Time To Get Creative! In my car, I can sing like Janis Joplin. Of course, that’s the only place I can sing like Janis. In the rest of my life, I wouldn’t dream of inflicting my voice on those around me. While I love listening to music, I’ve never had much of a knack for creating it. But that doesn’t stop me from finding ways to be creative! For me, my creativity is all about visual expression. I love photography, make pottery, have dabbled in watercolor and oil painting, love to sketch, and make jewelry.

Being creative is vitally important to me, and I try to find time for it every day. Usually, that’s in the form of looking for photo opportunities while I take my daily walk. My habit started about five years ago when my regular hour-long beach walks began to get a little boring. I challenged myself to use the time to improve my photography skills, and it’s become a cherished routine. I post the photos on my personal Instagram account, but I’ve also started to post some on the Monterey Bay Parent Instagram. No matter where I am, I walk, and when I walk, I take photos. It keeps me present, helps me exercise my creativity, and reminds me daily that I am fortunate to live in such a beautiful place and to travel to exciting destinations! This month we’re celebrating the arts. Art, dance, music, theatre–all that creative stuff that makes the world a better place. Creativity is a muscle that needs exercising and developing, and you can start with children from a very young age to help them express themselves and appreciate the artistic expressions of others. One of the best ways is to set an example. Let your children hear you singing in the car (go, Janis!) or see you trying a new creative hobby. Show them how creating a meal, decorating a room, or choosing clothing can be creative. If you make a habit of it, they will, too. For inspiration, check out our articles on art outings (page 14), theatre (page 16), and music (page 18). For more ideas on creative outlets for kids, be sure to join our Facebook group. We have 2600+ members who share great info on all sorts of topics. You’ll find us at www.facebook.com/MontereyBayParent/. This month we have a new column: Grandparents’ Corner with Gail Root. Gail is a well-known and respected local parenting figure, and she’s bringing her expertise to us monthly in her new column. Welcome! Allison Chance has taken over the Military Mom column with this issue. Allison has written many wonderful articles for MBP, and it’s great to have her onboard for Military Mom. Our first MM columnist, Katie Begley, recently made a major move with her family and while we’re sorry to see her go, we’re also happy that she’s settled into her new, more permanent home on the east coast. Have a wonderful September!

Arts Resources For Your Military Family

T

he long, lazy days of summer are over, and school is officially back in session. I hope you all are settling back into a routine. I’m excited to be taking over the Military Mom Column for Monterey Bay Parent. My name is Allison Chance, and I am a Navy wife and mom to two children. Our military adventure has taken us to Florida, Hawaii, and CA thus far. We have been in Monterey for a little over a year now, while my husband studies at Naval Postgraduate School. We have enjoyed exploring the area and have visiting several spots on the west coast. I look forward to sharing upcoming events and relevant topics to military life in Monterey. With our September issue

featuring the Arts, I wanted to highlight some upcoming local events that are perfect for your family. One of my favorite experiences in the area has been attending a play at the Pacific Repertory Theatre’s Outdoor Forest Theater. This month, The Little Mermaid will take the stage through September 23. Tickets are available online or at their box office in Carmel at Monte Verde St. between 8th & 9th Aves. They also offer a discounted rate for the military. Pack a picnic and enjoy a beautiful evening under the stars. Arrive early to grab your seat as the theater features open seating. They also have snacks and beverages for sale on-site. Also offering discounted rates

for the military is Ariel Theatrical, located in Salinas. Their next show debuts in October and will be School House Rock Live. Ariel Theatrical also offers terrific summer programs and is dedicated to serving the community and has been doing so for over 30 years. Rounding out their 2018 season will be the Three Piggy Opera and the Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Looking to get into dance? NSA Monterey is hosting ballroom dancing lessons every Thursday from September 6-27 at 5 pm. The classes are free and located in the Barbara McNitt Ballroom and El Prado Dining Room located in

the Historic Del Monte Hotel. A dance partner is not required to attend. For more information, visit NSA Monterey Community Recreation on Facebook. Is your little one looking to dance, too? La Mesa Tech Connection offers ballet on a monthly basis for just $50 per month. This is perfect for the family who just arrived and missed other dance studio registrations or for families who want to try dance out. Classes are on Tuesdays. 3-4-year-old’s at 2:30-3: 15 pm, 5-6-yearold’s from 3:15-4: 00 pm and seven years old and up are from 4:00-4: 45 pm. Take advantage of this opportunity for your tiny dancer to explore the art of dance. My daughter has done several ballet classes and has enjoyed them. Another fun event to mark your calendar for is the 3K Color Run hosted by Navy Fitness Monterey on Saturday, September 15. Registration starts at 12:30 pm at the La Mesa Tech Connection and the run will kick off at 2:00 pm. The run is FREE and includes a t-shirt and sunglasses. This is fun for the whole family and strollers are welcome. My family attended last year, and we had a blast. If you are looking for something fun to do over the Labor Day Weekend, don’t forget about the Monterey County Fair, which will run until Monday, September 3. grandparents’ corner

“Perfect love sometimes does not come until the first grandchild.” – Welsh proverb

Grandparenting A Special Kind of Love!

I

’ve discovered the joys of grandparenting! I am the grandmother of four beautiful children under the age of seven. I’ve heard grandparents say they wish they could have jumped right in and skipped the parenting part and I understand entirely. I will be covering all sorts of questions grandparents may have in the months to come in Monterey Bay Parent Magazine’s new grandparenting column: “Grandparents’ Corner.” Here are just a few topics that we’ll be covering over the coming months: Grandma, Nana, Mimi, Or . . . ? One of the first things we think about when we hear the news about our grandchild-to-be is: “what do I want to be called?” You can do a little research and find lists of possibilities to see if one strikes your fancy. Pick your name, share it with the child’s parents and start to use it Or, you can wait until the first grandchild chooses your name. In my case, when my first grandson began to talk, he called me “Nama,” so that has remained my (grandparent) name.

Grandparenting Style Family dynamics are often changed and perhaps challenged with the addition of little ones. Did you know research has suggested there are several styles of grandparenting? One author suggests formal, surrogate parent, fun seeker, resource, distant and safe haven. You can learn more about these at www.sarayogev.com/grandparenting-styles/ Amount of Contact Have you considered how you want to relate to your children and grandchildren? Do you live close and wish to be part of their daily or weekly lives? Are you interested in being available for occasional or fulltime care? If you do provide care while parents are working will you be paid? Changes in Parenting Norms Parenting has changed since you had a newborn. Some of the “new” things parents today consider, such as the position the baby sleeps in, car seat choices and laws, what foods (and when) to feed the baby can be very different than when you had a baby. It’s important to educate yourself on changes in baby care and discuss all of the options with the child’s parents.

At some point, everything from guidelines for screen time, the positive discipline vs. punishment issue, and what toys they want their child to have will come up. Boundaries Finally, what boundaries are appropriate for us, as grandparents? When should we give our opinion and when should we keep our mouth shut? To get you started on suggested reading, check out “The Modern Grandparent’s Handbook, The Ultimate Guide to the New Rules of Grandparenting” by Dr. Georgia Witkin. I offer Grandparenting 101 (birth to pre-school issues) and 102 (the school-age child) at the Monterey Youth Museum. If you have questions, please email me at mamaroot@gmail.com, and I will explore them here with you. Car Seat Safety

Child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers. Read on for safety and car seat installation tips!

S

eat belts and child safety seats are the most effective way to protect children against serious injuries and deaths in motor vehicle crashes. There is no disputing that fact. Child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers. Current CA law states that: Children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear-facing car seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds OR is 40 or more inches tall. The child shall be secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat. (CA Vehicle Code Section 27360.) • Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat. • Children who are 8 years of age OR have reached 4’9” in height may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be secured by a safety belt. • Passengers who are 16 years of age and over are subject to CA’s seat belt law. Unfortunately, 3 out of 4 child car seats are installed incorrectly. We want Monterey Bay Parent readers and their children to be safe when riding in vehicles so we asked Allana Pinkerton, Certified CPST and Global Safety Advocate

for diono to give us her best safety and car seat installation tips. General Safety and Car Seat Installation Tips 1. Read the manuals for the car seat and vehicle. Pay close attention to warnings, expiration dates and registration procedures. 2. Watch car seat manufacturer installation videos on their website. Always use a reputable source to get more information on installations. 3. Make sure the car seat can be installed with the LATCH system and seat belt individually. Many car seats have weight limitations on the LATCH system and you will need to install with the seat belt eventually. 4. Place seat belt or LATCH strap through the proper belt path. There is only one for infant car seats and two for convertible car seats. Convertibles have a rear-facing and a forwardfacing belt path. Forwardfacing Combination seats have a forward-facing belt path only. 5. Be sure seat belt is in locked mode if using vehicle belt. The seat belt will most likely lock at the retractor or at the latch plate. 6. Pull LATCH or seat belt webbing tight. 7. Check for tight fit at the belt

path, only. Car seat should move less than one inch in either direction. Securing Child in the Car Seat 1. Place harness strap in the correct position. Harness straps for a rear-facing child should be placed at the shoulders or coming from just below. Forward-facing is at or just above the shoulders. 2. Pull the harness straps snug and comfortable so you cannot pinch the webbing when grasping at the collar bone. The straps should lay flat on the child and not be twisted. Harness straps should be comfortably snug. 3. The chest clip is a positioning device to help keep the straps on the child’s shoulders. Place the chest clip at arm pit level. 4. If you are using an infant car seat, check the manual for the correct position of the carrier handle when traveling in the car. General Safety Tips 1. Choose a car seat that fits your child and vehicle correctly. Choose a seat you will use correctly every ride. 2. We are all living more distracted lives these days. Too many children are unintentionally

being left in hot cars. It can happen to anyone. Keep your purse or phone on the floor in the back seat. When you reach your destination you are more likely to remember to get those items which will help you keep an eye on baby before you lock the door. 3. Check the car seat installation before every ride. Just give it a tug at the belt path to be sure it is still secured to the seat belt or with the lower anchors. 4. Don’t transition children too soon. Keep them rear-facing as long as possible. Keep them in a 5 point harness and do not skip booster stage for older children. Some children do not fit in the adult seat belt until age 12. 5. Set a good example for your kids and make sure all passengers are properly buckled so they stay safe as well. 6. Register the car seat so you can be notified in case or any recalls.

7. Do not use the car seat if it has been in a severe crash. 8. Do not buy a used car seat unless you know the history and how it was stored. 9. Follow the instruction manual for proper washing instructions. Never soak harness straps or use abrasive cleaners on any part of the car seat. To be sure that your seat belt is correctly installed, nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians at AAA can help make sure your seat is properly installed with a car seat inspection at their Salinas and Monterey locations. his time of year, the few weeks before we say goodbye to summer and step into fall is my ultimate favorite! The air is warm in the day and crisp and cool at dusk. Usually, I would fill those end of summer weekends with outdoor events. This year my family and I plan on spending time exploring one of my passions, art! Luckily, we live in an area where art possibilities are as plentiful as our gorgeous autumn weather. Here are some fun art outings for children (and adults) of any age! Monterey Mini Makers 4590 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel 805-450-9995 www.montereyminimakers.com Monterey Mini Makers was created to provide art education and sensory exploration experiences for toddlers and preschool age children on the Monterey Peninsula. are for children ages 18 months to 6 years to enjoy with their caregivers. Classes are arranged in multiweek sessions. This allows for indepth exploration into projects and ongoing processing. Session prices include all classes, one hour each week for multiple continuous weeks, and all materials. Drop-ins are available when space allows for $20. Please contact them before class to make sure that they have space in the class and can get materials prepared for your child ahead of time. Class days and times vary. Check the website for updated information and details on how to register. Monterey Museum of ArtPacific Street 559 Pacific Street, Monterey 831-372-5477 www.montereyart.org

Located across from historic Colton Hall in Old Monterey, the Museum features galleries devoted to exhibitions of American and early CA painting, photography and modern art. The Museum store includes creative and unique cards, jewelry, and gifts by local artists. Also, the store carries a selection of books of regional interest. Wheelchair and stroller access are available at the sculpture park entrance located between Pacific and Calle Principal Streets. This museum is unique because of the many activities they offer kids and families all year round. There are mini art camps on select Saturdays for children ages 6-12. Kids will enjoy two hours of hands-on art and get to take home everything they make. Space is limited to 15 students per class, so pre-registration is suggested. Check Nicole Amaral their website for by upcoming camps.

The Museum is open daily from 11-5pm; closed on Wednesday (aside from art classes); closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Admission is $10, Students & Active Military w/ID, 18 years and under are free, members are free, NARM and AAM Members are free, and bicyclists receive 50% off on Thursdays when they show a helmet. Monterey Museum of ArtLa Mirada 720 Via Mirada, Monterey 831-372-3689 www.montereyart.org Contemporary galleries enhance the old-world elegance and rose gardens of this stunning, historic estate. Located in one of Monterey’s oldest neighborhoods, La Mirada began as a modest stone adobe during the Mexican period. It was later remodeled to become an elegant home where the famous stars of silent film were entertained. In 1994, the gallery wing was added to accommodate wonderful exhibitions that are changed out

Acting Out Five Skills That Children Develop From Participating in Theatre

S

ome children who attend acting classes and get involved in theatre productions are genuinely interested in a professional career as an actor. But most are there for a variety of other benefits. Parents we spoke with mentioned everything from meeting new friends to overcoming shyness as two popular reasons why they chose to enroll their children in acting lessons. For Salinas parent Sarah McCabe, living within walking distance to the theatre when they were toddlers was the incentive to get involved. Sarah says: “I would take them frequently to see plays. My oldest daughter, Sophie, was hooked. She loved the costumes, the actors, the stage. As soon as she was old enough (age 5), we signed her up to be in her first play. My middle daughter followed in her footsteps. Now we have two younger children who’ve watched all of the performances that their sisters are in, and are already asking to “do shows”. Attending drama classes and workshops can benefit almost any child. Whether your kid is the

outgoing talkative student eager to jump on stage or the introverted daydreamer who’d rather sit in the back and go unnoticed, theatre has a place for everyone. And that’s what makes it so special. Here are five skills that can be enhanced by participating in theatre.

instance, there are usually actors of different ages. It’s a great way for younger children to find mentors to look up to and learn from and for older children to develop patience and leadership skills from working with the younger actors.

Enhanced creativity and self expression Theatre provides an outlet for making creative choices and interpreting the material in expressive ways. Whether it’s through the result of a mistake during a performance or a blunder during an improvisational exercise, theatre teaches children to think on their feet and approach tasks from different angles.

Public Speaking Skills Through acting classes, children become more confident speaking in front of the other paerticipants as well as their teachers. As they gain self-confidence they also gain selfesteem. Acting classes also focus on articulation, timing and vocal projection—all things that can improve public speaking skills. Drama enhances verbal and nonverbal expression of ideas. It improves voice projection, articulation, fluency of language, and persuasive speech.

Exposure to people of all ages and backgrounds Theatre tends to attract participants of all ages and interests. It’s a great way for children to meet children they might otherwise not interact with. When a child is selected to participate in production, for

Self-Confidence The high pressure situations that come along with performing help even shy children learn to overcome their self consciousness. Taking risks in class and performing for an audience teach students to trust their ideas and abilities. This

confidence carries over to nearly every aspect of their future. The social interaction and risk taking in drama develop trust in self, others, and the process. Caryl Navarro’s eight year old daughter Caleah has been involved with two productions at ARIEL. According to Navarro: “If your child shows any interests in singing, dancing and playing make believe, attend a theatre camp, or class but is also a little shy or has stage fright, I say, enroll them in a theatre class/ camp. It is really interesting to see them bloom on stage. They gain so much confidence.” Experience working as a team Children in acting groups learn to take direction. They also learn to collaborate during acting classes, in rehearsals, and during performances. Students are continually called upon to share ideas, give and receive feedback, and support their fellow actors and the stage personnel. They learn that to give their best performance they need the support of their fellow actors and their director. As in any team activity, each child learns that while they are respondible for their own performance, they also must depend on the work of their teammates. Being a good team player and knowing the importance of every other member, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant their duty or part might be is a life skill that children will utilize throughout their lives. Sarah McCabe says that the

biggest lesson her children have learned is that performances aren’t really the focus. “The focus is on character-building, hard work, and making the world a better place... the performance is just the vehicle.” If you have a child with a flair for the dramatic, participating in theatre might just be the ticket for not only a lot of fun but some solid benefits that will last them a lifetime. Monterey County children can participate in theatre through the following organizations: The A.C.T. (After-School Children’s Theatre) Program at Paper Wing Theatre 320 Hoffman Ave, Monterey, 93940 831-905-5684 www.PaperWing.com Twice a year, in early spring and summer, the group features programs and plays for children and families. ARIEL Theatrical P.O. Box 1268, Salinas, CA 93902 831-775-0976 www.arieltheatrical.org Children ages 5-19, may register to participate in performance-based productions that include rehearsals in singing, dancing, and acting. ARIEL also offers day-time theatre classes for home-schooled children in grades K-12 and summer camps. Rehearsals and performances take place at The Karen Wilson Children’s Theatre, 320 Main Street, in Salinas.

Music Lessons?

by Jan Pierce

Your Child’s Brain Will Thank You

A

re you interested in building your child’s brain power? Over the last decade brain research has determined that children who take music lessons show improved brain development with increased memory capacity. The studies also show higher general intelligence in skills related to language and reading, mathematics and overall IQ scores. Dr. Peter Simon, President of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada says, “Music education is a powerful tool for attaining your child’s full intellectual, social and creative potential.” The test results are enough to make you a believer. Even in the best of times it may be difficult to find funds for extras such as music lessons. But the facts concerning the benefits of regular music instruction on your child’s brain development make a

very strong argument for including them. Further, the earlier you begin exposing your child to music, the better the results will be. There’s no magic here. Neuroscientists have teamed with educators to test young children’s brain development and have made remarkable discoveries. Music study requires precision in auditory (hearing) processes, multi-tasking, such as hearing and reading notes simultaneously, and focused attention to the task. Not only do these activities aid in earlier, stronger brain development, but decades later adults who studied music show quicker and more accurate responses to sound patterns. What does this mean? MRI’s and other imaging devices show when a child’s brain is exposed to regular sessions of music study, it builds increased white matter made

up of nerve fibers which serve as connectors between motor regions of the right and left hemispheres of the brain. In other words, the brain builds a structure on which new skills can grow, and that structure lasts a lifetime. THE BENEFITS • Music education can improve speech and reading ability. Musically trained children have shown increased ability in phonological skills, (identifying where syllables and words begin and end) which aid in learning one’s own language and new ones. • Music education can improve basic memory skills. Studies show musically trained individuals develop better working memories. A working memory allows us to remember things even while our minds are busy with

(The Royal Conservatory of Music, The Benefits of Music Education, Your Child’s Development: Music Study May Be the Best Tool.) another task—a crucial skill for problem solving in math and comprehension in reading. • Music exposure builds creativity, empathy and social awareness. Neuroscientists have found increased communication between the two sides of the brain in musically trained children, believed to increase creativity. Tests show participating in collaborative music-making increases empathy for others. This may be due to increased verbal intelligence by which a child picks up nuances of speech and the emotions behind them. Making music requires cooperation and focused attention which are valuable skills in personal relationships.

• A study done in 2007 showed increased test scores for students having had quality music instruction. Whether music exposure was received in the home, in a group or individual settings, a quality experience with music instruction was key to higher test scores in English and Math. (Christopher Johnson, Professor of Music, University of Kansas.) • Music training is beginning to show increased health and well-being into old age. Studies are emerging which show music training provides improved cognitive function all through life. Music therapy is helpful to those recovering from strokes, those who stutter or have other neurological problems and those with autism and Parkinson’s disease. It is believed to help delay the onset of dementia. Parents, the resources and efforts expended in providing musical training for your young children will deliver lifelong benefits. That training leads to lasting, positive brain changes. It increases capacity to perform tasks requiring sustained attention, careful listening and engaged reading. Finally, music training builds creativity, encourages empathy for others and builds a healthy sense of self-confidence.
