated with Valentine’s Day, is actually an ancient Roman God. According to the legend, he is the child of Mercury (the messenger god with wings), and Venus (the god of love). He is usually represented as a winged baby carrying a bow and arrow, sometimes wearing armor. Some say that the armor stands for the strength of love, and others argue that the armor is a comment on the thin line between love and war. Either way, when Cupid’s arrow finds its mark, love blooms! Some say the roots of Valentine’s Day lie in ancient Rome. A pagan feast called Lupercalia was celebrated by the Romans on February 15th. This holiday honored the fertility God Faunus as well as the gods believed to have founded Rome: Romulus and Remus. On this day, after animal sacrifices were made, single women’s names were placed in an urn and bachelors each drew a name. The 8
montereybayparent.com
matched couples were then paired for the following year. This went on for about eight-hundred years before a Pope replaced this with the feast day of St. Valentine around 498 AD. Was there really a saint named Valentine? Yes, but there were several! According to AmericanCatholic.org, the historical record for St. Valentine is so nebulous that his feast day was removed from the Church’s official Saint Calendar in 1969. Three of the most likely candidates were all priests named Valentine. One Valentine was known for helping persecuted Christians during the reign of Claudius the Second and was executed on February 14th. Another Father Valentine married couples in secret when marriage was forbidden by the Roman Empire. The third Valentine wrote a letter to his jailer’s daughter while in prison, signing it “from your Valentine,” possibly starting the trend of using this expression. Handwritten sentiments given to loved ones began sometime in the 1400s. One legend says that the first Valentine card was sent by the Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415. Later, in England, the Victorians took Valentine greetings to a whole new level. In
the nineteenth century, Victorians bought or created complicated Valentine cards with pull-tabs, moveable parts and some even had pockets to include a lock of the sender’s hair! Meanwhile, in America, Esther A Howland became known as the “Mother of the Valentine” when she began creating the first massproduced handmade Valentine cards in the 1840’s. Hallmark got into the game when they began printing and selling Valentine’s Day cards in 1916, a smart move since Valentine’s Day is the second biggest holiday for giving cards after Christmas. About 142 million cards are exchanged on Valentine’s Day, not including those little ones kids give each other at school. Valentine’s Day isn’t celebrated worldwide. It is popular in Canada, Mexico, France, and Australia in addition to the US and Britain. No matter how Valentine’s Day became what it is today, February 14th is a great opportunity to let others know how much you love them, whether through a greeting card, gift or loving gesture. Tiffany Doerr Guerzon is a freelance writer who contributes to a variety of regional and national publications.

Ten Fun Activities for the Kids on Valentine’s Day
V
alentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about romantic love. Show your kids how much you love them by doing some of these fun V-Day activities.
1.
Slip a Valentine card under each kid’s pillow and tell them to check underneath for a fun surprise when they wake up.
2.
For breakfast, cut out toast with a heart shaped cookie cutter. Spread the heart shape with cream cheese and top with strawberry or raspberry jam. Then, use the rest of the bread by placing the piece of toast with the heart cut out on a plate and filling the center with red berries. Wet the rims of wine glasses or plastic cups then dip into pink or red sugar. Fill the cups with sparkling apple juice.
6.
Visit a local nursing home and hand out flowers or valentines to the residents.
7.
Cook up a valentine-themed dinner. Serve heart-shaped individual pizzas, or top pizza with heart-shaped pepperoni. (Cut pepperoni pieces into hearts with a mini cookie cutter.) Many pizza companies offer heart shaped pizza for takeout or delivery on V-Day as well. Serve with pink milk or sparkling juice.
8.
During dinner, have each family member say why they love the person sitting next to them. Go around the table one way, and then do it again in the opposite direction.
3.
Draw a large, open heart on the bathroom mirror at kid-height with a dry erase marker. Write “I love” with an arrow pointing to the heart shape. When your child looks in the mirror to brush their teeth, his or her face will be in the heart!
9.
After dinner, cuddle up in PJs to watch a Valentine’s Day show such as a Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown, Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That: Hurray! It’s Valentine’s Day, Winnie the Pooh, A Valentine for You, WordWorld: My Fuzzy Valentine, or Madly Madagascar.
10.
Last but not least, don’t forget story time! Try one of these love-themed books: Queen of Hearts by Mary Englebreit, Love, Splat by Rob Scotten, Snowy Valentine by David Peterson, I Love You, Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt or Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day is Cool by James Dean. Spread the love by trying one or more of these ideas this February 14th. By replacing candy and gifts with time spent together, you will surely brighten your kids’ days and make fun family memories.
4.
Glam up lunch boxes by using your heart cookie cutter to shape sandwiches. Include a treat of valentine candy and—of course—a love note.
5.
Draw a trail of hearts on the driveway or sidewalk in red and pink chalk. Kids can follow the path by hopping from one to the next on the way to the car or bus stop.

Flipping For Gymnastics Hey, parents! Are your kids bouncing off the walls? Tracking mud through the house as they run around outside in mud puddles and then come charging in, still full of energy? Jumping up and down on the bed at bedtime because they didn’t get all their wiggles out in the rainy winter weather? Or maybe they’re just bored after school and need another activity to keep them busy. There is a great option for active kids to get their energy out and gain strength and body awareness while doing it: gymnastics!
G
ymnastics offers many benefits for kids from a very early age: increased flexibility, improved strength, better body awareness and coordination, good cardiovascular exercise, and huge benefits to bone health. Regular gymnastics classes give kids an energy outlet that helps them know their body better and learn fun new skills at the same time. The Monterey Peninsula offers a number of options for gymnastics for kids of all ages. Active kids will appreciate a new way to use their bodies, and kids who need more exercise will enjoy gymnastics. Classes are available for beginners and kids who have prior experience and kids who have tried traditional gymnastics classes and want to try something new. (Our personal family favorite is Ninja Warrior class, a dynamic, action-packed obstacle course/tumbling class that leaves our 6-year-old son happy and tired, and with new skills in 10

his ninja arsenal, every week.) Kelly Brady, owner and head coach at Rising Star Gymnastics in Monterey, offers this testimonial: “Gymnastics builds confidence, discipline, and social skills in children besides strength, agility, and kinesthetic awareness. Every child who takes part in gymnastics benefits in countless ways regardless of their age or level.” Rising Star offers adult gymnastics classes besides a bevy of options for kids. For Monterey area parents, there are plenty of options for places to bring our kids to gymnastics classes, and each gym offers a range of classes for all skill types, ages, and interests. From mommy-and-me classes for the under-2 set to Ninja Warrior classes, parkour, trampoline classes, cheerleading, and competitive teams up to age 18 (or level 10), local gymnastics academies have something for everyone. Classes range in price from $12-25 per class, depending on age, length of class, and location. Some places offer sibling discounts. Classes are 45-120 minutes long. Most gyms offer a free trial class so that kids (and parents) can see how they like it before committing to the class. Yes, gymnastics is more expensive than swim classes or traditional sports, but the new skills your child will learn make it worth every penny. Just make sure that your kids don’t practice their cartwheels, flips, or high kicks in the house. Some gyms offer open gym time on the weekends for kids to practice their new skills. This is recommended if you want to save your furniture! So give gymnastics—or Ninja class, trampoline class, or cheerleading—a try and see how it benefits your kids! They will use up lots of energy and get stronger, happier, and healthier. And, who knows, you may end up signing up for a class yourself. LOCAL GYMNASTICS OPTIONS Rising Star Gymnastics 2024 Del Monte Ave., Monterey Classes offered: Mommy-and-me (from 18 months), preschool, Ninja Warrior, trampoline, sports agility/parkour, team/recreational gymnastics up to level 10, and adult classes.

Martial Arts For Children
M
any parents enroll their child in a martial arts class because they want the child to be involved in a year-round physical activity. Then, they learn that the benefits of martial arts training go far beyond the physical. Children learn valuable life lessons they can use throughout their lives. Martial arts benefits include: Self Discipline: Students are expected to follow basic rules when they are in the studio. Those rules include arriving on time, wearing a clean uniform, focusing on the instructor, and refraining from horseplay. Your child’s teacher will introduce the rules and reinforce them at each session. Children learn what behavior is acceptable and the self-discipline they develop will extend to their behavior outside of their classes. Respect: Children learn to bow to their instructors and to treat other students as they wish to be treated. Self Confidence: Working through the belt ranking system gives a child measurable goals to work towards
and the feeling of accomplishment as they reach those goals. Socialization Skills: Martial arts training gives children the opportunity to take part individually alongside other students. Although it isn’t a team sport, children learn valuable team skills including cooperation, enhanced ability to listen, and taking one’s turn. For children who are shy or slower to socialize, the environment provides a safe place to interact with peers. Encouraging non-violent conflict resolution: Depending on the style, martial arts training emphasizes avoiding physical altercations and finding a peaceful resolution to conflicts. What you should look for in a martial arts training center: 1. Good instructors. Check the qualifications. Attend a few classes as an observer and watch how the teacher interacts with the students. You know your child best and not all instructors will be a good fit. Meet with the studio owner and ask
3. Price and schedule. Price varies depending on the school, the number of classes, and length of contract so think about what you want. If your child is new to martial arts, be leery of contracts and long-term commitments. 4. School values. Finally, be sure that the school philosophy matches your goals and what you want for your child. How is conflict handled? Does the school emphasize competition or is the goal for each child to do their best? The skills a child learns from martial arts training will give them the confidence to succeed in all areas of their life. There are plenty of excellent studios in the Monterey Bay area to get your child started on a lifetime of positive benefits from their training.

Hurry-Up Health Care Where to turn when your child needs medical attention, STAT
When your little one needs fast health care, choosing where to go can be confusing. Here, we help you sort out whether to rush to the emergency room or an urgent care clinic. By Malia Jacobson
S
ooner or later, all parents face an unexpected medical meltdown: The baby spikes a scorching fever in the wee hours. The preschooler swallows something suspicious. The middleschooler wrenches an ankle at basketball practice. When faced with a medical emergency—or a situation that could become one—what’s a parent to do? Head straight for the chaotic, costly hospital emergency room? Or a local urgent care center? Don’t load your sick kiddo into the car just yet. The best first move is to contact your child’s pediatri20

cian, says Ernest Leva, M.D., director of the Pediatric Emergency Department at The Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. With knowledge of your child’s medical history and any existing conditions, your child’s pediatrician is best equipped to steer you toward the appropriate critical-care option, says Leva. And whatever treatment course you take, notifying your pediatrician allows the doctor to update your child’s medical chart and follow up as needed. When it comes to choosing a site for quick emergency care,
Leva prefers pediatric emergency departments over urgent care centers. While urgent care centers can provide fast care for minor injuries, Leva says that choosing an urgent care center first can slow down access to critical treatments. “Often, patients end up being transferred to an emergency department anyway,” he notes. If a child needs a CAT scan, IV hydration, care for a broken bone, or surgery of any kind (for example, when a child aspirates or ingests a foreign body that must be removed surgically), the child is much better off in a hospital setting, where

the required procedure can be performed quickly, says Leslie Mihalov, M.D., chief of Emergency Medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The Centers for Disease Control report that over 98 percent of emergency department patients can be treated on-site without being transferred to another facility. (And concerns over long wait times are often unfounded: over 20 percent of ER patients are seen within 15 minutes.) When might parents want to consider an urgent care center instead of an emergency room? Urgent care centers can be a quick alternative to a regular doctor’s office visit, where patients can be treated for minor cuts, obtain prescriptions, and get basic labwork and X-rays. Another factor is cost: according to insurance provider Blue Cross Blue Shield, the average emergency room visit has a pre-insurance price tag of $1,045, while urgent care treatment comes in at just $130. But before you write off the ER as too spendy, consider this: if your child needs to be transferred to an ER after visiting urgent care, as many do, you’ll end up footing the bill for both. Most insurance plans cover emergency room care, and federal law requires that emergency rooms treat all patients, regardless of insurance status of ability to pay. The bottom line: “Any time a parent perceives a life threatening condition, they should call 911 and
take the patient to the emergency room,” says Leva. Conditions requiring a swift ER visit include significant injuries or deformities to limbs; difficulty breathing; ingestion of a foreign body; head injury or concussion; significant trauma or bleeding; sudden severe pain; severe allergic reactions; and dizziness, disorientations, or sudden changes in mental functioning. Questions about fevers, vomiting, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms should be fielded by a child’s pedia-

trician, says Leva, while concerns about possible poisoning warrant a call to the local Poison Control Center. Those experts will advise you on whether your child needs to head straight to the ER or not. And you can breathe a bit easier, knowing you’re done the right thing.
