Weekly Stewart chapter, Promote Texas History Gas Prices (February 3, 2020) Texas gas prices have fallen 4.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.14/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations. Gas prices in Texas are 13.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 18.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $1.86/g today while the most expensive is $3.19/g, a difference of $1.33/g. The lowest price in the state today is $1.86/g while the highest is $3.19/g, a difference of $1.33/g. The cheapest price in the entire country today stands at $1.23/g while the most expensive is $104.90/g, a difference of $103.67/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 4.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.45/g today. The national average is down 13.3 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 19.9 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa$2.32/g, down 5.0 cents per gallon from last week's $2.37/g. San Antonio- $2.03/g, down 4.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.07/g. Austin- $2.12/g, down 3.6 cents per gallon from last week's $2.15/g. “For the third straight week, motorists have been greeted by falling gasoline prices in virtually every corner in every city and state in the country," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Oil prices continue to sag on worries over the spread of the coronavirus, blowing the door wide open for a continued slump at the pump. Nearly 5,000 stations are currently selling gasoline under $2 per gallon, a critical psychological level, while some 17 states have at least one gas station under the mark. For most, there's no signs of the slump slowing, especially with fears of the spread of the Chineseoriginating virus continuing to grow. Motorists need not be in a rush to fill up again, and with prices plummeting, I would urge them to be mindful that some stations are passing the drops on much faster and to shop around."

In this little Florist Shop, there is a meek nerdy Floral Assistant who finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant-man-eating plant who demands to be fed! Folks, believe me, this is a real science-fiction musical comedy!! This show has been around delighting audiences for a long time. Since “The Little Shop of Horrors” opened at the
Orpheum Theater offBroadway in 1982, it has charmed audiences in theaters and movie houses around the world. Based on Roger Corman’s super-fast, super creepy, super cult hit film, Little Shop of Horrors is the story of Seymour Krelborn, a lovesick clerk in Mushnik’s Skid Row florist shop who finds fame, fortune and a whole lot more when he discovers a strange little plant with some odd eating habits. H o w a r d A s h m a n ’s passion project began as a
seed of an idea when he was a Baltimore teen and first saw the cult Roger Corman film, “The Little Shop of Horrors”. Years later, as the artistic director of the-offBroadway Theater WPA, Howard acquired the rights to the movie. Enlisting the aid of composer Alan Menken, who had worked with him on God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, Ashman began writing the book and lyrics. The show’s action opens on Skid Row as Seymour Krelborn finds that the
strange little plant, he picked up in the flower district needs a whole lot more than water to make it grow. Seymour says to the plant, “I’ve given you grow-lights and mineral supplements. What do you want from me? Blood?” (Wikipedia). Indeed, folks the plant, Audrey II, named for the woman Seymour secretly loves, begins growing. And its demands grow bigger and bolder, as does the love between Seymour and the actual Audrey. “Suddenly Seymour is standing beside
you [the orchid plant] he says “You don’t need no makeup. Don’t have to pretend” But true love doesn't conquer all and Seymour resorts to murder, eventually losing everything to the dangerous bargain he made. Folks, this is a lot of fun for the evening and a Sunday afternoon Matinee with many surprises. For Tickets call the Owen Theater Box-office daily between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. at: (936)-539-4090.

Valentines Day and chocolate are two sides of the same coin; an edible way to show love and affection prompted by this holiday coming up. This recipe is so delicious it will bring a smile to the faces of all the people lucky enough to be on the receiving end of the sentiment that prompts the baking. Weather you make them to be eaten at the kitchen table brought to school or work or sent across
miles, these brownies are sure to please. Valentines Day has a long history dating from Roman times when it originated as something quite different than we know it today. It endured to be transitioned into a courtly romantic love expressed in poetry in the middle ages and then paper valentines in the Victorian era. Heart shaped boxes of chocolates appeared and people began sending valentines and gifts to anyone they loved or admired. To d a y i t ’s celebrated worldwide. Lately there has been much talk about gratitude and the key role it plays in
our mental and emotional health. What better time to be mindful of the people in our lives we are grateful for and to express that with a tangible gift. Enter food! I hope this recipe will inspire you to make it and share it with someone in you life that you are grateful to. It’s and easy recipe that is based on a German Chocolate cake box mix. You tweak the ingredients and divide the product in half for a bottom layer and a top layer then sandwich in between a layer of melted caramels and chocolate chips, then sprinkle generously with powdered sugar. It does need to chill
several hours before eating. Knock You Naked Brownies Ingredients: * 1 box (18.5 Ounce) German Chocolate Cake Mix (I Used Duncan Hines) * 1 cup Finely Chopped Pecans * 1/3 cup Evaporated Milk * 1/2 cup Evaporated Milk (additional) * 1/2 cup Butter, Melted * 60 whole Caramels, Unwrapped * 1/3 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips * 1/4 cup Powdered Sugar Directions: Preheat oven to 350
degrees. In a large bowl, mix together cake mix, chopped pecans, 1/3-cup evaporated milk, and melted butter. Stir together until totally combined. Mixture will be very thick. Press half the mixture into a well-greased 9 x 9 inch square-baking pan. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove pan from oven and set aside. In a double boiler (or a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of boiling water) melt caramels with additional 1/2-cup evaporated milk. When melted and combined, pour over brownie base. Sprinkle chocolate chips as evenly as
you can over the caramel. Turn out remaining brownie dough on work surface. Use your hands to press it into a large square a little smaller than the pan. Use a spatula to remove it from the surface, then set it on top of the caramel and chocolate chips. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from pan and allow to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for several hours. When ready to serve, generously sift powdered sugar over the surface of the brownies. Cut into either nine or twelve helpings, and carefully remove from the pan.

My Five Cents... Texas State Senator
Robert Nichols I hope that you all had a wonderful start to this new year. This coming year will be spent reviewing interim charges in our Senate committees and beginning to prepare for the next legislative session which will begin in January 2021. Here are five things happening around your state this month: 1. Immigration in Texas At the beginning of this month, Governor Greg Abbott announced Texas will no longer consent to resettling refugees. This is part of a federal program in which state and local authorities may opt into the program. Since 2010, more refugees have been sent to
Texas than any other state, and approximately one in 10 resettle in Texas. In addition to those refugees which were sent here through the program, we have been left to deal with immigration issues on our own, due to the lack of support and funding from the federal government. In May 2019, the number of immigrants entering the state in a single month peaked at 144,000. Many times communities are not notified before a large influx of refugees are sent to their town. This can put a huge burden on local taxpayers, overwhelm school districts and strain local and state support systems. Texas should be using its resources to help refugees, migrants, and all Texans in the state currently, before more are added. While Governor

Abbott has taken criticism for his announcement, I fully support his decision. 2. Bills That Went Into Effect on January 1st While many bills passed during the 86th Legislative Session went into effect the day they were signed by the Governor, many were delayed a few months to a few years to ensure state agencies and the public have time to prepare for the new laws or changes to current law. There were 24 pieces of legislation that went into effect on January 1 this year. These included SB 2060 which requires appraisal district offices to send an explanation, with the appraisal notice, of any homestead exemptions a person may qualify for and use. These exemptions can be for first responders, veterans, those with disabilities and Texans over the age of 65.

As Senator Cornyn said, "The lives of President George H.W. Bush

I am looking forward to getting one of these coins! 5. United Methodist Women At the end of January, the Texas United Methodist Women held their annual conference in Austin. AG Paxton Files Brief Supporting Fifth Circuit’s Obamacare Decision AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a brief with the United States Supreme Court today, arguing that the Fifth Circuit’s decision to d e c l a r e O b a m a c a r e ’s individual mandate unconstitutional and remand the case to the district court does not require review by the Supreme Court at this time. The brief also argues the U.S. House of Representatives, which petitioned the Supreme Court to review
the decision, lacks standing to request such a review. “The Fifth Circuit’s opinion declaring the individual mandate unconstitutional is a straightforward application of existing U.S. Supreme Court precedent. The Fifth Circuit has ordered this case to return to district court to determ i n e w h i c h , i f a n y, provisions of Obamacare are still valid notwithstanding the unconstitutional mandate. That is where this
case belongs at this time,” said Attorney General Paxton. “I applaud the Fifth Circuit for upholding the core principle that the federal government cannot order private citizens to purchase subpar insurance that they don’t want. I look forward to demonstrating exactly how this law has failed in district court.” When the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Obamacare in 2012, a majority of the justices agreed that Obamacare’s individual
mandate was constitutional only because its accompanying tax penalty could justify forcing individuals to purchase health insurance under Congress’ taxing power. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 removed the penalty, meaning Obamacare’s intrusive individual mandate cannot be preserved as a tax, and rendering it unlawful.
BRADY: Federal Railroad Administration Agrees to Hold Public Hearing in Rural Texas on Controversial High-Speed Rail Washington, DC - This week, in a meeting in Washington, D.C., Texas Congressman Kevin Brady secured a commitment from Federal Railroad Administrator (FRA) Ronald Batory to hold a public hearing to seek landowners and local officials comments in the rural counties impacted by the proposed Texas High Speed Rail. The agency,
which is drafting federal rules on safety and the environmental impact of the project, expects to announce in February the proposed rules and to begin to seek public comments. B r a d y a n d Te x a s Congressman Ron Wright oppose the contentious high speed rail project, and are fighting Texas Central Railroad’s efforts to obtain eminent domain power
from Washington to seize Te x a s l a n d o w n e r s ’ property without their consent. Brady said he was encouraged by the meeting: “All we want is for our rural voices to be heard. Administrator Batory is committed to reaching out beyond just Dallas and Houston to hear directly from our landowners and
community leaders about the impact on our rural communities including safety worries, damage to our rural countryside, and documented questions about the financial shakiness of this controversial project." The FRA is expected to announce the public hearing sites and dates as the draft rules are announced.

Do Not Be Pulled In Many Directions - Stay Focused Spreading the Word
By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net
At one point in my college years, I had the opportunity to take archery. I thought it was going to be fun. And it was, for a while. However, it took all my strength, ability, solid-still concentration, a well as eye-hand coordination (of both eyes and hands), to pull back and lean forward. I was fortunate not to let the
bowstring tit my ear, elbow, and finger as I shot toward the target…and missed. I was so glad it was only a three-week class. With the arrow, there were many facets I had to focus on and stay still before I could let that arrow fly. We can apply that learning to our Christian life, like this: First facet: Focus. This is the beginning of a life lived for Jesus. We first focus on His love for us as we find out about how He was sent by God to die for our sins, and to live as He did here on earth.

Second facet: Study. We find out, as we are trained, that there are some real dangers if we don’t listen to the instructor who teaches by the Book (our Bible) about the many pit-falls of the world. (That means pointing the arrow in the wrong direction!) Third facet: Eyes. We have to keep our eyes still and on the target. There are many diversions to take our eyes “off the prize.” T.V., phones, and games are just a few to turn us in other directions. Still eyes help us focus on the prize…and leave worldly things
behind. Pray to stay focused. Keep still. It’s in stillness where we can focus on the exact placement of our “arrow,” and our prayers. Remember to stay still. Remember to pray. It’s in stillness where we can actually hear His voice speak beautiful words of love and encouragement to us. This is the center of our day. It’s where we find our strength and direction for the coming day. “Let your eyes look directly ahead and let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you.”
Proverbs 4: 25. Fourth facet: Before letting the arrow arrive at it’s destination, think of the purpose of this action. Will it be food for your family? Will they glean important scriptures we share with them, as we bring them “manna” from our time in prayer with the Lord? Fifth and last facet: As we have shot the arrow into the very middle of the target, we have accomplished, in prayer, what our path is to be. We will gratefully follow Jesus through prayer and thanks all our days. In time, we
will have hit the bullseye consistently and have been able to now teach our loved ones and others how to also “hit the mark” of a forever life with Jesus. “Watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established. Do not turn to the right nor to the left; turn your foot from evil.” Proverbs 4: 26 – 27. Stand strong in one direction. Stay straight. Stay focused. You will hit the mark.

A brief statement of the nature of this suit is as follows, to wit: FIRST NOTIFICATION TO OWNER
This litigation arises out of an automobile accident that occurred in Montgomery County, Texas on or about May 15, 2018. Defendant was stopped at the red signal light in the 900 block of south IH-45 south feeder road. Defendant was in the far left lane, which is a left lane, which is a left turn only lane. Plaintiff was at the same location in the middle lane which is a left turn lane or a straight lane. Ambulance Medic #90 was in the right lane, which is a straight only lane and witnessed the accident. When the signal light turned green, the Defendant and Plaintiff proceeded forward. Plaintiff made a left turn in the marked lane onto the 500 block of Gladstell Street and Defendant proceeded straight on the southbound feeder road in the left turn only lane, disregarding the traffic control device (marked lanes and posted signs) striking Plaintiff with great force. After being struck Plaintiff did not move her vehicle. Plaintiff was disabled clearly in her marked lane. After striking Plaintiff, Defendant backed up and was barely in its marked lane apparently contemplating leaving the scene, although Defendant stated that he backed up because he was scared and wanted clear the intersection. Defendant was still in the intersection upon police arrival. Defendant was cited at the scene for Disregarding a Traffic Control Device. Due to Defendant's negligence, Plaintiff suffered injuries which required treatment. Even today, she is still suffering pain and discomfort form the injuries she sustained from this incident. For these reasons, Plaintiff seeks recovery.

Veteran of the Week
Michael P. Devous, The Woodlands
By Lew McCreary By: Lew McCreary, Contributing Columnist Born the son of a machinist in Los Angeles Michael volunteered (USAF) in Tacoma, WA. He completed basic training at Lackland AFB where he trained in electronics and communications…then gained more training at Keesler AFB and finished his indoctrination at Bergstrom. During his four year hitch he was totally in involved in all sectors and methods of communication for the US armed forces before separation as a sergeant. His active duty time was with TAC (Tactical Air Command) and SAC… (Strategic Air Command). His main area of responsibility was with army radio relay electronics and repair…as well as operator, and it lasted four
Montgomery County News has published VETERANS OF THE WEEK since 2014 numbering more than 200. The purpose? An endeavor to educate readers regarding the depth of personal valor and selfless sacrifice of patriotic men and women of WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Middle East deployments during their service commitment and the protection of the homeland. In particular these articles target younger generations that have not been adequately schooled in US history. WW2 still is the biggest event in human history and veterans of that world war are now in their 90’s so please thank them at every opportunity.
years…followed by two more years in the reserves. His primary “active” specialty was microwave radios that were often installed upon truck bodies and deployed out in the field. In other words, he provided service where needed…air to air and ground to ground communication utilizing phones primarily and including Krypto. Part of his qualification included routine training designated as TRC-66…better known as Tropospheric Scatter. Normally signals in the micro range practice travel in straight lines and are limited to line of sight applications in which the receiver can be seen by the transmitter. Communication distances are limited by the visual horizon to a maximum of approximately thirty to forty miles.
Tropospheric communication allows reaching beyond the horizon. It was developed in the 1950’s and used for military communications beyond the horizon until communication satellites largely replaced it in the 1970’s. Another one of his responsibilities was training Iranians but only while the Shah was still in power. The timeline back then was July of 1969 to July 1973. Amongst his collateral duties was teaching and maintaining communication equipment. Michael might have “cross transferred” to a new area and actually had orders for deployment to Italy, Viet Nam and Thailand. However, his commander overruled those orders… (Michael had become a key subordinate) as he was now
valuable in additional areas, including munitions, after studying/training at least six weeks at Lowry AFB. There he became very familiar with loading and arming bombs and missiles aboard B-52 bombers and F-4 fighter bombers in particular. He soon embraced not only the art of loading/arming he also participated in TDY’s…temporary active duty assignments. Michael’s skills also included bouncing signals…taking part in that area of training plus other challenging activities including war time exercises. Early in his childhood he became a Christian and was baptized (sprinkled)…but it was fifteen years later when Michael received the Holy Spirit and finally got “dunked” …i.e. actual
immersion. However, like some others, he did temporarily experience a “falling away” however he soon recovered. Michael also passed through another stage lasting only a short season. At that time Christianity was pretty much “all about Michael” …however he steadily progressed until he became solidly all only about Jesus
when he put Him and only Him first…and then concentrating upon developing a closer love relationship with Him. Currently Michael and his wife Linda attend Gateway Baptist Church in Spring, TX where he is a deacon.
