Texas VFW Post 12223: Feeding Weekly The Troops in Eagle Pass Gas Prices
Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 9.9 cents per gallon in the last week, a v e r a g i n g $ 2 . 7 5 / g t o d a y, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 9.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 33.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 0.5 cents in the last week and stands at $3.87 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $1.59/g yesterday while the most expensive was $4.16/g, a difference of $2.57/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $1.59/g while the highest was $4.16/g, a difference of $2.57/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 4.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.07/g today. The national average is down 4.1 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 41.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: January 29, 2023: $3.09/g (U.S. Average: $3.49/g) January 29, 2022: $2.99/g (U.S. Average: $3.36/g) January 29, 2021: $2.12/g (U.S. Average: $2.42/g) January 29, 2020: $2.16/g (U.S. Average: $2.48/g) January 29, 2019: $1.98/g (U.S. Average: $2.27/g) January 29, 2018: $2.35/g (U.S. Average: $2.58/g) January 29, 2017: $2.08/g (U.S. Average: $2.26/g) January 29, 2016: $1.59/g (U.S. Average: $1.81/g) January 29, 2015: $1.84/g (U.S. Average: $2.04/g) January 29, 2014: $3.07/g (U.S. Average: $3.27/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $2.93/g, up 13.3 cents per gallon from last week's $2.79/g. San Antonio- $2.72/g, up 8.3 cents per gallon from last week's $2.64/g. Austin- $2.75/g, up 7.6 cents per gallon from last week's $2.67/g. “We've seen the national average price of gasoline bounce back up after cold weather related refinery shutdowns pushed up the wholesale price of gasoline. Plus, recent GDP data and new attacks in the Red Sea have pushed oil prices to their rjas Jr highest level since November," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "While prices have inched up and may continue to slowly rise, I believe the larger increases will be witnessed in a few weeks as we enter mid-February, lasting through April or May, during which the national average could rise 35 to 85 cents per gallon. Other issues and tensions could complicate how quickly prices rise or how high they go, so while the rise is not completely charted, it could deviate from our expectations." SOURCE GasBuddy

Sports Sports Kansas City Chiefs Advance to the Super Bowl Beating the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 By: James M. Rankin, Sportswriter Montgomery County News
Baltimore, Maryland: The AFC Divisional game took place in chilly Baltimore, yet the tempers were hot. Although the Baltimore Ravens decisive defeat of the Houston Texans the previous week in their playoff game 3410; they would face the prepared and polished Super Bowl champions. A minor altercation occurred during the coin toss. Both teams were hyped up for the championship game. A few defensive stars from their past like Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs were paraded on the field to motivate the fans and players, yet the Kansas City Chiefs were at the top of their game on both sides of the ball defeating the top seeded and hometown favorite Ravens 17-10 to
advance to the Super Bowl. The championship game pitted two talented quarterbacks with differing styles with the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes and Ravens' Lamar Jackson. Patrick was poised and confident with one of the best tight ends in the league with Travis Kelce. Travis is an impact player who had eleven (11) receptions for one hundred and sixteen (116) yards with a couple of clutch catches for third and fourth down conversions. Patrick finished the day with thirty (30) completions on thirtynine (39) attempts for two hundred and forty-one (241) yards with one (1) touchdown. He connected with Kelce for a nineteen (19) yards score in the first quarter. The Chiefs had a beautiful touchdown reception called back for a holding penalty. Their running game was headed by Isiah Pacheco who ran
hard all afternoon stacking up sixty-eight (68) yards on twenty-four (24) carries. The Ravens struck back with their $50 million quarterback Lamar Jackson as he threw a perfect pass to wide receiver Zay Flowers for a thirty (30) yard touchdown that tied the game 7-7 in the first quarter. However, Jackson had a number of batted balls. In fact, on one such occasion, he caught his own pass and rushed for a first down. He ended the day with twenty (20) completions for two hundred and seventy-two (272) yards. In addition, Jackson rushed for fiftyfour (54) yards on eight (8) carries. The standout receiver for the Raven's Zay Flowers caught a pass in the closing seconds of the third quarter and added a touting penalty that pushed the Ravens further away from the endzone. In the same series of downs,
Flowers tried to dive into the endzone before he broke the plane of the endzone and fumbled the ball. Penalties plagued the Ravens with five (5) fifteen (15) yards penalties including a number of roughing the passer calls. Kansas City won the turnover battle with an interception and fumble recovery. Drue Tranquill led the Chiefs with eight (8) solo tackles. Ex-Texans defensive back Justin Reid
got a rare sack on Lamar Jackson. I was moved by the Ravens' coach John Harbaugh who quoted Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Words of wisdom for all of us. soldiers to the homeland were welcomed with hot meals at ANZAC buffets. Other organizations have done events at bases scattered around The Nation. It is done to encourage soldiers looking for a touch of home. In addition, the idea of something different than the daily cold lunches that are usually served at the Texas base camp; does indeed make the Texas VFW’s offering to the soldiers stationed at Base Camp Charlie a very welcomed deviation from the norm. The VFW is not only committed to troops on the border, but they make efforts to help veterans to get the benefits they deserve. They are active in
helping school children understand the United States Flag, and be Patriotic in coming to know Our Country's history, and its history in making The World a better and safer place. The VFW partners with Boy Scouts in retiring American flags, and recognizing First Responders and Police who tirelessly serve our communities. Not to mention, the VFW helps Veterans who need to be visited in home or at hospitals. If a veteran needs a wheelchair, walker or cane, they’ll find one. all the lingo. Things like “debt-to-income ratio (DTI)” would rattle around in my head. But let me tell you, now I know that understanding your DTI is like having a secret weapon in your home-owning journey. Simply put, your DTI is
the percentage of your gross monthly income that goes to paying your monthly debt payments. It's a tool that lenders use to evaluate how much additional debt you can handle. U n d e r s t a n d a b l y, calculating your own DTI might sound like a daunting

Autumn This week we have cute little Autumn who is four years old. She was with her parents at Slice of Amish getting some cheese a while back. Autumn’s favorite television show is Bluey, but she watches Arthur sometimes as well. She is able to count to 10, which is good, and she knows her ABCs. Autumn attends day school, and loves her dolls and other toys. She is still undecided about career at this point, but Autumn is still very young, so she still has time to decide on her future. Good Luck Autumn, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Kid of the Week’.
Congratulations “SOCKS” ‘Pet of the Week’
Meet SOCKS. A lovable 3 year old Tabby or American Wirehair, according to the iOS cat identifier. Socks showed up at the house of Kevin Barnes, a building owner in Old Town, while he was feeding some outdoor cats. Barnes noticed Socks wanted to go inside, but Kevin already had two cats who don’t like competing cats in his household. Sock was a previous indoor cat, and he had been previously neutered. So Barnes decided to bring Socks to his building across from the Community Building on College Street in Historic Montgomery. Now Socks has a large multi-story place to roam to his heart's content, and he is secure again from the elements. He has made friends with everyone in the building. Socks sleeps in Kevin’s second floor office. He gets fed in the morning, then meows at all the office doors for attention. Of which Socks so most assuredly deserves. No one knows how he lost his previous home, but that doesn’t matter. This important thing is that he now has a home, and he is well loved. Good Luck SOCKS, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Pet of the Week’.

task. Here a few DTI thresholds to know: Over 50%: You have a high level of debt. Consequently, lenders might hesitate to approve a mortgage loan because adding more debt to your plate is risky. 43% to 50%: This is also a high debt level, but you may be able to make it work. You should, however, strive for a lower ratio for better rates and financial security. 36% to 41%: Now you're on your way. With a DTI in this range, you've got a good balance between debt and income, and lenders are more likely to give you a thumbs-up for a loan. Below 36%: Congrats! You're in the gold standard zone. With debt levels hovering here, you'll have access to new loans or lines of credit. If you have any questions, give me a call. I'm here to help however I can. -Megan Stultz Call or Text 936-5372587 Megan@MeganStultz. com www.FairwaterWestm ont.com

Opinion / Editorial Ruben My Time at The Border Borjas Jr, Columnist Ruben’s Montgomery Musings This column may upset some, and maybe make some see the light, but it needed to be written. I went to the TexasMexico border last week on a three fold mission. I had Veterans of Foreign Wars work in Feeding the Troops stationed in Eagle Pass with my VFW Post 12223. I visited my nephew, who is a Captain with the Texas
Army National Guard, and I wanted to go to Shelby Park, located at the heart of the border fight between Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and President Joe Biden. I had dinner with my nephew Thursday night, and the enchiladas along the border are more authentic than in Montgomery County, and this was the best restaurant in Eagle Pass.

But I still prefer what we have here, hands down. We are all used to Tex-Mex, and going back to authentic chow is fine every once in a while, but it’s not what we are used to. And I’m positive if the shoe were on the other foot, they’d feel the same way. I’m pleased, as probably most are in Texas and even New York, Chicago, and other Socialist city mayors, in how Gov. Abbott has shown Trump-like leadership along the border. Thankfully Mexico is responding, and sending back migrants to the Southern part of their country. The people of Piedras Negras, the town opposite of Eagle Pass, don't want migrants in their town either. Presidents have clashed with the Supreme Court before. Andrew Jackson and Franklin Roosevelt come to mind, but I don’t recall a governor doing it. The recent Supreme Court decision ordering Texas, a sovereign state, to vacate Shelby Park, only to aid a federal agency, at the direction of a bad President, so that illegal immigration is able to continue? That does not pass the smell test. The immigration issue is obviously the hottest topic this election cycle. And Democrats and Republicans in Name Only (RINOs), who fear a solved immigration problem will dissolve the
issue. They don’t realize that the 10 plus million illegal migrants still need to be deported. And not to mention the millions of military age men, from countries who hate the United States, and whose aim is not to Pledge Allegiance to the United States. If only those Justices could have grasped that, their terrible ill-fated decision could have been avoided. I saw an illegal migrant caught on video who hauntingly said, and I paraphrase ’’You will know who I am very soon.’’ And he didn’t look Central or South American to me. That is scary stuff, and Democrats don’t seem to mind the madness. I’ve written about the Cloward-Piven Strategy before, and if you don’t know it by now, then Google
it. Essentially, I’m depending on you guys to inform other less informed citizens, so they can learn about the dangers of the Democratic Party and the warped Democrat mind. The illegal migrants themselves are telling Gov. Abbott to send them to New York or Chicago because of their sanctuary cities status. So Greg obliges. Chicago’s stance against the bus companies has no ground. And I’m taking schadenfreude in those cities' busted budgets and bad leadership that have brought on their consequences. The citizens of those Democrat wastelands are now finally understand-
ing the damaging ways of their leftist voting patterns. And the chickens have come to roost. It has finally hit them that voting Democrat is bad, and they have been red pilled by their own bad decisions. On Friday morning, I went to Shelby Park, where I did a little on-scene investigation. It was a little busy, since Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, were visiting. The TXARNG Public Affairs Officer knew of my existence, but with dignitaries visiting, there was no sense in bothering him, so I snapped a few pictures and went back to my hotel room to do some work. Later I arrived at Camp Charlie where the bulk of the TXARNG are housed, in a pop-up city next to the
Maverick County Airport North of Eagle Pass. Thankfully the recent rains knocked down a lot of the dust that would normally invade every nook and cranny of my being, so I was appreciative of that. My VFW, along with nine other cook teams from around Texas, began showing up. Soon everyone started cooking. I stayed till about midnight, then I had to sleep, since the PAO from Shelby Park was expecting me the next morning. On Saturday morning, with the dignitaries having left the area, I was finally allowed into Shelby Park. I went in with a freelance journalist from San Angelo, and the CNN Turkey Washington DC Bureau Chief. Believe it or not, Turkey is very interested in our border situation. And not too long ago, representatives from Egypt came to study our border, to better handle their shared line with the Gaza Strip. Thankfully my hotel was less than 10 minutes from the park, so I was able to get the requisite amount of sleep to remain awake. I wanted to observe the actual conditions on the ground. And despite what the Socialist media says. What’s going on at Shelby Park now, makes Gov. Abbott look like a genius, as compared to the ‘Bumbling’ Joe Biden. Walking just feet from the waters of the Rio Grande amongst the walls of razor wire, I was humbled. Texas Troops are holding the line here. It’s a justified action. It’s effective and shows real leadership that is coming from the Texas Governor’s Mansion. Just last month, untold numbers were crossing without opposition, and now there’s … nothing. I wished that it could have happened earlier, but at least it has been done, and it’s making a difference. Feeding the Troops for lunch last Sunday really made my week. The Texas VFW was proud to salute the young members of the
TXARNG, who have had their lives interrupted because of Sleepy Joe Biden. They could be finishing college, or be in trade school, or working at their normal 9 to 5. Who knows how long their mission will continue. Obviously, Joe Biden has to be voted out of office, as well as Democrat Senators, and Congressman. Virtually every Democrat has to go. They’ve shown nothing but disdain for America, while enriching themselves. And there are still plenty of uninformed voters out there, ready to vote against their self interest in being successful in life. So I need your help in getting the word out. Obviously, what I saw in Shelby Park needs to continue. Gov. Abbott is doing the right thing, no matter the Supreme Court's decision. The fact that there was no opinion associated with the vote, well, it makes their choice sound weak. There was no ‘tell me why?’ If I were the Governor I would have ignored the order as well. There were conflicting issues, over proper immigration law, a state's sovereignty, and a federal agency's authority. In any case, it’s Joe Biden’s fault. Right now, Texas is the solution to the border situation. The Rio Grande can’t be dredged. It can’t be electrified. And until President Donald Trump is reelected, and the U.S. Border Patrol is unleashed to actually do its job. I’m convinced Texas will stand fast. We definitely need to round up and deport all the illegal migrant men of military age first. And how do we do that, you say? A bounty system. For money, people will turn in their own cousins. But until that time, Governor Greg Abbott will essentially be the U.S. Border Czar. And more power to him. Ruben can be reached at: ruben@montgomerycounty news.net
MCTXSheriff Crisis Intervention Team Deputies Win Prestigious Award MCTXSheriff Crisis Intervention Team Deputies Win Prestigious Award The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is full of men and women who regularly go above and beyond the call of duty. Today, we would like to highlight a few of those individuals. On January 26, 2024, The National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI – Greater Houston Area) held an awards banquet where four Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Deputies were recognized for their compassionate
responses to members of the public who were in serious crisis situations. Deputies Robert Burkett, Jay Villalobos, Lizbeth Rodriguez, and Specialist Jeff Lackey were recipients of the NAMI Greater Houston "C.I.T. Deputy of the Quarter" Award. Notably, Specialist Jeff Lackey was specifically honored for this work in safely talking a suicidal jumper off an 8th floor ledge, convincing him to come down peacefully and receive mental health treatment.

Sheriff Rand Henderson noted, "I am so proud to lead such a compassionate and professional group. These four symbol-
ize the care and concern all our deputies bring to Montgomery County every day. Well done!”

Pie in The Sky: Eclectic and Evolving Restaurant Review by Ruben Borjas Jr. It’s a place where coworkers or moms go on their day out to gather. Or where older couple’s meet to reminisce about the old neighborhood, or random friends converge over a cup of soup and slice of pie. It’s a setting that definitely can be described as … eclectic and evolving. And whatever you are there for, it should begin with a savory and end with a sweet. I’m in Conroe’s Switch this week, the little town east of Montgomery proper and the Lake Creek Settlement, where I’m being challenged to explore a little more of the county that ‘Montgomery COUNTY News’ represents. And since I was in the mood for pie, what better place is there to rest my weary bones for a while, than at a place with ‘pie’ in its name. ‘Pie In The Sky’ (Pie or Pies), is located at 3600 North Loop 336 West, in Conroe. Pie’s motto, ‘Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often,’ or another one that I saw, “Be Silly, Be Honest, Be Kind,” or my favorite, ‘Sit Down and Take a Slice Off,’ all have the feeling of a place that is welcoming. It’s the sort of place where you can see business deals being discussed, or recipes being swapped. I’m sure a few war stories have been bandied back and forth. And I’d wouldn’t be surprised if discussions on the Theory of Relativity haven’t taken place inside those walls. Pie just has the feel of a
cafe near a college campus, with intellectuals around every corner. But I wasn’t there to talk. For me, it was all about the food. And in keeping with my vow to digest like an alligator, I started digging in. I first tried the ‘Kicked Up French Toast’. Too bad Emil Lagasse didn’t invent
cream, and berries, my brain was near exploding trying to count the layers of flavor in this masterpiece. I was impressed with the texture. It held its shape on the outside and was soft and delicious on the inside. And the taste was indescribable. It was so pleasing to the palate, that you really didn’t

this dish. When you first look at it, you immediately think. “I gotta take a picture of this,” for it’s a real art piece. Made with 2 oneinch thick slices of Challah bread, dipped in a batter that was like no-other I’ve ever tasted. If I were handed a Kippah I would have worn it. The cream cheese in the middle, which bound each slice of bread together like superglue, held the line as if resisting an enemy charge. Topped with powdered sugar, house made whipped
need the syrup, which warrants perfection if you ask me. Even two days later when I had the rest for breakfast, it still held its shape. Next, I tried the Chicken Pot Pie, and I paired it with some Coleslaw, thinking of hot and cold tongue, and I’m glad I did. And you know, with this one, I’d buy some time, and let it cool a bit. Crack the crust a bit in several places, and let a little steam dissipate. Take a little break and discuss those

time. I immediately noticed some texture, which took me aback. There was a leaf of basil and bits and pieces of other ingredients. Pies uses an immersion blender, while I blitz (blend) mine. Next time I intend to hold back some ingredients. Ah, who am I kidding. On Mondays and Tuesdays I’ll take two bowls to go, and freeze one. Be sure and ask for some garlic rounds to dip in the soup, they make a great pair together. For desert. I had a slice of … every pie the place had to offer, and a bit of every cake ball. There is no sense in going to Pie In The Sky, and not ordering anything sweet. You’d have to have your head examined. So eat the sweets like I did. But do it in moderation, unlike I did. I went home and my blood glucose meter read not a number, but, ‘ARE YOU CRAZY!!!’ Just trust me, they know what they are doing at Pies. Their tried and true methods are textbook. They mean to please. Their aim is on target. And I’m surprised dentists haven’t started leaving their cards at the store.
Owner Marlene Stuvler, is descendant from a Conroe convenience store chain family. She tried college but it didn’t, and wound up back at the store. She started making pies in the mid-90s at her family’s store. Now that did take. In the early 2000s, she received some land on the current store's footprint. And in going with the flow of an unproven adventure, she named her place after the idiomatic expression “Pie in the Sky,” perhaps to the chagrin of her banker, but it’s not anymore. Pie is forever eclectic and evolving. Stuvler is a strong woman, and she’s given rise to the place. For it’s a great place to hangout, inside or out. If you haven’t made the trip, I'd advise you to put it on your bucket list. It’s a one of a kind sweets shop in the county, and perhaps the region. I doubt anyone would have the tenacity to pull it off like she did. For you can’t recreate spontaneity. Pie In The Sky has already done it … and it can’t be done again. MCN’s Veteran Of The Week: Bill Eustis
This week’s Veteran is Bill Eustis, 91. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951, and was an instructor at an aircraft engine school. Bill then left the Air Force after his service in Korea, and worked in the civilian world. He then got some religion and returned to service in 1965, this time as a Chaplain. Bill had a long career working with God,
and ministered to anyone who needed his guidance. He had duty stations in many exotic places such as Thailand and Vietnam, and claims to have no knowledge of CIA secret duty stations. Well, he could tell you, then he would have to kill you, but that isn’t very Godly is it? Bill did the Lord’s work, attending to the Spiritual well being of
the men and women wherever he was stationed. Bill served at many air bases in the Continental United States and in Alaska. He was stationed in the UK, Turkey, the Air War College, Rhein Main AFB in Frankfurt, West Germany, and Iraq in 1991. He retired shortly after his service in Operation Desert Storm, and after he left
service Bill became a Chaplain at Dallas-Fort Wo r t h I n t e r n a t i o n a l Airport. These days, Bill enjoys spending time with his fellow Veterans on Wednesdays at the Lone Star Honor Flight Veterans Group in Conroe, where he is a proud ‘WiseCrack Warrior.’ Congratulations Bill on being MCNs ‘Veteran of the Week’. In the darkest part of the year, The Players Theatre Company is bringing all the hair-raising suspense you can handle with the classic slow-burn thriller, “Wait Until Dark.” Originally on Broadway in 1966 and recently revived, performances of the Frederick Knott play are scheduled at The Owen Theatre in Conroe weekends January 26 through February 11, 2024.

men played by Sedrick Willis, Randall Packer, and Shawn Havranek, wrangle their way in pretending to be people they are not. Directed by The Players long-time Artistic Director, Joe Visor, the cast is a powerful ensemble of
