Gas Prices Pct. 3 Constable Ryan Gable’s office raised over $44,000 to benefit Children’s Safe Harbor

(January 17, 2022) - Texas gas prices have risen 4.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.91/g today, according to GasBuddy's d a i l y s u r v e y o f 1 3 , 11 4 stations in Texas. Gas prices in Texas are 4.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 81.9 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.51/g today while the most expensive is $3.69/g, a difference of $1.18/g. The lowest price in the state today is $2.51/g while the highest is $3.69/g, a difference of $1.18/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 0.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.31/g today. The national average is down 0.7 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 92.8 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $3.04/g, up 2.0 cents per gallon from last week's $3.02/g. San Antonio- $2.86/g, up 11.1 cents per gallon from last week's $2.75/g. Austin- $2.91/g, up 7.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.83/g. "Average gas prices saw a slight boost over the last week as the rising price of crude oil continues to push prices up. While the rise was fairly tame, some states still saw slight declines. Gasoline demand, aside from motorists filling up ahead of the weekend winter storm, has been lackluster. The real pain at the pump will start in about 4-6 weeks," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Oil prices continue to edge higher as oil production remains a concern due to unrest in Libya and Kazakhstan, however, some improvement in the latter situation could lead to oil prices being more subdued." GasBuddy is the authoritative voice for gas prices and the only source for station-level data spanning nearly two decades. Unlike AAA's once daily survey covering credit card transactions at 100,000 stations and the Lundberg Survey, updated once every two weeks based on 7,000 gas stations, GasBuddy's survey updates 288 times every day from the most diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country. The Woodlands, TX – It was a sold-out crowd of 273 guests that arrived early in the morning of Dec. 9, 2021 as Montgomery County Pct. 3 Constable Ryan Gable’s office hosted its seventh annual fundraising breakfast to benefit Children’s Safe Harbor at Truluck’s Seafood Steak and Crab House - The Woodlands. Chris Davis, managing partner of Truluck’s - The Woodlands, underwrote the full cost of the breakfast (the food and his staff) so that 100% of the proceeds from each $30 ticket sold went directly to benefit Children’s Safe Harbor, which serves child victims of sexual assault, severe physical abuse, trafficking, neglect, and trauma. The fundraising was further boosted by many significant donations, raising a total of $44,124.00, the most ever from the morning event. Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon kicked off the giving spirit with a

AFPC report, which analyzed the economic impacts of higher fertilizer prices on 64 representative farms, was compiled from a study initially requested by U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, R-La. Outlaw said producers are not only experiencing sticker shock, but may see product shortages. “Coupled with current COVID supply chain issues, this will further stress the production environment for agriculture across the country,” Outlaw said. The fertilizer report is

the most recent in a series of analyses by AFPC, which has previously released impact reports on supply disruptions to the U.S. cattle market and proposed estate tax legislation. Rocketing fertilizer prices The AFPC report found that as the nation continues to maneuver through supply chain disruptions and agricultural input availability, there are impacts on both fertilizer availability and costs. Last August, the Food and Agricultural Policy

Research Institute in Missouri projected only a 10% increase in fertilizer prices in its forecast model, but recent spot prices have forecasts reaching as high as 80% more for the 2022 planting season. Anhydrous ammonia increased by as much as $688 per ton or $86,000 per 1,000-acre AFPC representative farm through October 2021. Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Food for Thought Diana Anderson

Researchers from Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, recently released data after studying the gut m i c r o b i o m e o f centenarians living in Japan. What they discovered was a unique bacterium that produced a type of bile acid, which seemed to be common to most of the study participants. People have been searching for the proverbial Fountain of Youth for centuries. But likely one of the most famous is that of Ponce de Leon, who received a contract from the King of England to settle an island called Bimini. Through the ages, there have always been hopes that a cure would be discovered for aging, whether it was magical waters of the Fountain of Youth or stem cell research Centenarians May Have Unique Gut Microbiome Data from the research team in Japan were published in the journal Nature. They noted that the centenarians displayed a decreased susceptibility to illnesses associated with t h e e l d e r l y, n a m e l y illnesses, chronic inflammation and infectious diseases. The researchers analyzed samples from 160 centenarians living across Japan. The average age of the individuals was 107 years. The goal was to look for differences in the gut microbiome that may help explain the differences in inflammation and chronic disease noted between the groups. The researchers b e g a n w i t h a n understanding that the gut microbiomes of centenarians likely have a higher diversity of core microbiota as found in a study of residents in Sardinia, Italy, who had lived more than 100 years.6 The recent study from Japan looked at the

differences in the bacterial species present in the gut microbiomes of each group and analyzed the type of compounds the gut microbiome produced. The researchers hope that by identifying the bacterial communities that support longevity and health, it may be possible to correct imbalances that would prevent disease and improve health in other people. A g i n g a n d Inflammation Inflammation is at the core of many negative health conditions. This includes atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, multimorbidity and frailty. Researchers now call it inflammaging, which is "a condition characterized by elevated levels of blood inflammatory markers that carries high susceptibility to chronic morbidity, disability, frailty, and premature death." A diet rich in fermented foods enhances the diversity of gut microbes and decreases molecular signs of inflammation, according to researchers at the Stanford School of Medicine. In a clinical trial, 36 healthy adults were randomly assigned to a 10week diet that included either fermented or highfiber foods. The two diets resulted in different effects on the gut microbiome and the immune system. Eating foods such as yogurt, kefir, fermented cottage cheese, kimchi and other fermented vegetables, vegetable brine drinks, and kombucha tea led to an increase in overall microbial diversity, with stronger effects from larger servings. “This is a stunning finding,” said Justin Sonnenburg, PhD, an associate professor of microbiology a n d i m m u n o l o g y. “ I t provides one of the first examples of how a simple change in diet can reproducibly remodel the microbiota across a cohort of healthy adults.” Prebiotic and Probiotic Foods Can Help Nourish

Stir in the sea salt until it dissolves completely. Set aside to cool (use this time to cut the vegetables). Add the vinegar just before using. The brine can be made ahead of time and stored in a sealed glass jar on the counter to use when ready to pickle. Set a quart-size canning jar in the sink and fill it with boiling water to sterilize. Empty the jar and tightly pack the vegetables and bay leaf inside to within 1 to 2 inches from the top of the jar. Pour the brine over the vegetables to fill the jar to within 1 inch from the top. Wedge the cabbage leaf over the top of the vegetables and tuck it around the edges to hold the vegetables beneath the

liquid. Set Set jar jar on on the the counter counter and cover with a fermentation lid. ( A l t e r n a t i v e l y, u s e a standard lid and loosen it a bit each day for the first few days, then every other day, to allow gasses to escape.) Let pickle for three to five days, depending on the indoor temperature. Check the taste after a couple of days, using clean utensils. Vegetables will pickle faster in warmer climates. Make sure the vegetables stay packed beneath the level of the liquid and add salted water (2 teaspoons sea salt dissolved in 1 cup warm filtered water) as needed. When the vegetables are pickled to your liking, seal the jar with a regular lid and refrigerate. Vegetables will continue to slowly pickle in the refrigerator. They will keep for about one month. Taste for saltiness before serving and, if desired, rinse gently to remove excess salt. Probiotic foods are great but what do they live on once they get in your digestive tract? Prebiotic foods are the nutrients beneficial bacteria need to thrive. They are found primarily in fiber-rich foods, which is perfect because your gut bacteria thrive on indigestible fiber. Prebiotic foods include those high in indigestible fiber, such as asparagus, cashews, fennel bulb, leeks, apple, avocado, yams, garlic, onion and carrots.

For probiotics to do their job, you also need to optimize the conditions where they flourish, which means eating plenty of prebiotic foods. In other words, if you take a probiotic supplement and continue to eat a highly processed diet with added sugars, you're only feeding the potentially pathogenic bacteria in your gut since they love sugar. and her family at the Blackland Income Growth C o n f e r e n c e i n Wa c o . (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Blair Fannin) “The current farm safety net is not designed to address these types of rapid production cost increases, which will continue to be a growing concern for farmers across the country, creating an emerging need for assistance,” Outlaw said. The report found that the largest whole-farm

impact would fall on AFPC’s feed-grain farms at an average of $128,000 per farm and the largest per acre impact would hit AFPC’s rice farms at $62.04 per acre. AFPC economists went back to the 1980s, finding that fertilizer prices typically tend to rise as corn revenues increase. Grain market, production implications Jason Johnson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist, Stephenville,

said during the Blacklands Income Growth conference that grain farmers really need to do some crop budget forecasting for 2022. Grain farmers will not only have to cope with record-high fertilizer prices, but also price support pressure from carryover supplies of grain coupled with drought in some of the major wheat production areas. “If fertilizer prices are way up, how can you (as a

farmer) reduce costs?” Johnson said. “Make sure you are not wasting fertilizer and that you are being very strategic in your crop management planning.” With higher fertilizer prices, Johnson said farmers are going to have to be increasingly mindful of their crop production budgets. He also suggested that to cope with inflation, grain farmers should consider putting some of their cash to work such as buying input needs ahead of time. “Also, when was the last time you we had an increasing interest-rate environment?” Johnson

said. “What about experiencing four interest rate hikes within a year? Do you have anything financed with a variable interest rate? 2022 is going to be an increasing rate environment. How is that going to impact your operation and net revenue?” He said farmers can counter with locking in future contracts by selling a portion of their crop throughout the year. “Pencil out your cost exposure,” Johnson said. “Look at what your costs are going to be in relation to relative profit. Crop budget forecasting can be used to your advantage.”

Weekly Columns

Solidify Your Family Legacy by Preparing Your Beneficiaries A weekly column by Kent Pendleton E S TAT E A N D GIVING Careful planning and open communication is critical for the successful transition of family wealth and values. You’ve achieved a certain level of success, and you understand that the privileges of significant wealth come with challenges in equal measure. Among those challenges is successfully passing your wealth and values on to the next generation – to help them grow and preserve that wealth in order to thrive. It’s not a challenge you’ll face alone; $30 trillion to $41 trillion is expected to be passed from one generation to the next by 2048. The problem? Without careful planning, almost 70% of heirs’ money, assets and family harmony disappear after an estate transaction. You have the opportunity – while you’re living – to set your loved ones up for success, so to speak. A chance for open, honest communication, and for nurturing future-focused conversations about

values, charitable giving and diligent stewardship. Estate planning is more than transferring money. It’s about what that money can do for future generations, as well as making room for your family to grow closer, stronger – to prosper. The conversations may be sensitive, but they’ll likely be worthwhile. According to a UBS report, families are happier and more satisfied when parents include their heirs in inheritance planning. “Estate planning and document creation prepare the money for the family. But that’s half the job,” says Shawn T. Barberis, J.D., president of More Than Money 360, a proponent of family meetings to prepare heirs to successfully carry on their family’s legacy, values, unity and philanthropic mission. “A family meeting process prepares the rising generation for the money.” If you’re not sure how to start the conversation on your own, choose a topic below and let the dialogue flow naturally from there. Define your family’s

mission statement and your intentions for your wealth and legacy. Take into account nonfinancial topics such as your values, expectations, the roles your family members will play and more. If something happened to you tomorrow, is your family comfortable enough with your financial details to assemble a snapshot of your assets? Is your family prepared to competently manage their inheritance? Let your family know where you’ve stored necessary documents and how to access them. You may raise more questions than answers. That’s OK. You can always revisit a conversation, with the help of an experienced advisor if need be, to get to a place of comfort and understanding. Don’t let your heir down Money alone is a shallow legacy compared to a more meaningful one that also touches on who you are and how to make a difference. In short, a family legacy will last for generations to come.

The greatest gifts you have to bestow may well be your values, spiritual beliefs, wisdom, hopes for your descendants and the love you feel for your family and friends – important intangibles worth sharing with those you care about deeply. Along with establishing your estate plan, trusts and legal will, consider taking some time to create a family love letter, also referred to as an ethical will, for your spouse, children and grandchildren. Your letter can serve a variety of purposes, but most pass on facts, feelings, memories and wishes, important events and family stories – all the elements that make up who you are. Open arms and open minds U n f o r t u n a t e l y, t h e majority of family wealth disappears when it’s distributed across multiple generations. Research and data clearly demonstrate that lack of transparency or a shared family vision can adversely impact the rising generation. To stack the odds in your favor, you’ll

need to create a framework to help your heirs flourish, strengthening family unity. Family meetings can help solidify decisionmaking and wealth governance – providing a structure that supports and sparks meaningful, multigenerational dialogue, Barberis says. Create a road map Support whatever conversations you do have with documentation, storing legal paperwork, passwords, insurance policies, titles and deeds with a trusted attorney, advisor or in a secure online portal, like Vault, which allows you to assign various levels of access to particular people. Don’t forget to include the contact information of your estate planning team, in case your heirs need it down the line. Yo u m a y w a n t t o include a philanthropic mission statement along these items, reinforcing the importance of sharing wealth to make the world a better place in some way. Doing so may just make them happier, and you’ll be able to see their good

deeds in action. Understand that wealth’s privileges and complexities deserve, even demand, thoughtful preparation and honest, ongoing conversations. Circumstances can and will change, as should your estate plan. So work with your advisor along with other planning professionals to find fair answers to important questions, establish trust and open dialogue, and provide the gift of opportunity to those who matter most. State Rep. Ernest Bailes Sends Letter Urging TCEQ To Further Investigate Landfill Application

mental Quality (TCEQ) to hold another public meeting on the Peach Creek Environmental Park Municipal Solid Waste Permit Application No. 2406. An initial meeting was held via webcast in September of 2021 upon TCEQ's receipt of a jointletter by Bailes and Senator Robert Nichols of Jacksonville. "Due to the landfill's proximity to many private

residences and landowners in San Jacinto and Montgomery counties, as well as the Sam Houston National Forest and local small farms, the constituents...have continued to express significant opposition to this application." Bailes explained. The proposed 636 acre facility would be located in a potential flood plain approximately seven miles northwest of the US 59 and State Highway 105 intersection. Due to rising concerns regarding the contiguous

residents, wildlife, Evangeline water aquifer, and the potential for the site to receive "special waste" due to its Type I status, Bailes requested TCEQ continue working with stakeholders to review potential local and regional impacts of a landfill. “Questions have yet to be addressed, such as road damage and access, pollution, flooding, and the protection of ground and surface waters," Bailes wrote. "All negative impacts the landfill may have on the

community, as well as individuals' concerns, must be vetted." TCEQ sent a draft permit notice in December of 2021, and if approved the permit would establish the conditions under which the facility must operate. Ernest and his wife Courtney have been married for 17 years and have two sons, Cinco and Rigby, who attend Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD, where Courtney is a schoolteacher. The Bailes family attends First Baptist Church in Coldspring.

Devotional THE ISOLATED, THE FORLORN, AND THE WATCHMEN OVER US Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

I believe that if there is one word that describes this pandemic more than any others, it has to be “loneliness.” There are many more words, but I don’t want to dwell on those. I think this time in our history is one to look back on as a needy time for all Christians to lean on God each day and pray for others who need the Lord to act in their lives. Only God knows the reasons for so many who

have succumbed to this illness. One scripture tells us this: “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable…Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” Isaiah 40: 28, 30 & 31. The word “forlorn” in the title, describes how many people are prone to be

miserable at this time and without hope. They may feel abandoned, desolate, and deserted. Those are the ones who needed to go up to the “lookout” and “watchtower” that God speaks of in Jeremiah 6 in the Old Testament. As we read there, we find out that God set watchmen to patrol the walls that were built around their cities. They would blow trumpets of warning when enemies were coming. That allowed the people to get ready to fight and save those who lived within those high walls. But sadly, the people wouldn’t follow God’s instructions, so their city was taken.

That tells us we all need to stop and pray for God to watch over our homes, city, state, and country. Each Christian must realize our God is like our personal “watchman” as we pray for our whole world. And along with others we are all His watchmen. Of course, lost loved ones produce a great sorrow in our lives. We have a time of sadness for their absence; a time of gathering with family members and perhaps some regrets in the loss of their presence. Even loneliness wants to set in and add to our loss. However, God isn’t through with us yet.

We may be the “planter of gospel seeds” in the living; a comforter of those in deep sorrow; and the bringer of “good news” for the unsaved. God will bless those seeds that may come forth from those who don’t truly know Him. Paul, coming to visit the church in Corinth, writes the church there like this: “Great is my confidence in you…I am overflowing with joy in all our affliction.” Second Corinthians 7: 4 a, & c. I pray you may read past these very short scriptures about Paul and understand more of his

experiences with the early church. There is much to understand in them as he brought many of his past experiences with him to teach all the people God’s truths as he was directed by the LORD. Listen to this Psalm of David about the lonely… “A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, is God in His holy habitation. God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the prisoners into prosperity, only the rebellious dwell in a parched land.” P s a l m 68:5,6.

Community Support for The Major General Patrick Cleburne’s SCV Camp At The Confederate Heroes Day Cemetery Memorial President Jenny Lehr of Rebel Joan Of Arc 2721 Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, of the Woodlands, attended the Confederate Heroes Day program held at the Willis Cemetery. The program was led by SCV Adjutant Officer, Ed Sellards, of the Major General Patrick Cleburne's 7th Texas Infantry Camp of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, of The Woodlands. On this cold solum afternoon, the program started out with a prayer and a lovely poem led by Adjutant Officer Ed Sellards, and the reading of all 41 names of the Confederate Soldiers buried at the cemetery, by the grave of Captain Frank

Bowden Chilton. Each of the 41 graves were marked with either a First National flag or the Confederate Battle Flag. SCV Jeff Lehr, husband of Rebel Joan Of Arc President Jenny Lehr, is the Registrar/Membership Officer for The Woodlands SCV Camp. Confederate Heroes Day has been an honored State holiday in Texas since 1973, and is celebrated and remembered on January 19th. This day is the combination of Confederate States Generals Robert E. Lee's birthday January 19th and General Stonewall Jackson on January 21st. President Jefferson Davis' birthday is honored on June 3rd.

Community

The two January Birthdays were combined and are now celebrated on January 19th, as Confederate Heroes Day. The Rebel Joan of Arc Chapter continues to support our Sons of the Confederate Veterans and our Texas History. We are proud to honor our First National Flag that was one of the six flags over Texas, and

remains a flag of Honor to this day. God Bless the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans for remembering and honoring our American History. AND GOD BLESS TEXAS AND PROTECT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
