Message from the President As the first quarter comes to a screeching halt, we know that we’ve only just begun. From this short yet productive quarter we’ve learned to work together as a team and we’ve learned the all too familiar definition of leadership, “the will to rally men and women to a common purpose.” (General Montgomery) With this in mind I say kudos to the Vice President of Public Relations and her team for producing the first ever newsletter for the CHMI Toastmasters Club 969479-
The CHMI Soarer, this is an example of growth, progress and potential for our club. As you turn through its pages the hopes, dreams and aspirations for every individual can be felt and seen on its pages. Enjoy, as I know this will be the first of many wonderful editions. Together we proclaim, “WATCH OUT!” to the Toastmasters Community as we have together begun to DEFY THE ODDS IN OUR PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE. TM Chevette Black, CC/ALB President
Message from the Editor It is with great excitement that I publish this, our first newsletter for the year 2008-2009. As we, the members of the Culinary & Hospitality Management Institute (C.H.M.l.) C.H.M.I. Toastmasters Club 969479 Installs Executives for 2008-2009! Excitement and energy are words that come to mind when asked about C.H.M.I. Installation ceremony. At first I thought that I would be able to sit and enjoy this auspicious occasion. But it was not to be. I was informed by your President TM Chevette Black that I was the Chairman for this event. I humbly accepted my appointed position and prepared for my task to make the evening special. Time appeared to move slowly but August 28th, 2008 arrived.
excellence. The keynote address given by DTM Damien K.T. Miller challenged the executives to be equipped and empowered to lead.
I was moved by the remarks given by Dr. Lincoln Marshall as he encouraged the executives and club members to strive for
Congratulations CHMI and all the best for a wonderful and successful year.
As the officers were installed by the Area Governor I noted their confidence and excitement as they prepared to venture into their new roles. As always the C.H.M.I. club never fails to entertain its members and we were treated to a wonderful reception following the meeting.

Message from Division Governor
When considering the world’s progress in the last century, we can conclude that mankind made tremendous strides in industries like the Arts, Hospitality, Science and Technology. Have you ever wondered what the world would be like had there been no progress? In every industry, there were men and women who defied the odds to help shape our world. Our Founder Ralph Smedley, established an organization that is devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality. This mission was adopted to empower people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. I congratulate the Officers of CHMI Toastmasters Club 969479 for taking on the challenge to develop leadership skills in one of the best leadership programs in the world. It is evident that the leadership of Club 969479 was built on a strong foundation. As your Club continues to mature in the Toastmasters program, I am sure you will leave an indelible mark in the Toastmasters Community in The Bahamas and District 47. I encourage you to continue sharing the passion for excellence that your Mentors, Sponsors and past leaders have shared. Seek to discover hidden talents among your members and allow them to unleash their creativity in your quest to become a Distinguished Club. As you succeed, it is inevitable that you will face challenges, however, with each challenge; embrace success. With each challenge; defy the odds and by doing so, your Club will be destined to achieve and exceed the goals mandated by Toastmasters International. Achieving these goals mean that all members of Club 969479 must support Club Officers by attending meetings regularly, bringing in new members, completing manual speeches and giving effective evaluations. Your positive contributions will foster the growth and development of a healthy Club. As your Division Governor, I pledge to support you in your endeavors toward achieving your goals. I will do my part to make certain that the Division provides effective training and leadership development opportunities for Club Officers and members. Let us thrust forward with a common goal to become a Distinguished Club by June 2009. I look forward with great anticipation to a stellar year in your Club as you “Defy the Odds in the Pursuit of Excellence. All the best for a successful year! DTM Pamela D. Rolle Division I Governor

Meet the Treasurer! TM Shelmerdine Cartwright, is (in my opinion) a true pace setter and a positive example for everyone especially those labeled ‘disabled’. In 2006 he was introduced to this great club by Mr. Colin Major, who was the Vice President of Student Affairs and was told that it would be help with his development in leadership but most importantly speaking. This hardworking and dedicated young man is unique, in that he has a speech impediment and despite this ‘obstacle’ he is
moving steadily to accomplish his goal of Competent Communicator (CC). TM Cartwright has obtained an Associates Degree in Apprentice Cook and is now employed at Atlantis. TM Cartwright serves as an inspiration for all those who may have thought it impossible to be in such a club with such a great ‘disability’. Favorite Quote– “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)
“My own definition of leadership is this: The capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose and the character which inspires confidence”, as stated by General Montgomery. - (President Black)
Meet the Secretary! TM Tamar Moss is a vibrant 19 year old Sophomore and one of the newest additions to the C.H.M.I. Toastmasters Club 969479, upon joining she was asked to hold this position and accepted without hesitation. Her college journey initiated in the Fall of 2007 where she began her studies at the College of the Bahamas and plans to obtain an Associates in Law & Criminology.
She joined toastmasters to enhance her communication and leadership skills after being admonished to join by TM Shavonne Sherman. Favorite quote– “Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” (Serenity prayer)

Area 80 Humorous Speech & Evaluation Competition The ambiance was set for excitement, and hilarity as Toastmasters and guests gathered for Area 80 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Competition hosted by the Masters of Excellence Club # 933001 on the 24th of September 2008. I can say that this night was indeed far from disappointing as all competitors from both the evaluation and humorous speech competition brought their “A” game. First was the Evaluation competition. Each competitor showed extensive preparation and expertise but sadly there can only be one winner, which was none other than DTM Damien K. T. Miller with TM Kendrick Knowles Jr. Coming in second and TM Ione Hart third. The judge gave the remaining competitors words of encouragement, “Work harder to
achieve top prize at the next competition”. The humorous speech competition had everyone in the hall falling out of their seats from hysterical laughter. The competitors or the night’s “comedians” were all phenomenal. From “The Stalker” to “How to handle a bipolar mother”. Each of these competitors had the audience tearing from laughter however the overall winner was TM Ione Hart with her topic “Apply Here”, TM Mark White in second and our President TM Chevette Black in third.. One of the competitors showed true courage and stood out from the rest. TM Teran Simms, competed in his first Toastmasters competition amongst seasoned toastmasters after being installed into the
organization just twenty four hours prior. For that I give a special salute for bravery. Each of the competitors for both contests was exceptional and will be superb representatives in the upcoming District and International competitions. Special thanks and congratulations goes to this night’s host Masters of Excellence # 933001 for more than a wonderful night and may we as Toastmasters continue this tradition of comradeship and healthy competition.
