Ten things to do with longer days I

love summertime! Here on the Central Coast, the temperatures don’t always reflect the seasons, but having the sun up in the morning and the daylight on the way home leaves me with a smile. The late afternoon-early evening light allows doing activities outside. Here are some ideas on what to do with the longer days:

1.

Walk your dog and child. It is a great opportunity to chit chat about what is happening in each other’s lives, talk about the dog, speculate about the neighbors, or look at the flower-to-weed ratio in the yards. Solicit older kids too since they benefit from focused attention as well.

2.

Teach your child to use tools, including power tools. As a dad, you probably have a collection of tools in your garage. Learning about tools teaches kids about planning, eye-hand coordination, and measurement. Also, kids are engaging in a controlled risk activity, since you’re right there. With your supervision, they can practice tool use without worry that something will get damaged. Power tools can be introduced, appropriate to age, and with safety instruction. Using an electric screwdriver or a power drill, with Dad’s support, can be exciting for children. There doesn’t have to be a project in mind. Kids can enjoy pounding nails into a board as much as planning and building a birdhouse.

3.

Dance with your child. It’s hard to shed the self-consciousness and memories of junior high dances, but kids don’t care how silly we look. Put on good music to dance to and move to it. Younger children might en-

6

montereybayparent.com

joy choreographing moves for you while older children can teach you the latest dance moves. Together, you can also learn a dance by watching tutorial videos and then performing it for the other parent.

4.

Go to the beach late in the day. Late in the day is a great time to take a stroll on the beach. Much of family time at the beach is spent when there is more sunshine and time to frolic. You can ask kids how the beach looks different at that hour. If you eat dinner earlier, perhaps you can have dessert on the beach. Popsicles, anyone? Watching the sunset on the beach can make them appreciate the coastline and their time with family.

5.

Late trip to the library. Most of the libraries in our area have later hours on certain days of the week. These later hours offer a great opportunity to select books and try them out or bring them home for bedtime stories. This activity is not restricted to young children. For older children, taking a trip to the library can provide insight into your child’s growing interests in topics in which they are interested. Or, you can even check out two copies of the same book and read it together, creating a mini-book club.

6.

Play catch outside. It does not matter what you throw back and forth—a baseball, a Frisbee, a beach ball, a balloon—everyone can play catch. Besides building eye-hand coordination, the rhythm and challenge of keeping the object in motion is entertainment in and of itself. Also, as a dad, you are providing focused time on the kids where your attention is on them.

Father’s Day by Rob Weisskirch

7.

Play card games. Card games are great for teaching kids all kinds of skills—numeracy, planning, strategy, gracious winning, and losing, among others. I particularly like card games because there are few pieces, and rules tend to be less complex– think of War, Uno, or 21. Kids recognize that they have a chance to win with every deal, so it can be a lesson in thinking ahead.

8.

Take a bike ride. We are fortunate to have many bike trails in our area. Extra daylight makes a family bike ride a safe and fun activity before it is time to get ready for bed. Not only will this promote exercise, but it will also allow the kids to see their local community differently. Plus, it can tire them out for a good night’s sleep.

9.

Play a video game together. I know kids spend lots of time in front of screens already—however, the situation is different when activities are done together with parents. Talking with a child and learning how to work together while playing a video game can provide focused attention on an activity that has interest for the child. The activity can also provide insight for Dad to understand what kind of competitor is your child. Does he or she focus on winning at all costs? Does he or she learn from mistakes? Does he or she give up easily?

10.

Do art together. With good light of the afternoon, it is a great chance to create art together. Use whatever supplies you have or buy special art supplies for Daddy-kid art night (Mommy can be included too). The benefits of creativity and art activities are numerous with the novel thinking, the decision making, the perspective taking, and the planning that are involved in making a creative work. If you have children who are self-conscious about their art skills, few things serve as an equalizer than a father’s unused art skills. Plus, there is evidence that creative art activities can be a stress reliever for adults and children. So, now it is time to take advantage of our long summer days! Walk, teach, dance, explore, play, ride, and create together! MONTEREY BAY PARENT • july 2019

Santa Cruz Public Libraries Summer Reading Program Find yourself in the library this summer! The Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ (SCPL) Summer Reading Program, A UNIVERSE OF STORIES, began on June 1st and runs through August 10th. Our entire reading and events program has been

revamped this year to be more inclusive and to put an even greater focus on reading. This year’s theme, A UNIVERSE OF STORIES, was chosen to help inspire children of all ages to dream big, believe in themselves, and create their own story. It also celebrates the richness of perspectives that arise when we include stories from diverse people. And finally, we celebrate 50 years of space exploration and the anniversary of the lunar landing. To sign up, visit santacruzpl.org/srp or visit any branch library, the Bookmobile, or download the Beanstack mobile app. Participants of all ages are encouraged to read five books of their choosing, listen to audiobooks, or be read to. This year we have a new online platform for families and individuals to track their reading over the summer. The platform allows readers to add reviews and claim rewards and includes a mobile app. Paper reading logs are available to those who prefer to track their reading that way. And be sure to check the online calendar at santacruzpl.org/calendar for an entire summer of free events, including three performance by James Henry Percussion on June 20th, and NorCal Bats and Santiago the Magician on June 25th. The Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ Summer Reading Program is made possible through our partnership with Atlantis Fantasyworld, the Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Live Like Coco, Omega Nu, Santa Cruz, and Watsonville Rotary, and the Collaborative Summer Reading Program (CSRP) cslpreads.org – Diane Cowen, Communications Manager

BIRTHDAY PARTY PLANNING

10 Tips From Monterey Parents As our children grow up, each year is a milestone worth celebrating. If planning a birthday party is something your child wants, it can either be a fun experience or complete torture for Mom and Dad. Know that you have options, and there’s more than one way to plan a party. I’ve got ten helpful tips to guide you through party planning. Lock-down the 3 “musthaves.” Keep things simple by asking your son or daughter to name three “musthaves” that will make the party great. You can provide some guidance by offering some categories like a favorite food to serve, activity, theme, or location. Once you agree to the three things needed to make your child happy with his or her party, base all other decisions on your time, budget, and preferences. “I ask my daughter to choose a theme, and what type of cake she wants, then I run with the remaining details.” Kristina Simone, mom to a 7-year old

1

The guest list. Your guest list can be as extensive as you like as long as you have the space, money, and lots of food. As your child grows, consider keeping the guest count to a manageable number based on the amount of help you’ll have. Generally, you can expect about

2

10

montereybayparent.com

60% of guests to attend a party, so for older kids, sending out 10-15 invitations is reasonable. “You should do what feels right for you and not feel pressured to invite every single kid in your child’s class unless of course, that’s what you want.” Alison Bogan, mom of three Location, location, location. The site you choose is vital in setting the tone, but also in helping you stay on track. You’d be surprised how costly and demanding a party at home can be so that you might opt for a simpler party at one of Monterey’s many “kid-zones.” You generally pay per person so you know the party price ahead of time, entertainment is built-in, and you don’t have to worry about strawberry stains on your white rug. If you prefer some ambiance, take advantage of our beautiful Monterey weather and host a pool, beach or park party. Outdoor parties allow for less mess and some flexibility if you’d like to add in some personal touches.

3

Time it Out. Depending on the season, potential party guests may be be traveling or spending extra time with family. You might consider timing your party so as not to interfere with weekend family plans or look to hosting a weekday party during the summer months. Sleepovers aside, 2-4 hours should

4

allow plenty of time for fun and is the typical time allotted when booking a venue. Allow the first 15-30 minutes for guests to arrive and get settled. A simple idea to promote a pleasant party flow is to provide open play and refreshments as guests arrive, followed by one hour of activities, then half an hour for cake and presents, ending with another 30 minutes of open play until parents come. “I considered nap times and busy weekend schedules and opted for a morning party when my daughter turned one.” Ashley King, mom to a 19-month-old Fun times. Activities and entertainment have endless possibilities. The park and beach come with built-in entertainment. Try setting up a friendly T-ball tournament or sandcastle contest to make things interesting. “For my daughter’s last birthday, she chose a fairy theme. I took a different approach, keeping it non-commercial, somewhat gender-neutral, and eco-friendly. The kids participated in a scavenger hunt with the goal of finding pieces of that would become a craft project to create their very own fairy garden. Most of the pieces were items from nature or other up-cycled materials like an acorn to be used as hats or popsicle sticks to make a fairy house door.” Kristina Simone, mom to a 7-year-old

5

MONTEREY BAY PARENT • july 2019

Decor. Decor starts with a theme and location. You could save some time and money and skip it altogether, especially when hosting an outdoor party or one at one of the party venues. If you’re leaning toward some more memorable decorations, look for items that you could repurpose such as a banner or centerpiece that would work perfectly with your child’s room decor! Knowing you can repurpose one or more of the decorations might help the decorator in you feel better about spending a bit more on certain pieces that you’ll enjoy for more than just one day.

6

Food. Stick with what you know—this is not the time to go from the queen of take out to master chef. Also, don’t feel the pressure to serve junk food. While it’s fine to do just one day a year, you probably don’t want a bunch of hyped-up kids running around. Order some simple pizzas paired with a veggie tray, several bowls of fruit, plain hummus, and baked chips or tortilla chips with mild salsa and simple guacamole. You can

7

serve plain water alongside a strawberry-infused variety and if you want a sweeter option, add a pitcher of 100% pure juice to the table. If you have adults at the party, you can do all of the above and add in some of your favorite potluck-type dishes great for serving larger crowds or opt for catering. “For my son’s first birthday I wanted to be present, so I ordered catering from a taco place for just about $10 per person. The caterers brought the food and cleaned up the mess, leaving me to celebrate the big milestone for our family.” Kayla Naylor, mom of two The big day. On the big day, try to relax. Whether parties are your thing or not, ask for help from family and friends, so you have the chance to take it all in. Also, remember to celebrate you and your spouse! Pop open a special bottle of champagne and toast to another year as parents. Celebrate the excellent job you, your spouse, and your community have done in raising your little human.

8

Not your average goodie bag. As you wrap-up yet another year’s celebration, goodie bags and thank you cards to think about. In thanking your guests, aim to give goodie bags with purpose. Use a reusable bag or container and fill it with a creative items to keep things fun without excess waste or a sugar-overload.

9

Thank you notes. Finally, include kids over age 3 in writing thank you notes. Pick out a simple or themed card and either help them write a message or have them participate, recalling each gift and the kind friend who gave it to your child. While a hand-written thank you note is very thoughtful, you could opt for an e-card to save on paper.

10

Regardless of how “Pinterestworthy” or relaxed and practical your child’s party turns out, remember that you’re giving special recognition to another year of your child’s growth, another year of joy and learning ahead!

W

hen your child uses good manners, other people want to be around them. That’s why birthday parties are opportune events to teach children, not only party etiquette, but a graciousness that goes beyond rules. Whether your child is the host or the guest, you can make teaching children party etiquette fun. Be discreet. For hosts: If possible, you might consider inviting the entire team or class. However, that doesn’t always work out, so in that case, snail mail or e-mail invites, and teach your child not to talk about his party in front of children who aren’t invited. However, be realistic. It’s hard to keep a preschooler or kindergartner from talking about her party. If you start having discussions about being discreet when children are young, they will handle the situation appropriately when they are older. For guests: It is disappointing when your child is not invited to a party, but disappointment provides an opportunity to coach your child through early let downs in life. Explain that he may be invited to the next party when someone else is not. If your child does receive an invitation, teach her to treat the matter with the same delicacy she did as the host. Be clear with boundaries. For hosts: Human beings need boundaries. When we have them we feel more comfortable about the setting that we are in, so be clear about party guidelines in the invitation. Give a time, date and place, and let parents know if the party is a drop-off party or

if they should stay. Let them know if adults will be eating too. Sometimes parents are invited to have the main course and sometimes they are just invited to have cake. You may want to add a note about whether siblings may attend.

TEACH YOUR CHILD PARTY MANNERS

Tips for Hosts and Guests For guests: If it is an at-home party, stay in the areas the host is in. Don’t go into other rooms without permission, and if a restroom is needed, ask which one is for guests. If the party is at an off-site venue, have your child follow all of the rules of the establishment. If the host doesn’t specify guidelines about the party in the invitation, never assume. For instance, don’t eat the food or cake, or bring your entire family (or even extra siblings) if you haven’t asked the host. Be social. For hosts: Meet and greet each child as they arrive. Have the birthday host play with everyone so no one feels left out. Make an effort to include everyone and give everyone a chance at each game. Say “good-bye” and thank

guests for coming when the party is over. For guests: Let the host know that you are there. Make an effort to play with the host and other guests and not form cliques that exclude other party guests. When you are ready to leave, be sure to tell the host “good-bye.” Be giving. For hosts: Teach your child not to expect gifts, but if she does, complement each guest and stay positive about every item, even if it is something that your child already has or is something he doesn’t like. If you have decided to forgo gifts, write “No gifts, please” on the invitation or “Only the favor of your company is requested.” Favor bags aren’t necessary, and some parents may prefer for their children not get sugary candy and small plastic items. Instead, your child could pick out a memorable item to pass out to each guest who attends. For example if it is close to Christmas, your child could give everyone an inexpensive ornament, or if it is a spring party, give packets of flower seeds. A special memento is nice -- my daughter’s favorite favor was a peacock feather she received at a kindergarten party she attended. For guests: Unless the invitation includes the message “No gifts please,” bring a gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive and can be handmade. Giving of your time is thoughtful and many parents will be grateful for this in place of another toy that has to be picked up. Consider making a card to add to the gift with a heartfelt message written by your child. By Janeen Lewis

montereybayparent.com

MONTEREY BAY PARENT • july 2019

Be courteous. For hosts: Thank each and every guest for coming and for bringing a gift, no matter how big or small. The guest (and sometimes a parent!) has taken time out of an evening or weekend to attend a birthday party. Have your child write a thank you note to send to the guest after the party. Use the same discretion when passing out thank you notes as you did with invitations. For guests: Remember to RSVP. Be on time, but if you find are going to be late, call and let the host know. If you have to cancel, let the host know as soon as possible, so that she can plan for enough food and favors.

Five Reasons Parents Choose a “No Gifts, Please” Party 1. Minimalism. Some parents want to teach their children not to get carried away with consumerism. They teach their children to focus more on experiencing fun with friends instead of accumulating possessions. 2. Space. If a family has a small home and multiple children who are young, it could be cramped quarters. Adding more toys that will likely end up in the Goodwill pile seems wasteful. 3. Imagination. Some parents want their children to develop their imaginations with only a few special toys instead of a room full of plastic playthings buried in boxes and drawers that get played with only occasionally or never.

Birthday party manners are a gateway for graciousness as your child grows into a teen and adult. Embrace the opportunity they present to teach your child ways to socialize, and hopefully they will be invited to more special occasions to celebrate with friends as they grow older.

4. Charity. Some parents decide that they would rather guests bring a donation of a canned good or other item for a charity.

Janeen Lewis is a freelance journalist, teacher and mom. She has been published in several parenting publications across the country.

Our culture is a generous one in which it feels unfamiliar not to bring a gift to a party. But there are many valid reasons why the “No gifts, please” party is becoming a trend. Whatever the reason, it is best to respect the wishes of the host.

5. Consideration of other parents. During the preschool to upper elementary years, children will go to many birthday parties. With most children’s birthday gifts costing about $10-$20, costs may start to add up. For single parents or parents who are struggling financially, this can become a hardship for an event that is meant to be a celebration.

Create a Summer Bucket List for Your Family There’s just something about summer that makes people smile. Combat the age-old phrase “I’m booored”, by coming up with a summer bucket list as a family. As with all things kid-related, creating a summer bucket list requires some pre-planning. Make sure to sneak in some educational fun too, like trips to a museum, zoo, or nature center. Once you have a rough draft of what you’d like to contribute to the family summer bucket list, it’s time to get the kids involved. You could make your list together while sitting at a computer or write it on a large poster or white-board. Try to add a variety of locations and activities, in case there is bad weather outside. Be prepared for silly requests, and remember to enjoy the process. Most of these ideas are kid-centered; however, parents should consider some “me time” as well. As much as summer is about free time and relaxing, it should also include something you’ve put on the back burner. Take the time to create a mini list for yourself or for you and your significant other to do together. Being a kid doesn’t last forever– take this idea of a summer bucket list as a reminder to slow down and enjoy the little moments of life.

SUMMER TRAVEL

California National Parks

Did you know that California has more national parks than any other state? When you stop to think about it, the diverse landscape here is not only unique but quite beautiful. Within a few hours, you can explore beaches, mountains, forests, and maybe even deserts. If your family is looking for ideas on what parks to explore this summer or fall, check out this guide on the top things for families in California’s national parks. Pinnacles National Park The newest of all the California national parks is Pinnacles, which was designated a national park in 2013. Pinnacles is the closest national park to Monterey County and a perfect day trip option. Families can get to the western side of the park in about an hour while getting to the eastern side is a bit longer. Note that there is no road connecting the two sections of the park. Pinnacles gets its name from the huge domed spires that were created out of the volcanic activity. This park is one of the least visited in California, which can be great if you don’t enjoy the crowds. Two of the most popular hikes for families are the Moses Spring Trail and Bear Gulch Cave Trail, which are found in the eastern section of the park. This 2.2 mile loop hike provides easy to navigate caves and some pretty nice views of the volcanic structures. Be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight as exploring any section of the cave is quite dark. On the western side, Balconies Cave loop is a 2.4 mile trail that is another option for families to explore some talus caves. Rock climbing is also very popular on this side of the park, as there are a few routes for beginners and advanced climbers alike. Yosemite National Park Yosemite National Park is one of the most iconic parks in the U.S. Located four hours away from Monterey in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite is well known for its’ giant sequoia trees and the granite cliffs of El Capitan and Half Dome. Although it is pretty touristy, Yosemite Valley is where you want to explore first. This is where the world’s largest granite monolith, El Capitan is located, along with the Tunnel View Outlook and many of Yosemite’s most famous waterfalls: Vernal Falls, Bridalveil Falls, and Yosemite Falls. Many of the trails in Yosemite Valley are gentle flat trails that lead directly to top attractions, which are perfect for families. On Southside Drive, you’ll find a couple of short trails leading to Bridalveil Fall and the Sentinel Bridge, which is known for its’ views of Half Dome. Other popular hikes include Tuolumne Meadows and Mariposa Grove, where visitors can walk through the massive sequoia forest. The Merced River, which flows through the valley is a great option for those wanting to go swimming or kayaking. Lake Tenaya is another popular spot for boating as well. A fair warning, this is the most visited national park in California, so be prepared for crowds.

Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park are often overlooked by Yosemite which is only 75 miles south. While they are technically two parks, they are administered jointly. These two parks should not be disregarded though, as they are just as beautiful and family friendly. In Sequoia, you will find the biggest tree in the world, the General Sherman Tree, MONTEREY BAY PARENT • july 2019

and a view of the highest peak in the contiguous United States, Mt. Whitney. Tokopah Falls is a nice, mostly shady, 4 mile hike with granite and forested views that follows the Kaweah River for about half of it. Moro Rock is another great option for families, as it offers panoramic views of the area. At a quarter of a mile, it is considered more of a climb than a hike, but be sure to hold on tight to little ones as it is a steep ascent 300 feet up. In King’s Canyon, you can drive or walk through a fallen giant sequoia at Tunnel Log, and hike through the park’s giant sequoias on Congress Trail or Grant’s Grove. Families will love Zumwalt Meadow as it has rocks for kids to scramble on, a suspension bridge, and a picturesque meadow framed by towering canyon walls. The 1.5 mile hike also has access to portions of the Kings River and is a great spot for a picnic.

geography reflects both the volcanic Cascades and the evergreen Sierra Nevadas. It is also one of the least visited parks in the state due to its remote location. Lassen Peak is named after its’ signature volcano, which is the largest plug dome volcano in the world. Families will enjoy a hike on the Bumpass Hell Trail that will take you through Lassen’s largest hydrothermal area and give some up-close views of the boiling mud pots and superheated turquoise pools. The Sulphur Works area is another prime spot to take a boardwalk hike through some volcanic gas vents known as fumaroles. The other side of Lassen Volcanic National Park contains waterfall hikes and Manzanita Lake, a popular lake for families to enjoy kayaking, swimming, and camping. This area of the park provides visitors with views of Lassen Peak and lush forest hikes that connect to a section of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Lassen Volcanic National Park is a little over five hours from Monterey County. This park is quite unique because it’s

lands off the coast of Southern California. The only way to reach them is via a plane or ferry departing from Ventura, Oxnard or Santa Barbara. The most practical approach for families is usually to take a ferry out of Ventura, as that is where the park’s visitor’s center is located. There are limited restroom facilities, no electricity or services on the island, so be sure to pack plenty of water, lunch, and snacks. While camping is available, everything brought onto the island must leave with you. These islands are known as the Galapagos of North America, as wildlife is plentiful here. Visitors can usually spot whales, dolphins, sea lions, seals, and marine birds frequently while exploring the local islands or even on the ferry. Anacapa, the closest of the islands, is the most popular; next to Santa Cruz, the largest of the islands. While the hiking trails provide a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and the island’s sea cliffs and caves, kayaking and snorkeling are among the best activities to do here. huge series of connected state parks Prarie Creek, Jedediah Smith, and Del Norte. Located almost 8 hours away from Monterey and Santa Cruz, this national park contains a large concentration of the famed, gigantic redwood trees. The most popular hike in the area is Fern Canyon, which was actually a filming location for Jurrasic Park 2. Walking through this densely forested canyon will, in fact, make you feel like you have stepped back in time. Tall Trees Grove is a great family hike, as that is where the tallest of the redwoods reside. To get here though requires a free permit at Kuchel Visitor Center. This helps to keep the number of visitors to a minimum. This area is also a great spot for kayaking, mountain biking, river fishing, and horseback riding. There are several tour companies that take visitors on half-day or full day excursions. Joshua Tree National Park Located just a couple of hours outside of Los Angeles, Joshua Tree National Park is a great place to visit if you’re in Southern California. This park is well known for its’ namesake “Dr. Seuss looking” Joshua trees, which actu-

ally are not even trees, they are yucca plants. This national park has a unique landscape because it is located where the high Mojave desert meets the low Colorado desert. This means that Joshua Tree National Park has areas that are traditionally desert looking, yet it also has mountains and valleys. Visiting this park is not recommended in the summer, as the heat is intense and there is very little shade. If you plan a trip in the cooler months, make sure to include Indian Cove Natural Trail, which is a great place to see the Joshua trees. Another great family hike is the Cholla Cactus Garden Trail where you can see a dense concentration of cactus plants. Joshua Tree National Park also has huge boulders that have become a rock climbers’ paradise. Visitors can scramble some of the smaller boulders on Arch Rock Trail, or watch the rock climbers at Echo Cove. For panoramic views of the valleys and nearby peaks, head to Keys View, which is the highest point at Joshua Tree National Park. Death Valley National Park Death Valley National Park straddles the California/Nevada border and is the hottest, driest and lowest national park

on Earth. It holds the record for the hottest temperature in the world 136F, and is the driest place in North America, seeing an average of 2 inches of rainfall a year. It should not be visited during the months of May-September due to the extreme heat in the valley There are quite a few highlights to be seen in this land of extremes. Zabriskie Point and Golden Canyon are two locations where visitors can see various shades of yellow and orange during the sunrise or sunset. Another must-see is the Badwater area, which is the location of America’s lowest point, - 282 feet below sea level. A drive down Badwater Road lets visitors view the salt flats and puddles that remain from an ancient dried up lake. The Mesquite sand dunes area offers families a chance to see some wildlife, like a coyote or a desert fox. Another unique hike is Ubehebe Crater, where you can walk along the rim of a dried up volcano. While some national parks gain more attention than others, it is easy to see that there is plenty of beauty throughout California. Hopefully, you and your family can adventure to one of these national parks in the near future.

Road Trippin’ with Kids 7 Hacks for Fun, Stress-Free Road Travel

T

he vacation your family has been anxiously anticipating is almost here. The question is, are you prepared for the sibling squabbling, food and drink spills, umpteen rest stops, and being asked a hundred times or more, ‘are we there yet?’ With a little pre-planning, you can drastically reduce the hassles and turn your time on the road into a fun, family experience for all.

1.

Restroom breaks. Immediately before heading out, have everyone go to the bathroom, whether they need to or not. Just before and while on the road, limit beverages, particularly caffeinated ones, to reduce the frequency of restroom stops. When you do have to stop for something, have everyone use the restroom again, and don’t accept anyone’s claim, “I don’t need to go.”

2.

Reduce stops. Strategize where you choose to stop so you can cover all the bases at once. Fuel up, grab food and beverages, use the restroom, and go for a walk or play a game of tag so everyone can stretch and exercise.

3.

Drive through the night. Kids typically sleep through the night on the road. So it’s a great way for kids to feel they’ve reached your destination in the blink-of-an-eye and to reduce MONTEREY BAY PARENT • july 2019

your overall stress. Parents can switch off driving while one another sleeps. Snacks and drinks. Bring along a cooler and a variety of drinks and snacks to reduce pit stops. Breaking up the time with small snacks will also help keep kids pacified. When packing snacks, include some nutritious ones like carrot sticks and apples. Also, keep in mind the messiness of particular types of snacks. To reduce messes, avoid foods that melt, smear, and squish such as chocolate, cupcakes, and yogurt.

of games that don’t require pieces to play. Some ideas to get you started include the license plate game. Have everyone write down the states of the license plates as they spot them. The person with the most states wins. Also, try the “Would you rather?” game. Take turns asking everyone what would be their choice between two gross or unpleasant situations. For example, would you rather be trapped in a closet crawling with hundreds of centipedes or eat a worm?

5.

7.

4.

Plan fun or scenic stops. Do some advance research to find a fun stop along the way, and build it into your vacation. Look for a state or national park, national monument, beach, kiddie fun-land, river walk, or water park.

6.

Car entertainment. Before your trip, visit the library to pick out books, audio books, and music CDs. But don’t let the kids have the items until you’re on the road so your kids will have fresh entertainment. Also, take along some car games, and print a list

Screen time. While limiting kids’ daily screen time is a best practice, consider making an exception for your road trip. Depending on the length of your drive, it can be a challenge to keep kids amused for the duration despite all the other entertainment you bring along. Break up screen time on the road by allowing kids 30-minute cycles of screen time broken up by other activities. summer fun by Tara Tudisco

Staying S

ummertime was always something my friends and I eagerly awaited as kids, but now as a parent, there can sometimes be mixed feelings. It’s great to have your kids home and see them enjoying themselves, but it can also be a considerable undertaking to keep everyone active all summer. Staying active strengthens our immune systems, boosts brainpower, and keeps us physically fit. Keeping active as a family brings you closer together, sets an example to your children to prioritize their health, and even improves social and emotional management skills. To help you stay active this summer, refer back to the following ideas this summer.

to explore from Monterey’s nearly endless options. Head inland for all the rolling hills and inclines at Garland Ranch and Toro Park or take in those outstanding ocean views at Point Lobos and Big Sur. Get more information on each trail at www.seemonterey. com/things-to-do/attractions/hikes/

1.

5.

Park workouts. Our many parks here in Monterey aren’t just for the kiddos. Turn park outings into an outdoor gym by getting a workout in while playing with your kids. Get a game of tag going, do squats between pushes on the swing or bring your jump rope and challenge your older kids to a friendly competition.

2.

Summer Saturday family workouts. Want to exercise with a professional sports trainer? Join Coach Cater at his gym, Alpha Project, in Salinas. ”Working in the fitness industry, I have always prioritized staying in shape and living a healthy lifestyle. Out of necessity, I created a family class on Saturday mornings for my clients, where kids have fun working on athletic fundamentals while the parents train hard under the same roof.” Paul Cater, Owner at ALPHA Project, Salinas, and father to a 16-month-old. http://alphasportscience.com/

3.

Hiking. Even as a regular area hiker, you’ll surely find new trails

22

montereybayparent.com

4.

Head to the beach with your fur family. Many of us look for ways to include our fur-babies in family fun and being active outdoors is usually a great way to do so. We love the sandy, dog-friendly haven that is Carmel Beach. Fill a day with a picnic, walk, and beach play with the entire family. Explore the water at Lover’s Point. Lover’s Point has some of the calmest water conditions in the area, perfect for exploring the ocean with your family. You can rent kayaks, paddle boards and snorkeling gear from Adventure’s by the Sea located on the beach. Guided tours and lessons are offered for a fun family adventure this summer! You can learn more about these options at https:// adventuresbythesea.com/lovers-point/

6.

Pre-dinner family run. Exercising as a family is a total win-win. It might sound simple, but sometimes simple is just what’s needed! Grab your stroller and your crew and enjoy the temperate weather and beautiful scenery just about anywhere in the Monterey Bay, whether outside your front door, on the Coastal Recreation Trail, or through the many paths of Ft. Ord. “When schedules are tight, and dinner/ bath/bedtime is approaching, a family run not only gets our three year old outside and away from his beloved screens (even if he’s just along for the

Active ride), but also gives mom and dad a chance to catch up and do something for ourselves. It’s a good way for us to squeeze in some quick exercise while also setting an example of an active lifestyle for our kiddos: Kattie Stong, Owner of Stroller Strong Moms, Monterey. You and your whole family can join Kattie at Track Attack every Wednesday at about 5:15 PM on the PG Middle School track. Check them out at www.strollerstrongmoms.com/ monterey/

7.

Splash-Splash. The Carmel Valley Community Youth Center, located in one of the warmer parts of Monterey County, is a good option for your summer pool fun. Swimmers have lifeguard-supervised access to the entire pool and the diving board. The pool is open 7 days a week, 12-5 pm and is open on the 4th of July. The daily entry fee is just $8 for non-members. Learn more at www.cvcyc.org/ aquatics.

8.

Go for a bike ride. Bring younger kids along in a chariot and let older kids ride alongside Mom and Dad when you hit the bike trails this summer. We love the Ft. Ord Beach Trail for its stunning scenery and lighter crowds. Or, hop on the Coastal Recreation Trail where you can rent a family-sized surrey and stop along the way for a bite to eat with your crew. Busy moms and dads can take advantage of their kid’s lighter summer schedule and share a favorite activity or try something new together as a family. It doesn’t have to be fancy, whatever you enjoy, take the opportunity to slow down and share in some fun, fit family time. MONTEREY BAY PARENT • july 2019
