Is my favorite person on the
planet–my granddaughter Nina. I adored raising my daughter Alex and never imagined being able to love anyone as much as I love her. Then along came Nina. This little girl holds my heart in her hands. From the moment I found out that my daughter was pregnant, I was waiting for the chance to create this cover.

This will be Nina’s first Halloween. I suggested that she trick or treat as a cover model wearing her orange tutu and carrying the magazine, but her parents nixed it. She doesn’t eat candy yet (not even the piece in her hand on the cover) but I’m sure she’ll enjoy the festivities nonetheless. We’ve been busy compiling our list of Fall Festivals and Halloween events. We did the best we could to include all of the events that had finalized their details at press time. To be sure you have the most up-todate information, please be sure to check MontereyBayParent.com. You’ll find a link on the home page to the Autumn Fun Guide, and we’ll update it as new events come to our attention.

On a more serious note, our Father’s Day columnist Rob Weisskirch has a touching and important article this month about speaking to our children about death. It’s hard to have a conversation with a child about such a difficult subject, but Rob’s advice will make it easier. I hope you have a fun Halloween and a wonderful Autumn!

Featured Military Family: The Millers
military mom by Brandi Jones
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Statistics from the American Cancer Society reveal that, “in 2015 alone, more than a quarter million women were diagnosed with having some form of breast cancer, with more than two thousand men also diagnosed.” Those stats make breast cancer awareness a critical issue. According to a 2009 Walter Reed Army Medical Center study, “women serving in the military have a slightly elevated risk of breast cancer.” To support breast cancer awareness month contact your nearest military instillation to learn more about events or programs that are being offered.

eet the Millers! Originally from the West Coast, Dan, Amy, Evan, and Ella love being closer to family in Monterey. Dan is originally from Los Angeles and Amy is from Vancouver, BC, Canada. They have been married 13 years, have two children, nine-year-old Ella and four-year-old Evan. Dan has been in the military for 19 years as a helicopter pilot. He started his career flying in the Army and now serves as a search and rescue pilot and aircraft maintenance manager in the Coast Guard. The Millers are currently living in Monterey while Dan attends the Naval Post Graduate School to earn an MBA. As a family, they have lived in Fayetteville, NC, New Orleans, LA, Jacksonville, FL, Clearwater, FL, and now Monterey. The Millers will likely be moving to the east coast in early 2020. Amy shared that the family has “really enjoyed the beautiful weather in Monterey and exploring the outdoors.” Dan is an avid surfer and can be found at Asilomar Beach before school. Amy loves walking the Monterey Rec Trail and Carmel Beach in addition to attending yoga. As a family, the Millers have enjoyed Lovers Point, Garrapata State Park, Point Lobos, Monterey Bay Aquarium and camping, especially in Big Sur and Lake Tahoe! When asked what they will miss the most about Monterey the Miller’s said, “the outdoor adventures in the cooler climate, attending Shoreline Community Church and Monterey Bay Christian School.”

In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized official recognition of October 13 as the birthday of the U.S. Navy. The Monterey Navy Ball Committee will host a celebration of the Navy’s birthday in Seaside on October 5 at the annual Monterey Navy Ball. This year’s theme is “No Higher Honor.” The Monterey Road Child Development Center will provide childcare for the event. Contact CDC at (831) 583-1050 for additional information and to reseerve a space.
Day of the Deployed Saturday October, 26 is recognized as the Day Of The Deployed. Day of the Deployed pays tribute to the commitment of deployed troops to our community as well as their work to protect our freedoms. To bring awareness to deployed troops you could send a care package, prepare a meal for the family of a deployed service member, deliver groceries, or recognize their sacrifice personally.
Course for Families On October 16 at 6 pm-7:30 pm, The Arm Community Center is hosting a course for military families titled, “Protecting Your Children From The Real World,” based on the book, “Protecting The Gift Keeping Children And Teenagers Safe (and parents sane),” by Gavin DeBecker. Those who are interested should contact the Presidio Family MWR at (831) 242-5506.

Talking to children about death When children experience a loss, they may be unsure of their own feelings and not fully understand the feelings of those around them. Seeing their parents being vulnerable can help children learn to deal with their own grief.
R
ecently, I had a friend die. She was part of a group of people with whom I played Scrabble every other week for the last 14 years. We played non-competitively, helped one another play the best words, and needled each other along the way. My friend came to Thanksgiving a few times, attended my wedding, and was a happy recipient of my wife’s homemade jam and rye bread. My friend had been ill and had rapidly taken a turn for the worse. When I received the news, I began to cry. And, audibly. My daughter has not seen me sad and was trying to understand. My wife and I were explaining that Daddy is sad because his friend died. My daughter, in her empathic way, said, “Here, Dad. Dry your tears,” handing me tissues and rubbing my back. “I’m sad when I miss my friends too.” Then, she proceeded to ask, “What happened to your friend?” I then explained that she was sick and had recently gotten worse. I was then trying to pull myself together to transport her to school. In the car, the conversation about what happened continued. I said that my friend, Kristin, was sick and that she got worse. She asked, “What did she have?” I told her she had cancer that had spread and made her body stop working well. She seemed satisfied enough at this answer. She then said that she would miss her friend if she died. She also said she would cry a lot if Daddy or Mommy died. This depth of understanding seemed pretty pro-

found for an almost six-year-old. I could have hidden my feelings of loss, but I did not want to shield my daughter from seeing me sad. She is fortunate that she has not had to deal with the loss of a grandparent and even has been able to have a relationship with her great-grandmother, who is 94. But, I know that death is inevitable, and she will face losses all too soon. For now, I know that she is learning how to respond from me. I am doing my best, but grief comes in waves. Experts recommend answering children’s questions about death directly and age-appropriately. They say to avoid euphemisms like “passed away” or, in the case of a pet, “put to sleep” for young children because those expressions confuse them. For most kids, death is a remote event, and, when it occurs, they may not understand how a loved one, including a pet, is gone. At the same time, they may not understand the expression of emotions in others around them when death does occur. Outward, loud sobbing from adults is unusual for children to see and may be scary or shocking for children. When children experience a loss, they may be unsure of their feelings or not fully understand the feelings of those around them who mourn differently from them. As a dad, my daughter has not seen me express sadness. She has seen me mad, frustrated, annoyed, happy, silly, sleepy, funny, and sick but not sad. For fathers of sons, experts agree that men show-

ing a broad range of emotions helps boys better regulate emotions–that is, boys learn that all emotions are okay to be expressed. They do not have to suppress some (like sadness) and only show others (like anger). Dads, in particular, demonstrate to boys the range of emotions that can be expressed. My daughter has asked questions before about death. She had found a picture of my previous dog and asked what happened to her. I responded that she got old and died. She then asked, “How did she die?” I told her, not knowing I shouldn’t, that she was suffering, and I took her to the vet and had her put to sleep. Then, in that insatiable, inquisitive tone that young children use, she said, “But, how did she die?” I then explained that the vet gave her an injection to relax her first and so she wouldn’t feel any pain and then gave her a second shot to stop her heart. Later, she died. My daughter then asked, “Were you sad?” And, I told her, “Yes, I was very sad. She was my dog for a long time.” She then said that she would be sad if Roshi (our current dog) died. Then, satisfied with the answers, she moved on to wanting to play “I Spy” in the car. It is easy to forget that kids are still trying to figure out how the world works. Like her father, she is seeing me be vulnerable and expressing my feelings differently than she sees typically. But, I think she is also learning about communicating feelings, grief, and moving through adversity. These are lessons I can provide of how to cope with life events. I also like to think that I am helping her learn the skills so that when she is faced with the loss of a loved one, or, really, any setback, she will mourn as needed, and then pick herself up and plow forward to a new adventure. Neighborhood Halloween Contests from Ghostly Goodies to Scary Pumpkins
A
ing neighbors to help you make up fun ‘Scariest House’ and other signs. Then post them in the yards of the winning homes.
Craziest costume – Pass out fliers inviting all the neighborhood kids to meet at your house an hour before trick-or-treating begins. Give everyone a name tag when they arrive. Then each child and adult can fill out a voting slip. Include best costume, scariest, funniest, most creative, and more. Hand out a special prize to the winners of each category. And don’t forget a small consolation prize for all children who participate.
Funniest carved pumpkin – Ask the neighborhood to join you in a carved pumpkin contest. You can schedule a date and time when everyone will meet with their pumpkins at your home or a neighborhood park. Suggest everyone who participates pitch in $2 per pumpkin for a jackpot. To keep it fair, allow only one pumpkin per child. Prepare numbered cards in advance so each pumpkin will have it’s own number. Then have everyone fill out a voting slip. The carver of the winning pumpkin gets the jackpot. You could also pass out small goody bags for all the kids who participate.
re you looking for some fun new ways to celebrate Halloween with your kids this year? How about a neighborhood contest? Costume contests are just one of the many options to get everyone in the spirit. So read on to see if one of these wicked ideas grabs you.
Most ghoulish yard – Invite everyone in the neighborhood to join in a decorating contest. You could have a few categories such as scariest, cutest, silliest, and best overall. Set a decorating deadline for October 21st. Provide delivery instructions on the flier so every house in the neighborhood can vote for the addresses they like best. Also, mention that neighbors should view all the houses after Oct. 21 and deliver their votes to you by a specified date. Ask some of the participat-

Funnest Halloween game – Hand out fliers to everyone in the neighborhood or on your street to hold a Halloween game day. Ask each participating house to set up a Halloween kids game in their front yard. Participating houses can give out small prizes such as stickers or treats to each kid who plays their game. Kids can wander the neighborhood playing the games for the afternoon. When they’re done, have each child fill out a ballot for the funnest Halloween game. Then post a fun chilling homemade sign in the yard
of the winner. Scariest scarecrow – Ask your neighbors to participate in a scariest scarecrow contest. To keep the scarecrows safe until voting, set a specific day when the scarecrows should be displayed in everyone’s yards. Have everyone in the neighborhood, whether they participate by making a scarecrow or not, hand-deliver their vote to you by the end of the day that the scarecrows are set out. Then deliver a fun Halloweenish homemade yard sign to the winning home. Creepiest food – Hold a simple neighborhood potluck Halloween party. Each participating family should be instructed to bring a Halloween themed food or dessert. Place a numbered card next to each dish. Then have everyone fill out a ballot for the cutest, grossest, funniest, and scariest food. Once the winners are announced, take photos of the families next to their creepy food. Then everyone can dig in and eat the yummy dishes and treats. DECORATIONS
Happy
Instead of buying decorations made in China that eat up batteries, consider strategically placing some hay bales in your yard or on your deck or front porch. Chrysanthemums, gourds, colorful corn, ghosts made of sheets stuffed with batting and scarecrows stuffed with hay (use some old clothes) are cheap and green choices. Nontoxic window paints are fun for kids to use on windows and doors. There are all kinds of Halloween crafts you can make out of materials you have around the house that can be saved for next year or recycled later. Crafts like bottle cap pumpkin magnets, tin can bat treat holders and an egg carton animal nose mask can also be a great activity at your Halloween party (see below). Check out http://familycrafts. about.com/od/halloween/tp/RecycledHalloween-Crafts-For-Kids.htm for instructions and more craft ideas.

TRICK OR TREATING
Between costumes, candy holders, treat wrappers and plastic decorations, Halloween can quickly become a landfill’s worst nightmare. Multiply that by the number of kids you have and you have quite a bit of wasted junk on your conscience. Fortunately, just about anything you do can be done in a more ecologically responsible way, and it’s easy! Check out my six tips to green your Halloween — and save some serious cash (paper green!) in the process.
Grab that rechargeable or LED shake flashlight and head out the door. Wait! Don’t forget the decorated cloth bag you can reuse next year. An even cheaper route (and it’s still space- and eco-friendly) is to go retro and use a pillowcase or go modern and use a cloth shopping bag. Pick up trash as you follow your trick-or-treaters and keep it in a separate bag or in the bottom of the stroller if you’re taking littles along, too.

3.
COSTUMES
Check out information local to your area about National Costume Swap Day, which is always the second Saturday in October. The great idea is that your kids trade costumes with friends instead of buying new ones. Other ideas to go green and save green: recycle among your own family members; use an old karate or ballet outfit; break out the princess dress-up clothes. Google “Halloween costumes you can make at home for cheap” and start surfing. And don’t forget to check thrift stores and garage sales all year.

TREATS
Just so we’re clear, I’m not of the camp that lumps eco-friendly with sugar-free. And even if you’re handing out healthy Halloween treats, chances are you’re still sending individually wrapped stuff into the world (oh, the trash all over my neighborhood!). Instead of doing that, consider handing out something that can be either useful or recycled. Ideas include pencils, erasers, quarters, crayons, juice boxes (recyclable cardboard), cool bandages, bookmarks or seed packets (edible flowers, herbs, etc.).
Speaking of decorations, pumpkins are the best decoration out there, and you can even grow your own if you have the space. Just toss a bunch of seeds in a large garden area and you’ll have freebies for next year. Otherwise, take an educational trip to a local pumpkin patch (see page 12 of this issue for area pumpkin patches) so you support local farmers. Make sure you toast some pumpkin seeds (cinnamon sugar seeds rock!) and make a pie with the rest. You can also purchase realistic fake pumpkins that can be used year after year.
6.
PARTIES
After you send out an Evite to the parents, start planning your green Halloween party. Instead of setting out individually wrapped treats, put carrots, orange slices and pretzels in bowls. Make sugar cookies in advance in cool Halloween shapes (bats, pumpkins, ghosts) and have the kids frost and decorate them with orange and black frosting. Throw some newspaper on the table, break out the nontoxic paints, and decorate some pumpkins. Kerrie McLoughlin is a freelance writer who covers a variety of topics of interest to parents.
