from the publisher… We’re all about the arts “The artist is not a special kind of person; rather each person is a special kind of artist.” – Ananda Coomaraswamy

I love this quote because it sums up my feelings about art and creativity, namely that art is within each of us, and we have to find it and release it into the world. I also believe that our responsibility as parents is to give our children the room and the tools to find art within themselves. That doesn’t mean each of us will create subjectively great art or that we will all become artists. Your art may be a perfectly composed meal, a knack for decorating a room, or the skill to knit a beautiful sweater. Art doesn’t have to fit a narrow definition; when you let your creativity have free reign, it can take many different forms. And, what a better gift to give our children than room to find their creativity? If you supply the tools and refrain from judgment, they’ll use them. That’s what this issue is all about! If a weekend getaway is on the horizon, may I suggest Paso Robles so that you can visit Sensorio? It’s a stunning light installation that is quite simply magical. We have an article about it on page 9. Plus, we’re giving away Sensorio tickets on our website!

If dance is in your future, we have two articles on the topic. First up, advice on why dance is an excellent option for little ones plus tips on choosing the right studio. Once you’re involved, we have more suggestions, this time on how to be a good dance mom. Check that article out on page 16. Finally, we wrap up the arts with an article on why it’s time for a professional photo of your family and our suggestions on local photographers who we know to be up to the challenge of creating a special keepsake. September is a great time to think about creativity and the arts. And, not just for the kids! How about you, mom and dad–maybe a pottery class, a stab at writing poetry, or time for your guitar should be added to YOUR schedule? Have a wonderful September!

September Dates To Remember

H

ello Monterey! September is here, and it brings many holidays, observances, and events. September is Nation Suicide Prevention Month. This is a time to reflect on the pressing emergency that both veteran and the active-duty military is facing. According to the 2016 report of the Office of Suicide Prevention, “about 20 veterans commit suicide per day.” For veterans and their family members, the Veteran’s Crisis Line is a valuable resource, if you know someone who is struggling with suicidal thoughts call this number 1-800-273-8255. The Veteran’s Crisis Line is free and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Labor Day is a great holiday to spend exploring Monterey County beaches. Whether it’s the white sandy beaches of Carmel, the rocky shores of Pebble Beach or the purple sands of Pfeiffer State Beach in Big Sur, there is much to see and do! While you’re out exploring don’t forget to make a trip to the Monterey County Fair! Live music, rides, games and more, ThursdayMonday advanced tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children.

Patriot Day is a time to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. For those of us who are old enough to remember, it’s a day we will never forget. For some of our veterans, the terrorist attacks of September 11 were the reason why they volunteered to serve. Volunteer in our community and spread kindness. Citizenship Day and Constitution Day are observed September 1723. According to the Library of Congress’s official site, these observances were created to both commemorate the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787, and “recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.” Such an excellent opportunity for parents, especially those who are serving to share with their children the oath they took, and why the Constitution is so important. Also, a perfect time to explore the Monterey Public Library for books about citizenship and civic responsibilities. The Library is open seven days a week call 831-646-3933 for times. September 20 is POW/ MIA Recognition Day, a time to remember the sacrifices of prisoners of war and those service members who are missing in action. According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency’s official site, “more than 83,000 service members are missing from conflicts from

World War Two to the present time.” Let’s take the time to reflect on those who were held captive, and those who didn’t make it home in service to our country. Gold Star Mother’s Day will be observed on September 29. The Army states that Gold Star Mother Day is intended to “recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter in the service of the US Armed Forces.” I would encourage Americans to display the flag on this day as a sign of gratitude and respect for these families. There are also some great local events for military families being held aboard the Presidio of Monterey this month starting with, “Couple’s Connection; Growing with Children” September 4, located in the Army Community Service main office. The Army Community Service will also host “8 Stages of Parenthood,” on September 18 at 6 pm, as well as a Knitting Club Saturday, September 14 from 1-3 pm. These programs have proven beneficial for so many military families, and I hope you can attend. I also want to wish the United States Air Force a Happy Birthday as they celebrate their 71st birthday on September 18, 2019. Brandi Jones is a graduate of Liberty University in Virginia. Brandi is a marine wife and mother to Harmony 14 and Jett 12 and is a teacher in the Transitional Kindergarten at Monterey Bay Christian School.

A Father’s Role in Protecting His Family

S

tatistically, our communities are safer for families than they havebeen in recent history. It may not seem that way given the news media, but the FBI reports that there is less violent crime, gun crime, and other crimes than in the last 50 years. The shootings at the Gilroy Garlic Festival stand out because of our geographical proximity to Gilroy and because it is precisely the kind of event our family attends, and my daughter is the same age as the youngest victim. It could have been her. I cannot imagine the devastating loss for the parents and families of the victims. Like many of you, the latest mass shootings have forced me to push away negative and paranoid thoughts that bubble up when I drop my kid off at camp, school, or religious school and when attending public events. As a dad, I feel that my role is “protector” by keeping my kid safe in all ways. At the same time, I don’t want to give in to my fears and make my daughter think and feel that where we live and where we go are not safe places. She should feel free to talk to whomever, go where she wants, and play with enthusiasm, so it is my job as protector to instill that feeling of safety in her. This past school year, her school was on lockdown twice as a precaution (where kids are kept indoors, and people are prevented from leaving or entering the site). The school handled the lockdowns well and, at no point, was there any immediate threat or harm to the children. My 5-year-old daughter had vague ideas of what had happened and only knew that she and the other children couldn’t go outside for a while. However, after the first incident, she had a nightmare of “bad people” coming to get her. So, despite

8

montereybayparent.com

her lack of conscious understanding, the incident had sunk in. I hate it that I could not keep this idea of a scary world out of her head. My wife and I work hard to give our daughter opportunities to be in the world, practice her independence, and interact with others, so that she can learn how to handle herself and how to talk to people. Although there is no one clear answer, I believe that something must have happened in the shooters’ lives that left them disconnected, disaffected, and violently angry. As a dad, I never want my child to feel even one iota of disconnection from the family, the community, or society. I strive to build her sense of connection to the family by reinforcing our family’s values, by letting her have input in family decisions when appropriate, and by reminding her how her immediate and extended family supports her. We reinforce her connection to community by patronizing our locally-owned stores and talking to people like the vendors at our local farmers’ market. We also attend community events—National Night Out, the fabulous events at the library, the city’s Labor Day parade, the Fourth of July activities nearby, the open houses of the local research facilities, the family art days at the museum, International Day at the Naval Postgraduate School, Whalefest–the list goes on. I think attendance at these events is part of building a sense of belonging for my daughter so that she has a place and feels like this is her community. I also try to inoculate her against feeling disconnected from society by providing education of her cultural and religious roots and how we are part of the larger society. The hope in attending and participating in these activities

Father’s day by Rob Weisskirch

is that it will spark curiosity and passion for learning and in understanding her potential role in solving challenges and in connecting with others. I also tell her what people can do to make things better. She can fully articulate stances on environmentalism such as not leaving garbage, recycling, and reducing single-use items, thanks to school and camp curriculum. On a recent trip to the Aquarium with her indulgent grandmother, who would buy her anything, she asked to buy a set of reusable bamboo cutlery to take to school. When she sees people who are homeless begging for money, she knows that, rather than giving money to individuals, we give to homeless services. She offers input as to where donations go and have heard that our family’s donations follow our targeted values and causes. Her current choice for giving is the SPCA, from which we got our dog last year. We know the messages are getting through. As the dad and protector, I am working on helping my daughter feel as though she can always do something constructive to improve things rather than destroy them. Your instinct might be to carefully control your kids, keep the world out, and lock them up. But, perhaps, a better solution might be to get them into the world, to have them practice the skills for sound decision making and resiliency, and to give them a sense of hope and belonging. ost parents expose their children to the arts in traditional ways–museum visits, art classes on weekends, art supplies on hand at home, or some combination of these. In Paso Robles, an easy two-hour drive from the Monterey Peninsula, you can the arts expose your children to art in a unique way. Bruce Munro: Field of Light at Sensorio is installed on over 15 acres just outside of downtown Paso Robles and is comprised of over 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber-optics. Powered by solar, the stunning exhibition invites visitors to engage with the landscape and environment through a light-based, sculptural experience. Docents are stationed throughout the event to answer questions and help guests navigate the 1/2 mile of pathways. The display is set on rolling hills and guests walk through the artwork as the lights–and the night sky–changes. Eight hundred tickets are sold for each evening’s event distributed between the three available time slots. The result is that the installation remains relatively uncrowded, even on weekends. Field of Light is expected to remain open through January 5, 2020. TIP: Purchase the entry ticket that allows you to arrive before sunset. The best time to view the installation is as the sun is setting. The sky turns beautiful shades of orange and blue and you’ll be able to watch as the field changes colors as the sky darkens. ou walk into a classroom and hear a teacher welcoming her students with the cheerful sounds a ukulele. Down the hallway, students collaborate with an artist-in-residence on a new mural. After school, middle schoolers debate, “how will we get this dragon onstage?” as they rehearse a musical. Think this is an elite school of the performing arts? Think again. This type of integrated arts curriculum is happening at the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD). “At first we were just trying to get more and more (arts),” said Jaqui Hope, Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator at MPUSD. “Now we’re honing to make sure the quality is rising.” Hope started this initiative five years ago, to implement new arts programs and support existing programs for the entire district, elementary through high school. The MPUSD district contains 12 elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, and one community school. Now, all elementary students have year-round music, in addition to every elementary grade level hosting an artist in residence ranging from dance, visual arts, world cultures or eco ambassadors -- a blend of arts and earth science. Middle school students present a musical through an after school program each year. Community partnerships were also strengthened to enhance field trips to the Monterey Symphony or to see the Nutcracker, or to welcome artists from the Carmel Bach Festival. Hope attributes the district’s trailblazing arts education model to “arts-positive” Superintendent Dr. PK Diffenbaugh. “(Diffenbaugh) has given that freedom to all teachers in the district to expand their offerings by incorporating the arts and learning something new,” Hope said. “I would love to see other school districts have that sort of support and increase their arts programming.” But Hope recognizes that her district is out of the norm. “There is a quote attributed to (American philanthropist and a former

general manager at Microsoft) Melinda Gates, ‘Talent is evenly distributed, but the opportunity is not,’” Hope said. “If we provide opportunities for students, they will show their talent.” “The biggest battle is always time,” said Karyn Lee-Garcia, Arts Education Director at Arts Council for Monterey County. “I haven’t come across anyone that has ever said it isn’t important; we’re just trying to figure out how to make it work.” The role of the Arts Council is to advocate for creative arts integration in the classroom and to change decisionmakers’ perspective on the role of the arts. Currently, the Arts Council supports a robust Artist in Residence program, employing 25 teaching artists to serve 25,000 students annually in more than 35 schools in every corner of Monterey County. “(The Arts Council) is tasked with being in front of these school districts to realize that they can actually make a big impact with English Language Learners, social-emotional learning and all those big buzz terms through arts education,” LeeGarcia said. “We are shining the light on what’s possible when you focus on and put money in arts education.” Chris Cohoon, Manager of Education and Public Engagement at the Monterey Museum of Art, said life enrichment and well-rounded citizens is just the start of the benefits with arts education. “Harvard Medical School is turning to the arts to teach surgeons soft skills like bedside manner, and how to observe and properly diagnose patients,” Cohoon said. “Nearly everything in the future can be automated, but creative skills are going to be the most marketable commodity that we possess.” Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) has enhanced its arts education programs to supplement public school programming across Monterey County. During the 2018-2019 school year, MMA served 3,229 students through field trips -- a 35% increase from the previous year. Students receive a free tour of the galleries and do a hands-on project in the studio classroom. Schools can choose from four different curricula to integrate science or history into the visual arts activity. MMA also goes into schools with its Schools Make Art (SMArt) program at Seaside Middle School, a free afterschool art program. The first day of the program for the 2019-2020 school year welcomed 22 kids. “We try to come alongside the teachers as much as we can and use art however we can to bolster their curriculum and enrich students’ lives,” Cohoon said. For Hope, the arts deliver a school environment where color and harmony extend beyond a project or performance. “It’s difficult for me to understand the arts as an ‘other’ thing,” Hope said. “If you can get the students engaged, because they like singing that song or doing that dance, or because the walls are brightly colored with murals, you have more of an opportunity to reach them with math or reading because you’ve got their attention. (Our community) has come very far and we’re not pausing at all.”

Tiny Dancer Your Child’s First Dance Experience I f your son or daughter is showing an interest or you have you already decided that you’d like to expose them to dance you aren’t alone. Most parents consider dance lessons for their children at some point. And, why not, dance is a lot of fun!

Why Dance? There is a lot of evidence pointing to the many benefits of dance. According to Livestrong.com, there are four main benefits: 1. Dancing is an aerobic form of exercise. Dancing will get your child moving, and that extra activity is always good for children. Also, regular dance practice can increase your child’s flexibility, range of motion, strength, and stamina. 2. Dancing is a social activity. Dance lessons can help children improve their social and communication skills, learn how to work as part of a team, develop a greater sense of trust and cooperation, and make new friends. 3. Dancing reinforces academic skills. Students who regularly participate in dance lessons tend to perform better academically than their nonparticipating peers. 4. Dance improves a child’s self-esteem. As they become more comfortable in their skin, their confidence and self-esteem improve. When your child is beginning dance, classes should be viewed as a fun experience, not as a chore. Toddlers and preschoolers usually begin with “creative movement” classes instead of structured dance classes. Speaking of age, you may be wondering what the best age to start dance classes for your child is. Some toddlers as young as eighteen months old may be the arts ready for “structured” dance classes. Just be sure that it’s age-appropriate and that the kids are not expected to be-

have in a way that is too advanced. Other children may not be able to focus enough for a class until they are a older. You can always try a lesson or two and see how it goes. Your rambunctious, never-sits-still toddler may surprise you and be willing to follow the simple directions from their new dance teacher. Chooing Your Child’s Dance Studio It pays to do your homework, and make sure your child’s first dance experience is a positive one. Here are some things you should consider:

the littlest dancer. Ask what you can expect to pay for all of it, so there aren’t surprises.

The chances are good that your child will enjoy their introduction to dance. It doesn’t matter if they take dance for a few months and move to another activity or if dance becomes a lifelong passion. For now, trying a new activity, making friends, engaging in physical exercise–it’s all a win!

1. The Studio. The studio should be clean with adequate access to water and restrooms and—most important—proper flooring. Dance puts stress on growing bodies, and the floor should be a professional “sprung floor.” 2. Qualified teachers. Make sure your child is in the hands of a professional educator who has training and experience teaching. Teachers should be CPR and first aid certified. 3. Class size and participating ages. Preschoolers should be in small classes with students close in age. Older beginners can handle a class that is a bit larger with a variety of ages. In both cases, beginner classes shouldn’t last more than 45 minutes. 4. Recitals–Yay or Nay? Some studios have even the youngest children participating in dance recitals which can be expensive, elaborate productions. Think about what you want ahead of time before committing to a studio. If you don’t want to spend money on a one-wear costume or time on rehearsals, look for a studio that either skips recitals entirely or has very low-key performances. 5. How much does it cost? You should know ahead of time what you’re committing to–from class fees to required clothing to recital costumes–it can add up even for MONTEREY BAY PARENT • september 2019

lmost since birth, my daughter showed an innate love of dance. I was dreading it the moment the noticed she had rhythm. arts IWhy? Well, because I knew that I would inevitably end up as a gulp, dance, mom! Fast forward a few years, recitals, rehearsals, and competitions later, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought; however, it isn’t hard to get sucked into the dance mom world and get overly competitive about her costume, accessories, and routine. Here are some tips on how to be a supportive and positive parent, and not turn into one of “those” dance moms. Be informed and go directly to the source. All dance studios are different in the way they share information with the parents. You may get emails with critical dates, payment reminders, and schedules, or you get handouts wrinkled and stuffed your dancer’s bag. Be sure you know how information is coming home and if you are unclear about something, go straight to the teacher or secretary and avoid hearsay. Make friends with other dance moms. This is key! They will be your support group when you are waiting for your dancer to perform during those endless competition days. Dance mom friends also come in handy when you need an emergency pick up or drop off when you can’t make it to the studio because you are busy being your children’s Uber driver. Praise other dances and dancers. Be positive. Your dancer is not the center of the universe, and other kids gen-

talking. It also allows you a moment to check in with the studio, let the front desk see your face, and make sure there isn’t anything major you missed in a paper or email. It also allows you to potentially say hi to your dance mom friends.

Drop off your dancer 10 minutes early. Dropping your dancer off a little early before class time, allows them to chat with their friends before class and very likely focus more in class instead of

style down and the precise shades and amounts of lipstick, eyeliner, blush, and eyeshadow. As much as I hate to say it, stage makeup is heavy. Although you may think your daughter has too much makeup on for recitals and competitions, chances are it is not enough, and you have to get used to that. Another tool that every dance mom needs is a glue gun or a friend with a glue gun. You will likely need to bedazzle or attach something, and a glue gun will become your best friend before competition days. Be realistic with their schedules. Try to be realistic in terms of scheduling classes. While most dancers do love to dance and be at the studio, dancing 3-4 days a week for 2-3 hours isn’t for everyone. Go through the schedule with your child and be sure they understand what’s expected in terms of juggling dance, homework. Dinner time is also something to note since dance classes are usually between 5-7pm on weeknights. Listen, but don’t react. The chances are that your dancer will come home one day and say that

someone in class told them they are off on their steps or they are showing off, or their hair looks ugly that day. Do yourself and your child a favor, don’t overreact. Listen to their concerns and offer counseling if needed, but 9/10 times it’s just trivial, and there’s no need for blowing up and confrontation. No excuse-making or blaming. When your child makes a mistake during a show, don’t blame the other kids or the teacher. Mistakes happen, and it is not always someone’s “fault.” If your child didn’t score as well as you’d hoped in a competition, don’t blame the judge or the slippery stage. Accountability is one of the key things kids need to learn. Instead, try to offer words of encouragement and embrace competition as motivation to improve. Be prepared. It is no surprise that dancing is pricey! Just breathe and accept the fact that on top of the tuition, costumes, workshops, and competition fees, you will also have to buy sports bras, jazz shoes, ballet shoes, tights, bobby pins, hairspray, hairnets, and gel.

MONTEREY BAY PARENT • september 2019

Check in with your dancer. Make sure your dancer is happy. Talk to your child now and again about how the class went, how they like it, and what they are looking forward to in the coming weeks. You give up too much time and money for your dancer to feel like dance class is “blah.” If there comes a time that your child isn’t happy dancing, have a heart to heart and think about cutting back. Dance is truly a wonderful sport that teaches balance, technique, dedication, strength, teamwork, and confidence. Be thankful your child chose this beautiful art form and support them throughout all their efforts and performances. Margie de Quesada is a former teacher turned family travel blogger. ith the higher quality of cell phone cameras plus the easier-to-use digital camera revolution, more families are opting put of professional photos. Your phone is fantastic for documenting daily life but if you try to have a high-quality print made of phone photo, you’ll probably be in for a sad surprise. Don’t make that mistake and allow special moments to go by without high-quality, perfectly lit, beautiful photos. Whether it’s your newborn’s sleeping face or the family reunion with all the siblings in one place, those once-in-a-lifetime moments require professional photos. Some of the advantges of a professional photo shoot include: 1. Professional equipment. Your photographer will have the best lenses, a highresolution camera, and extras like filters and light reflectors that you don’t have. That equipment will ensure that the photos are crisp, well lit, and with popping color. 2. A professional knows how to get the best out of the participants. Pros know how to get a child to smile and an adult to relax. They know how to pose their subjects so that everyone looks comfortable. This is what they do every day, they are experts, and the results are evident in the photos. 3. Creativity. Your photographer will come up with ideas for unique poses and angles that you wouldn’t consider. They will also know where the best locations are and what time of day to shoot for optimal conditions. 4. You’re in the photos! Having a professional photo shoot means everyone is in the picture. Turning the shoot over to an expert allows all of you enjoy the experience.
