(April 12, 2021) - Texas gas prices have fallen 1.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.60/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Gas prices in Texas are 0.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 97.3 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.24/g today while the most expensive is $3.50/g, a difference of $1.26/g. The lowest price in the state today is $2.24/g while the highest is $3.50/g, a difference of $1.26/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 2.1 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.85/g today. The national average is down 0.5 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.02/g higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $2.84/g, down 1.2 cents per gallon from last week's $2.85/g. San Antonio- $2.39/g, down 5.8 cents per gallon from last week's $2.44/g. Austin- $2.50/g, down 2.1 cents per gallon from last week's $2.52/g. "It has been a fairly tame last few weeks at the pump for most areas after a particularly active February and March when prices were screaming higher," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "After surging back then, we've seen the price increases fade, and while we haven't seen much of a decline, prices have been holding near their yearly highs. For now, it feels like the risk of seeing the national average climb to $3/gal has been delayed by a recent surge in COVID-19 cases both here and abroad, limiting the upside to gasoline demand, but should things begin to improve, especially as we get closer to the start of the s u m m e r, w e s t i l l h a v e potential to see summer gas prices at their highest levels in years. Make no mistake, gas prices this year will be tied to the hip of the Covid situation." GasBuddy is the authoritative voice for gas prices and the only source for station-level data spanning nearly two decades. Unlike AAA's once daily survey covering credit card transactions at 100,000 stations and the Lundberg Survey, updated once every two weeks based on 7,000 gas stations, GasBuddy's survey updates 288 times every day from the most diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country. GasBuddy data is accessible at http://FuelInsights.GasBuddy. com. SOURCE GasBuddy

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Fresh Pea Soup Food for Thought Diana Anderson
DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com
When I think of pea soup it is invariably the hearty one made with dried split peas and best suited to fall and winter. But when spring brings up beautiful fresh peas, an early harvest gift, the soup made with these is unique, fresh and light. English peas have a sweet flavor and are what you can occasionally purchase at the grocery store in the produce section or more reliably frozen. They're sometimes sold as garden or shelling peas. Strictly speaking, green peas are not vegetables. They are part
of the legume family, which consists of plants that produce pods with seeds inside. Lentils, chickpeas, beans and peanuts are also legumes. Peas contain just about every vitamin and mineral you need, in addition to a significant amount of fiber. They are also relatively low in calories and of course have no fat. They are an excellent source of protein. Next time you see a package of fresh English peas (think Trader Joes), why not pick it up and make this soup. Crème fraîche is called for in this recipe and if you are not familiar with it, it is a version of sour cream with a higher fat content, which makes it good for cooking because it is less prone to curdling when
you simmer it. While it looks similar to sour cream, crème fraîche is thicker, richer, and tastes less tangy than sour cream. A common dairy staple throughout Europe, crème fraîche is less common in the United States. I have always thought it was unduly expensive so I started making my own. It's easy. You will need heavy cream and a little buttermilk. This needs to be real cultured buttermilk, not the kind of buttermilk that you can make by adding lemon juice to regular milk. The friendly microbes in real buttermilk are a critical component, and these are missing from milk. To make a simple crème fraîche at home, follow these steps:
1. In a saucepan, mix 1 tablespoon of buttermilk into 1 cup heavy cream. 2. Gently heat the mixture until it is slightly warm, and then transfer the warmed mixture into a glass bowl. 3. Cover the bowl with a clean dishcloth and let it stand at room temperature for 24 hours. 4. Stir and refrigerate until chilled. Now your crème fraîche is ready to eat. Sour cream is the most common substitute for crème fraiche.
1 cup chopped yellow onion 4 cups chicken stock 5 cups freshly shelled peas or 2 10-ounce packages frozen peas (see notes) 2/3 cup chopped fresh mint leaves loosely packed (see notes) 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup creme fraiche 1/2 cup freshly chopped chives Garlic croutons for serving
Fresh Pea Soup
Instructions: 1. Heat the butter in a Ingredients: large saucepan, add the 2 t a b l e s p o o n s leeks and onion, and cook unsalted butter over medium-low heat for 2 cups chopped leeks 5 to 10 minutes, until the white and light green parts onion is tender. (2 leeks) 2. Add the chicken
stock, increase the heat to high, and bring to a boil. Add the peas and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until the peas are tender. (Frozen peas will take only 3 minutes.) Off the heat, add the mint, salt, and pepper. 3. Puree the soup in batches: place 1 cup of soup in a blender, place the lid on top, and puree on low speed. With the blender still running, open the venthole in the lid and slowly add more soup until the blender is threequarters full. Pour the soup into a large bowl and repeat until all the soup is pureed. 4. Whisk in the creme fraiche and chives and taste for seasoning. 5. Serve hot with garlic croutons.

Comments According to Doc
H.R. 1 - “The Bill from Hell” a Review of US House of Representatives: Walden Happenings By Doc Fennessy The opinions expressed in this editorial do not necessarily reflect those of MCN.
Folks, this House of Representatives HR-1 Bill is a disastrous movement by the Democrat Party to destroy the union of American states. Firstly, the movement to remove “States Rights” relative to the states freedom to conduct elections will disappear. Among several ridiculous inconclusions is Division160 whereas the Democrats can go into high school classrooms, pass out legal ballots and have 16-year-olds vote in all elections. America today is in complete control of four people: President Joe Biden, Vice-President Kamala Harris, Chuck Schumer in the Senate, and Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House. It seems that the Democrat members of both the senate and the House of Representatives cowardly vote as to what Schumer and Pelosi dictate because
they have been threatened to lose their job in the next election, if they do not vote the way they are told. This congress needs to vote “AMERICAN” instead of dictated Democrat votes. I predict at the end of Joe Biden’s 100 days he will be in medical retirement and Harris will become President, and according to the U.S. Constitution Nancy Pelosi will move up to be the Vice President and head of the United States Senate. QUESTION? Isn’t this the time we Texans should be thinking of seceding from the United States Union. I received this interesting fact sheet review of H.R.-1 from Walden’s Ernie Harris. It annotated the H.R.-1 bill that is referred to as a “the bill from hell”. This was written by Jacob Dreizin, a US Army Vet who has his own blog and reports on current events in DC. All of the words that follow in this article are the unabridged words of Jacob Dreizen throughout as of March 30th . Jacob Dreizin started his article by saying “that,” “Represen-
tatives on March 3rd, 2021, is more than “just” a Federal takeover of all state elections systems. H . R . 1 d e l i b e r a t e l y, methodically eliminates every safeguard against voter fraud, which is how Democrats hope to win forever. And it does many other crazy things. In a few highlights (this is not everything), the bill: · Aims to bring military absentee voting under the permanent, direct review of the U.S. Department of Justice (because Democrats don’t trust the military vote.) Eliminates any possible audit trail for paper ballots, absentee or otherwise. Makes signature matching of absentee ballots so cumbersome as to effectively do away with it. Eliminates provisional ballots. You show up at the precinct, and if your name or address do not match the rolls, no problem, just explain it away, and they have to put your ballot in with the big pile—no follow-up checks. Severely limits interstate cross-checks of voter records (looking for
people registered in more than one state) by conditioning removal from the rolls on a match of the last four of the voter’s SSN—whereas very few states collect SSNs for this purpose—or on information from the ERIC system, a multistate program that some Republican-oriented states signed up for but which they never intended as the only means of ensuring voter database integrity. Requires all absentee ballot applicants to be offered a choice to have all future ballots automatically sent to their address indefinitely, forever, or until the cows come home. Mandates Atlantastyle public “drop boxes” for the anonymous submission of unmailed absentee ballots, nationwide. The drop boxes must be made available starting 45 days before an election. Mandates that every state automatically register every “eligible” voter, as well as prospective eligible from the age of 16. This shifts the burden of proof from the registrant (who must
show or declare eligibility or face the liability of a fraudulent registration) to the state (which can’t really prove noneligibility, because they don’t know who’s a citizen, and they have better things to do.) This is an instant recipe for millions of non-citizens to register and vote with no risk at all. Requires state government health and welfare agencies and state universities, as well as F e d e r a l f i e l d offices/facilities—VA, Social Security Administration, etc.—to help find unregistered voters (those who fell through the cracks) by constantly passing data on everyone they service to their state elections board or department, which then sifts the data to find anyone not registered. This turns state agencies into one big voter registration machine (of course, they have nothing else to do), and would require tens of billions of dollars’ worth of Informat i o n Te c h n o l o g y upgrades. Empowers the Feds to tell all states how to run and use their voter
databases—how to determine who is ineligible, or whether a voter record is duplicate, or a voter is deceased. The Feds would also dictate as to who can access those records (the Dems want to keep it as “close hold” as possible, off the Internet, closing the path for citizen-sleuths to find tens of thousands of absentee ballots received the day of or prior to being requested, or other huge discrepancies, as with Pennsylvania 2020.) This is like the Government telling you who can drive your car, when it’s in your garage and you’re the one making payments. If this beast passes, we will no longer have a two-party system in this c o u n t r y, u n l e s s t h e Republicans get wise quick and do what Democrats do—although, both parties doing it would cause such chaos, we might as well not have elections. We’ve been told since 2016 there’s such a huge “threat to our democracy” from Russia, but that was smoke, the threat was right here. [ckie Rexroad President].

Texas State Senator
My Five Cents...
Robert Nichols
A monthly column from Sen. Robert Nichols by Sen. Robert Nichols, Senate District 3
This week the Senate passed Senate Bill 1, the Senate's version of the budget for this year. The budget includes over $11 billion for children and teacher public education support, $8 billion for mental health support, including an almost $20 million increase for children's mental health programs, and over $25 billion for highway improvements and new construction. The budget is a reflection of our priorities this session and took over six
weeks to put together. Here are five things happening around your state: 1. Governor issues executive order prohibiting vaccine passports This week Governor Abbott issued an executive order prohibiting government-mandated vaccine passports, including for the COVID-19 vaccine. This order applies to state agencies and political subdivisions in Texas. It

prevents those agencies from requiring proof of vaccination to receive services. It also prohibits entities that receive public funds, including private entities, from requiring documentation of vaccine status to receive any service or enter any place. Texans' vaccination status is a private health matter, and as such should be protected from any forced disclosure. Currently, the COVID-19 vaccine is not mandatory. 2. Texas Senate passes election security bill The Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 7 last week, which is aimed at protecting election integrity. It sets the early voting hours to start at 6 am and finish at 9 pm. It requires voting to occur inside a building with certain regulations. Voters would have to enter the building unless unable to because it was a risk to their health. The bill also prevents local officials from sending out mail-in ballot applications to all voters, whether they're eligible to vote-by-mail or not. Voters have to request a mail-in ballot on their own volition. Elections officials
are allowed to post instructions on how to vote by mail on their website. There are several other provisions in the bill that strengthens election security and integrity for all our future elections.
With those rates decreasing, the CDC has also released new guidance about travelling within the United States for fully vaccinated people. Those who are fully vaccinated can travel safely within the US and no longer need to get tested or 3. Texas receives 2.5 quarantine before or after million doses of vaccine this travel, unless a destination week requires it. The Texas Department of State Health Services announced that Texas received 2.5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine this week. That marks the most Texas has received in a single week thus far. Texas has now administered more than 11.8 million doses. Nearly 7.8 million people have received at least one dose, and more than 4.3 million Texans are fully vaccinated. Almost 20 percent of Texans are fully vaccinated. This comes as hospitalization rates for Texans have fallen dramatically. East Texas hospitals are seeing numbers as low as they've been since last spring. East Texas hospital leaders credit increasing vaccination rates and lasting immunity for the drop in COVID-19 hospitalizations.
19 has led to an extensive disruption in student learning and assessing where students are is the first step to correcting that disruption. However, that becomes difficult when online STAAR testing is interrupted. TEA worked to get the students back online by the next day.
5. East Texas 5th grader 4. First day of STAAR raises money for slain DPS cancelled due to disruptions Trooper's family Texas students were preparing to take the STAAR test starting this week but were hampered by widespread technical glitches that forced many students offline or prevented them from logging in. The Texas Education Agency advised districts to stop online testing for the day while the vendor tried to resolve the problem. At least three tests were effected by the glitch, including the fourth grade writing exam and the seventh grade writing and English I exams. TEA has waived grade promotion requirements for students in fifth and eighth grades, so the assessment is aimed at finding a benchmark for where students are. COVID-
A Houston County 5th grader donated all of her winnings from showing her hog at the Houston County Youth Fair and Livestock show to the family of fallen DPS Trooper Chad Walker. Last month, Trooper Walker was shot multiple times after stopping to aid a driver near Mexia. He later died of his injuries at an area hospital. Latexo ISD student Aubrey Waits heard about the tragedy and decided to donate her winnings to the family. Other donations began to come in on top of Aubrey's and the fifth grader ended up raising about $10,000 for the family. I offer my condolences to the family of Trooper Walker.
Governor Abbott Sends Letter To Vice President Harris Demanding Shut Down Of Federally Run Unaccompanied Minor Facility In San Antonio Provides More Information On Allegations Of Sexual Assault, Abuse, Neglect Inside Facility
AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today sent a letter to Vice President and Border Czar Kamala Harris demanding that the Biden Administration shut down the federally run unaccompanied minor facility in San Antonio. The Governor included a m e m o f r o m t h e Te x a s Department of Family and Protective Services and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission that summarizes the allegations
of sexual assault, bullying, understaffing, and disregard for COVID-19 protocols within the facility. "The State of Texas previously warned about overcrowded conditions at these facilities, and now those conditions have led to allegations of child abuse and neglect," reads the Governor's letter. "Our repeated warnings and questions have gone ignored by President Biden, yourself, and Department of
Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas. In your role as Border Czar, you have a duty to these children and the American people to act immediately. I implore you to act immediately to protect these children, secure the border, and end this crisis." Last week, Governor Abbott sent a letter Vice President Harris demanding answers and swift action from the Biden Administration to address the ongoing Office Of The Governor, 3/15/21
humanitarian crisis at the border. In the letter, the Governor also urged Vice President Harris to visit the border to see the crisis for herself. On March 6th, Governor Abbott announced Operation Lone Star to send law enforcement personnel and resources to high threat areas along the border. On March 17th, he expanded the Operation to include antihuman trafficking efforts.

The statewide campaign is April 25 through May 2, 2021, and the focus this year is "Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities." Forest landowners are an important part of Texas agriculture and the stewards of this resource. They work closely with their local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and the Texas A&M Forest Service (TFS) district office to implement conservation practices that promote the health and sustainability of forests and forest ecosystems. These privately-owned forests contribute significantly to the Texas economy and provide numerous environmental and social benefits. If recent events have taught us anything, it is that forests are extremely important. From the unprecedented shortages of daily supplies like toilet paper, to the health benefits of being around trees and nature during stressful times, forests improve our quality of life and
our communities. To truly have a healthy forest, proper management and conservation is needed. Thankfully, many forest landowners in Texas are implementing beneficial conservation practices such as strategic tree plantings, prescribed burning, brush management to remove diseased trees and invasive species, native grass management, wildlife management, and even bee propagation to stimulate pollination. In certain instances, livestock can be included as part of a prescribed grazing plan to strategically manage the leaf litter, soil, and underbrush in a forested area, which can ultimately assist in preventing wildfires. Without these sustainable management practices, problems such as soil erosion, insect and disease outbreaks, invasive species encroachment, declines in b i o d i v e r s i t y, a n d e v e n catastrophic wildfires can occur. Trees filter air, reduce ambient temperatures, absorb carbon dioxide, and produce oxygen. They help conserve energy by casting summer shade and blocking winter winds. Tree roots hold the soil in place and fight erosion. Trees absorb and store rainwater, reducing runoff and sediments after storms, which also helps recharge groundwater supply and prevent
flooding. Essential products made from trees include paper products and lumber. Trees also offer habitat and food to birds, insects, lichen, fungi, mammals, and reptiles. Finally, trees increase our quality of life through a relaxing effect, reducing stress. This campaign aims to bring more awareness and support to voluntary land stewardship because the way we manage our resources on private lands directly impacts our forestry resources. The Texas Soil and Water Conservation Board is proud to collaborate with conservation partners across Texas to promote the importance of land stewardship. With proper management and the implementation of conservation practices, Texas forest landowners are improving and sustaining healthy forests. These forests not only provide healthy trees for production agriculture but allow for healthy communities of organisms in the soils, healthy communities of wildlife, and in some cases, provides healthy livestock for your own community. Your local SWCD and TFS district office have been assisting forest landowners and agricultural producers with conservation practices for almost 85 and 100 years, respectively. Partnering organizations in
the “Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities” public awareness campaign includes A g r i c u l t u r e Te a c h e r s Association of Texas, Ag Workers Insurance, Ducks Unlimited, Earthmoving Contractors Association of Te x a s , E x o t i c Wi l d l i f e Association, Independent Cattlemen’s Association of Texas, Plains Cotton Growers, Project Learning Tree, San Antonio River Authority, South Texans’ Property Rights Association, Texan by Nature, Te x a s A & M A g r i L i f e Blacklands Research and Extension Center, Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute, Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council, Texas Agricultural Land Trust, Te x a s A s s o c i a t i o n o f Dairymen, Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Texas Conservation Association for Water and Soil, Texas Farm Bureau, Texas Forestry Association, Texas Grain and Feed Association, Texas Grazing Land Coalition, Te x a s H e m p G r o w e r s Association, Texas Independent Ginners Association, Texas Land Trust Council, Texas Logging Council, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Poultry Federation, Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, Texas Water Resources Institute, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Devotional Learning To Wait - A Lesson Recently Experienced Spreading the Word
By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net
I remember in March of last year, when the news of Covid became a topic of great emphasis, that it was perhaps just a “flu” bug. Then the reports of deaths came flooding into our country. It began in California and went all the way to New York, and beyond. Now began a scramble to find a vaccine, but even that took months, and on to a whole year. Now it’s
lessened due to the country finding several vaccines that work to keep many of us safe. There were many who found different ways to work at home on past things that needed to be sorted out, cleaned, built, and replaced. I lived through all the above mentioned categories, and I felt sorry for those who had to continue working, cleaning, and still hoping for their real jobs to open once again. Within all that, God was teaching us to wait…on Him. Another lesson – to be thankful for our friends – to learn patience - to be thankful

for our churches, who continued reaching out to the poor in the food and clothing area. We learned what it meant to visit the elderly and the sick by wearing masks and plastic gloves. And yet, as I waited inside my home each day, I knew God had a plan for all this suffering. We were learning how to WAIT on God’s promises to come forth in the days and weeks ahead. We were, and still are, waiting for His promises. In Paul’s writings to the Romans of his day, he encourages all to be bringers of
hope and faith to all people as he writes: “ F o r whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4. And also: “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13. which has never let me down. These particular verses mean so much to me: “Make sure your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,…The Lord is my Helper…I will not be afraid. What will man do to me? ‘ “ Hebrews 13: 5-6. As we continue
to live out this pandemic, I, like many others, have continually been thankful for electricity which runs our phones, sharing home visits, planting more gardens, and loving God’s protection through it all.
