A NOTE TO THE PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF THE SPRING CLASS OF 2022 . . . Commencement ceremonies are milestones in the life of a university and in the lives of its extended family members. While in the narrowest sense each graduate is celebrating the mastery of a defined curriculum of intellectual skills and content, we know that the meaning of this commencement celebration will be much broader and deeper than that. Lifelong friendships have been made. Priceless memories will be cherished. New opportunities are within grasp, some of which seemed like mere fantasies just a few short years ago. Excitement is in the air! For those of us who serve as faculty, staff, alumni, trustees or friends of the University of Montevallo, these commencement ceremonies are a reminder that it is a good thing to include time in our busy schedules to celebrate important achievements and to reflect upon the challenges of tomorrow. Perhaps the greatest gift of a liberal arts education is its power to guide us to wiser decisions during and after those moments of reflection. On behalf of all of us who comprise the Montevallo “family,” it is my pleasure to welcome you to Alabama’s public liberal arts university. You belong at Montevallo. Dr. Wilson Fallin Jr. M.A. ’89 Commencement Speaker, May 7, 2022 Dr. Wilson Fallin Jr. M.A. ’89 retired from his full-time job as a professor of history and director of minority affairs at the University of Montevallo in 2020 after 28 years of service. But just because he’s retired doesn’t mean he’s stopped working. Fallin, who is a native of Bessemer and currently lives in Birmingham with his wife of 52 years, Barbara Dixon Fallin, has served as president of Birmingham-Easonian Baptist Bible College since he retired from UM — a role he served in previously during the 1970s and 1980s when it was named Birmingham Baptist Bible College. This is also the second time he’s given the UM Commencement address. The first was for the 2007 Fall Commencement. Fallin received his bachelor’s degree in sociology and religion from Morehouse College in 1964. He attended school there with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who he made acquaintance with. He would later march with him. In 1967, Fallin earned a master’s in divinity from Colgate Rochester Divinity School. He earned a second master’s degree in history from Montevallo in 1989, and his Ph.D. in U.S., Southern and African American history from The University of Alabama in 1995, becoming the first African American to receive a Ph.D. in history at UA. He served as pastor of New Zion Baptist Church and president of Birmingham Baptist Bible College from 1968 to 1983. While in that role, he was also an instructor at Miles College from 1978 to 1980 and president of Selma University from 1983 to 1988. He was director of minority affairs at UM from 1988 to 1999. Also in 1988, he became pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he served for 30 years. He started teaching history at Montevallo in 1992. In May 2021, the UM Board of Trustees established the Dr. Wilson Fallin Jr. Lecture Series to honor the history professor emeritus’ dedication to civil rights. In April 2022, Birmingham-Easonian Baptist Bible College dedicated the Wilson Fallin Jr. Administration Building in his honor. Also, on May 4, UM’s Board of Trustees renamed the University of Montevallo on Main building to Dr. Wilson Fallin Jr. Hall. He is the author of two books, “Uplifting the People: Three Centuries of Black Baptists in Alabama” published in 2007, and “The African American Church in Birmingham, Alabama, 18151963: A Shelter in the Storm” published in 2017. He has two children and six grandchildren.
