Texas Annual BEAR Crawl to Weekly Raise Funds for Exotic Gas Prices Animal Sanctuary (April 18, 2022) - Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 0.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.69/g today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 23.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand $1.10/g higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $3.18/g yesterday while the most expensive was $4.79/g, a difference of $1.61/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $3.18/g while the highest was $4.79/g, a difference of $1.61/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 3.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.06/g today. The national average is down 21.1 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.21/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: April 18, 2021: $2.59/g (U.S. Average: $2.85/g) April 18, 2020: $1.57/g (U.S. Average: $1.78/g) April 18, 2019: $2.56/g (U.S. Average: $2.84/g) April 18, 2018: $2.50/g (U.S. Average: $2.74/g) April 18, 2017: $2.26/g (U.S. Average: $2.41/g) April 18, 2016: $1.89/g (U.S. Average: $2.11/g) April 18, 2015: $2.25/g (U.S. Average: $2.44/g) April 18, 2014: $3.48/g (U.S. Average: $3.66/g) April 18, 2013: $3.38/g (U.S. Average: $3.51/g) April 18, 2012: $3.80/g (U.S. Average: $3.90/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $3.75/g, down 6.9 cents per gallon from last week's $3.82/g. San Antonio- $3.53/g, down 5.8 cents per gallon from last week's $3.58/g. Austin- $3.64/g, down 5.9 cents per gallon from last week's $3.70/g. “We've now seen the national average price of gasoline decline every week for the last month, a feat we most likely would not have expected ahead of summer and given the continued turns in Russia's war on Ukraine. However, the downturn could slow or could even reverse in the days ahead if the rally in oil prices continues," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "A barrel of crude is now $14 higher than it was last week, as the European Union weighs placing harsher sanctions on Russia. This could further tilt the delicate balance of supply and demand in the wrong way, potentially sending oil prices up significantly if implemented. The path forward at the pump remains murky, however, with many possible outcomes, so motorists should be prepared for a bumpy ride." SOURCE GasBuddy

Montgomery, TX - Did you know that there are 1,000 bears living in substandard conditions in residential backyards as pets, or roadside attractions, and in need of placement bought out of the exotic pet trade? Many animal facilities a c r o s s t h e c o u n t r y, h o u s i n g l a rg e e x o t i c animals and wildlife, have closed due to lack of finances (due to COVID). This leads to lack of proper care, and neglect. Bears can consume 40 plus pounds of fruits and vegetables along with fish, nuts, bugs, and other animals (including feral hog piglets) per day when preparing for hibernation in the winter months, even in captivity. Many people do not realize you can buy a bear cub from a breeder for $500 and have it as a pet in your home. Currently there are exotic animal sales north of Huntsville and through exotic pet stores in the Greater Houston area selling bears, tigers, lemurs, and other wild animals that only require a low-cost permit to have at your residence. This is the same with tigers (as low as $1000) and many other wild exotic animals. The bears, tigers,

and monkeys are bred for profit in this country including in Texas. All the animal rescue sanctuaries stay full and there continues to be a need for added neglected large animals. The alternative to a sanctuary is euthanasia. Bears Etc. is the ONLY exotic animal rescue in Southeast Texas! The mission of Bears, Etc. is to set up a Bear and Exotic Animal Rescue Sanctuary in Montgomery County, connecting people with nature through education and awareness. The hope is to build the nation’s first ultramodern Bear Sanctuary, supplying a safe place for neglected, abused, and unwanted bears, who are a part of the exotic pet trade. The sanctuary would supply a permanent refuge for displaced, captive-raised exotic animals kept as "pets" or retired from performance. Bears Etc. is a 501©3 non-profit organization founded in 2017 by Kati and Ambrose Krouse to “Leave the world better than they found it by giving animals, and people, a PEACE of the Wild!” Kati Krouse rescues exotic animals, specifically bears, out of

"Our spring fundraiser has always been a party with a real, meaningful purpose,” Ronsman explains, “The funds raised tonight are critical to continuing to provide Advocates for every single child in foster care in our county." The highlight of the evening was the featured family and Advocate presentation, which highlighted CASA Advocate, Mike Quinn, and the little girl, Perla, for whom he advocated during her time in foster care. The event showcased a variety of crowd-pleasing games including a Golden Ticket game and a raffle for a diamond pendant courtesy of Thomas Markle Jewelers. Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Cornbread Tamale Pie

Food for Thought Diana Anderson

DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com

What is cornbread tamale pie, besides the most delicious skillet dinner there ever was? This question is perhaps better answered by addressing what it isn't. It isn't a pie. It definitely has nothing to do with tamales. There is cornbread involved, happily, but beyond that, the name's origin is anyone's guess. It's a relatively spicy mix of browned ground beef, onions, bell peppers, and tomato sauce, all smothered in a cornbread batter and baked in the oven. Obviously, it is one of the best things ever to come out of an oven because it involves both meat and carbohydrates and is baked in a cast-iron skillet to boot. Oddly, this recipe seems to appeal to kids so don’t underestimate it as a family favorite. Perhaps it borrows some of the ageless allure of the Sloppy Joe. I made it for dinner one night before grandkids unexpectedly arrived. I thought I would have to dig into the frozen chicken nuggets to make for them when they tasted the “pie” and loved it. The youngest one was 3 and I really figured he wouldn’t want any. Boy was I wrong, he housed the stuff. Not only did it not resemble a salami sandwich (his previous favorite), but it was also spicy. Not vindaloo-level spicy, of course, but it had a solid hit of red pepper flakes and was not shy on flavor. Plus, there was meat in it. And vegetables. There was a disconcerting lack of cheese, refined flour, and sugar. He wasn't supposed to like this thing. And yet cornbread tamale pie remains, a family favorite. Here's how you make it: First, get out your castiron skillet. Then, begin to brown some ground beef in that pan, add chopped onions, green bell peppers, salt and pepper and a hit of

CASA from page 1 future is uncertain, and they are making a difference, one child at a time." Miller explains, “ C u r r e n t l y, a b o u t 6 children enter foster care in Montgomery every week. You're going to want to bake this until the cornbread topping is deeply golden and a little crusty—the whole point of this dish is breaking through a crunchy exterior to get to the spicy, saucy chili (it is, essentially, a chili) underneath. But the very best part of the pan lies between that upper crust and the meaty sauce: the layer of cornbread that abuts the tomatoes. It's drenched in sauce and soggy, but, you know, the good kind of soggy. Like when you use a piece of bread to mop up the last bit of a ragu. That's where the magic happens in cornbread tamale pie, and it still gets me. This dish is unfussy and intuitive but…if you want a bit of refinement and a recipe, check this version out. Ingredients Filling • 1-pound lean ground beef • ½ cup chopped onion about ½ of a small onion • 15 ounce can diced tomatoes drained (or 15 oz can tomato sauce) • 1 cup frozen corn • 4 ounce can chopped ripe olives drained • 4 ounce can chopped green chilies drained • 1 tablespoon chili powder • ½ teaspoon garlic powder • ½ teaspoon salt Topping • 1 cup cornmeal • 1 cup milk • 2 tablespoons

granulated sugar • 2 eggs • ½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese • fresh chopped chives or parsley for garnish if desired Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9”x9” baking dish or 10inch oven safe skillet with nonstick cooking spray. 2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and onion and cook until beef is browned and no longer pink, stirring often. Drain any grease from the pan. 3. To the beef, stir in tomatoes, corn, olives, chiles, chili powder, garlic powder and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until thickened; about 10 minutes. Pour the beef mixture into the prepared baking dish. 4. In a medium sized bowl, stir together the cornmeal, milk, sugar and eggs just until combined. Mixture will be thin. Spread evenly over the beef mixture in the pan, then top evenly with the cheese. 5. Bake uncovered in the preheated 350-degree oven for 40-50 minutes. Top should be golden brown, and the sauce should be bubbling up on the sides. 6. Let sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. Top with sour cream and sliced green onions if desired. 7. Top individual servings with sour cream and parsley or chives for garnish, if desired. 8. The recipe for the topping here is not strictly cornbread but thicker, and not so surprisingly reminiscent of a tamale, BUT two boxes of Jiffy Cornbread Mix work just fine. Bake according to the directions on the package adding a bit of time for the two boxes. If this recipe goes over with your family, try adding finely chopped zucchini next time to increase the veggie

For the Topping: • 1 1/4 cup allpurpose flour • 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda • 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt • 3/4 cup sour cream • 1 large egg • 2/3 cup whole milk Instructions Make the Chili Base 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. 2. Add the oil to a large cast-iron skillet or oven-safe fry pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté for about 4 minutes. 3. Add the ground beef, and sprinkle the chili p o w d e r, c u m i n , s a l t , pepper, and garlic powder across the top. Add it to the chili and reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Simmer for about 10-12 minutes or until slightly thickened. Stir occasionally. Remove from the heat and set aside. Make the Topping: 1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Make a well in the center of the bowl. 2. Whisk together the sour cream, egg, and milk in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Then, pour the wet ingredients into the well and stir everything together evenly incorporated and combined. Do not overmix. 3. Spoon the mix over the top of the chili and bake at 400°F for 15-18 minutes. Allow to cool slightly, serve, and enjoy!

Fed Raises Interest Rates For First Time Since 2018 A weekly column by Kent Pendleton The Fed raised interest rates for the first time since December 2018 and a majority of Fed officials expect at least another 150 basis points in rate hikes for 2022. As widely anticipated, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) raised the target range for the federal funds rate (the overnight lending rate) by 25 basis points (bps) to 0.25-0.50% at its March meeting. The FOMC cited elevated inflation and strengthening employment. The conflict in Ukraine will have a “highly uncertain” impact on the U.S. economy, according to the FOMC, but will likely dampen growth and add inflation pressures. “While this rate increase was anticipated,” said Raymond James Chief Economist Scott Brown, “the Fed signaled a higher path for interest rates than the market expected.” Twelve of 16 senior

officials anticipate seven or more rate hikes this year. “The Fed expects inflation to moderate in the months ahead,” Brown said, “but if not, it is prepared to raise rates more aggressively down the line.” The median forecast of senior Federal Reserve officials for 2022 for GDP growth fell from 4% (in December) to 2.8%. The median forecast of inflation rose from 2.6% to 4.3%. Headline consumer inflation was 7.9% in the 12 months ending in February. Raymond James Chief Investment Officer Larry Adam accurately predicted Powell would instead raise rates 25 bps at this meeting, although sentiment at the time leaned toward 50. Adam believes 25-bps increases will allow the Fed the flexibility to monitor the effect of increased rates on the economy.

“On average, after the first Fed tightening [cycle], the economy tends to expand for an additional five years,” said Adam on February 22. “With this economic expansion only two years old, we believe the Fed has every incentive to make sure it steers us clear of a recession.” Adam did note that high energy prices may cramp consumer spending and push the Fed to act more a g g r e s s i v e l y. B r o w n believes the conflict in Ukraine could dampen growth and lead to higher inflation, which would also push the Fed to take action. Officials continued to work on a plan to start reducing the Fed’s $9 trillion balance sheet, expected to begin in the months ahead. Details of that discussion will be included in the policy meeting minutes, to be released on April 6. The next FOMC meeting is scheduled for May 3-4.

COVID-19 vaccination status constitutes a “vaccine passport” under subsection 161.0085(b) of the Health and Safety Code.” This opinion applies to any TEA enforcement of this issue. "Proud to see SB 968 once again protecting Texans from vaccine passports of any kind," stated Senator Lois Kolkhorst. Additionally, Paxton stated that HISD’s Covid19 paid-leave policy does not, on its face, violate an e m p l o y e e ’s m e d i c a l privacy rights, but clarified “HISD is a covered entity under the Texas Medical Records and Privacy Act

and must comply with its provisions. Any information related to the vaccination status of an employee would be covered as “protected health information” under the TMRPA (as the statute adopts the federal definition) and treated accordingly”. Subsection 161.0085(b) does not permit a government entity to issue nor share standard documentation that certifies an individual’s COVID-19 vaccination status for any purpose other than for health care. Sharing information for an employment matter (or any other non-health care related purpose) would not

be permitted under this statute. As written, subsection 161.0085(c) clearly prohibits a business from requiring submission of such documentation from a customer.

Brady, Crapo Demand Update on Criminal Breach of Taxpayer Data Almost a year later, the Biden Administration has not sought out stolen taxpayer information Kevin Brady (R-TX) and Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee Sen. Mike Crapo (RID), noted how investigators still have not sought a copy of the stolen information, writing:

Nearly 10 months later, the Biden Administration still does not know what taxpayer data was stolen and leaked to ProPublica last summer. It’s hard to investigate a crime when you don’t know what was stolen. In a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, top Republicans on the House and Senate tax panels are requesting an update on the investigation.

“Anyone accessing or releasing confidential personal tax information from the IRS without necessary approvals faces severe penalties and must be prosecuted. In June 8, 2021, testimony before the Senate Finance Committee, IRS Commissioner Rettig pledged to ‘absolutely’ ensure that anyone found to have revealed such information would face prosecution, ‘absolutely.’

“It is unclear why the Department of Treasury, the IRS, and the DepartThe letter, sent by ment of Justice do not ask House Ways and Means ProPublica for a copy of Ranking Member Rep.

whatever data ProPublica is using to produce political articles in order to determine whether ProPublica’s claim of possessing legally protected data is true.” KEY TAKEAWAYS: * Investigators still have not requested a copy of the stolen information: As of September 13, both the Treasury and the IRS say that they don’t “know whether there has been a data breach or a threat of a data breach” and that they do not “have any information concerning the sources of the alleged taxpayer information published by ProPublica.” * The American people deserve answers: Nearly 10 months later, the Biden Administration is no closer to holding those responsible for leaking confidential, personal tax information accountable.

* Taxpayer privacy is paramount: Democrats have prioritized a supercharged IRS and surveillance scheme over getting to the bottom of this criminal breach of taxpayer information. BACKGROUND: * After a briefing on June 14, 2021 from Commissioner Rettig, Rep. Brady renewed his call for an "...aggressive investigation of this astonishing breach of trust to protect Americans' personal finances from prying, political eyes." * On June 8, 2021, ProPublica detailed income tax information to advance Democrats’ efforts to supercharge the IRS and turn your local bank into a tax auditor. * On June 9, 2021, Rep. Brady and Sen. Crapo wrote to Commissioner Rettig demanding answers on the breach.

AG Paxton Sends Letter to Biden on Reauthorizing the Keystone Pipeline AUSTIN –Attorney General Ken Paxton joined several states in a letter to President Biden insisting he reauthorize the Keystone XL pipeline project, rescind his revocation of Keystone XL’s 2019 Presidential Permit, and

provide stable regulations for companies willing to build the pipeline that our country needs to avoid dependence on overseas o i l . T h e P r e s i d e n t ’s decision to vilify American fossil fuel companies while desperately reaching

out to foreign leaders for oil shows the hypocrisy of t h i s a d m i n i s t r a t i o n ’s promotion of policies that undermine U.S. energy independence. The Keystone Pipeline would bring jobs, revenue, and greatly reduce the

devastating economic impact of President Biden’s policies that have forced Americans to brace themselves for continued high energy costs and inflation.

To the Montgomery Historical Society and the City of Montgomery: Thanks by: Robin Montgomery A few months ago, Billy Ray Duncan, president of the Montgomery Historical Society, along with members Bea Rouse, Eva Reins and Shirley Schneider plus Luke and Stormy Montgomery, comprised the working nucleus of a committee to sponsor a potentially far-reaching event for the city and region surrounding Montgomery. The event of April 9th was entitled “Celebrating Togetherness: The Texas Republic and the Cradle of Texas Road.” The event featured Montgomery’s role as county seat of the original Montgomery County, which entity during its prime, 1837-46, comprised all or part of six present counties. Key to

the significance centers on this time span overlapping the era of the Texas Republic, 1836-1846. The event referenced this area as the “Cradle of Texas Road” echoing the historical circumstance that the death of explorer Renè Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle in this area triggered actions which led to the naming of Texas. The far-reaching implications of the April 9th event stem from the make- up of celebrates present, including mayors, city managers, county clerks, heads of historical commissions and Sons and Daughters of the Texas Republic, SRT and DRT groups. Each of these were bent on promoting linkage of their respective stations

to the concept of the Cradle Road. The goals entailed promoting the dynamic march for freedom and sound education reflected in the Texas Declaration of Independence and other founding documents, along with a call to promote tourism in our region. Toward this end, it is significant that the keynote speaker was the head of Heritage Tourism for the State Historical Commission. Also, toward this end we were excited to have City Mayor Pro-Tem, T. J. Wi l k e r s o n , g i v e t h e welcome from the City of M o n t g o m e r y. H i s delightfull address enhanced the enthusiasm for those gathered to work with the city on these items

of common interest. Thanks then are in order for the opportunities extant for cooperation between the city, the historical society and entities along our Cradle Road to work together toward purposes ultimately enhancing tourism. Such symbols of togetherness stand to make our region a major player in igniting a sense of togetherness, both locally and beyond. Hence is this message one of thanks to the City of Montgomery and the Montgomery Historical Society for cooperation in this noble endeavor. The opportunities and challenges unleashed are multiple.

Devotional Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

Yes. Jesus died on a cross, and He was placed – but not buried – in a tomb for three days. Many things happened in His life during that time and afterwards. We can read about what He was doing when He arose in these scriptures when Mary visited the empty tomb: “Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, ‘Rabboni!’ which means, (Teacher).” John 20: 16. “So Jesus said to them (the disciples) again, “Peace be with you, as the Father has

GOD’S SON, JESUS - ALIVE AND ACTIVE IN HEARTS TODAY sent Me, I also send you.” John 20: 21. Then Jesus said this to Thomas, who didn’t believe He was truly risen; “Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.” John 20 :29b. And John, who wanted all to believe that Jesus had truly risen, stated this: “Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of

God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” John 20: 30 – 31. Just like the missionaries of today who go into all the world “to spread the gospel,” so they are like the missionaries who travelled with Jesus in His day. We just happen to be able to take planes or large ships overseas to reach many other foreign countries with the gospel message of so long ago. So we can see clearly that Jesus came as an example of how God would be able to reach more people here. And those that Jesus taught

and lived with could understand how many could be added to His F a t h e r ’s b e a u t i f u l kingdom. After Jesus’ life, the very purpose of our life was shown and expounded upon through the life and death of Jesus’ own disciples He had picked to keep the “Good News” going. Much depth of knowledge of the Bible had been passed on meticulously through scribes and the lives of Jesus’ disciples. God has seen that we have all we need in the history of learning about life – from the beginning to the very

end of the world and beyond! Once we begin to read it, we see how God has planned so many marvelous ways to live our life forever in heaven. His instructions are true for every person – from life to death…and beyond! Our treasured Bible has many stories of Jesus and His teachings for us. He created each day for us to read, pray, and do His bidding for our life to be lived in Jesus, as He lived it when He came to fulfill His calling. When John finished his, ‘’Book of John,” he then went on to

write what God told him about the end times to come in Revelation. John said this at the last of his “Book of John:” “This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things, which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.” John 21: 24 – 25.

Community WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BABY BIRD By Cheryl Conley

It’s spring and that means it’s baby season. You may come across a baby bird that has fallen out of the nest but do you know what to do? Here is some helpful information. First determine if it’s a nestling or a fledgling.

Nestlings have no feathers and will, in all cases, require your help. Fledglings are juvenile birds and will have some very soft down and perhaps a few adult feathers. In some cases, fledglings don’t need any help.

FOR NESTLINGS - Try to locate the nest. Look up and see if you can spot it. If possible, place the bird back in the nest. It’s an old wives’ tale that the mama bird will not accept a baby touched by humans. If it’s not possible to put it back

in the nest, place in a small box lined with paper towels or soft cloth. Don’t use terry cloth! The bird can get its claws caught in this type of fabric. You must keep the baby warm with either a hot water bottle or heating pad on low but NEVER place the nestling directly on these items. They can easily get burned. Place the heating pad or hot water bottle UNDER the box, put the cloth or paper towels in the box and place the bird on top. Put the box in a warm, quiet, dark place away from noise and family pets. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FEED THE NESTLINGS OR GIVE T H E M WAT E R . I N EVERY SITUATION, get them to a wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife center as soon as possible. Every second counts! FOR FLEDGLINGS - If you find them hopping around on the ground, sitting under bushes or

even sitting on a low branch, LEAVE THEM ALONE. They are just learning to fly and will spend a few days on the ground. Mama is nearby and watching over her baby. Keep an eye on the fledgling to make sure of this. If you don’t see the mama bird after a couple of hours, then something may have happened to her. If you don’t see her, capture the fledgling being very careful not to harm it. They are fragile. Don’t be afraid that it will hurt you. It won’t. You will need to determine if the fledgling is injured. Do you see blood? Look closely at the nostrils for blood. Is the bird lying on its side? Is the head tilted to one side? Is the bird shivering? Is the bird out in the open nowhere near bushes or trees? If it appears hurt, make a “nest” as you would for the nestling above. Keep it warm and in a dark, quiet
