The national average is up 16.7 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 11.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: February 19, 2023: $2.96/g (U.S. Average: $3.37/g) February 19, 2022: $3.19/g (U.S. Average: $3.53/g) February 19, 2021: $2.25/g (U.S. Average: $2.61/g) February 19, 2020: $2.13/g (U.S. Average: $2.47/g) February 19, 2019: $2.09/g (U.S. Average: $2.36/g) February 19, 2018: $2.27/g (U.S. Average: $2.51/g) February 19, 2017: $2.07/g (U.S. Average: $2.27/g) February 19, 2016: $1.52/g (U.S. Average: $1.72/g) February 19, 2015: $2.11/g (U.S. Average: $2.27/g) February 19, 2014: $3.19/g (U.S. Average: $3.37/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $2.92/g, up 3.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.88/g. San Antonio- $2.89/g, up 15.6 cents per gallon from last week's $2.74/g. Austin- $2.92/g, up 14.4 cents per gallon from last week's $2.77/g. “Roses are red, violets are blue, Valentine’s is over, and gas prices are going anywhere but lower," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "With Valentine's Day now behind us, we have officially entered the time of year when gas prices traditionally start their spring fling, but we've rjas Jr already seen the streak of consecutive increases in the national average hit four weeks. While the early start could also mean an early end, we still have as many as 8 weeks that gas prices typically increase, and anything can happen between now and then. One of the most critical elements to how much gas prices will climb is how quickly and effectively refiners can finish their pre-summer maintenance, start producing EPA-mandated summer gasoline and build up supply of it before Memorial Day." Sports Community CSO from page 1 French Horns. Even the triangle was beautifully played and made its presence felt in the piece. The Hoe-Down from Rodeo (with Rodeo pronounced Roe-day-oh), written by Aaron Copland, is commonly known as the theme from those “Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner,” commercials, and when played you half-way expected Tony Romo to come out serving a side of Prime Rib, because you could see a number of the audience licking their chops. The spirited piece incorporated American folk songs and a distinctive selection of high and low pitches that offered a sense of the openness of the range in the American plains. It was music that would fit in at a Square Dance or a Ballet, and yet the pause between segments. The yielding to silence. Almost begged for applause, and a few did. John Williams’ The Cowboys Overture, paid homage to John Wayne in the 1972 movie, a coming of age story featuring an aging rancher and a bunch of school boys on a cattle drive. Williams takes the score making it into a brilliantly conceived Western theme. You can feel the transference in the piece going from the joy of the boys’ effective teamwork to the utter despair of their mentor's

trend to better aid musicians as they play their instruments through the different pieces. “I use my iPad to handle all my music, and the foot pedal turns the pages so I don’t have to stop playing,” said cellist Mikayla Allgood. Her husband John, a flute player, also uses the same setup. The concert was underwritten by Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts. The Conroe Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1997, and was created to contribute to the cultural enrichment of Conroe and the county as a whole, assuring a better quality of life for everyone in the area. The CSO’s objective is to provide the region with the best possible musical experience, while creating music lovers and connecting communities. They strive to be recognized as one of the outstanding community orchestras in the state of Texas, and as a non-profit community orchestra, it is supported through individual and corporate donations, grants, and ticket sales. death, to avenging his passing, and finishing the drive. The audience appreciated the drive of the rhythm, as the music gave the sense of coming together as a team, overcoming hurdles, and taming fears to accomplish a task. Again a sense of the open range is present, and that is conveyed in the piece. Liebst afterwards, rightfully had his orchestra stand after the intensive piece to immense applause from the audience. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, written by Ennio Morricone, and arranged by Fedor Vrtacnik, invoked memories from the days of the Spaghetti Westerns in the mid-1960s. Who can forget the little drums and that quick five-note ditty with those four descending notes in tow, to start off, and the CSO did not disappoint. You could hear the characters represented in instrumentation, the softest for Blondie, the deeper for Angel Eyes, and the blaring for Tuco. It was a beautifully done piece, and one for the memory banks. One young fan, Paige Buschmeier, was whistling along with her mom Christine during The GBU. “I play the piano, and I’m trying to find my violin,” said the musically inclined Paige. “My Dad lost it somewhere.” Always blame Dad. But mom Christine said the family heirloom was safe in the guest bedroom, and Paige aims to play it one day.

Libest then followed with Frank Waxman’s The Furies Suite, from the 1950s movie. Followed by a Willie Nelson Medley, a trio, ‘To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,’ ‘Truck Drivin’ Man,’ and ‘On The Road Again.” Following intermission, the CSO started with Victor Young’s the Shane Suite. “I loved it, absolutely loved it,” said Pat Spackey during intermission. “I’m a big movie fan and it brought back many memories, and it's special that the orchestra is able to present a great selection today.” Spackey was highlighted by symphony President Bill Thompson, as being the ancestor of Charles B. Stewart, who is credited with designing the Texas Flag. Liebst then introduced guest vocalist Audrey Welsh, who performed several selections from Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun. With ‘You Can Get A Man With A Gun, everyone appreciated her Texas twang and hand gestures that made the vocals even more enjoyable. With ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business,’ there was no doubt Audrey’s performance invoked memories of the great Ethel Merman from the older members of the audience. For the CSO and Welsh, it was expertly performed. Wi l l i a m J M a r s h ’s Texas, Our Texas followed, with the arrangement done by David Lovrien. It’s our

State Song, and just turned 100. The wonderful vocal performance by Audrey and the CSO definitely showed our deeply seated pride and the continuous love we Texans have for Our Great State. A state that stretches from the Gulf to the High Mountains, from the Eastern swamps to the beauty offered by The Rio Grande, and to the deserts of West Texas. The audience responded with unanimous enthusiasm giving a rousing applause and standing ovation to the CSO and Welsh. To start the close out, Liebst brought Ervin T. Rouse’s Orange Blossom Special down the track, which had every foot stompin’ in the place. The CSO String Section performed admirably. The contrast between the violins and the cellos was fun to watch. And to close out the program Elmer Bernstein’s The Magnificent, of which you could swear you heard a few pieces of Aaron Copland’s Hoe-Down. As an encore, Audrey Welsh rejoined the orchestra on stage for the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans sing along Happy Trails to You. The audience was very pleased with the performance as Welsh received a set of Yellow Roses from an admirer. “It was a wonderful performance, I never miss t h e s y m p h o n y, ” s a i d season-ticket holder Donna May Clark. “I enjoyed the Finale from the

William Tell Overture, since I played that myself when I was in a youth orchestra many decades ago.” Audrey Welsh already has an impressive resume of performances under her belt buckle despite her current pursuits for her Masters. This spring at Rice University, Welsh will perform the role of Dorabella (Così fan tutte) in the opera department’s Mozart Workshop as well as the role of Dido in the mainstage double bill of Dido and Aeneas and The Rape of Lucretia. This summer, Welsh will join Des Moines Metropolitan Opera and perform the role of the Page of Herodias in Strauss’ Salome. “I love the City of Conroe, whose people are always down to have some fun and sing some great m u s i c , ” s a i d We l s h . Audrey, does so many events, between her major performances, she sometimes relies on the use of printed text. In fact, her next performance is with the Texas Medical Center Orchestra in early March. “Usually, I would have the text memorized,” Audrey noted. “But I have so many things going on with other projects, that I have it just on stand-by to avoid mix-ups.” It was interesting how several pairings of orchestra members have embraced technology, with large iPads and bluetooth devices to assist with sheet music. Weekly Columns Demystifying Investment Strategies: A Personal Insight by Kent Pendleton, AAMS goals. Buy and Hold: A Pillar of Perseverance The 'Buy and Hold' strategy is a testament to the power of patience in investing. It involves selecting quality assets and holding them over an extended period, weathering the ups and downs of the market. This approach is especially effective for long-term objectives like retirement planning, where steady growth and resilience are crucial. At Pendle Hill Advisors, we often recommend this strategy to clients who are focused on accumulating wealth over the long term and want to keep things simple. It's about looking beyond short-term market turbulence to the long-term potential of robust investments. Modern Portfolio Theory: The Art of Diversification Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) is centered around reducing risk

By Kent Pendleton, AAMS, Founder and I n d e p e n d e n t A d v i s o r, Pendle Hill Advisors LLC In the heart of Montgomery County, as the founder and independent advisor at Pendle Hill Advisors LLC and an Accredited Asset Management Specialist (AAMS), I have the privilege of guiding our community through the maze of investment options. Each week, in this column, I aim to shed light on financial concepts and strategies that can help you on your journey to financial wellbeing. Today, let's explore four fundamental investment strategies: Buy and Hold, Modern Portfolio Theory, Sector Rotation, and Tactical Allocation, and how they can be applied to your investment

through diversification. By creating a portfolio composed of various asset classes, each with different risk and return characteristics, we aim to optimize overall performance for a given level of risk. In my practice, I use MPT to tailor portfolios to each client's unique risk tolerance and financial objectives. This approach is particularly valuable in constructing retirement portfolios, balancing risk management with the pursuit of growth. Sector Rotation: Agile Response to Market Cycles Sector Rotation is an active strategy involving the reallocation of assets between different market sectors based on economic trends. This approach requires a keen understanding of market cycles and the ability to respond swiftly to economic indicators. At Pendle Hill Advisors, this strategy is employed for clients who are

comfortable with a more dynamic investment approach and are willing to take on the associated risks. It's about identifying potential growth sectors and adjusting investments to harness these opportunities. Tactical Allocation: Combining Strategy with Flexibility Ta c t i c a l A l l o c a t i o n blends long-term strategic asset allocation with the ability to make short-term adjustments in response to market conditions. This approach requires a careful balance between maintaining a long-term perspective and reacting to immediate market opportunities. My role at Pendle Hill Advisors involves guiding clients through these shortterm market fluctuations while ensuring that their long-term investment objectives remain the primary focus. Tactical Allocation is ideal for clients seeking a mix of strategic depth and market

adaptability. Your Trusted Advisor in Finance At Pendle Hill Advisors, we understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to investing. Opinion / Editorial Ruben Borjas Jr, Columnist Ruben’s Montgomery Musings This column may upset some, and maybe make some see the light, but it needed to be written. Thank goodness Montgomery County has some common sense about it, with leaders that are generally right of center, or else we would be in big trouble. We have a District Attorney, Brett Ligon,

who’s team of prosecutors will throw the book at those stupid enough to commit crimes in the confines of our border. We know that he trains his teams up, so we can promote from within, should Mr. Ligon ever go on to bigger and better things. I believe we will all feel as safe should that ever happen. We have judges that rule by the law,

Democrats Intolerant to Common Sense and don’t insert personal opinion in the decisions. Thanks to the efforts of the DA’s office, the J u d i c i a r y, a n d l a w enforcement, smart criminals do think twice about doing business in Montgomery County, but what if we did have Democrat officials running Montgomery County? Which ‘Cross my heart and hope to die’, will never happen. But in looking at Harris County, let’s look at County Judge Lina Hidalgo, and the corruption charges that have ensnared her office. I mean, if you were being honest in your work, you wouldn’t have a need to check yourself into an inpatient facility, where she received treatment for clinical depression. With her underlings being indicted, the reality of you being next would make Hidalgo sweat bullets too causing mental problems. Look at New York, and the vilification of former President Donald Trump. The infamous lawsuit that was brought by corrupt Democrat DA (and not by a bank), and ruled on by a corrupt NY Judge in a $350 million dollar fine, which in itself is outrageous. But of course since Dems never think of consequences to their decisions, it now has every possible investor (foreign and domestic) marking off New York as a place not to invest their

funds. Investors are asking “Who's next?” and rightfully so. With Democrats it’s called ‘Rules for Thee, and not for Me.’ It’s as simple as that. President Obama is able to enrich himself, while throwing the Black Community under the bus. And it wasn’t until Trump, who uplifted African Americans with his economic policies, that the Black Community saw any relief. Even President Joe Biden has completely dumped Blacks and has gone all-in on Illegal Aliens, or Undocumented Democrats, who are draining resource after resource that Democrat states and cities don’t have. Now getting back to that fictional Democrat run M o n t g o m e r y C o u n t y. We’d have a County Judge who would be using Democrat dirty tricks to skew the vote to the left as well find ways to enrich themselves like Harris County bigwigs. We would have Judges who would let criminals off for beating up Cops. Also, we would have a George Soros funded District Attorney, who wouldn’t prosecute shoplifters and be soft on crime. Basically, we’d be opening your doors to all sorts of criminals. Drug possession would be overlooked. Homelessness would be rampant, and of course they would be drugged out. And to pay

for their daily fixes they would rob stores blind, which of course, the police would be told to ignore. And not to mention the police would be vilified and many officers would resign for greener pastures. The stores would close in time because their bottom line is at stake, and they can no longer afford to stay open, causing food deserts in most of the county. There would be massive criminal break-ins of homes, businesses, and cars. Nothing on your front porch of any value would remain for long. Even if you go into a fast food joint to pick-up a hamburger, your car could be burglarized before you come back out. And even if stores were profitable they would eventually close down due to customer and employee safety concerns. Now the possibilities of all that happening are low in our county, but it is all too real in places like Chicago, NYC, Detroit, Cleveland, Denver, and big cities up and down the West Coast, where literally no common sense is being displayed by Democrat Leaders. None. Their laws are so criminal, homeless, and illegal alien friendly, not to mention they are so against business that their own voters are virtue signaling they will be voting Republican in 2024. In Chicago recently,

all the remaining Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants closed on the same day, plus a large movie theater shut its doors. And still the Democrats aren’t learning their lesson. In California, the one party Democrat state continues to defy reality with tax increase after tax increase This year, they raised the top earner income tax rate to 14.4% up from 13.3%. Starting April 1st, the next minimum wage will be $20 per hour for fast food employees, and people will be wondering why they will be paying nearly $20 dollars for a Big Mac meal at McDonald’s. And one California U.S. Senate candidate Barbara Lee wants the MinWage to be raised to $50 per hour. She is completely insane, having no sense of business whatsoever. Imagine all that in Texas, in Montgomery County. The sane (nonDemocrats) amongst us would go crazy. No one asks why Democrats are so tolerant of the hell I just described. My theory is that they don’t mind suffering, as long as everyone else is suffering alongside them. I don’t want to suffer equally. I don’t want to suffer at all. Especially when the suffering is caused by insane Democrat policies.

TRAVEL Cruising: Travel Adventures with Arthur Travel Column

Arthur Hermiz - Travel Consultant 777 Travel For all you Leisure and Business travel needs 281-541-1301

Obituary Is it safe to travel? With all the travel warnings from the US State Department, there are many travelers asking this question. There are 4 levels of warnings. Level 1 means exercise normal precautions. Level 2, exercise increased caution; Level 3, reconsider travel, and Level 4, do not travel. But what do the warnings really mean? Most of the Middle East and Russia are Level 4, which means “do not travel”, which is understandable since there are wars in the region and terrorist activities. The war between Israel and Pakistan has completely stopped travel to the area and there is no end in sight. This has even disrupted travel to Israel, which many religious groups travel for Holy Land tours. Cruising has also been

destination for Americans, has been issued a Level 3, “Reconsider Travel warning”. 4.1 million tourists visited Jamaica in 2023 both by cruise ship and by plane. Jamaica, known as the Culture capitol of the Caribbean, has beautiful beaches blue water, delicious food, and is rich in history and culture. But the country also has a problem with violent crimes, armed robberies, and sexual assaults. Between Jan 1 and Feb 3, 2024, there have been 83 murders, which is high, but considerably lower than the 109 in the same time frame in 2023. The Bahamas is another

has been issued a level 2 warning, “exercise increased caution”, in January due to increased gang on gang violence resulting in a high homicide rate. Other crimes include armed robberies and sexual assaults in both tourist and non tourist areas. Just recently, 2 female cruise passengers were drugged and raped at a resort in Freeport, Grand Bahama. There have been violent crimes all over the Caribbean, Mexico, and tourist destinations around the world. Which is why people continue to ask, is it safe to travel? If the State Department issued the same warnings for some of our own cities here in the US, there would be many cities with level 2, 3, and 4, including Houston, C h i c a g o , N e w Yo r k , Baltimore and many others. The key to being safe is to travel with groups and do not wander off alone. Stay aware of your surroundings and be mindful of your surroundings at all times, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas. Trust your instincts and avoid any situations that feel unsafe. And keep your valuables hidden an don't flash lots of money around while shopping. The key is to use to, have also been hit with p o p u l a r s p o t s i n t h e common sense, if it looks travel warnings. Jamaica, Caribbean, with over 8 like a sketchy place, don't a c l o s e a n d p o p u l a r million visitors in 2023. It disrupted because of safety concerns, as many cruises tour the Eastern Mediterranean Sea with Israel as a port. Other Cruises use the Suez Canal, including many world cruises, which come through the Red Sea and into the Mediterranean Sea. This disruption is because of fighting in Ye m e n a n d t e r r o r i s t s attacking ships in the Gulf of Aden. We will not go into the politics of this, but it is causing disruption in the tourism and shipping industries around the world. The Middle East is not the only area that has travel warnings. Closer destinations, where many travel

go. There are plenty of tourist areas that are safe and protected, and would make you feel more comfortable. A large portion of these countries' revenue comes from tourism, and they will protect the tourist areas more than other areas. Cruise lines have dedicated tours, and secure ports for cruisers. Jamaica and the Bahamas have shopping secure areas set up for the cruisers so they won't have to go out of the port for those who do not feel safe. Resorts have security measures in place, not even allowing cabs to drive up to the resort until they have been cleared by showing ID's and have the guests name. I travel a lot with my family and there are lots of places that we will not go to

outside of the tourist areas unless we are with a guide. That is the same for us traveling whether we are g o i n g t o N e w Yo r k , Cancun or even Houston. You must be aware of your surroundings and follow your gut instincts. My answer to the original question is yes, travel is safe. It as safe as it is around our local areas, as long as you are vigilant and aware, you should be fine. If you have any concerns about an area, call 777 Travel at 281-541-1301 and we can help you and also guide you to the best places to stay. 777 Travel does not charge any fees and can sometimes save you money and/or headaches during the booking process. MCN’s Veteran of the Week: Christopher Lumpkin This week’s Veteran is Christopher Lumpkin. He served in the US Navy, where he was stationed in Washington, D.C. as a Corpsman from 2002 2007, at the Navy Yard. Christopher worked in the optical shop for Naval personnel, and saw high profile Admirals, as well as ceremonial guards for the Navy. He would ensure service members getting ready for deployment

would be fit with multiple glasses, including inserts for gas masks, and back-up pairs. For a time Lumpkin worked in The White House, handling the medical needs of Naval personnel. Christopher was involved in the funeral procession for President Ronald Reagan, as well as the Second Inauguration for President George W. Bush. Following his discharge from the Navy,

Lumpkin worked in the optical industry before joining the Veterans Health Administration, where he now sees to the needs of Montgomery County Ve t e r a n s w h o n e e d Diabetic Eye Exams and updated prescriptions for eyeglasses. Good Luck Christopher, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Veteran of the Week’.

Local Veteran, Larry Coleman, a loyal Whataburger breakfast and coffee patron of the Montgomery Whataburger, celebrated his 83rd Birthday at the store recently with his infamous

coffee group. They brought him used Christmas cards to welcome him to another year on this Earth. And despite some bad weather, the Whataburger ladies on duty cheered Larry up with a cinnamon roll, a fresh cup of coffee, and a stirring

rendition of 'Happy Birthday.' “If I had known it was gonna be this good," said Coleman. "I would have brought my best set of dentures so I could smile. Thank you ladies for singing on my birthday."
