Texas Fernland Historical Park Weekly Gas Prices (April 25, 2022) - Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 6.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.76/g today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 10.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand $1.16/g higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $3.35/g yesterday while the most expensive was $4.79/g, a difference of $1.44/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $3.35/g while the highest was $4.79/g, a difference of $1.44/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 4.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.11/g today. The national average is down 13.3 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.24/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: April 25, 2021: $2.60/g (U.S. Average: $2.87/g) April 25, 2020: $1.53/g (U.S. Average: $1.74/g) April 25, 2019: $2.59/g (U.S. Average: $2.88/g) April 25, 2018: $2.54/g (U.S. Average: $2.79/g) April 25, 2017: $2.24/g (U.S. Average: $2.40/g) April 25, 2016: $1.89/g (U.S. Average: $2.14/g) April 25, 2015: $2.31/g (U.S. Average: $2.52/g) April 25, 2014: $3.48/g (U.S. Average: $3.70/g) April 25, 2013: $3.34/g (U.S. Average: $3.51/g) April 25, 2012: $3.74/g (U.S. Average: $3.83/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $3.73/g, down 1.4 cents per gallon from last week's $3.75/g. San Antonio- $3.68/g, up 15.7 cents per gallon from last week's $3.53/g. Austin- $3.73/g, up 9.7 cents per gallon from last week's $3.64/g. “For the first time in over a month, the national average price of gasoline has risen. Primarily, this was due to oil prices that had jumped the prior week, pushing up the price that stations pay for fuel and thus causing them to raise prices," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "The rise has been quite tame in most areas, while others have continued to gently decline. But, with the French election now behind us, there is risk that the EU could pursue harsher sanctions on Russia's energy, which could cause oil prices to rise if it happens something motorists should be on the watch for. In addition, U.S. oil inventories continue to decline, putting additional pressure on prices as the nation's SPR continues to drain and Russia's war on Ukraine remains ongoing. The global imbalance between supply and demand that led to these higher prices continues for the time being." SOURCE GasBuddy

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Food for Thought Diana Anderson
DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com
With a juicery on every corner and a well-stocked beverage section at every health food store, it's super easy to just grab a nutrientpacked refreshment after a yoga class or if you skipped lunch. While a fruit-andveggie-loaded drink sounds righteous in theory, are juices really healthy? "Juices can be part of a healthy diet, but they are not a replacement for whole fruits and veggies, especially because you're not getting the fiber " explains Dana Angela, registered dietician and author of Healthy, Quick and Easy Juicing. “, you’re still getting the nutrients a n d t h e hydration—preferably by making your own juices or buying those with the simplest ingredients." So, what are the healthiest juices? We asked nutritionists how to determine if your beverage has the right benefits. Related Items 1Look at the label. Just because that drink says "healthy" on the label, doesn't mean it's actually good for you. Plus, many
5 Rules For Choosing A Healthy Juice store-bought drinks contain ingredients that negate all that goodness you're hoping for. "Most juices you buy in the market need to be shelf stable, which means they often include added ingredients that are not exactly all-natural," says White. "As a general rule, if you can't pronounce it, investigate what it is." The other thing to watch out for is added sugars. Many brands load on the sweetness to compensate for all the "greenness." Finally, pay attention to portions. White points out that while it may look like a small bottle, often there are two or more servings in there. 2Go cold. If you want to ensure your juice is clean and mean, opt for cold-pressed juices when you can. "Cold-pressed juices are often made in what is called a slow-masticating juicer that has low RPM's and does not produce heat, which helps the juice to retain its nutritional value," explains Megan Roosevelt, an LA-based registered dietitian nutritionist and author of The 5-day Juice Diet. "Still, making your own juice is one of the best
ways to keep your juice lower in sugar and be able to choose your own ingredients that best benefit your health needs." While some of those juicers are pricey, those $8 bottles at the juicery aren't exactly cheap either. 3Pick powerful ingredients. Not all of us are Instagram-worthy health food chefs, whipping up veggie-packed, spiceladen curries. Luckily, juices can become a vehicle for the nutritional powerhouses that are tough to incorporate in your diet. "Ingredients like turmeric fight inflammation. Ginger is an antioxidant that is beneficial for digestion. There are so many ways to mix up your juices and reap the benefits of these superfoods," says White. While fruits are certainly full of good-foryou vitamins, aim to make your juices more veggie based. "You'll want to make sure they are low in s u g a r, w i t h p r i m a r i l y veggies, and some fruits for natural sweetness," says Roosevelt. Veggies like beets and carrots are already on the sweet side.
New Danville Wranglers Have Their Own Ballad
W I L L I S , T X : Attendees at the April 22nd Spring Thing fundraiser for New Danville (formerly known as Tea on the Lawn) were treated at the end of the event with the debut of the music video of the new original song written by New Danville team members John Massey and Dion McInnis. The song is

aptly titled, Wranglers’ Ballad. It can be viewed at Ballad.NewDanville.org. John, a part of New Danville since it was founded by his sister, has played guitar and sang for most of his life, and has led Wranglers (New Danville clients) in song numerous times. Dion, who started at the Willis nonprofit for

special needs adults in March 2021, approached John in May 2021 with an idea – “Would you be interested in working on a song that tells the story of the Wranglers?” Dion took a shot at the lyrics and John worked them to fit a tune that he wrote. The result is a song that is now complemented by images in the new video. The production conveys what happens at New Danville every day. Eva Aguirre, president and CEO of New Danville, said, “I am so proud of Wranglers’ Ballad, particularly because it shows in yet another way that what happens at New Danville, and the heart in which it is done, is truly inspiring. That it was created by team members is

Fruits like pineapple and apples can cut the "green" flavor of your juices, while pomegranate is high in phytochemicals, making it a very powerful fruit source. 4Stick with the season. Whether we're talking juices, salads, or bowls, eating locally and seasonally is always the preferred way to go. "Your juices will taste far better and be more flavorful if your fruits and veggies are in season and at their peak," says White. "For example, citrus and
pineapple are always great in the cooler months, while watermelon is delicious and refreshing in the summer." Check to see what's in season and then plan your juice menu accordingly. 5Don't detox! We all know about the dark underbelly in the juicing world: those all-ornothing detox diets where you drink nothing but juice for several days. Not only is this unhealthy, but you don't need them. "Juices are not a meal replacement, nor are they a replacement for whole
fruits and vegetables. It's a supplement, like a vitamin, [to what you're already eating]," explains White. Plus, actual fruits and veggies are already body detoxifiers in their natural fiber-full form, so skimming it down to a juice and drinking only that for days on end isn't only useless, it's torturous. Clean juices, with the right nutrient-dense ingredients can be a great addition to your diet, but they should never be the basis of it.
perfect. We hope we can take this song to the world as a celebration and tribute to our Wranglers and to the special needs population as a whole.” “I learned that writing poetically is not the same as writing lyrically,” Dion said. “John did a great job taking my early shots at lyrics and modifying them to create the song. His tune gets in your head and never leaves; it is that good. My
favorite line that he added is ‘ Wo u l d y o u l i k e t o try/Maybe something you’ve never dreamed of?’ I think that epitomizes the spirit and culture of New Danville.” John said, “It had been awhile since I had written a song. My wife, who sang harmony on Wranglers’ Ballad, and I sing at church and we have written a few praise songs, but it has been awhile. I was surprised by
Dion’s request, but the idea grew on me quickly. Once the seed was planted, it grew and developed over time. All the staff and volunteers love the Wranglers and I think the song shows it.” New Danville is a rural nonprofit community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and those who need similar services, in Willis, TX.

March Market Review A weekly column by Kent Pendleton March Market Review Despite inflation, economic backdrop remains favorable. The volatility of recent months continued in March, driven by geopolitical events that we believe are unlikely to dissipate soon, a more hawkish Federal Reserve and higher prices. Despite headwinds, domestic equity markets rallied toward the end, making up for some of the earlier losses. The general economic backdrop remains favorable as U.S. consumers, flush with
cash, continue to spend despite rising prices; manufacturing and business spending remain healthy; and the labor market remains robust. Key takeaways for the month: * As expected, the Federal Open Market Committee raised the federal funds rate 25 basis points at its March meeting and indicated that further increases will be needed to return inflation to its 2% goal. * The Russian invasion of Ukraine has lifted oil prices globally, exacerbating inflation and prompting renewed interest in alternative energy sources.
* Earnings trends remain solid and valuation multiples have become more compelling. In addition, we believe that higher Treasury rates coupled with wide spreads and increased municipal/Treasury ratios should bode well for income buyers in both the corporate and municipal markets. The bottom line: Overall, we believe that volatility tied to geopolitical risk is likely to persist over the medium term and adds complexity to the global economic outlook. Despite uncertainty, the U.S. economy looks to have room to
grow, and higher equity prices seem likely. We are constructive on equities and believe that investors should view temporary choppiness as a buying opportunity. Pet Talk: Scratching The Surface of Atopic Dermatitis When pets have environmental allergies, their immune system is overreacting to things like pollen or dust mites.
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – For many people and pets, spring (aka “allergy season”) is a time of excessive sneezing, itching, and scratching. For some pets, however, their allergy season is never ending, lasting into summer, fall and winter. Veterinary dermatologist Dr. Adam Patterson, a clinical associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, discusses allergic skin disease and how to best relieve the itch for affected pets, which can include dogs, cats, horses and other species. “Environmental allergy, or atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition in which the immune system overly reacts to the pollens of grasses, trees and weeds, as well as to
indoor substances like house dust mites, mold and dander,” he said. “Clinical signs may be seasonal or year-round in presentation.” Of these allergens, the most common to affect pets in central Texas are dust mites and grasses, as well as cedar and oak pollen. Many pets are also allergic to flea bites, which can perpetuate the effects of atopic dermatitis. Unlike people who experience lots of sneezing and runny eyes with allergies, pets’ main sign of atopic dermatitis is itching. In addition to scratching, pets may try to relieve an itch by rubbing, licking, chewing, biting, head shaking or scooting. “Common itchy body areas include the face, ears, paws, armpits, groin, rump and anal region,” Patterson said. “Every pet
has its own itch tolerance, which means the intensity and reason(s) for your pet’s itch may not be the same as another animal.” Recurring bacterial and/or yeast skin infections — which appear as red and/or black skin, red bumps, pimples, scabs, dander, hair loss, or thickening skin — often accompany allergic skin disease. Similarly, owners may also notice recurring ear infections that cause itchy red and swollen ears that may leak pus. If a pet is showing any of these signs, a veterinarian can help determine the various causes. If atopic dermatitis is determined to be the cause, in addition to itch relief medications, initial treatments may include baths, flea prevention, and anti-infection medication, as well as a possible change in diet. “Given the safety and effectiveness of many allergy medications today, dogs in central Texas should have allergy signs for at least five to six months out of the year before considering skin testing for environmental allergies in order for the diagnostic tests and treatment to be cost effective over the long haul,” Patterson said. If the condition is left
untreated, it can have mild to serious consequences. “It can cause unrelenting itch, odor, remodeling of the ear canal (an increase in skin thickness and collapse of the ear canal), and multiantibiotic resistant bacterial skin infections,” Patterson said. “Ear canal removal, an expensive s u rg e r y, m a y b e required.” To avoid excessive, costly treatments and
extra discomfort for your pet, make sure to talk to your veterinarian if your pet is showing signs of an environmental allergy to determine a plan, which could even include referral to a veterinary dermatologist. Getting rid of that annoying itch will help make spring, and possibly the entire year, more enjoyable for everyone.

Texas Could Have At Least 150,000 Abandoned or Deteriorated Water Wells AUSTIN – There may be more than 150,000 abandoned or deteriorated water wells in Texas posing safety hazards and contributing to groundwater pollution. Anyone who is aware of abandoned or deteriorated wells is urged to report them to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) at https://www.tdlr.texas.gov /abwells/default.aspx. When filing the report, please include an address or GPS Coordinates and any photos or video of the well, if possible. Abandoned or deteriorated water wells can contaminate groundwater by providing a direct conduit for chemicals and other surface contaminants, such as animal waste and pesticides, to directly enter aquifers. Uncapped wells also present a physical danger to humans and animals who can be severely injured or killed when they fall partially or completely into the well. Landowners who are not sure if there are abandoned water wells on their property should look for plastic, steel, brick or concrete casing (pipe) that may extend above ground, or for a hole in the ground with no apparent bottom. Some abandoned wells have concrete or brick casing extending above ground or a windmill with missing blades. Abandoned or deteriorated well casings or pipes may be cut off at ground level, posing an additional threat. * Wells are “abandoned” when they are not in use, as defined by Texas Occupations Code, Section 1901.255.
* A “deteriorated” well is a well that is causing or likely to cause pollution of any water in the state, including groundwater. Under Section 1901.255 of the Occupations Code, abandoned or deteriorated wells must be plugged or brought into compliance within 180 days of a landowner learning that they have an abandoned or deteriorated well on their property. Landowners are responsible for abandoned or deteriorated water wells on their property. If a well needs to be plugged, they may plug the well themselves (in compliance with Title 16, Texas Administrative Code, Section (76.104 Capping and Plugging Wells Standards) or hire a well driller or pump installer licensed by
TDLR to plug the well or bring the well into compliance. If a landowner chooses to plug the well themselves, they are required to plug the well in accordance with TDLR’s well plugging specifications (https://www.tdlr.texas.go v/wwd/wwdspecs.htm) and submit a State of Texas Plugging Report to TDLR within 30 days from the date the well was plugged. To avoid problems in the future, landowners should install a locking well cap or sanitary well seal – not just a cover over the well – to prevent unauthorized use or entry into the well. Septic systems should be pumped and inspected as often as recommended by the local health department. Care should be taken when
mowing or working near the well. Governor Abbott Statement on Death of Texas National Guard Soldier AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement after the body of a previously missing Texas National Guard soldier was recovered. Last week, Specialist (SPC) Bishop E. Evans, assigned to Operation Lone Star, was reported missing along the Rio Grande River during a
mission related incident in Eagle Pass. "We are heartbroken to learn of the death of SPC Bishop E. Evans who was reported missing in Eagle Pass on Friday," said Governor Abbott. "Our National Guard soldiers risk their lives every day to serve and protect others and we are eternally
grateful for the way SPC Evans heroically served his state and country. I thank the members of the Texas National Guard, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Border Patrol, and local law enforcement for working around the clock to locate this soldier. The Texas
Military Department will continue to provide more updates to the public as they become available. I ask that Texans join Cecilia and me in praying for the family and friends of SPC Evans as they grieve this heartbreaking loss."

Not all of the Christians we may know, have had Christian parents who brought them up in church from a young age. In my family, we had that from my mom, who did that well. There is a short, but so significant phrase from our Bible which states this very important teaching: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8. Why is that short phrase so meaningful? The first part speaks to
ONE IMPORTANT GOAL FOR ALL CHRISTIANS - TO BE CLOSER TO THE LORD the reader to do something first: “Draw near to God…” So we have to make that move, first. Of course, God is there with us in Spirit all the time. He waits for us to give Him our time and attention – first. Then when we have blocked out all outside noises and inside memories of desires, God can give His whole attention to a n s w e r o u r prayers….”and He will draw near to you….” It’s a very small prayer with a huge meaning for us.
Let’s take a look at our best earthly example of how Jesus honored that teaching for His disciples. Here is the whole story of that particular time: “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they

suppose that they will be heard for their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.‘’ Pray, then, in this way: ‘ Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.’ ” “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” Matthew 6: 6-15. When we pray this particular prayer, we are truly doing just one of the many things that Jesus knew would bring us close to our Heavenly
Father. God knew we would go through hard times and would need to realize we could be a part of His heavenly kingdom if we followed His directions of praise to His name. And if we could no longer be tempted by the evil one, then we would follow His good ways and forgive others of all their debts. He also never wants us to go hungry or thirsty, or be tempted to steal from anyone. Please keep praying for the Ukrainians.
