Not an overwhelming lead, but a lead none the less. Rolling into the first Tournament of the Spring Season we were confident, but definitely not resting on our laurels. This same situation presented itself 3

years ago in 2018-19, where MISD went into a January tournament on Sam Rayburn with the identical lead of two points in Conference, but left Rayburn in a distant 2nd overall in the points, after having the worst finish in the programs history of 7th place. The Conference was much larger back then with 46

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Food for Thought Diana Anderson

DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com

Sleep is one of the great mysteries of life. For a long time, it was widely thought that sleep was little more than a waste of time. Modern research, however, has shed much-needed light on the matter, showing sleep is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle, and that lack of sleep can have far-reaching consequences, affecting everything from mood, creativity and brain detoxification to DNA expression, chronic disease risk — including dementia — and longevity. Elusive sleep poses problems for many people in all age brackets and has been much studied of late. There have been some interesting tie backs to what we eat in the hours before going to bed. One of the most radical and recent discoveries revealing the importance of sleep for health is that each and every organ, indeed each cell, has its own biological clock. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for the discovery of these cellular clocks, all of which work in tandem to control and maintain biological homeostasis, regulating everything from m e t a b o l i s m t o psychological functioning. In your brain is a "master clock" that synchronizes these clocks and your bodily functions to match the 24-hour light and dark cycle. When you upset your circadian rhythm by not getting enough sleep, the results cascade through your system, raising blood pressure, dysregulating hunger hormones and blood s u g a r, i n c r e a s i n g t h e expression of genes associated with inflammation, immune e x c i t a b i l i t y, d i a b e t e s , cancer risk and stress and much more. Maintaining a natural

Good Times from page 1 Schools, but this was the only time in the Proud Programs History that it did not win the Conference, coming in 2nd that year. The 2021-22 Squad was not going to have anything to do with repeating History. As the Teams came up to the weigh in at the Cassel Boykin Ramp that was clear, as many Teams did well on January 29th. They were led by Mason Jones and Garrett Peel,

What/When to Eat for Good Sleep rhythm of exposure to daylight, and darkness at night, is an essential component of sleeping well. Most people in Western societies spend the larger portion of each day indoors, which essentially puts you in a state of "light deficiency," as the light indoors is about two orders of magnitude lower, in terms of light intensity, than outdoor light. To maintain healthy master clock timing, it's important to get bright light exposure during the day. Many indoor environments simply aren't intense enough to anchor your circadian rhythm. The first 30 to 60 minutes of outdoor light exposure during the morning or mid-day creates about 80% of the anchoring effect. This means that just going outside for half an hour at lunch time can provide you with most of the anchoring light you need to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm. Exposure to early morning sunlight can be another important anchor for circadian rhythm syncing. On the opposite end, you need to avoid bright artificial lighting after sunset, as light will impair your melatonin production Avoid eating at least three hours before bedtime, particularly grains and sugars — These will raise your blood sugar, delay sleep and raise your risk of acid reflux. Later, when blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), you may wake up and be unable to fall back to sleep. This explains why many people wake up around 3 a.m. and cannot get back to sleep. The brain is very active at night, repairing, regenerating, and converting short-term memories into long-term memories. If you go too long without eating or have chronic low blood sugar, at night when the body is in a fasting state, the blood sugar drops too low, and

who claimed 2nd place out of 161 Individual Teams from 28 Schools, with a very impressive limit of 12.29 pounds. They were followed very closely by Dallas Copeland and Evan Franks with a nice 12.14 pound limit of their own, which landed them in 3rd p l a c e i n d i v i d u a l l y. Rounding out the Top 5 was reigning Angler of the Year Cade “Superfly” Lipham, coming in 5th with his limit, weighing 11.55 pounds. All totaled, the top 3 Teams from MISD weighed just under 36 pounds, at 35.98, winning the Team Trophy by over 5 pounds.

your brain thinks you have run out of fuel. Therefore, it will wake you up by producing cortisol to help jumpstart the metabolic process and make you hungry. While cortisol is released in order to help reverse the low blood sugar level, it may also lead to blood sugar levels that are higher than normal. Another answer to the 3AM wakeup call comes from traditional Chinese medicine. 1-3 AM is the peak time for the liver to carry out its essential functions. When repeated issues occur at the same time of day, it could be an indication that the organ that’s working at that time is in trouble. A drop in blood sugar is a root cause of waking in the night, stemming from Liver ’s increased need for energy to metabolize life in the form of dreams as well as the liver’s demand for fuel to detoxify pollutants. Whether the stress is physiological or emotional, metabolism is taxed and waking ensues as the elevation of cortisol from the adrenals is accompanied by a release of epinephrine

and norepinephrine. These potent stimulating hormones will assuredly wake even the most sound sleeper. Of course, these hormones need not be tapped if blood sugar is balanced. Instead, becoming metabolically flexible is the key to staying asleep. There’s a simple way to see if unbalanced blood sugar is at the root of sleep disturbance. Eat an early dinner and don’t snack until bedtime when you will consume one of the following: a teaspoon of raw honey, a slice of lunch meat turkey or a tablespoon of coconut oil. Try each separately and see which (if any) prevent waking at night. Depending on which one(s) work is a clue to how

This Team Victory was the 3rd in a row for MISD, putting them in a good position at the top of the standings, leading College Station by 5 points, and Tomball Memorial by 6. Which by no means is an insurmountable lead, as the Senior Leaders on this year’s team are well aware of, as it was their Freshman Year when we tasted the sting of not winning the Conference Title. Mrs. Luedke and I are very proud of these young men and women of the M I S D F i s h i n g Te a m . Especially the Seniors, as they were able to go back to a place that was not good to

them last time, learn from that experience, and excel the next opportunity that it presented itself. The MISD Fishing Team will next compete on the fabled border reservoir of Toledo Bend, where they look to extend their lead in Conference, and continue on their march to win their 7th Conference Title in 8 years of Competing. They will then return home to Lake Conroe on March the 12th, where we hope to see everyone out at the MISD Stadium at 3:00 P.M. for weigh in, to support the Team, and “Let the Good Times Roll!.”

efficiently your metabolism is at burning fats for fuel instead of depending on sugar. If metabolically inflexible, the raw honey will likely be the only thing that works. If metabolically efficient, ketones from the coconut oil will work best. A protein such as a slice of turkey burns slower than the quick sugar of raw honey, but ultimately can be converted into sugar by the liver. Some people do best with a higher protein diet and a slice of turkey will maintain their metabolic needs while providing a rich source of tryptophan, the precursor amino acid to melatonin. This nightly dietary experiment can aid sleep in the short term and clue you

in to the resilience of your metabolism, but the longterm goal is to not need a snack before bed every night. The solution is twofold: mitigating stress to prevent a nightly cortisol spike and shifting one’s metabolism toward proteins and fats to become fat adapted. The former strategy can be achieved by journaling before bed to vent the day’s frustrations. The latter can be realized over time by having a regular diet of lower carb foods and practicing intermittent fasting or time restricted eating to strengthen one’s metabolism. With both influences in place, stress hormones remain in check and sound sleep is restored.

t h e f i r s t f l o o r, f i r i n g approximately 175 rounds at police. After throwing multiple firearms through a window, Julian used an aerosol can and cigarette lighter to set fire to the house, causing thick black smoke to fill the neighborhood. The Harris County SWAT team used a robot equipped with a

camera to enter the house, where they discovered Julian’s body. The cause of death was determined to be smoke inhalation. While maneuvering under g u n f ir e, th e f o r w ar d thinking actions of the Task Force to quickly evacuate those residing in nearby homes prevented injuries of innocent neighbors.

Gifting In A Volatile Market A weekly column by Kent Pendleton E S TAT E A N D GIVING During times of market volatility, it’s important to review your charitable options and opportunities. The coronavirus has financially impacted individuals and businesses, and market volatility may leave you cautious about making gifts. However, lower valuations can offer certain tax advantages, and temporary pandemic relief legislation is designed to promote charitable giving as well. Annual exclusion and lifetime gifts This is a good time to make annual exclusion gifts (up to $15,000 per person). Using marketable securities when volatility is high and valuations are down can provide for extra tax advantages on these gifts. Making larger gifts with low value securities

allows a taxpayer to remove assets from the taxable estate while retaining more of the estate tax, gift tax, and generation skipping transfer tax exemptions (currently $11.7 million). Investors who have concerns that the exemption will be lowered with possible changes in legislation should consider consuming a larger portion of the exemptions sooner rather than later. The IRS will not recapture these gifts if the exemption is lowered. Charitable giving As in 2020, COVID-19 relief legislation provides incentives for charitable giving in 2021. For taxpayers who itemize, the charitable cash contribution limit is still increased to 100% instead of the standard 60%. The taxpayer must make an election. The existing five-year carryover rule remains in place, and the election would allow an increased amount to be deducted in 2021 and less carried

forward. For corporations, the percentage limitation on the corporate income tax charitable deduction is still increased from 10% to 25% of the corporation’s taxable income for 2021. In the case of charitable contributions by partnerships or S corporations, each partner or shareholder must separately elect to use the modified percentage limitations. For taxpayers who take the standard deduction, the act allows an above-theline deduction for cash contributions up to $600 for married couples filing jointly who aren’t itemizing. In order for the contribution to be deductible, it must be given to a charitable organization described in Internal Revenue Code section 170(b)(1)(A). These incentives are only available for cash contributions and are not available for contributions to private foundations, supporting organizations and donor advised funds.

Charitable remainder trusts (CRT): Funding a charitable remainder trust with highly appreciated stock can solve capital gain tax problems and allow tax-efficient investment diversification. The CRT can sell appreciated assets and the donor avoids capital gains tax. To the extent capital gain income is paid to the donor, it is spread out over time. Retirement planning: The suspension for required minimum distributions under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) has expired, but the increased adjusted gross income (AGI) limitations for cash contributions provides an opportunity for individuals between 59½ and 70½ to have benefits similar to a qualified charitable contribution. They can take a cash distribution from their IRA and donate the cash to charity to offset a larger portion of their income taxes.

High-net-worth strategies: High-net-worth investors with appreciated assets should consider combining giving strategies to maximize gift tax benefits. * Make larger donations in cash to charity. * Consider gifting through a donor advised fund, donating long-term appreciated assets to minimize capital gains and maximize the 30% AGI limits for appreciated securities. * Plan for future giving and take advantage of the increased AGI percentage limit by additional cash gifts to a donor advised fund. * Use a combination of strategies to help take full advantage of the increased AGI percentage for gifts and receive tax savings on long-term appreciated assets. The CARES Act has created a number of opportunities for charitable planning. Give us a call to learn more about charitable opportunities

Females generally weigh around twenty pounds and males weigh about twenty-six pounds. Bobcats are named for their short stubby tails and are part of the lynx family. They have black stripes on their forelegs, back legs and on their “bobbed” tails. They are solitary animals and territorial although some male territories will overlap. Female territories are exclusive. Breeding season in Texas begins in February and this is the only time males and females are together. Litters range from two to seven but two is the most

common. The babies are walking at about a month old and they are weaned at about two months old. They stay with Mom until fall and then they’re on their own. Bobcats have excellent eyesight. In bright sunlight, the pupils close and become thin vertical slits which keeps out the light. At night, the pupils open wide which allows the maximum amount of light to enter. The eyes are protected vertically with an eyelid and horizontally with a covering called a nictitating membrane. It is connected to the corner of the eye and sits below the eyelid. It moves from side to side. Bobcats are carnivores and prefer to eat rodents and rabbits but have been known to eat mice, squirrels and even deer. If you’ve ever seen a

domestic cat before it “attacks” a toy, you’ve seen it stop, crouch down and remain perfectly still. Sometimes it will creep slowly towards the target and then pounce. Bobcats do the same. Bobcats are so quiet they often catch their prey off guard and can jump up to ten feet. In the wild, bobcats live about seven to twelve years but in captivity they live between twenty and twenty-five years. When seen in the wild, bobcats are sometimes mistaken for domestic cats. As a matter of fact, when working at a wildlife center, we had someone bring us a bobcat thinking it was an orphaned domestic cat. Thankfully, we were able to take care of the baby until it could be released back to the wild.

The Elusive Feline By Cheryl Conley Because I live in the suburbs just north of Houston, I feel fortunate to be able to observe many native species of wildlife. One of my favorites is the bobcat. I’ve only seen one and it took me a minute to realize exactly what was

NRI's Dr. Lopez had a chance to lay the foundation for the critical conversation happening around water in Texas beginning with this notion that 142 million acres in Texas are labeled as working lands—the family farms, ranches and forests across the state—that provide multiple benefits to the 30+ million residents

here. These private landowners are, and have always been, a key component in stewarding natural resources for the other 99% of Texans. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, w e ' r e undergoing rapid land-use changes and those changes are accelerating with every decade. Each day, we lose about a square mile of open space land due to 1) the estimated 1,200 new people who move to Texas each day and 2) the simple fact that most landowners are at retirement age and we're

experiencing the largest intergenerational land transfer ever, a phenomenon occurring not just in Texas, but across the entire U.S. So, what are the consequences of losing open space land at such a rapid pace? Watch the webinar to learn how losing basic land infrastructure is impacting food and fiber production and water quality, quantity and aquifer recharge abilities.

Local Leaders & Volunteers Spread Warmth on the Coldest of Days The offices of PCT 4 Constable Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden and PCT 4 Commissioner James Metts, along with churches, charities, and dozens of eager citizens teamed up on the coldest night of the year to bring some warmth to the homeless folks of East Montgomery County. well into the 20’s overnight, there were safety concerns for the homeless population of East Montgomery County. A warming center was set up by Commissioner Metts in the Community Development Center in Splendora, but most of the people would not be able to get to it without help. With that in mind, several local leaders and citizens started putting together a plan. Caney Creek Cowboy Church offered to start

gathering donations, along with local charities A Hand Up and Taylor’s Organization. News spread around and before long, blankets, food, hot chocolate, and other creature comforts were being pledged and collected. Constable Hayden volunteered to take the

wheel alongside one of his Captains, Buck Clendennen. The bus was loaded with goods, and became the impromptu “mobile” warming station as they took to the streets. “Heart and compassion are just as important as law and order,” stated Constable Hayden. “Times can get tough for anyone, and coming together to help others in need is what we do here in EMC. I’m proud of our community!”

Devotional Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

I believe that the word “love” is sometimes over-used and can lose its true meaning. For instance, we might say, “Oh, I just love the color blue!” There are many declarations using that word, “ l o v e . ” T h a t ’s a worldly kind of definition. For the real meaning of that word, we have to reach much higher and deeper than any comparisons made here. I went to my very large Webster’s 1828 Dictionary for a

THERE IS NO GREATER LOVE THAN OUR FATHER’S LOVE more in-depth meaning of love. So here is just a short portion of the whole meaning: “The ‘love’ of God is the first duty of man, and this springs from just views of His attributes or excellencies of character, which afford the highest delight to the sanctified heart.” Even Moses said to Israel: “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with

all your might.” Deuteronomy 6: 4-5. However, God didn’t stop with the dictionary meaning or t h e O l d Te s t a m e n t scriptures. He went right into the New Testament with even more verses and descriptions of what love truly means to all of us. In these three verses below, “love” is mentioned five times: “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the ‘child’ born of Him. By this we know that we love the

children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. 1st John 5: 1 – 3. Actually, if we read the whole, small book of First John in the Bible, we learn much about love; the love of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, altogether. Then we are equipped to walk in love and in spiritual power here. True love is

more than our one Valentine’s Day. It’s an expression of love toward the ones we love, but also it shows a depth of remembrance of love from our heart to t h e i r s . I t ’s l i k e a renewal of our love for that special person. Also, the card companies have made our Valentine’s Day special for others. It may include expressions of love to sisters, aunts, grandmothers, and more. Even as we pray tor them, it’s good to remember to express what they have meant in the past or present time.

Love is like a tapestry. It’s the gathering of two, then three, and maybe more, little squares of material that complete instances in the life of each person in the family. Then when put together they make a beautiful quilt of all the completed blocks to show the love of each other in their growth in the love of the Lord. How beautiful then, is the finished work of the ones who loved the Lord! Valentine’s Day is M o n d a y, F e b r u a r y 14th.
