Prices in Texas are 13.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 17.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 6.9 cents in the last week and stands at $3.99 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $1.36/g yesterday while the most expensive was $3.99/g, a difference of $2.63/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $1.36/g while the highest was $3.99/g, a difference of $2.63/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 5.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.17/g today. The national average is up 9.6 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 20.0 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: February 12, 2023: $2.95/g (U.S. Average: $3.37/g) February 12, 2022: $3.13/g (U.S. Average: $3.48/g) February 12, 2021: $2.19/g (U.S. Average: $2.49/g) February 12, 2020: $2.08/g (U.S. Average: $2.42/g) February 12, 2019: $1.97/g (U.S. Average: $2.28/g) February 12, 2018: $2.33/g (U.S. Average: $2.56/g) February 12, 2017: $2.08/g (U.S. Average: $2.27/g) February 12, 2016: $1.51/g (U.S. Average: $1.70/g) February 12, 2015: $2.06/g (U.S. Average: $2.23/g) February 12, 2014: $3.12/g (U.S. Average: $3.31/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $2.88/g, unchanged from last week's $2.88/g. San Antonio- $2.74/g, down 14.6 cents per gallon from last week's $2.88/g. Austin- $2.77/g, down 12.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.90/g. “We've seen the national average price of gasoline inching higher now for three straight weeks, but I'm afraid the worst is yet to come. With several major refinery issues persisting across various regions, the eventual transition rjas Jr to summer gasoline is likely to continue to put upward pressure on prices, with larger weekly increases likely coming in March and April," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "While I feel optimistic that the rise in prices will be merely average, the fact that we've already seen a few high level refinery problems doesn't bode well for the spring squeeze, and is a reminder to motorists that without the critical role that refineries play, we could see a bumpy transition to EPA-mandated summer gasoline." By: James M. Rankin, Sportswriter Montgomery County News Paradise, Nevada: The Super Bowl lived up to all the hype. It was a thoroughly entertaining game with all the thrills and suspense of a Hollywood classic. It was truly a competitive game. Analyzing the statistics, the teams were close in yards per play, first downs and time of possession. Yet, the 49er's defense were aggressive getting to Patrick Mahomes with three (3) sacks and had shut down their favorite tight end Travis Kelce in the first half; however, in the second half Kelce had nine (9) completions for ninetythree (93) yards. It is interesting to note that there was only one other Super Bowl game that went to Over-Time. It was the New England Patriots against the Atlanta Falcons. The similarity was that both teams came from behind to beat their opponents. The Kansas City Chiefs trailed most of the day and with only three (3) seconds left on the game clock in Over-Time, Patrick Mahomes found receiver Mecole Hardman for a three (3) yard touchdown reception to win Super Bowl fifty-six (56). The victory lit up the State of Missouri and all the Chiefs' fans in the stadium. It was an exciting moment in the game. There was some controversy concerning Coach Shanahan's decision to receive the ball due to the changes in the OverTime rules. The spirit of the regulation is clear cut and states that either team will be given an opportunity to have their offensive team on the field for a possession, regardless of an opponent's score. However, with only a field goal the 49er's open the door for the Chiefs victory. There were turnovers from both teams as the euphoria of the moment blocked their focus on the execution of the play. There were two (2) statistics that played out during the contest when Chief's quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw his first interception in post season play, yet led his team with passion and precision. He was chosen as the Most

They must address teachers and staff appropriately with "yes ma'am", "no ma'am", "yes sir", and "no sir" when answering questions. Students that are in Honor Guard are expected to eat lunch together and maintain good table manners. It’s quite an impressive system. “The influence I have on the future of these children is not taken lightly. It is a daunting responsibility,” said Mrs. Fulp. “I believe teaching is a call by God and I strive to remain faithful to that call. I love and respect the United States of America.” And Honor Guard members are still expected to maintain their behavior at home as well. Bed must be made just like in the military. The bedroom (barracks) must be clean and maintained daily. And even their bathrooms (head) must be maintained daily and deep cleaned weekly. The NWIS Honor Guard are flanked by members of the MHS JROTC and VFW Post 12223 They each sing the Star Spangled Banner for an individual grade. Mrs. Fulp and her students have a strong sense of pride for Our Country, and it’s through her personal connection with her students that she has been successful in her endeavor, and she will be that one teacher that has changed her students lives for the better. The influence of Mrs. Fulp on her students has been noticed by other teachers. She was recently presented with a flag flown over the Capitol Building in Austin in by her fellow teacher, Mrs. Stacy Slott. She had requested a flag be flown on 9/11 to signify it being a dark day in American history, but it was a day that also brought Americans together. It was a reminder of American strength in the face of tragedy. Mrs. Slott also in a big believer in Mrs. Fulp’s ability to influence a student's ability to believe in themselves for their

entire lives. "Mrs. Fulp is a throwback to the good old days of teaching. What she accomplishes with students doesn't require a ton of technology. It's good old fashioned memorization and listening to interesting stories about this country. The students love listening to her speak about American history and take pride in reciting important historical documents,” said Principal Larry Carlson. “Mrs. Fulp is truly a special person with a gift of influencing our youth. She is a strong Christian woman that commands respect. Our school, our district, and our community are very fortunate that Mrs. Fulp is here. She will be extremely hard to replace when she decides to retire. I tell folks all the time that I wish she was one of my teachers growing up. The level of impact she has on students is immeasurable". The tactics employed by Mrs. Fulp and Principal

Carlson, are remarkable. During the VFW lesson, the students were wellbehaved, and showed a keen interest in the program. The 5th graders even sang a song about the Presidents. Ms. Fulp has been announced as the VFW Post 12223, Teacher of the Year. Post Commander, F o y d a y, h a s a l r e a d y informed the school that the VFW will be going back to New Waverly in early March, to teach about the POW/MIA Table setup. Weekly Columns Five habits of 401(k) millionaires Expertise by Kent Pendleton, AAMS, Independent Advisor with Raymond James

RETIREMENT & LONGEVITY Although a million dollars may seem like a daunting figure, especially if you haven't been diligent about saving, there's good news: You don't have to make $1 million to save $1 million. Many individuals who are saving for retirement aim to have at least $1 million in their retirement accounts when they exit the workforce. But retirement savings aren't a one-sizefits-all matter. Instead, the amount you'll need depends on a variety of factors, including your lifestyle, specific financial obligations, future plans and health needs. According to a study, the number of 401(k) plans with a balance of $1 million or more hit 180,000 in the first quarter of 2019, marking a 35% increase from the end of 2018. While the circumstances of these 401(k) participants may have varied on the margins, all were average workers who followed a

handful of basic principles that enabled them to help successfully prepare for retirement. Below, we explore five of thes e principles, including how you can apply them to your financial plan. Start early A powerful tool when it comes to saving for retirement, compound interest refers to the interest you gain on a loan or deposit. And the best way to take advantage of compounding is by saving and investing early on. In fact, a recent study showed that the average 401(k) millionaire started saving early and remained invested for at least 30 years. As you may have read in some of our other pieces, compounding in positive markets – even at a modest rate of return – can allow you to increase an initial investment over a period of time. Maximize your contributions In 2024, employees can contribute a maximum of $23,000 to their 401(k) accounts, not counting any potential employer match. Depending on your income, maxing out your contributions may be more

challenging earlier in your career. However, studies have found that the average 401(k) millionaire contributed a minimum of 10% to 15% of their income year after year. Make the most of your employer's match Many employers offer to match their employees' 401(k) contributions up to a certain percent, and failing to meet this match is like leaving “free money” on the table. Even if you're not in a position to max out your 401(k) contributions, you should consider contributing the minimum amount necessary to earn your employer's match. Not convinced? According to one study, 28% of contributions in the average account of 401(k) millionaires came from their employers. Each year, employer contributions increased the average 401(k) millionaire's savings by almost $4,600. Choose the right asset allocation A 2000 study by economists Roger Ibbotson and Paul Kaplan found that asset allocation accounted for more than 90% of the variation in a portfolio's return over time. If you're a long-term

investor, you know that asset allocation has been one of the most important determinants of your investment earnings over time. Investing in growthoriented investments can help significantly boost your retirement savings through the years. While this strategy may not be appropriate for everyone, research has shown that the average 401(k) millionaire invested roughly 75% of their portfolio in growthoriented investments such as equity mutual funds. Avoid cashing out early As most 401(k) millionaires know, staying the course and maximizing your earnings are crucial in helping meet your longterm retirement goals. You should resist the urge to cash out early even if you change jobs. Instead, consider rolling your current 401(k) balance into your new employer's 401(k) plan or another option. Early withdrawals come with tax consequences and other penalties. It's also best to avoid abandoning your investment strategy in turbulent market conditions. Many investors who cashed out in a market downturn missed

part or all of the subsequent recovery. NEXT STEPS: · Assess your progress. If you haven't checked your 401(k) balance in a while, now is a good time to do so. Understanding where you are can help you determine a sound strategy to attempt to reach $1 million in savings by retirement. · Revisit your investment strategy. Is your asset allocation consistent with your retirement savings goals? Yo u r i n v e s t m e n t m i x should reflect your growth expectations and risk tolerance, as well as your time horizon until retirement. · Make necessary adjustments. Depending on how far you are from your retirement goals, you may need to increase your monthly contribution rate or adjust your investment mix. Working with Pendle Hill Advisors, we can help you navigate these decisions and work toward the retirement you envision. Kent Pendleton, AAMS® F i n a n c i a l A d v i s o r, RJFS

This impressive trio of siblings blew me away. Paislie, 14, is the oldest. Lane, 8, is the youngest, and Brylie, 12, is the second youngest. They were on their way to Fort Worth for some event, possibly to do with goats, which seems to be the trio's passion. They all go to private school somewhere in mid-county. Paislie is in 8th grade. She plays volleyball, which makes sense for being an athletic looking young lady. Paislie got a drum set for Christmas, and plans to be part of the family band when she gets a strong sense of rhythm, precise timing, and the ability to maintain a steady beat. She’s got a good friend named Jasper (a girl), and plans on majoring in agriculture at Texas A&M. Lane, 8, is a 2nd grader. He also shows goats, and plays baseball. His favorite position is catcher, but also plays shortstop and first base. Lane

says he can count to 100 if needs be. He aspires to be a Major League ball player, and he is still undecided on Texas A&M, but goats are probably in his future too. His best friend is Liam. Brylie. 12, is a 7th grader. She is a singer, who performs at church but also sings at local restaurants, mostly in other parts of the county. The girls are big Payton Riley fans. Brylie plans on being an AG Teacher or Animal Chiropractor, which is a profession I didn’t know even existed until she said it. In the family band, her Dad plays guitar, and as soon her sister is able to play the sticks and play, she will join the band as well. Brylie shows goats as well, and has done well claiming championship goats like her sister, and racking up belt buckle trophies. They name their goats after Top Gun characters, so they have to have

Congratulations ‘Pet of the Week’ Meet MISTY and MICKIE. Half brother and sister. They both have the same Havanese (as in Havana, Cuba) mother; but different fathers. They are owned by Colleen and Al, who are Canadian snowbirds from Alberta, and call the region home from November-May. Misty and Mickie are the first pets we’ve featured on MCN that have passports. Misty is almost 2. Her father is Maltese, so think Maltese Falcon and Cuban Cigar with her ancestry. Mickie is 3, and his father is an Australian Shepherd, of which the breed was developed in California, and has origins in Asturias (in NW Spain). Mickie’s ancestry is so complicated it would take a forensic genealogist to figure out. There is no doubt they love to be walked. Besides the Walden dog park, they also go to a dog park in Tomball. During the summer, Misty and Mickie join Colleen and Al on trips to places far from and near to Alberta. They are well behaved and enjoy their toys. Good Luck MISTY and MICKIE, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Pets of the Week’.

San Franscico was in the driver's seat and should have been the winner, yet with a special team fumble cause by a punt hitting a player; Kansas City seized the opportunity and capitalized with a score. As Coach Bear Bryant taught, “It is not the will to win that matters, everyone has that, it is the will to prepare to win that makes all the difference.” Coach Andy Reid had done amazing work in Kansas City and is worth his weight in gold. Congratulations to the Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs. Catch all the NFL action for the 2024 in your hometown paper.

Ruben’s Montgomery Musings

This column may upset some, and maybe make some see the light, but it needed to be written. For the people who appreciate forethought, the future does not bode well in reference to how things are currently being played out now in society. We have a generation of youth who since 2012, have had their lives turned upside

down, when Bar ack Obama announced his support of gay-marriage. They’ve since been indoctrinated by Democrats into thinking a boy is a girl and vice versa, not to mention infected with thoughts of hating our country. With immigration, we had a secure border until Noon, on January 20th, 2021, when

Joe Biden was so-called ’’inaugurated?’’ From that moment on, and for the past three years, the border has been a complete mess, so porous that up to 8 million illegals, or more, have crossed, and are now using city, state, and federal resources that usually are reserved for law-abiding Americans. Soft-on-Crime Democrats have literally killed (or Cloward Piven’ed) their own cities and states, allowing massive criminal excesses to go unpunished, drug abuse and homelessness to run rampant; causing stores and restaurants to cut back hours or completely close down. It’s a real problem for California, Oregon, and Washington in the west, to Denver and Chicago, Detroit to Philadelphia, Baltimore to New York, and I’m leaving out a slew of other smaller Democrat cities who are commiting suicide as well. I look at life through the prism of common sense, and the nil-on-crime Democrats actually believing that illegal immigrants, or some say ‘Undocumented Democrats’, have more value over their own fellow American Citizens, Veterans, and Homeless. It makes no sense at all. And all the while they are ignoring the illegal immigrants’ carbon footprint, as well as ignoring the environmental disasters they are leaving behind. And not to mention Dems downplay all the murders, sexual assaults, and other crimes they have committed, and it confirms my thesis that Socialist Democrats want to break down society to the point of turning the United States into a Communist Country. And the way that our Socialists are dealing with it, leads me to believe they simply can’t smell their own stink, or they just don’t care about the average American. And despite all that is happening on our shores. Right now Native Europeans are being inundated with a ’’peaceful’’ religion (And I’m not berating Muslims who live by the good side of Islam), that literally wants to see their heads separated from their necks. And White Socialist Europeans elitists, are in complete agreement with that concept. In England, the Bobbies, or police, protect Muslims rights to threaten to kill their non-Muslim fellow citizens. It’s crazy. Sharia courts, which currently have no legal status or jurisdiction in the UK, are up and running, but give it time for them to become a part of the official legal proceedings overriding UK law. Many nations in Europe have overplayed their hand with their immigration policies, and it is literally destroying their societies. Reality is thrust in their faces with lawlessness and threats to their personal safety, and a growing number of nations are pushing back like Greece, Italy, and Spain. Poland learned a long time ago with their Ottoman Wars,

to be wary of the followers of Islam, and they have not admitted any of the North African, or Middle Eastern migrants that have invaded Europe. Numerous countries are starting to lose their European identity, in many thanks to abortion, homosexuality, and childless marriages. Decades ago countries installed legal immigrant policies to help replenish the lagging birth rates of their countries. The problem was assimilation. It was mostly ineffective. Europe is handling their immigration problem by letting unvetted immigrants into their house, and letting them run rampant. My philosophy is, you don’t just let anyone in that you don’t know or trust. I’ve predicted that Prince George of Wales, the son of the heir to the throne, will not be king. Not when you have Muslims, who don’t abort themselves into nonexistence, and see Sharia

Law as a greater concept over European common law. Women and young ladies argue, my body, my choice, but, in a growing number of Muslim households, the woman is the property of the man. Mothers can’t pray next to their sons or husbands. Women are ordered to obey, and they have never been treated as equals. Why do Socialists always ignore those facts, when they have been championing women’s rights all these decades? Are the Socialists afraid? And what is there purpose allowing this to happen? Last fall The Netherlands elected a right-wing party into power. Led by Geert Wilders, he pledged to ensure that his country’s policies are in keeping with the The Netherlands Constitution. NBC News dubbed Wilders an “antiIslam populist.” which they said about the victory as a “stunning lurch to the far right for a nation once famed as a beacon of tolerance.” Well, when you’re about to lose your nation’s identity? What do you expect? A complete submission to a people who don’t respect your country’s laws, and call for non-Muslims to be slaughtered like pigs? Wilders spoke recently in New York, and his topic was ‘The Islamization of Europe’, which he called a ‘clear and present danger to the future of Europe itself.’ The mass migration of untold numbers of Muslims is alarming. And that by the end of this century Europe, within just a few generations, Europe will no longer be the place we have come to know as that tourist location across the pond. And it’s very

possible that in many countries there will be Muslim majorities. Europe has brought this upon themselves. By abandoning their laws and allowing for men of military age to enter their borders unvetted, and plot against them. It’s the same with Joe Biden, and his open border policy on the US-Mexico border. To overwhelm the bureaucracy, in order for the Socialists to turn the government against freedom and liberty loving people.

Wilders noted that Europe is already facing wide changes, and it goes hand in hand with Muslims taking over in incremental steps. First a street, then a series of blocks, then entire neighborhoods, which become ghettos; policed, not by the true law enforcement of the land, but by religious fanatics, who rule their fiefdoms with iron fists. And to be truthful, police are even afraid to enter the ghettos. And it's growing across every midsize to large city in Europe, where those peoples consider themselves Islamists over their own nationality. It’s scary when you have a growing number of people who have no respect for you, just because you don’t believe in their notion of God. I ask, why is Islamists intolerance tolerated? In Our Country, if you threaten to kill someone, you are generally arrested. But in European countries you are allowed to have signage saying you support beheading non-Muslims? There are thousands of mosques across Europe with plans to build supersized mosques, with the clear intention of indicating that Muslims are in charge. And right now, the Muslims are winning the argument from the standpoint of being able to do what they are doing. Cities like Amsterdam, Marseille, and Malmo, in Sweden of all places, the population is already onequarter Muslim, and in many cities, the majority of the under eighteen population is Muslim. And Mohammed is the most popular name amongst boys in those same cities. The influence of Islam

is intruding on the schools as well. In some elementary s chools in The Netherlands, the mention of a farm is no longer permitted, because pigs are kept on farms, and it is considered an insult to Muslims. In countries like Belgium and Denmark, schools only serve halal food. Gays in Amsterdams are exclusively beaten up by Muslims. Non-Muslim women are routinely called whores. In France, books by Voltaire, Diderot, and Darwin are deemed offensive to Muslims, and the Holocaust is no longer taught. All due to one segment of the population’s sensitivity to all of those subjects. Man, you’d think they’re Democrats. Women in France must wear head scarves if they even go near a Muslim ghetto, and in Belgium, they are beating up men for drinking during Ramadan. One really scary thing, Jews are fleeing France, and heading to Israel. One San Diego University study found that Europe’s entire population could be onequarter Muslim in 12 years, and be the majority population by the end of the century. The realism of nonassimilation is a major danger to Europe and America. When you have a good number of immigrants who demand immediate respect and welfare, having not put in the time or effort to be a good citizen. When you have Muslims who don’t seem to mind suicide attacks, or being in favor of worldwide caliphate? What does that tell you? There will be a reckoning on this issue. History demands its say. And it’s a really scary thought. What's gonna happen? Can it be prevented? We are just 15 years away from the 100th Anniversary of WWII. Will there be another mass bloodletting by intolerant people in Europe? All these incremental steps taken by Muslims have giant implications. Even in the United States, where the Socialist Democrats’ policy of wanting to control all aspects of every American lives, falls right into I s l a m ’s m e a n i n g o f ‘submission.’ Neither Islam’s nor the Socialist Democrats policy allows for anything resembling freedom and democracy. Compare it to Hitler’s national socialism, or S t a l i n s ’ a n d M a o ’s communism. For they are all totalitarian aims. Ruben can be reached a t : ruben@montgomerycount ynews.net

Restaurant Review

FOOD & DRINK

A Sip and A Thought: BreakWater Grille's 'Summer Sangria' by Ruben Borjas Jr. Breakwater Grille, bills itself as a casual dining experience, and it is. But the real draw to the BWG is its lake view, where patrons can grab a bite, a drink, and enjoy the atmosphere; either within the confines of their walls, or al fresco, under their sun shade sail or at one of the many picnic tables strategically placed on the lawn and open to the sky. Many may believe that The Grille is only for members of Walden, but it's open to the public. The pool next door may be for Walden members, but that doesn’t stop you from enjoying the bathing beauties come spring and summer, and not to mention taking a toast to their good health. Parents and their kids will come out, even on winter weekdays, to bask in the available sunlight; and watch their kids run around and release some energy. They’ll order a burger, club sandwich, some fries, or wings, and just sit and enjoy the remains of the day. Some may even order a mixed-drink, which was why I was on-station to enjoy. The BWG has a great selection of beers, wines, frozen drinks, punches, and your choice of popular

mixed-drinks that sound; well, some sound odd, like the Moscow Mule, or the Apple Jolly Rancher. But I wasn’t drawn to that, I had enough dealings with Russians in East Germany, and I never took to Jolly Ranchers as a kid. So I asked my server, since I was thinking that we are in the midst of winter, I’d like to try something springy, or summery. Heck, ’’Give me something that isn’t even on the menu,’’ I said. I got a funny look in return, then asked for the m a n a g e r. I w a s s o o n accosted by the supervisor, Fabio Matta, who incidentally had read one of my restaurant reviews. In my mind, I suddenly got a feeling of being a minor celebrity about town, and almost extended my ring for him to kiss. Imagine me being a bishop. lol. Fabio had something in mind, ’’Give me a minute,’’ he said. He soon returned with a concoction of his own m a k i n g , a ’’ S u m m e r Sangria,’’ he called it. And already I felt the temperature around me rise five degrees. I looked at it. Studied it. Initially I thought, It’s a fruit basket on some iced red wine. No it’s not. It’s a work of art. Why didn’t Paul Cézanne paint this? His avant-gardism

would have been even more heralded. I was determined to try it. I made sure to squeeze the fruit, including the cherry.

I t ’s t a n g y a n d s w e e t . Refreshing. Fruity. It reminded me of what a Carmen Miranda Fruit Hat would taste like sliced up, on top of a great selection of iced liqueurs, red wine, a fruity syrup, and a small sampling of mixed juices. I took a small sip and let it rest on my palate. The flavors were moving so fast in rest, that it would’ve taken a slew of traffic cops to stop them. The sangria went down smooth. Not overpowering. It begs for additional sips of enjoyment, but this is the time to relax, and let all the ingredients come together. After all, you’ve got time. That’s what places like the BWG are all about. You can spend hours eating, sipping, visiting, chatting to your heart’s content; all while taking in the lake view, and contemplating life and what it has to offer. BWG is a destination for trigonometry students looking to solve what ‘Tan (A-B) equals’. I can imagine poets going out there looking for their best inspired Iambic pentameters, or perhaps bottlenecked artists or writers hoping to clear that logjam of ideas that have built up their noggins. I’ve no doubt that couples have met here and formed relationships, as well as

business deals have been conducted. And why not? BWG is a great meeting place for a burger basket and a cold beer, or just with some Messi Fries and a glass of vino. When the swimming season hits, and with a Summer Sangria in your hands, life’s possibilities are endless. The real joy of the BWG is sitting around on a spring, s u m m e r, o r e a r l y f a l l evening and simply enjoying the atmosphere, even with kids and dogs running around. Seating may be hard to find at times, but come prepared with a lawn chair and your golden. Who doesn’t like watching and being watched, not to mention viewing the Sun as it makes its way beyond the horizon. Special moments are there for the making, especially on those days you’d like to go on forever. And it's all the better when you are appreciating sips of The Breakwater Grille’s ‘Summer Sangria’.
