National Rebel Joan of ARC Proudly Signs Texas Society of The Weekly 5 Members with their “UDC Daughters Gas Prices Supplemental Applications” of The (May 2, 2022) - Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 9.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.85/g today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 7.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.25/g higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $2.99/g yesterday while the most expensive was $4.99/g, a difference of $2.00/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $2.99/g while the highest was $4.99/g, a difference of $2.00/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 6.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.17/g today. The national average is down 1 cent per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.29/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: May 2, 2021: $2.60/g (U.S. Average: $2.89/g) May 2, 2020: $1.51/g (U.S. Average: $1.76/g) May 2, 2019: $2.59/g (U.S. Average: $2.90/g) May 2, 2018: $2.57/g (U.S. Average: $2.82/g) May 2, 2017: $2.21/g (U.S. Average: $2.37/g) May 2, 2016: $1.97/g (U.S. Average: $2.22/g) May 2, 2015: $2.39/g (U.S. Average: $2.61/g) May 2, 2014: $3.47/g (U.S. Average: $3.68/g) May 2, 2013: $3.34/g (U.S. Average: $3.53/g) May 2, 2012: $3.68/g (U.S. Average: $3.80/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $3.92/g, up 18.3 cents per gallon from last week's $3.73/g. San Antonio- $3.71/g, up 2.7 cents per gallon from last week's $3.68/g. Austin- $3.81/g, up 7.7 cents per gallon from last week's $3.73/g. “Gasoline prices have continued their rally in the last week with oil prices sustaining higher levels, but the real story has been diesel fuel, which has skyrocketed to its highest level ever seen. Diesel is now $1 per gallon or more in many areas compared to gasoline," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "The meteoric rise in diesel prices is likely to continue for the first half of the week at least, while gasoline prices could continue to see a slow but steady rise. For now, the rising cost of diesel will surely be felt in the grocery store, hardware store or on your next flight as jet fuel prices accelerate, leading to a continued rise in inflation likely to ripple across the economy." Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Food for Thought Diana Anderson

Get ready for the most perfect zucchini chip you’ve ever made! And don’t let the name fool you. These salt and vinegar zucchini chips are actually low sodium and sacrifice zero flavor doing it! Crispy, tangy, salty, and even low calorie and low carb! They do take about 2 hours to bake, but the active time is only about 10 minutes, so you can get busy doing something else. Ingredients Zucchini Zucchini is low in calories, which, along with its relatively neutral flavor, makes it perfect to make just about anything. I’ve sometimes seen it substituted for apples. Zucchini isn’t over the top in terms of the nutrients it

Salt and Vinegar Zucchini Chips contains, though it does have some vitamin C. I love zucchini for its highwater content/low calories, and for how easy it is to grow – or if you don’t garden, for how widely available it is at grocers and its fiber. In this recipe, you’re essentially dehydrating the zucchini, so the water content will be quite low. But that’s what ensures the crispness! A perfect substitute for fried potatoes! Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar is pretty much my allpurpose vinegar. A must for salt and vinegar chips, its tangy quality tends to play on your taste buds similar to salt. So, I was able to use less salt for a heart healthier treat. Olive Oil My go-to oil. High in monounsaturated fats, it’s one of the heart healthiest

oils you can get. Extra virgin olive oil is considered the best. It’s not great for high temperature cooking. It does work great in these zucchini chips though, because you cook them at a low temperature! If you want a great all-purpose oil, regular olive oil is good. You can also use grapeseed oil or avocado oil. A neutrally flavored oil is best for this recipe. Pepper Black pepper is known for its high antioxidant content and has been used for centuries as a flavor enhancer, immune booster, and treatment for various conditions. In fact, it was used as a currency in Europe. Use pepper as much as you like! Salt Okay, so salt isn’t something I use much of in my recipes. But what

are salt and vinegar chips without salt?! Besides, a little is fine, and this recipe does have only a little. Just enough to taste! Dill Dried dill is optional in this recipe. It’s not really traditional in salt and vinegar chips. Fresh dill would be great, too. It kind of brings out a pickle-like flavor with the vinegar. If you don’t care for it, leave it out. Herbs and spices, like dill, are high in antioxidants, and great for heart health and keeping inflammation in check, so use as much as you like! How to Make Salt and Vinegar Zucchini Chips Easy peasy zucchini squeezy! First, preheat your oven to 225 degrees F. Slice your zucchini very thin. Like around 1/16th of an inch. The thicker they are, the longer they’ll

take to bake. Use a mandolin slicer to get nice, even, paper-thin slices! Now, mix the oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper in a bowl large enough to hold the zucchini slices. Whisk to combine. Dump the zucchini slices into the bowl and toss to combine. Make sure to coat both sides of each slice. Then arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet, or two, lined with parchment paper. They can touch each other, but not overlap. They’ll shrink down considerably as they bake. Bake them

for at least two hours. Depending on the type of baking sheet you have and the zucchini thickness, they may take longer. Keep an eye on them around the two-hour mark. Once the zucchini chips come out the oven, s p r i n k l e t h e m immediately with as much dill as you like (or no dill!), fresh or dried. Cool completely, and store in an airtight container. If there is a lot of humidity in the air, the chips may lose their crisp quickly, but will still delight!

In February of 1992, the first class of CASA volunteers, who also served as the organization’s first Board of Directors, were sworn in by Judge Olen Underwood. In 1992, eight volunteer Advocates served 28 children. Last y e a r, 2 8 2 A d v o c a t e s served 596 children – 100% of children in foster care in Montgomery County. In total, CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County

April Market Review A weekly column by Kent Pendleton April Market Review The markets continue their upward trend, supported in part by accommodative fiscal policy from the Federal Reserve, strong gross domestic product (GDP) numbers and solid earnings reports. At a higher level, the combination of fiscal stimulus, potential infrastructure investments and a relatively strong vaccine rollout in the U.S. (more than half the adults have received at least one dose) creates opportunity for a

gradual reopening nationwide. As President Biden celebrated his 100th day in office to close the month, the traditional favorable equity market performance during the so-called “honeymoon” phase continued, with the S&P 500 rallying about 10% over that time frame. The S&P 500 ended April up 5.24%, for its third consecutive positive monthly gain. The Dow J ones and N A S D A Q reached new highs as well. I n Wa s h i n g t o n , infrastructure and tax proposals remain just that – proposals. Congress is

drafting legislation, and Raymond James Washington Policy Analyst Ed Mills expects to see broad compromise in order to secure the necessary votes. Generally speaking, Mills believes we can expect a significant amount of additional federal spending later this year tied to revenue-raising measures. The compromises necessary for passage may create a near-term Goldilocks scenario for the market in terms of further economic stimulus. Pet Talk: Feline Nutrition Part 1: How To Choose The Purr-fect Diet For Your Cat Wild cats eat a diverse, protein-heavy diet, which can sometimes be difficult for pet owners to replicate for their domesticated feline friends. Fortunately, there are several guidelines owners can follow to make sure their cat’s meals are both nutritious and delicious. D r. D e b r a Z o r a n , a professor at the Texas A&M C o l l e g e o f Ve t e r i n a r y Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offers advice for mimicking a cat’s natural diet and finding the best option for your particular pet. When it comes to feline diets, the words complete a n d b a l a n c e d a r e k e y, according to Zoran. Even though cats are carnivores, a meat-only diet will result in fatty acid, vitamin, or mineral deficiencies; therefore, commercial

diets are typically the easiest option for owners because they contain the necessary nutrients to ensure a balanced diet. “Feeding cats a complete and balanced canned food will be the easiest way to have a high protein/low carbohydrate diet that will also help with calorie control and assure your kitty meets their daily water needs,” Zoran said. Canned foods’ ability to increase water intake is a major reason Zoran recommends them over dry foods; cats that eat only dry foods consume less water overall and are more prone to dehydration. “Many indoor cats are prone to health issues, including urinary tract blockages and constipation, from being dehydrated,” she said. “Increased water intake from eating canned

food is an important way to decrease the risk of these problems occurring or reoccurring.” Dry food diets also tend to be higher in fat, carbohydrates, and calories—all of which can increase the risk of obesity. “Dry diets are documented to lead to obesity and diabetes in cats that live indoors,” Zoran said. “Indoor cats typically have less opportunity to exercise, have food continuously available, or are fed too much food.” In general, for healthy adult cats, the best option is a canned food with a protein content of 40% or higher (greater than 10% if the can is greater than 78% water) and a carbohydrate content of 10% or less. Another way to determine this is to make sure that a carbohydrate source is not one of the first

five listed ingredients. “Because each cat or kitten is an individual, just like people, they may have taste or texture preferences and unique dietary needs,” Zoran said. “Anyone who has more than one cat in their house knows that while you may want to feed every cat the same food (for convenience or simplicity), that is not always possible.” For this reason, she recommends tailoring each cat’s diet to its specific needs, life stage, and preferences, in terms of flavor and texture, and making sure that each cat eats only from its own bowl. In addition to their regular canned diet, owners can occasionally treat their cats with small pieces of unseasoned, cooked meats or cat grass, which can be a great source of fiber. Next time you’re

shopping for your cat’s food, take a moment to read the label and make sure your choice is promoting your cat’s overall health and happiness. You’re sure to be rewarded with plenty of purrs at dinner time. Pet Talk is a service of the C o l l e g e o f Ve t e r i n a r y

Diesel Prices Reach New All-Time High, Biggest Premium to Gasoline Ever Tight inventories push diesel to record highs, widest gap to gas prices ever BOSTON -- Diesel prices today reached a new average all-time high of $5.16 per gallon, surpassing the previous record of $5.15 per gallon set on March 10, according to GasBuddy, the leading fuel savings platform providing North American drivers with the most ways to save money on gas. In addition, a second record has been set: diesel prices are now $1 per gallon higher than gasoline prices, surpassing the previous record 98 cent difference set in November, 2008.

“While gasoline prices get much of the attention, diesel, which broadly is the fuel that moves the economy, has quietly surpassed its recent record high as distillate inventories, which include diesel and jet fuel, have plummeted to their lowest level in years,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Should distillate inventories fall another five million barrels, which is less than five percent, they will be at their lowest level in nearly

20 years, compounding the problem. There’s no quick solution as the economy has seen a robust turn around, made worse by Russia’s war on Ukraine as the West fences off Russia’s oil.” Both diesel and gasoline prices spiked to record levels in early to midMarch, largely due to Russia’s war on Ukraine and the response via sanctions on Russian energy. The recent resurgence in diesel prices can be attributed to continued escalations in the situation and plunging inventories of oil and refined products, like diesel, along with recovering

demand as goods move across the country, much of which is powered by diesel fuel in semi-trucks, trains and ships. Diesel prices in the Northeast are likely to rise above any other region due to the loss of refining capacity from both Covidinduced shutdowns and a 2019 fire at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery in 2019. Combined, these issues have caused the loss of nearly half a million barrels in refining capacity. Diesel prices are likely to remain at a substantial premium to gasoline as imbalances persist,

however, refiners are likely adjusting yields to produce as much diesel and jet fuel. conomics favor production of these refined products and refiners chase the higher market value of these fuels. Operation Lone Star Apprehends Over 239.8K Migrants, Continues To Secure The Border AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Texas National Guard continue to work together to secure the border, stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas, and prevent, detect, and interdict transnational criminal

behavior between ports of entry in response to the federal government's unwillingness to address the border crisis. Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, multiagency efforts have led to more than 239,849 migrant apprehensions, along with more than 14,364 criminal

arrests — and more than 11,666 felony charges. Over 4,710 weapons and almost $37 million in currency have been seized. In the fight against fentanyl, DPS has seized over 342 million lethal doses throughout the state. Operation Lone Star continues to fill the

dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration's refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Biden's open border policies.

Brady, Crapo: White House is Illegally Rewriting Obamacare Biden Administration ignores years of legal interpretation of Obamacare while doing nothing to address rising health care costs Although Obamacare has been on the books for more than a decade, the Biden Administration is attempting to illegally and unilaterally change the law, according to a new letter from Ways and Means Republican Leader Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) and Senate Finance

Committee Republican Leader Sen. Mike Crapo (RID). Doing so could exacerbate 40-year high inflation, which is causing prices to rise three times faster than paychecks. Urging the Administration to reverse course, the GOP Leaders write: “[u]nilaterally redefining

the application of the ACA’s insurance affordability standard could result in substantial disruption for workers and job creators alike, in addition to exacerbating 40-year-high inflation through tens of billions in new taxpayer spending. [...] “The Biden Administra-

tion’s attempt to change statutory law without congressional action is both troubling and illegal. The Obama Administration’s Tr e a s u r y D e p a r t m e n t reviewed all arguments regarding the proposed interpretation and found them lacking.”

Devotional Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

Mothers, mothers, and more mothers. How can we celebrate our loving and valuable mothers? It began when Adam was all alone in the Garden of Eden. God created the earth and the heavens – light, darkness, water, trees, vegetation, birds, and beasts of the earth. Then the Bible says: “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” God blessed them and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the

A TRIBUTE TO GOD AND OUR MOTHER FOR GIVING US LIFE earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1: 27 – 28. Since the beginning, mothers have a value of being able to populate the earth, along with the fathers, of course. That’s what God wanted. Here in America, women have lived in a country where we are free to do jobs as well as men, including sports, business positions and being heads of companies. And that also includes having families during the time

of working. M a n y women/mothers now own their own businesses as well as raise a family now. And some dads and moms can work by computer from their home as well as raise the children – some by working day and/or nights. The outset of many computers have caused that type of a “working family.” Still, we can broaden the knowledge of our beautiful world with the whole family being able to take vacations (of learning) to historical, breath-taking places God

has created from our earth and for some, even to outer space adventures at times. God created our earth to be enjoyed and for us to be “in awe” of His creation. For instance, it was my mother and grandmother who took us on trips and sights of the places nearby and far away. We saw deserts, mountains, and even left the state…to view historical and scenic places. We would always research what we were to see, and that would help us remember those special areas and what happened there, for

further studies. Oh, yes, and my husband and I did the very same thing with our children as they grew up. Mothers can be the guiding force that keeps the family together and in focus of what children need to work on as they grow to become adults. The mothers, mostly, are the ones who instill proper etiquette for company, meals, and trips. There was a young man in Jesus’ day who asked about which commandments to truly keep if he could have “eternal life.” Here is

what the Lord Jesus said to that man… “HONOR YOUR F AT H E R A N D MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” Matthew 19: 19. I know many who honor their mothers, and it is reported that “Mother’s Day” is the most heavily traveled day of traffic in this state, of all the holidays celebrated in Texas. So, Dear Readers, please be very careful on Mother’s Day this year. It will be celebrated next Sunday, May 8th !
