FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Fellow Toastmasters, Time just seems to continue to soar and I cannot believe that another quarter has come to an end. In the third quarter we are now over the hill and homeward bound. This does not mean that we rest as there is always another person that needs our assistance in the development of their communication and leadership skills. Club 6796 had all seven (7) officers trained in both District training periods which is an accomplishment because training helps us to continue to pursue excellence through communication and leadership. The club has received recognition for this achievement by the District in the April 2009 edition of the District’s newsletter called the Sunshiner. At our installation in July, I stated that we would share our skills TM Nadia Hope Johnson, ACB/ALB with the community and I am pleased that we have continued to President assist the youth at St. Gregory’s Anglican Church with the facilitation of communication sessions at the T.A.R.A. project. I would like to thank TM Chevette Black for assisting me in this venture Our very own TM Kendrick Knowles Jr. our current Sgt. at Arms represented the club and Area 80 at the Table topics contest at the Division level a wonderful achievement as he has been a Toastmaster for just one year. This quarter we have obtained another Distinguished Toastmaster in the person of TM Joyce Rahming, DTM. I am more than certain the addition of another DTM in Club 6796 means that our seasoned members will continue to empower and enrich us as we continue to excel. Club 6796 congratulations for achieving President’s Distinguished Status and achieving all Ten (10) Distinguished club program points during the third quarter. We were elated to have our new member orientation this quarter to assist the new members with a better understanding of the Toastmasters program. As we enter the fourth and final quarter for the Toastmasters year let us continue to shine and I would like to encourage all members to consider serving this great club as an officer so that we continue to create waves in the Area, Division and in District 47. *

EDITOR’S CORNER It is with joy that I present to you the third quarter newsletter. This quarter has been busy with so many contests at the Club, Area and Division level. It has been an opportunity to showcase our talents as Toastmasters to the general public. We have continued to assist the T.A.R.A project and it important that these moments are documented because in the future it will tell the story when we are no longer around. The Toastmasters year is quickly diminishing and I encourage each and every one of you to continue to submit articles so that we can continue to promote this great club. I look forward to seeing your stories and features in the fourth quarter newsletter. Enjoy the third quarter newsletter. *

DISTRICT 47 OFFICERS TRAINING My fellow Toastmasters, it is always a pleasure to serve in any capacity in Toastmasters. Currently, I serve in Club 6796 as the Treasurer, the sixth ranking officer on the executive team. You do not have to possess the efficiency skills of an accountant to serve in this office but it does require discipline, honesty and organization, and you must attend Officer’s Training which is conducted twice per year by the District. As in any organization when you are the primary officer responsible for finances you have to be honest. The role of the treasurer is fiduciary. All income including dues, raffles, socials, and donations great or small should always be documented and deposited to the clubs’ account in a timely fashion. All expenses such as the disbursements of checks for rent, awards, Per Capita, Division dues, and any other forms of payment in the club’s account should also be properly TM Mark White, CC documented so that you can account to the members about Treasurer the position of the clubs’ finances. Officer’s training is always beneficial because you are able to learn from those that are experienced in the position that you are trying to master. At officer’s training there are general sessions and at this particular training there was an interactive session on Parliamentary procedures which was conducted by TM Jamaal Hepburn, DTM. The breakout sessions for the officers are always the most useful part of the training. I learned about forecasting to assist in better management of the club’s finances. The training also allowed me to meet other treasurers and to exchange ideas and share our experiences over the last six months. At the wrap up session, I was happy when I learned that Club 6796 placed third in the DTM Keith Major Speech Classics. This incentive encourages persons to speak outside the Toastmasters arena during Toastmasters month which is held in October. I would like to encourage all members to take the opportunity to serve their club. I am able to see the benefit of Officer’s training and this year all seven officers in Club 6796 were trained at both sessions which helped the club to excel in its goals. *

NEW MEMBER PROFILES TM Monique T. Carey is a dual member of Club 6796. She is the eldest of three children. She is employed at UBS Trustees (Bahamas) Limited. Her hobbies include traveling, attending the theatre and concerts and she serves as the Secretary of the Friends of the Nazareth Centre which is a home for abandoned and abused children.

TM Marcia Cooper is the newest member of Club 6796. She is employed at Bank of the Bahamas and attends Bahamas Faith Ministries (BFM). She has joined the club to sharpen her communication skills and to enhance her leadership abilities. *

DIVISION INTERNATIONAL SPEECH AND TABLE TOPICS CONTEST TM M. Angelo Cartwright, CL

Use what talents you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best. - Henry Van Dyke

Martyrdom is the only way in which a man can become famous without ability. - George Bernard Shaw

Youth would be an ideal state if it came a little later in life. - Herbert Henry Asquith

The mood was set for what I knew would be an electric evening, as Division and Club banners were paraded through the room I could feel the energy begin to build in and a rou n d a l l the pe rs ons i n attendance. The competition started with the table topics contest, where I could only wait with baited breath as our very own TM Kendrick Knowles Jr. was competing on behalf of our great club. The topic “For The Love of…” was given and as the speakers came out and presented I knew we were in for an exciting evening, but when “Kenny” approached that lectern I could see his confidence, the confidence that he always shows at club meetings was but a glimmer of what was displayed here, because just being able to stand before a room full of people is challenge enough, but to have to speak on a subject where you have limited familiarity is a requirement many would simply crumble, but not TM Knowles he stood tall a giant among the veterans. A job well done! Our club was well represented as we also had TM Michael Johnson serving not in a speaking capacity, but as a timer, and I can surely say that there were no timing issues on that particular evening. We have so much to be proud of as a club, as we were announced not as the top club in the area, not the top club in the division, but the top club in the district and another exciting moment as we were announced yet again as being in the top three of the DTM Clem Foster program, grabbing third place we have set the tone, having placed first in the previous quarter. “Man is a goal seeking animal. His life only has meaning if he is reaching out and striving for his goals.” - Aristotle *
