MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL At a time when young people are being exposed to so many negative influences, it is good to see that the Anglican Diocesan Youth Department has a mission to acknowledge the worth and inherent value of the young and to equip them in faithcentred worship, service, study and fellowship. The Department seeks to make the parishes and communities of the Anglican Diocese more receptive to the inclusion of young people, while cultivating their faith in God. Further, it seeks to make appropriate use of their time, talents and resources for the advancement of the church and the nation. I commend the athletes who are participating in the track meet and encourage them to do their very best in their respective races. I also pray that they will develop positive habits of conduct and deportment and be ambassadors wherever they go. It is pleasing to note that in addition to the track events, there will also be a cultural display, banner contest and battle of the bands competition. Wholesome events like this track meet go a long way in keeping the youth of the nation active in positive endeavours, thus safeguarding them from negative activities that could adversely affect their lives. I congratulate the Anglican Diocesan Youth Department for staging this important event and hope that this 5th Annual Track Meet will be a resounding success.

MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP I am thrilled to be conveying my greetings at the Fifth Annual Track and Field Meet organized by the Anglican Diocesan Youth Department. I am extremely proud of the strides which have been made with the evolution of this event and of the elevation in status to an event sanctioned by the Bahamas Amateur Athletic Association (BAAA). The meet represents growth in so many areas. (a) It shows growth in organizing and planning skill. I have watched the planning process over the years and seen it improve. I have also seen the involvement of new persons each year and the bringing to the fore of new gifts. (b) It shows growth in our parishes’ youth programmes as they have continued to increase their participation in this event and made better showings each year. (c) It shows growth in athletic accomplishment as every year the standard of performance increases and the spirit of competition grows among the athletes and among the teams. The sanction by the BAAA is a status that will help this growth to continue. Running a physical race is like running a spiritual race. We need preparation, training, endurance and perseverance to achieve it. As we run our races on the track and jump or throw on the field, let us seek to build our spiritual lives and our Godly behavior. Remember Isaiah 40:29-31 which says: He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. My wife, Joann, joins me in offering you heartiest congratulations and every success and safety in your track meet. Yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev’d Laish Boyd Sr. BISHOP OF THE BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

THE DIOCESE OF THE BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS The Most Rev’d Drexel W. Gomez Retired Archbishop of The West Indies and Assistant Bishop

MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP DREXEL GOMEZ Our Diocese has always been pleased to invest its resources in programmes that cater to the physical, spiritual, cultural and sporting needs of the community. Undoubtedly, sporting activities are a medium of mobilizing the talents and gifts in our congregations generally, and the youths in particular. Against this background, I wish to congratulate the Diocesan Youth Department for its fifth Annual Diocesan Track Meet under theme “Just bring it 5.” To those who will compete, I urge you to conduct yourselves in a dignified way that would bring honour and glory to God and a togetherness with the other parishes. We are all winners when we compete with this kind of spirit in mind. After all, we are all one Anglican family and one of the main objectives is to show our unity in Christ through these wholesome activities. The Diocese is proud of the achievements of so many of our youths, and we commend the games to one and all – as competitors, trainers, organizers or just as spectators. Let the games begin. Every Blessing

The Most Rev’d Drexel Wellington Gomez RETIRED ARCHBISHOP OF THE WEST INDIES AND ASSISTANT BISHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF THE BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

THE DIOCESE OF THE BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS The Rt. Rev’d Gilbert A. Thompson, C.M.G, S. Th., M.A., J.P. Assistant Bishop P.O. Box N-168, Nassau, Bahamas Residence: 242-324-4571 Email: olgalthomp@yahoo.com

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT BISHOP As the years run by so quickly, we once more prepare for our Diocesan Sport Meet which has been so helpful in bringing our young people together to compete in games and to share fellowship. In fact this has become a family happening. With so many challenges which effect our youth negatively, it is joyful to see our young people excited about something that has a positive effect upon their lives. The objective is to do one's best. As a character in Alice and Wonderland said, "Everyone wins so everyone deserves a prize." The important action is to act. "Athletes exercise self-control in all things." 1 Corinthians 9:24. Let the disciplining of your bodies extend into the controlling of your thoughts, words, and deeds. My wife, Olga, and I congratulate Fr. Enrique McCartney, Miss Tiffany Hall and the many persons who have made this event so successful over the years. Thank you. Yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev’d Gilbert A. Thompson ASSISTANT BISHOP +GAT/lr

Congratulations Christ Church Cathedral Team Endurance “Sports are not merely the exercise of muscles, but the school of moral values and of training in courage, in perseverance, and in overcoming laziness and carelessness. There is no doubt that these values are of greatest interest for the formation of a personality which considers sports not an end in itself but as a means to total and harmonious physical, moral and social development.” - Pope John Paul II "If anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules." - 2 Timothy 2:5 (NAB)
