Texas Dynamic Duo Weekly Article by Mark Hooker Gas Prices
(March 7, 2022) - Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 44.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.71/g today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 61.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.21/g higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $2.69/g yesterday while the most expensive was $4.75/g, a difference of $2.06/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $2.69/g while the highest was $4.75/g, a difference of $2.06/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 46.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.06/g today. The national average is up 61.1 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.29/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: March 7, 2021: $2.50/g (U.S. Average: $2.77/g) March 7, 2020: $2.08/g (U.S. Average: $2.37/g) March 7, 2019: $2.20/g (U.S. Average: $2.46/g) March 7, 2018: $2.29/g (U.S. Average: $2.53/g) March 7, 2017: $2.10/g (U.S. Average: $2.30/g) March 7, 2016: $1.59/g (U.S. Average: $1.81/g) March 7, 2015: $2.24/g (U.S. Average: $2.46/g) March 7, 2014: $3.23/g (U.S. Average: $3.49/g) March 7, 2013: $3.57/g (U.S. Average: $3.72/g) March 7, 2012: $3.59/g (U.S. Average: $3.76/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $3.75/g, up 47.1 cents per gallon from last week's $3.28/g. San Antonio- $3.61/g, up 34.9 cents per gallon from last week's $3.26/g. Austin- $3.69/g, up 43.2 cents per gallon from last week's $3.26/g. “There are few words to describe the unprecedented rise in gasoline prices over the last week, with massive spikes coast to coast in both gasoline and diesel prices, as oil prices jump to their highest since 2008. Forget the $4 per gallon mark, the nation will soon set new all-time record highs and we could push closer to a national average of $4.50/gal. California could be heading for $5.50 per gallon with more stations charging $6 and beyond," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "We've never been in this situation before, with this level of uncertainty. As we lose a major global producer under the weight of deserving bipartisan sanctions for invading a sovereign country, the cost is high. Americans will be feeling the pain of the rise in prices for quite some time, with little good news foreseen." SOURCE GasBuddy
If you recognize the names Fallon Clepper and Wyatt Ford, it’s for good reason. This version of High School Bass Fishing’s “Dynamic Duo” are definitely leaving a legacy. In previous articles you learned that Fallon and Wyatt are former Anglers of the Year in the highly competitive Texas High School Bass Association, as well as being an integral part of the success of the MISD Fishing Team. They, along with a handful of other MISD Fishing Team members decided to dip their toes in another High School circuit this past Saturday, as the Bass Federation held a
tournament for High School Anglers on Lake Conroe. Fallon and Wyatt not only dipped their toes in, they went fully submerged, as they blew away the field with an outstanding limit weighing over 25 pounds. Captained by “Local Legend” Julian Clepper, Fallon and Wyatt had a strong day, culling up many times for their final five. Julian said that the pair fished “flawlessly,” and went on to say that “they were looking at them with their Hobie Sightmasters.” He went on to indicate that “soft plastic creature baits played a big role.” Knowing Fallon and Wyatt, I’m sure that meant they had Strike King Rage Craws rigged on St. Croix Rods! Also doing well for MISD, securing 2nd place were Cade Lipham and Will Collora. These Lake Creek Seniors brought a 5 fish limit to the scales that weighed in at 17.15 pounds. Will stated “that we were primarily Bed Fishing, with a Strike King Rage Menace doing most of the damage for us.” The big fish of the tournament was caught by the Team of Preston Burch

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Italian Wedding Soup Food for Thought Diana Anderson
DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com
I’ve written about the satisfaction of bowl food at this time of year, but there’s another style of food that’s equally comforting in the winter: meatballs. After all, who doesn’t like a good meatball? Meatballs come in all sizes—small, large, patties—with different types of protein (beef, pork, lamb, turkey, chicken, and even fish), while variations effortlessly veer away from “meat” to other star ingredients, such as pulses, beans, and grains. In other words, meatballs are versatile and universally pleasing to eat, appealing to most diets and preferences. They are also efficiently economical, a great way to stretch inexpensive ingredients, and they can be frozen or refrigerated for later use, which is ideal for an easy weeknight meal. This soup recipe is a twofer. It’s a steaming bowl of comforting soup packed with turkey meatballs floating in a nourishing chicken broth. The recipe takes inspiration from
SHSU from page 1 will be presented in April at the 2022 Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope Gala presented by Woodforest National Bank. The relationship between the Sam Houston State School of Nursing and the Montgomery County Food Bank dates back to 2018 when the students began volunteering in order to fulfil their degree requirements. Over the years, the relationship has grown into something bigger than course credit with students committing their valuable free time to their volunteer work. “Sam Houston State University School of Nursing played a significant role in the food bank’s record-breaking impact in 2021,” said Kristine Marlow, President and CEO of Montgomery County Food Bank. “The students’ steadfast passion and servant hearts allowed Montgomery County Food Bank to remain a lifeline to those facing hunger in our county during a very uncertain time. I am so grateful to each of them for volunteering their time with us, and I look forward to honoring the School of Nursing at our Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope Gala.” Montgomery County Food Bank’s mission is to unite the community to fight hunger. In 2021, they were able to provide over 9.6 million nutritional meals through their vast network of over 70 partner pantries, local school districts, and community partners. “In the height of the
an Italian wedding soup, a classic Italian American vegetable and meatball soup (and to be clear, the term “wedding” refers to the marriage of its ingredients, not the celebration of a romantic union). There are numerous iterations of an Italian wedding soup. The meatballs can be made of chicken, turkey, beef, or pork, which mingle with diced aromatics, such as onion, carrot, and celery. For extra substance, the soup sometimes includes pasta. In other words, how you make it is open to your interpretation, taste, and the contents of your refrigerator. In this recipe, I’ve omitted the pasta and amped up the flavor of the broth and meatballs with copious amounts of cheese. While Parmesan is a popular go-to, I find that the salty sharpness of pecorino Romano adds more “oomph” and flavor to the meatballs. A hunk of cheese rind is added to the broth (a humble and effective no-waste technique to build flavor and body), which accentuates a cheesy-umami richness in an otherwise simple soup. If you would like to add some pasta, try orzo or a small tubular pasta, such as ditalini—and note that you
may need to add more stock, since the pasta will absorb some as it cooks. If you don’t have homemade stock on hand, a good-quality store-bought chicken stock will easily stand in for a quick weeknight dinner. Cheesy Turkey Meatball Soup Active Time: 45 minutes Total Time: 45 minutes, plus chilling time Serves: 4 to 5, makes about 16 meatballs For the Meatballs * 1 pound ground turkey (or chicken) * 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs * 1/4 cup packed finely grated Pecorino Romano cheese * 2 tablespoons chopped Italian parsley leaves * 1 large garlic clove, minced * 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt * 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano * 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper * 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional) * Vegetable oil For the Soup * 1 medium onion, chopped * 1 large carrot, sliced * 1 celery stalk, diced * Kosher salt * 5 to 6 cups chicken stock * 1 (2-inch) chunk
Parmesan rind * 1 bay leaf * 1 teaspoon dried thyme * 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper * 2 cups spinach leaves or coarsely chopped kale leaves * Grated pecorino Romano or Parmesan cheese for sprinkling Combine the meatball ingredients (excluding oil) in a bowl and mix to blend. Form into 1-inch meatballs, flatten slightly, and place on a plate. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or soup pot. Add the meatballs in one layer without overcrowding, in batches if necessary. Brown on both sides, turning when they release easily from the pan, about 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel (they will finish cooking in the soup). Add 1 tablespoon of oil to the pan. Add the onion, carrots, celery, and a pinch of salt to the skillet and sauté until the vegetables are bright and tender, 3 to 4 minutes, stirring up any brown bits. Add the stock, cheese, bay leaf, thyme, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and the black pepper. Partially cover the pot and simmer over medium heat for about 15 minutes. Add the meatballs and continue to cook until the
meatballs are fully cooked, 8 to 10 minutes more. Stir in the greens and cook until wilted, 1 t o 2 m i n u t e s . Ta s t e f o r seasoning and add more salt and pepper if desired. Ladle into bowls and serve with the cheese for sprinkling. As an aside it’s good to know there is a difference between Parmesan and Pecorino Romano. On the grand scale of cheeses, from Brie to Limburger, Pecorino and Parmesan can seem similar. Both are hard salty cheeses from Italy, and they’re both frequently in the mix with pasta. However, they’re not the same cheese. If you lay a slice of Pecorino Romano next to a slice of Parmesan, you’ll notice some differences right away. Pecorino is whiter and slightly softer. Parmesan is more golden, and very hard and dry. Now take a taste. Overall, Parmesan has a nuttier f l a v o r. T h e s u p e r - a g e d Parmesans can even have a hint of caramel flavor. Pecorino will be brighter, with grassier flavor and sharp saltiness. These differences are a result of different production methods. Parmesan is made from cow’s milk. It must be aged for at least 12 months. The aging process helps create the nutty,

fruits and vegetables, which emphasizes the importance of sustainability and promotes healthy food choices. Nursing student, Bailey Welcome, shared her experience. “I volunteered in the produce rescue center at the Montgomery County Food Bank. I expected to just go into my shift, quickly inspect donated products and be done, but by the end of my shift I was blown away,” Welcome said. “We were able to keep 6,529 pounds of food that would go into the hands of 2,720 families in Montgomery County. Not only was this food going to families in need, but also children, who unfortunately, do not have the funds to buy lunch at school.” This partnership was an easy collaboration because service to others is always front and center at SHSU, according to Director of the School of Nursing Devon Berry. “We are always looking to score those triple wins: value for the student, value for our community, and value for the agencies we partner with,” Berry said. “Our partnership with the Montgomery County Food Bank checks all three boxes and is an example of the best we have to offer as a serviceminded academic institution.” The gala theme this year is “One For The Records,” in order to spotlight the recordbreaking work of the food bank, its volunteers, and community partners in 2020 and 2021. Their vision of a community where everyone has access to sufficient, nutritious food is possible through the support of volunteers and community

“Initially, we started out serving and learning from the Food Bank but now we have a true partnership as together we have started thinking of ways to help college students who are food insecure,” James said. “I almost always stay with the students to help sort food when they are there as a group. I hope that they see in me the love I have for helping those in need and spur them to volunteer with any organization to help fill a community need and create happiness for themselves.” The food bank works in partnership with retailers and wholesalers to provide a solution for food waste by rescuing food that would otherwise go to the landfill. complex flavor that Parmesan is known for. This hard, crumbly cheese gets its name from the region in which it’s produced. True ParmigianoReggiano must be made in one of five provinces within Emilia-Romagna. Parmesan cheese can be thinly sliced and served as an appetizer or grated over salads or pastas. Grated Parmesan can also be mixed into meatballs. Basically, no matter what you sprinkle it on, it will add a pop of savory saltiness. Pecorino, and its most f a m o u s f a m i l y m e m b e r, Pecorino Romano, is also a hard, salty cheese. At first glance, Pecorino may seem like Parmesan, but it’s far from identical. Pecorino Romano is made from sheep’s cheese, which gives it a more grassy and earthy flavor. Pecorino is also typically younger than Parmesan. The minimum aging requirement for Pecorino is only 5-8 months. This creates a slightly more moist, greener tasting cheese. Pecorino Romano is the star of cacio e pepe, where the tangy character it gets from s h e e p ’s c h e e s e h a s a n opportunity to shine. Pecorino also works well as a grating cheese and will be delicious over pasta and salads.

Weekly Columns
February Market Review A weekly column by Kent Pendleton Domestic and emerging markets have seen continued volatility over the past few months. February was no exception with the broad-market S&P 500 dipping into its first 10% correction in almost two years as geopolitical tensions intensified. The last week of February brought the somber news of escalating conflict in
Eastern Europe. I along with many of you, hope for a peaceful resolution soon without further loss of life. Here’s what else we’re keeping an eye on: * While the conflict is troubling, the biggest financial impact is likely to be increased prices on commodities produced in the region, namely oil, natural gas, wheat, palladium and aluminum, which would weigh on consumer spending. * The Fed is expected to start raising short-term
interest rates in March and begin reducing its balance sheet later this year. * The crisis will weigh on a market already struggling with high inflation and the coming transition to tighter monetary policy. The bottom line: A late rally helped the S&P 500 reverse some of its earlier losses for the month. However, we expect to see more market turbulence over the next several months. GOING HOG WILD By Cheryl Conley
If you’re new to Texas or a city-dweller, you may not be familiar with feral hogs, also known as wild pigs. Growing up in South Dakota, I was used to seeing hogs being raised on farms but soon after moving to an
acreage near Houston, I became very familiar with feral hogs. Pigs were first introduced to the United States as free-ranging livestock by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539 when he

Invasive species have two main characteristics: they are non-native to the ecosystem and their existence causes or is likely to cause harm to the environment or human health. Wild pigs can be found in at least 35 states. Currently, the wild pig population in the USA is estimated to be over 6 million. damage they leave behind will let you know they’ve been there. In addition to destroying fields and yards in search of food, wild pigs carry transmittable and zoonotic diseases. Some of them are rabies, swine brucellosis, and E. coli bacteria, Domestic pigs, humans, and pets can catch these wild hog diseases. During the summer of 2021 I, as well as many of my neighbors, experienced firsthand the damage they can do. Our lawns looked like they had been recently plowed and my sprinkler system was damaged. This happened numerous times. I researched how
to get rid of them and came up empty handed. One article I read said to remove their food source. Well, I can’t remove my lawn! The article also said that pigs can be hunted. That’s wasn’t going to happen. The solution for me was to fence my yard. Ten thousand dollars later, the problem was resolved. If you’re dealing with wild pigs, all I can say is that I feel your pain! They are indeed a nuisance. THE PICTURE IS NOT THE AUTHOR’S YARD. IT’S JUST TO SHOW THE DAMAGE PIGS CAN DO.

This Ain’t Our First Rodeo By: U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas Barrel racing, mutton bustin’, and bull riding are just some of the many events you can catch at one of Texas’ many rodeos. Recognized as the official sport of Texas, the history of rodeos in the Lone Star State dates much further back than its official proclamation by the Texas Legislature 25 years ago. The Spanish conquistadors and Spanish-Mexican settlers that first arrived in Texas came with horses and cattle, kicking off our state’s rich and deep roots in the livestock industry.
This new livestock led to the rise of ranchers and vaqueros, or cowboys. After the Civil War, the Southwest became the hub for cattle drives, large ranches, and range cowboys which are now pillars of the celebrated culture we know today. While overseeing their pastures and driving cattle, these cowboys earned their spurs learning how to rope, ride, and wrangle livestock. These tricks of the trade traveled throughout Te x a s , a n d c o w b o y s showcased these skills at

local rodeos. The word “rodeo” came from a Spanish word meaning “round up,” an incredibly important activity where cattlemen gather their cattle to brand the new calves or move them to new pastures. The first official rodeo took place in 1883 in Pecos, Texas. The Pecos Rodeo began as a competition for bragging rights between two cowboys duking it out to see who was the best in Texas. 140 years later, this renown rodeo continues to this day and attracts some serious competitors. As more cowboys were crowned rodeo champions across the Lone Star State and the country, a unified effort to grab the reins and organize official competitions began. In 1936, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association established official rules to formalize the sport nationwide. By 1948, a determined group of women met in San Angelo,

sential to the rodeo experience with numerous events such as saddle bronc riding and team roping. To date this rodeo has been one of the most watched on television, with over 8 million households tuning into the events. Following the trailheads south from Mesquite, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo always rounds up quite a crowd. Previously known as the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition, this rodeo began in 1931 at the Texas State Hotel as a way to grow the area’s cattle industry. More than 90 years later, this event moved to the Astrodome, and it now takes place at the neighboring NRG Stadium which was specially built for rodeo and the NFL. Cowboys and rodeo enthusiasts of all ages can enjoy the annual kick-off rodeo parade, trail rides, and concerts from a variety of music genres. The King of Country, George Strait, even
debuted at the Houston Rodeo as a newcomer to the country music scene way back in 1983. This year, I had the honor to saddle up on a horse named Cinch and ride in the Houston Rodeo kick-off parade, as I have frequently done in the past. Apart from living out my John Wayne dreams, it is a great chance to visit with Texans who support this great tradition that marks the start of the three weeklong event thanks to the help from over 35,000 volunteers. The Houston Rodeo also awards over $14 million to the bright minds of student cowboys and cowgirls across our state, with $1.4 million going towards Texas 4-H scholarships. Regardless if you’re competing in the stock show and rodeo events or just wanting to horse around, I hope you find a chance to wrangle up your friends and family and rope them into going to the local rodeo this year.

Texas with a mission to jump into the ring and create the Girls Rodeo Association, known now as the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. The Association became the United States’ first women’s sports organization and still remains as the oldest women’s professional sports organization in the country. These visionaries branded themselves as trailblazers for women in the rodeo arena. Today, the Association is the only rodeo organization governed entirely by women and they work year-round to host competitive events across the nation. No one deserves the grand champion belt buckle more than Mesq u i t e , Te x a s . S i n c e Mesquite hosts the most rodeos in our state, the Texas Legislature declared Mesquite the official rodeo capital of Texas in 1993. For over 60 years, the Mesquite Championship Rodeo has been quintes-
his colleagues to sign on to the letter. "We must take steps to protect Texas Taxpayer Assets from Totalitarian Regimes that go to war on Democracies without reason or provocation, and could change investment rules at the snap of a finger," stated Senator Bettencourt. In order to protect the state's investment assets and condemn this Russian Federation aggression, the following interim charge is proposed: "An interim charge to study the feasibility that calls for the state's comptroller to, "prepare and maintain, and provide to each state governmental entity, a list of all companies that invest in the Russian Federation." The state's asset owners would be required to notify those companies of their inclusion on the list and give 90 days to divest their positions. Senator Whitmire, the
Dean of the Senate, said,"It's time to set partisanship aside and unite to do everything we can to isolate Russia from any Texas economic ties." T h e U . S . Tr e a s u r y Department has imposed sanctions and limited the financial capabilities of certain individuals, banks, and financial markets in the Russian Federation. Following their countrywide attack, it is clear that the invasion not only imposes a risk to world stability, but also a potential risk of investment losses if a state government entity has funds currently invested in Russia or Russian Federation associated equities. The language in the Interim Charge Request mirrors the type language in Senate Bill 13 from the Regular Session which passed 28 to 3 dealing with financial company boycotts. Governor Abbott signed it on June 14, 2021. It became effective on
September 1, 2021. "Because Texas was an Independent Republic, our Texan Hearts go out to those Ukrainians fighting for their freedom as Texans once did, especially on this day, March 2nd, Texas Independence Day," concluded Senator Bettencourt. If those investments are not changed in 90 days, the state funds would be required to, "sell, redeem, divest, or withdraw all publicly traded securities of the company." The funds that would be subject to possible divestment include: Texas Teacher Retirement System, Texas County & District Retirem e n t S y s t e m , Te x a s Permanent School Fund, Texas Municipal Retirem e n t S y s t e m , Te x a s Employees Retirement System, Texas Emergency Services Retirement System, and UTIMCO.
U.S. National Average Price of Gasoline Hits New All-Time Record High March 07, 2022 Previous record of $4.10 per gallon set in 2008 has fallen as gas prices continue to rise BOSTON (March 7, 2022) -- The national average price of gasoline in the U.S. today broke the existing record, rewriting the all-time high to today’s $4.104 per gallon, according to GasBuddy, the leading fuel savings platform saving North American drivers the most money on gas. The previous all-time high was set back in 2008 at $4.103 per gallon, just ahead of the U.S. Great Recession and housing crisis. The national average price of diesel is also nearing a new record, now at $4.63 per gallon,
likely to break the record of $4.846 per gallon in the next two weeks. In addition to setting a new all-time high, the national average is seeing its largest ever 7 day spike: 49.1 cents per gallon, eclipsing the 49.0 cent weekly rise after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Many gas price records have been broken due to Russia’s war on Ukraine, which has pushed Western countries to impose severe sanctions on Russia, curbing Russian exports of crude oil to the global market. On Saturday, the U.S. national average gas price surpassed $4 per gallon for the first time since 2008, and Friday’s spike alone came close to
the record daily rise of 18 cents per gallon, increasing nearly 16 cents per gallon in one day. Diesel prices, however, did break records on Friday, as diesel soared to its largest daily gain ever: 22.2 cents per gallon, 6 cents higher than the previous record from 2013. “Americans have never seen gasoline prices this high, nor have we seen the pace of increases so fast and furious. That combination makes this situation all the more remarkable and intense, with crippling sanctions on Russia curbing their flow of oil, leading to the massive spike in the price of all fuels: gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and more,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum
analysis at GasBuddy. “It’s a dire situation and won’t improve any time soon. The high prices are likely to stick around for not days or weeks, like they did in 2008, but months. GasBuddy now expects the yearly national average to rise to its highest ever recorded.” GasBuddy recommends drivers limit fuel consumption if possible, and to drive more fuel efficiently to help ease the strain on oil supply and potentially lessen the intensity of future price increases. Motorists should also shop around for gas prices and sign up for fuel rewards programs and pay cards, like Pay with GasBuddy, which can save drivers up to 25¢ per gallon.

Devotional Spreading the Word
By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net
I know this one thing about Americans. We like to work. From the very beginning, we had the “work ethic” of strength for the formation of a free country to be able to worship God freely. And we hope and pray it remains that way. As our country grew, we set good laws in place that would help in that endeavor to work and worship as we desired. Those laws still stand today. I’m reading and hearing about revivals which are breaking out in various small places
WORKING FOR GOD IN OUR LIFE AND FOR OTHERS like California and in the Niagara Falls area. There may be other ones in our other states, also. I do know God is after hearts in those who love Him and are called according to His purposes. This “church” thing all began after the Lord Jesus came to the earth and began to train His disciples to give all humanity the way to go to, and remain in, heaven forever. Revivals even now, may burst out periodically, to spread in many towns and states. They can be

take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16: 32 – 33. These words of Jesus are for all the world in this day of the war taking place in Ukraine. I pray for God to raise up an army of prayer warriors for the people in Ukraine and surrounding nations so that no more blood will be shed. Our hearts are hurt and tears are shed for all their people. We will continue to pray for this war to stop.
carried out in churches, under large tents in open fields, or even in home meetings. When the Spirit of the Living God begins to move in our hearts, people respond and don’t want to leave that gathering. It truly “revives” us to know G o d b e t t e r, a n d i t excites our hearts in more of the desire to share Jesus with others! God is always looking for those who will hear His voice and obey His calling. Here is a reminder from God found in Second Chronicles:
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves; and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” Second Chronicles 7: 14. There are times when evil seems to prosper and win over good. So the more we turn to God for help and for answers, He will strengthen us to endure and find the way out. And when we are
helped by the LORD, then we can turn and help our brothers and sisters. It was almost time for Jesus’ trial and death, we He was telling His disciples this: “Behold, an hour is coming and has already come for you to be scattered, each to his own home and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but

This is the 125th Anniversary Year of the Texas Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy! All the Rebel Joan Of Arc Belles attended this important business Forum wearing their proud Chapter Color, “Rebel Red”, and filled several tables. Many important things were covered in the Forum Workshop of information, while bonding time
happened with all the Chapters coming together from across the Great State of Texas. There were over 135 UDC ladies in Attendance for this annual Workshop Forum, and The Rebel Joan Of Arc Chapter tied with one other Texas Chapter from San Antonio, for the highest Chapter Members in Attendance. There were also 23 “First Timers” at this Forum, and RJOA had three of those proud new attendees who were so honored to be there, CHARLOTTE BELIN, ANNISTYN HARLESS, and KIM HARLESS. Upon arrival all Chapters brought their donations of “Socks for Veterans”, and deposited in
large bends that the TX Division UDC had waiting. The generosity of all the Chapters was underestimated for their Veteran Support Project, and the bends were “over flowing” with 3,355 pairs of socks collected for men and women soldiers. The Veterans Socks had to be loaded onto many carts for transport! These totals gathered came from over 75 Chapters across the state, and Rebel Joan Of Arc proudly contributed 123 Pairs of socks to this effort. The RJOA already do personal Veterans Ceremonies and Certificate Presentations to honor any Veterans they encounter through out the year. The
Rebel Joan Of Arc Chapter and RJOA Officer of Military Service Awards, HILARIE HICKS, were proud presenters of two Veterans at this past years TX Division UDC Convention: Mr William Thorne & RJOA Veteran, CYNTHIA CONNORS! This two Day Forum Event began with Friday E v e n i n g D i n n e r, a n d wonderful entertainment by “Lil’ Wranglers of College Station”. These young teenage men and ladies preformed amazing couples dance “feats”, all while providing a toe tapping good time for all to enjoy! Later scheduled event followed, TX Division Board Meeting, where important business is covered and Division Officer Reports are given. The Rebel Joan Of Arc Chapter is proud to have their Founder, ELAINE COLLINGS, as a Texas Division Officer, and RJOA Chapter Historian SHELIA WILLIAMSON, as D iv is io n C h air man o f Membership for Texas Chapters. Evenings always end with the private and fun Rebel Joan Of Arc Room Party, by Invitation Only! This years Hostesses were President JENNY LEHR, Assistant Chaplain CHARLOTTE BELIN, and RJOA KAREN DeBERRY. Surprises awaited the attenders!
Saturday was back to Business, with the excitement leading off the day with the Rebel Joan Of Arc Auctioning of the annual Endowment Doll, “Miss Belle”, with the proceeds going to the TX Division of the Children of the Confederacy Organization. Marvelous energetic RJOA A u c t i o n e e r , LY N H A W T H O R N E HOWARD, explained the History of the Hand Made Prize Winning Doll, named “Miss Belle”, and thanked the last winning Chapter for her return in perfect condition in her tall glass and wooden display case. The exciting bidding began and shouts from across, and from the back of the large ballroom filled the air. The highest bid went to the Bryan Chapter, for $325.00, and will make a great contribution to the Children of the Confederacy Organization for this year. Chapter President Jane Ranck was the Proud Winner, as all her chapter huddled around her in excitement! That “win” was a true Chapter effort and something they can feel very honored about. The Endowment Doll will be displayed for one year and used for “Education” by the winning chapter. The winning Chapter Name will be added with a Brass Plaque to the line up of the previous winners, that will follow the History of this Te x a s D i v i s i o n U D C Endowment Doll, “Miss Belle”. Rebel Joan Of Arc also contributed a gorgeous one of a kind, hand made, large Confederate Wreath, for
auction. This lovely wreath was made by artist RJOA, CAIMY HARBISON, of Spring Texas, and garnered $250.00 for the Children of the Confederacy. After all contributions were made, the final total donations to the TX Division Children Of The Confederacy, was $2,345.00. Thanks to all the chapters, members, and Texas Division for making this happen for our youth as leaders for tomorrow. Forum Speaker, Teresa Roane, UDC General Archivist from Richmond Vi r g i n i a , p r e s e n t e d “Confederate History 101” and a second program on “Talking Points About Relevance of the Confederacy…” Professor Teresa Roane is also a “Lady of Color”, spoke on the audacity of some “Historians” speaking in Arrogance & Ignorance, without Researched facts. Professor Roane was applauded with a standing ovation many times for her intellectual, factual information researched at the Library of Congress, and historical accuracy, that she presented to the eager audience. Professor Roane is a very impressive speaker. Other Forum Topics included in the Workshop that was requested “Parliamentary Tools Made Easy”, and “Grave marker Care and Cleaning”. Both serious topics mixed in to all the excitement of the day. All the Forum attendees left the TX Div Forum with renewed convections, education, and friendships!
