Gas Prices ( M a y 9 , 2 0 2 2 ) - Av e r a g e gasoline prices in Texas have risen 12.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.97/g today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 28.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.30/g higher than a year ago. The price of diesel has risen 22.6 cents nationally in the past week and stands at $5.518 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $3.29/g yesterday while the most expensive was $5.29/g, a difference of $2.00/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $3.29/g while the highest was $5.29/g, a difference of $2.00/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 13.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.31/g today. The national average is up 19.6 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.36/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: May 9, 2021: $2.67/g (U.S. Average: $2.95/g) May 9, 2020: $1.52/g (U.S. Average: $1.84/g) May 9, 2019: $2.58/g (U.S. Average: $2.87/g) May 9, 2018: $2.60/g (U.S. Average: $2.84/g) May 9, 2017: $2.17/g (U.S. Average: $2.33/g) May 9, 2016: $1.98/g (U.S. Average: $2.21/g) May 9, 2015: $2.45/g (U.S. Average: $2.66/g) May 9, 2014: $3.43/g (U.S. Average: $3.67/g) May 9, 2013: $3.38/g (U.S. Average: $3.55/g) May 9, 2012: $3.62/g (U.S. Average: $3.74/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $3.97/g, up 5.2 cents per gallon from last week's $3.92/g. San Antonio- $3.92/g, up 21.0 cents per gallon from last week's $3.71/g. Austin- $3.98/g, up 17.0 cents per gallon from last week's $3.81/g. “Gasoline and diesel prices alike saw strong upward momentum last week as oil prices continued to climb after the EU signaled its desire to sanction Russian oil. In addition, U.S. petroleum inventories saw yet another weekly decline as we near the start of summer driving season," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "Not only are diesel prices at a record high, they are at their largest differential to gasoline on record, surpassing the 98-cent difference in 2008 and currently standing at a $1.20 per gallon premium. While motorists filling with gasoline have seen a slight rise in prices, diesel's surge will be a double whammy as diesel prices will soon be passed along to retail channels, further pushing up the cost of goods." Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Food for Thought Diana Anderson

Mushrooms are a wonderful meat substitute if you are thinking of reducing or eliminating animal protein. Across the U.S. specialty mushroom production is growing, making local specialty mushrooms more accessible. I have found the selection at most markets expanding but Whole Foods will have a broader selection of varieties. Crimini are often called baby bellas. These mushrooms do it all, are affordable and easy to find. Maitake are also known as hen of the woods. They are flavor dense and unparalleled in their potential for crispiness. King Trumpet have thick trunks and lend themselves well to largeformat presentations. Their robust texture ensures that they won’t fall apart in stews. Shiitake stay firm as well. Tossed into fried rice or stir fries they can turn golden and take on a meaty chewiness. Oyster mushrooms are versatile and great for braising or shredding. To wash or not to wash? If you put water on any mushroom, it will inhibit browning. For a gentle but effective cleaning you can use a dry pastry brush or paper towel to remove debris. To store them remember they need to breathe. Keep them from drying out without getting slimy by storing them in a close paper bag or an open plastic bag with a moistened towel to cover. Properly stored they will

Three additional batches of pure Florida strain l a rg e m o u t h b a s s w e r e spawned in 2019 from ShareLunkers acquired that year. The early success of the program allowed TPWD Inland Fisheries to set a date of spring 2022 for the first spawning and statewide stocking of ShareLunker descendants. Several more batches of pure Florida ShareLunker offspring were produced since 2019 and broodfish are currently being reared at three TPWD Inland Fisheries hatcheries. The year-round Toyota ShareLunker Program offers four levels of participation for catching bass over eight pounds, or

Plant Based Meals last about a week. Though stems are edible they can taste woody. You can freeze them if you don’t want that flavor/texture for your current dish and take them out to use when making a broth-based recipe. Mushroom Miso Risotto Good broth makes great risotto, and one of the fastest homemade broths contains just one ingredient: miso. Whisked into hot water, miso creates an almost-instant broth that brings a richness, saltiness, and complexity that anchors the dish. As the mushrooms cook along with the rice, they infuse the grains and broth with their flavor. Criminis will get the job done, but if you find maitakes, snag ’em—they’ll add an incomparable savory earthiness. Ingredients: ¼ cup white or yellow miso Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil 1large onion, finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 1/2 cups arborio or carnaroli rice ¾ cup dry white wine or sake 1lb. mushrooms (such as crimini and/or maitake), thinly sliced or torn into bite-size pieces

2 4 i n c h e s , i n Te x a s . ShareLunker entry classes include the Lunker Class (8lb+), Elite Class (10lb+), and Legend Class (13lb+). During the first three months of the season (Jan. 1 through March 31), anglers who reel in a 13+ pound bass can loan it to TPWD for the ShareLunker selective breeding and stocking program. The continued donation of 13-plus pound fish by anglers will be critical to the ongoing maintenance and replacement of future broodfish. Once a lunker is reeled in, anglers need to enter the catch data on the Toyota ShareLunker mobile app – available for free from t h e A p p l e A p p Store and Google Play – or on the Toyota ShareLunker o n l i n e a p p at TexasSharelunker.com. 4Tbsp. unsalted butter Furikake or sesame seeds, mild red pepper flakes, and kelp seasoning (for serving) Preparation: Step 1 Place miso in a large saucepan and slowly whisk in 6 cups water (this will help prevent lumps). Bring to a simmer over mediumhigh heat, then reduce heat to low just to keep broth warm; season with salt and a little pepper (enough so that it tastes like a good soup). Step 2 Meanwhile, heat oil in a large Dutch oven or other heavy pot over medium. Add onion and a large pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until very soft, 8–10 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring often, until softened and beginning to turn golden around the edges, about 4 minutes. Step 3 Add rice to pot and cook, stirring often, until grains are translucent, about 3 minutes. Add wine and cook, stirring often, until completely evaporated. Stir in mushrooms and 1 cup broth. Cook, stirring, until mushrooms are softened, and broth is absorbed, 3–4 minutes. Maintaining a simmer, continue to add broth ½-cupful at a time, stirring to incorporate and waiting until each addition is absorbed before adding more. Cook until rice is tender, and all of the broth is incorporated (risotto should be a bit on the soupier side at this point but will continue to thicken). If you run out of broth before rice is done, just add hot water. Stir butter into risotto; taste and season with salt if needed. addition to providing basic catch information, anglers can also provide a DNA scale sample from their lunker bass to TPWD researchers for genetic analysis. T h e T o y o t a ShareLunker Program is made possible in part by the generous sponsorship of Toyota. Toyota is a longtime supporter of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation and TPWD, providing major funding for a wide variety of fisheries, state parks and wildlife projects. Prize donors include Bass Pro Shops, Lake Fork Ta x i d e r m y, A m e r i c a n Fishing Tackle Co., Stanley Jigs and 6th Sense Lures. Step 4 Divide risotto among bowls; sprinkle some furikake (or make something similar with sesame seeds, red pepper flakes, and a bit of kelp seasoning) on top. Mushroom Piccata Briny, puckery, buttery piccata—but with lightly dredged and browned mushrooms instead of chicken or veal. Using two t y p e s o f fat—oil and butter—is essential here. Sear the mushrooms in oil over high heat so they get nicely crisped, and their flavor intensifies, then finish the sauce with a couple of tablespoons of butter. How Different Types of Investment Income are Taxed A weekly column by Kent Pendleton

Learn how interest income, capital gains, dividends and retirement income are treated at filing time. The federal tax system is not exactly straightforward. There are myriad deductions and credits, various tax brackets, additional payroll and Medicare surtaxes, and a slew of different categories to help us define our income … for tax purposes. You’d think there’d be only two: regular income and investment income. Regular income would be what you get in your paycheck, and investment income would be

the money you earn from investments. But even something as seemingly simple as investment income has subcategories, each taxed differently from the next. Let’s break it down. Interest income There are certificates of deposit and high-yield savings accounts (rare these days), and bonds. Interest income becomes part of your regular income and is generally taxed at your marginal rate during the year in which you receive it, even if it’s reinvested. This is what gets reported on your 1099INT forms. Capital gains When you sell a security, any positive difference

between what you paid and what you earned is called a capital gain. If you bought 1,000 shares for example, at $14 each and sold them for $20,000, you’d have a $6,000 gain that would be subject to taxes. For most people, securities held over a year (long-term capital gains) will either incur a 0%, 15% or 20% tax. Short-term capital gains are taxed at your ordinary income tax rate. Dividends Dividend income is derived from equities that pay shareholders dividends on a regular basis. Qualified dividends are treated to the same preferred rates as longterm capital gains. Retirement income

Withdrawals from traditional IRAs, 401(k)s or annuities and pension income are typically taxable, while withdrawals from Roth IRAs or employer-sponsored plans funded with after-tax contributions are not taxable. But some subcategories are trickier. If you make more than $25,000, or $32,000 if married filing jointly, up to 85% of your Social Security benefits will be taxed. Income from an immediate annuity is taxed if the annuity was purchased with money that has never been taxed, say in an IRA. Interest income from municipal bonds is generally exempt from federal taxes, but it could still be subject to state or local

income taxes, alternative minimum tax, or partial taxation of the income in certain instances. These examples are merely guidelines. It’s important to remember that taxes aren’t the only thing to consider. Your personal tax and financial advisors can help you select appropriate income-generating securities for your needs and determine your exact tax liability. Next steps As you plan for what taxes you’ll pay on your investments, start by: * Understanding the different types of income * Considering your entire investment portfolio * Asking your advisor

Gas Prices Reach New Record High: $4.36 Per Gallon Previous March record falls, gas prices surge as EU sets stage to curb Russian oil BOSTON -- It’s going to be a long year for motorists, as gas prices set a fresh record at the pump today, rising above the previous all-time high of $4.35 per gallon set on March 10, according to GasBuddy, the leading fuel savings platform providing North American drivers the most ways to save money on gas. The national average price of gas is now $4.36 per gallon, and could continue to climb through Memorial Day as summer road trip season begins and

Fuel prices in the U.S. decreased slightly after spiking in March, as the situation between Russia and Ukraine continued, but simmered. Prices began to rise again over the last few weeks as the odds of the European Union sanctioning Russian oil increased. Just in the last seven days, the national average rose over

rebounds ahead of the summer driving season,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “There’s little, if any, good news about fuel prices heading into summer, and the problem could become worse should we see an above average hurricane season, which could knock out refinery capacity at a time we badly need it as refined product inventories continue to plummet. GasBuddy’s Summer Travel survey will be released in the weeks ahead, providing motorists with an outlook on summer

gas prices and travel trends. In addition, you can read more about the previous record set here. About GasBuddy GasBuddy is the leading fuel savings platform providing North American drivers with the most ways to save money on gas. GasBuddy has delivered more than $3 billion in cumulative savings to its users through providing real-time gas price information at 150,000+ stations, offering cash back rewards on purchases with brand partners, and through the Pay with GasBuddy™ payments

card that offers cents-off per gallon at virtually all gas stations across the US. As one of the most highlyrated apps in the history of the App Store, GasBuddy has been downloaded nearly 100 million times. Acquired by PDI Software in 2021, GasBuddy’s publishing and software businesses enable the world’s leading fuel, convenience, QSR and CPG companies to shorten the distance between the fueling public and their brands. Montgomery County Hospital District EMS Transforms 911 Emergency Montgomery County Hospital District EMS Transforms 911 Emergency Care with the ET3 Model MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – Montgomery County Hospital District EMS has been chosen to participate in a trial federal government program meant to reduce unnecessary trips to the hospital for residents who call 911 with non-emergent medical issues. Patients who call 911 will be evaluated by a certified paramedic to determine if they are eligible to – instead of being transported to the hospital – participate in a live telehealth visit with an ER physician. In consultation with the paramedic team, the choice of going to the

hospital or participating in a telehealth visit is the patient’s to make. You may be surprised to learn MCHD responds to a high percentage of low acuity calls that would qualify for a telehealth visit, like toothaches, sore throats, or sprained ankles, for instance. Having the option for a telehealth visit allows the patient to speak with an emergency physician while in their home to develop a treatment plan that meets their needs. To accomplish this goal, MCHD EMS, which is responsible for all medical 911 responses in Montg o m e r y C o u n t y, h a s partnered with Tele911, Inc. to integrate telemedicine and patient navigation into the EMS

system. This collaboration allows MCHD to provide even better, patientcentered care. This telehealth service is not available for patients who are experiencing a lifethreatening or timesensitive emergency. After a nationwide search, MCHD was one of only 205 EMS agencies across the U.S. selected to participate in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services so-called ET3 (Emergency Triage, Treat, and Transport (ET3) program. The provision of emergency medicine telehealth services and social worker follow-ups helps MCHD provide an even higher level of patient care, address social determinants of health, and will, potentially, reduce response times to true

emergencies. “Most beneficiaries who call 911 with a medical emergency are transported to a hospital emergency department, even when a lower-acuity destination may be more appropriate,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. “The participants in our ET3 Model will be able to deliver care to patients at the right time and place.” Montgomery County Hospital District’s mission is to care for the indigent and provide EMS services while protecting the interest of taxpayers and ensuring long-term stability through fund development. AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Texas National Guard are continuing to work together to secure the border, stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas, and prevent, detect, and interdict transnational criminal behavior between ports of entry. Since the launch of Operation Lone Star (OLS), multi-agency efforts have led to more

than 242,000 migrant apprehensions, along with more than 14,000 criminal arrests — and more than 12,000 felony charges. Over 4,700 weapons and over $38 million in currency have been seized. In the fight against fentanyl, DPS has seized over 344 million lethal doses throughout the state. Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration's refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is

apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Biden's open border policies. Coast Guard and Border Patrol to apprehend illegal immigrants and seize smuggled drugs on April 29 near the Brownsville Ship Canal. The Airmen tracked the smugglers on the ground using thermal t e c h n o l o g y, w h i l e Coastguardsmen followed the traffickers by boat. The joint effort led to the apprehension of three illegal immigrants and 168.2 pounds of marijuana. ( P H O TO : Te x a s Military Department)

Devotional Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

The book in our Bible called “Romans” is written by Paul, a learned theologian whom God chose to be a scholar that could think like a lawyer. So, in the book of Romans, he explains about sin, wealth, and the judgments of God. God is absolutely for us. Paul wrote this scriptural truth for all Christians, telling us of God’s unfailing love for all in death, powers, and separation: “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor

GOD’S WORD IS LIVING AND IS BREATHING LIFE INTO US principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8: 38-39. Now Paul’s purpose in the book of Romans is trying to explain to all of us – then and now, that God is always for us and not against us and that Jesus was sent to demonstrate to all the love of Jesus and God for all who will accept it. And that nothing on earth can pull us away from accepting their love.

What a Great Truth. No wonder The Bible is still on the “Best Seller” list! That is the First Truth. Nothing can separate us from His love for us. This week is the first in a series of five “Truths,” so let’s continue ferreting out what keeps giving us light and life to carry on in a lost and fallen world. The Second Truth we’ll pursue for a full life with God, concerns healing. With Jesus as our example on earth, He went about healing all who came to Him with illnesses. Now forward to Jesus on the cross…

“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,…and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness for by His wounds you were healed.” First Peter 2:21 and 24. It’s a hard thing to know and understand that Jesus was so harshly beaten for our sins. All the wounds He took were to be passed down to us so that we could be healed of our infirmities.

There are many other verses in our Bible that we can also pray for ourselves and for others who need to be healed. We can claim our healing through what Jesus suffered on the cross. I remember praying for one of my neighbors one day. She had been asked to be in a big fashion show at a place in another city. So while we were talking about that, she told me her ankle just decided to swell up that morning, and it was still so swollen that she couldn’t even get a pair of shoes on. As we talked on, I thought she

might be open to let me pray for her. So I asked if I could pray. She said, “Oh, yes, please do! I just have to be able to go and model for this company!” So I bent down, placed my hand on her ankle and prayed. Afterwards, she thanked me and went inside to get ready. Later on I heard her garage door open, and I watched her leave, but I hadn’t heard a word about her ankle. The next morning, she came over and thanked me. Her ankle had gone down just fine, and she was healed before the evening program had started. Thank You, Jesus!

Oak Shade Cemetery The month of April is and was designated as Confederate History Month. The month of May brings on a busy time. All 80 plus chapters in the Texas Division will be installing new officers soon, plans are already in the works for our state convention to be held in October. I hope that the previous articles have given, you, the readers an insight as to what the United Daughters of the Confederacy is all about. As a member of the local, Thomas Jefferson Stubbs 2523 Conroe chapter, I hope when we post an event coming up, perhaps you can attend. Our chapter enjoys having a float in the Montgomery Christmas

parade, hosting a tea in the early spring, acting as docents in the historical houses, having grave marker dedications to honor our Confederate ancestors, giving militiary cross awards and placing wreaths at the grave site of veterans of ALL the wars, at the Oak Wood Cemetery in Conroe. In January on the Sunday closest to Robert E. Lee's birthday (January 19), we will celebrate Confederate Heroes Day at a location and date to be announced later. In the month of March or April we will observe Confederate Memorial Day, also the date and location will be announced later. Our chapter had the privilege to honor the

gravesite of a Confederate veteran at the Oak Shade Cemetery in Tarkington Prairie this past January. There are many other Confederate veterans buried in that cemetery, that opened in 1845 and we plan to honor all of them. On May 7, 2022 the Thomas Jefferson Stubbs 2523 Conroe Chapter, Texas Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy met for their monthly meeting. During this meeting a very solemn and meaningful event took place, the bestowal of the National Defense Medal posthumously given in the name of Raymond Gerald Davis, who served in the Korean War from January 16, 1951 to February 19, 1952. He served in the United States

Army as a corporal in the 31st Signal Company. The new incoming Recorder of Military Service Awards officer for the chapter, Rebecca Endebrock, presided over the ceremony, is also the niece of the deceased. Raymond Davis, son of the deceased received the National Defense Medal and certificate with honor in his heart, for he and his family. The Confederate ancestor who was the great grandfather of Cpl. Davis was Elijah S. Davis, who

served in Company I, 6th Regiment, Infantry from the state of Alabama. The United Daughters of the Confederacy are honored to bestow these medals to active service men and women, or those who have retired and to the families of those who are deceased.
