Samaritans Class of 2021 Completes Project Weekly Gas Prices for CASA Child Advocates Celebrates (May 10, 2021) - Texas gas prices have risen 6.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.67/g t o d a y, a c c o r d i n g t o GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Gas prices in Texas are 8.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.16/g higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.35/g today while the most expensive is $3.49/g, a difference of $1.14/g. The lowest price in the state today is $2.35/g while the highest is $3.49/g, a difference of $1.14/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 4.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.95/g today. The national average is up 10.0 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.12/g higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa$2.86/g, up 2.2 cents per gallon from last week's $2.84/g. San Antonio- $2.52/g, up 7.3 cents per gallon from last week's $2.44/g. Austin- $2.56/g, up 7.1 cents per gallon from last week's $2.49/g. "While average gas prices jumped last week as the nation continues to see COVID-19 recovery, all eyes are now on the Colonial Pipeline and the fact a cyberattack has completely shut all lines, leading to what could become a major challenge for fuel delivery," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "The situation is growing more intense each day that passes without the pipeline restarting, and motorists are advised to show extreme restraint or exacerbate and prolong the challenges. If the pipeline returns to service in the next day or two, the challenges will be minimal, but if full restart doesn't happen by then, we're likely to see a slight rise in gas prices, but m o r e i m p o r t a n t l y, challenges for motorists needing fuel in Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Virginia, Northern Florida and surrounding areas. I'm hopeful the situation will quickly improve as multiple levels of government are involved, this may become a nightmare should it continue just ahead of the start of the summer driving season. GasBuddy will continue to watch the situation and update as necessary." SOURCE GasBuddy

CONROE, Texas – Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2021, comprised of 43 leaders in the County, selected a four-part initiative submitted by CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County as their class project. Since last fall, the class has worked with CASA staff to complete the individual projects to benefit children in foster care in
Montgomery County. “We are so proud of this class and their d e d i c a t i o n t o accomplishing all four of these projects for CASA,” says Sarah Rhea, Leadership Montgomery C o u n t y ’s E x e c u t i v e Director. “Class projects allow class members to further develop their leadership skills while leaving a lasting legacy in the community. I can
assure you that each of these class members now has a special place in their heart for CASA and the difference they make in our community.” Rhea continues, “We are so grateful to CASA for giving the class this opportunity to be a part of its mission.” One of the projects the class took on was CASA’s “Game of Life” for teens in foster care. The event
was held in-person in 2019 but had to be postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2019, teens rotated through stations to learn various life skills to help prepare them to age out of the foster care system. CASA Child Advocates turned to LMC to innovate and transform the event for 2021, and the LMC team

When it comes to boneless skinless chicken breasts, people tend to either love ‘em or hate ‘em. For those in the latter group, this chicken piccata recipe is here to convert you. A few simple steps create a dish every bit as good as restaurant versions, ready to serve alongside a towering green salad and a simple pasta or good loaf of crusty bread to soak up the sauce.

The second project for the LMC class of 2021 included updates and upgrades to four visitation rooms and a conference room at the Child Protective Services (CPS) office in Conroe. The visitation rooms host parents and their children for regular, supervised visits while children are in foster care. The rooms, once bright and cheerful, were showing their age. The LMC team raised funds, planned themes, and worked with a local artist and muralist to complete the design updates on all of the CPS rooms, including a beach-themed room, a camping room, a flower garden room, and a jungle room. As a result of fundraising efforts, the group was also able to add flat screen televisions, Historic Cemetery were selected. Preparation Step 1 Slice chicken breasts in half crosswise into 4 cutlets and lightly pound each piece between sheets of plastic wrap until an even thickness (about ½" thick or less). Season lightly with salt. Place flour in a medium shallow bowl. Working one at a time, place cutlets in bowl and toss to coat in flour. Knock off excess flour and transfer to a plate. Step 2 Heat 2 Tbsp. oil in a large skillet over mediumhigh. Working in batches if needed to avoid
overcrowding the pan, cook cutlets, without moving them, until deeply browned underneath, about 2 minutes. Turn over and cook on the other side just until chicken is nearly cooked through, about 30 seconds. Transfer to a clean plate. Step 3 Add garlic and remaining 1 Tbsp. oil to the skillet and cook, stirring often and reducing heat if needed to keep garlic from scorching, until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Add wine and capers and cook, swirling pan and scraping up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of skillet, until
liquid is almost completely evaporated, about 3 minutes. Add ½ cup water, followed by the butter. Swirl pan vigorously while butter melts to help it form an emulsion with water, about 1 minute. Step 4 Return chicken to skillet and simmer until chicken is cooked through and sauce is thick enough to coat a spoon, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir lemon juice into sauce, season with salt. Transfer chicken and sauce to a platter and top with parsley; serve with lemon wedges.
Blue-Ray DVD players, baby monitors, and a deep c l e a n o f t h e f a c i l i t y. Plaques will be posted in all of the rooms in recognition of those who donated items and funds. The third project for the class was the creation of an online resource directory for volunteer CASA Advocates to help them source needs while assigned to a child’s case. The LMC resource guide team worked tirelessly over many months to build a geo-responsive, searchable, resources website featuring more than 200 organizations across 30 categories, including housing assistance, tutoring, counseling, job preparation, crisis and assistance hotlines, and much more. CASA Child Advocates plans to launch the directory site for their volunteers in June, 2021. The fourth and final
project completed by the LMC class of 2021 was the assessment and development of a disaster recovery plan for CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County to help the organization become better prepared for future potential disasters. The LMC team worked with CASA’s executive director to create a detailed, comprehensive, 30 page plan, and in late April, delivered 24 disaster plan manuals to the organization – one for every CASA staff member. “ L e a d e r s h i p Montgomery County’s donation of time, resources and expertise has been invaluable in allowing us to better serve children in care,” said CASA Executive Director, Ann Marie Ronsman. “The resources they created and improved upon will live on and positively impact the most vulnerable children
and families in our community for many years into the future.” Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) speak up for the best interests of children who have been removed from their home and are under the Court's jurisdiction. CASA’s goal is to continue to provide a court-appointed volunteer to serve as Guardian ad Litem for every child in the foster care system. For the past 29 years, CASA has been training volunteers, raising awareness in the community, and working to end the cycle of child abuse in Montgomery County. The LMC class of 2021 would like to thank The Howard Hughes C o r p o r a t i o n , Vo g t Engineering, Caldwell Companies, Michael Huffine of Silver Rock Productions, Judith Dollar of Jude Studios, Michelle
McGinnis of Friendly Web Consulting, Product Acuity Consulting, Lone Star Family Health Center, Conroe ISD & Conroe ISD Police Activity League, Montgomery County Food Bank, Texas CASA, and various private contributors. Their donations of time, funds, resources and support, made completion of the four individual projects possible. Comments According to Doc
Biden's Gamble: Will Pulling Troops Revive Extremist Threat? unavoidably will lose some intelligence leverage against the extremist threat, although he suggested the losses would be manageable. “The U.S. government’s ability to collect and act on threats will diminish. That’s simply a fact,” Burns said. "It is also a fact, h o w e v e r, t h a t a f t e r withdrawal, whenever that time comes, the CIA and all of our partners in the U. S. government will retain a suite of capabilities, some of it remaining in place, some of them that we will generate, that can help us to anticipate and contest any rebuilding effort.” There were 2,500 to 3,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan when Biden took office, the smallest number since early in the war. The number peaked at 100,000 during President Barack Obama’s first term. As U.S. war casualties have declined, so has the A m e r i c a n p u b l i c ’s attention. The war was barely mentioned during last year’s presidential contest and pulling the plug may prove politically popular. Yet worries remain. Stephen Biddle, a Columbia University professor who has advised U.S. commanders in Afghanistan, says it's possible al-Qaida could reestablish its base structure in Afghanistan once the Americans and their coalition partners leave. The Taliban in Afghanistan pledged in a February 2020 agreement with the Trump administration that they would not allow al-Qaida or other extremist groups to use Afghan territory to threaten the United States. But that deal may be imperiled by Biden's decision not to complete the withdrawal of forces by May 1, as the Trump
administration had promised. The bigger peril, Biddle said in an email exchange, is that the withdrawal could lead to the collapse of Afghan security forces and multisided civil warfare involving Taliban factions and others "in a morelethal version of the civil war of the 1990s.” “This would be a humanitarian disaster for Afghans — far w o r s e t h a n t o d a y ’s insurgency," he said. More broadly, the absence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan could lead to further instability in a region with two rival nuclear powers — Pakistan and India, which have insurgencies of their own to contend with. “This is already a dangerous part of the world; making it worse by allowing the collapse of the Afghan government is the biggest risk here,” Biddle said. At a previously pivotal moment in the war, Obama took a similar view. When he announced a surge of 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan in December 2009, he argued against trying to contain extremist threats in the AfghanistanPakistan region only with what the U.S. military calls “over-the-horizon” forces — troops and aircraft positioned beyond Afghan borders. “To abandon this area now — and to rely only on efforts against al-Qaida from a distance — would significantly hamper our ability to keep the pressure on al-Qaida and create an unacceptable risk of additional attacks on our homeland and our allies,” Obama said. So Obama went ahead with a troop buildup aimed at hitting the Taliban so hard that they would agree to negotiate a peace deal. It didn't work. The

Folk’s, President Joe Biden is stupid, and he actually believes that we the citizens are stupid, so he continually lies to us. Biden by nature it seems takes blind actions such as Executive Action with out any planning of the follow up of how that action effects the United States as a nation, the military, or its citizens. Presently, we are pulling our entire military program out of Afghanistan without President Biden leaving any evidence of negotiation, agreement or treaty to maintain the peace between Afghanistan citizens and the terrorist alQaida . Then it was about shoring up a weak government and its weak army so that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida could never again threaten the United States. Now it's about over. With bin BRUSSELS — At its start, America’s war in Afghanistan was about Laden long since dead and the United States not suffering another major attack, President Joe Biden is promising to end America’s longest war and move on to what he believes are bigger, more consequential challenges posed by a resurgent Russia and a rising China. Even so, by withdrawing the remaining few thousand U.S. troops in Afghanistan by the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Biden is taking a calculated risk that extremists in Afghanistan can be countered by U.S. and partner forces elsewhere in the region — and that he won’t become the president who underestimated the resilience and reach of extremists who still aim to attack the United States. Even after President Donald Trump authorized a more muscular military approach to the Taliban in 2017. The hard-hit militant group did not give up. It agreed to negotiate with the Afghan government, but those talks have stalled. It's difficult to judge what has been gained in the 12 years since Obama escalated the war. Afghan security forces likely are stronger, although their resilience will be tested in the absence of U.S. support they grew to rely upon. The Afghan government has not strengthened its authority across the country, and the Pentagon argues that its intense focus on countering insurgents there and in the Middle East has been such a drain on resources that the U.S. is losing ground against China and Russia. The war has cost more than 2,300 U.S. lives and immeasurable suffering among Afghans since the United States invaded in October 2001. Ten years into the war, in May 2011, U.S. forces killed bin Laden in Pakistan, and for a short time it seemed possible that Washington would see an opening for ending the war. A few weeks after bin Laden's death, a young

Currently, high school students are required to take an economics course, but that course doesn't typically cover personal financial planning or financial liter acy. Th is s es s io n Senator Alvarado introduced legislation that would change that. Senate Bill 1063 would allow school districts to offer and high school students to take a hybrid course that would consist of both economics and personal financial literacy. Students taking this course would fulfill the existing economics credit requirement. This course would teach students about money, investing, securing wealth, and navigating other important financial matters. Many students graduate without an understanding of what investing means or what credit is or how it works. This class would give students the freedom financial literacy brings and empower them to be financially independent after graduation. Senate Bill 1063 passed the Senate unanimously and is currently working it's way through the House.
Fifth Circuit Rules: Local Officials Responsible For Enforcing State Election Law AUSTIN – Attorney General Paxton’s team convinced the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to reject a Texas Democratic Party lawsuit trying to reinstate “pop-up” voting, where Democrats opened temporary polling places to benefit their voters at the expense of all Texans.
The Democratic Party and its plaintiffs cannot sue to stop HB 1888, a bill passed to end this electioneering by requiring local election officials to keep temporary polling places open for longer hours so that all Texans, and not just preferred Democratic voters, could access them.
T h e F i f t h Circuit has directed the district court to dismiss the Democrats’ challenges. “Local officials are responsible for administering and enforcing election law as it pertains to polling places, and they must fulfill their duty in order to stave off voter fraud and ensure
that every legal vote cast by an eligible voter counts,” said Attorney General Paxton. “The Fifth Circuit correctly determined that local election officials and early voting clerks must enforce these laws, and I commend them for remanding this clearly partisan case for dismissal.”

Devotional Gratitude, Appreciation, and Thankfulness as a Lifestyle Spreading the Word
By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net
The dictionary describes “gratitude” as: “being thankful and ready to return kindness.” * It starts in the heart and flows freely into anyone doing any nice action toward another person. It is anyone who acknowledges a kind act or gives a gift to us. It means we’re grateful that the person who gives has thought about us in a loving way. One of the first to receive our gratitude
should be our God. Next would be our Savior, Jesus, and then, the Holy Spirit who helps us each day,.then the giver. The very breath we breathe comes from the Father. He loves us so much, that His grace lasts for our whole life…and then beyond. Here is our directive: “Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:28 – 29.

Now we come to “appreciation.” This word is almost the same as gratitude, but is used more like giving a gift to someone to show gratitude in a different way, as an offering. It’s like when the Wise Men brought their gifts to the Christ child. They appreciated the fact that God would send His only Son to all men on the earth to be a king. And so they brought Him their most important gifts on their very long journey. They came as ones who were kind enough to show appreciation from their hearts for God sending His Son to earth as a King.
Jesus walked about Jerusalem and the Galilee, talking, healing, and feeding the people who followed Him. He gave the men He picked out as His disciples, a great opportunity for them to travel. He was much appreciated by all who heard Him speak and were witnesses to His many miracles. Appreciate means to “esteem highly, and to raise in value.” * This last word is a picture of all three words together…being “thankful.” Thankfulness comes out of the heart of a Christian, naturally. I was allowed to minister
to many of the people in Mexico in past years. I so loved all of them. We, a team from the church, were invited by very poor people who lived in tents by railroad tracks, to come to one tent. They had all cooked us a wonderful meal and wanted to serve us after we had told them about the love of Jesus. Many had given their hearts to the Lord after our presentation. They fed us even with coffee and dessert at the end. All that was done came with great thankfulness from each one, even the children. All was done with great appreciation from us. God moved in a
special way in all of our hearts, and I will never forget their kindness to us. I can, even after all these years, close my eyes and still see the gratefulness in each heart. This brings me to my last few words for all… you can never, as hard as you try, out-give God. His blessings never cease. Follow this: “Give thanks to the Lord...For His lovingkindness is everlasting.” First Chronicles 16:34. *From The Oxford American Dictionary of Current English.

Community Third Coast Organic Foods Debuts, Pouring Deliciousness On Salads Conroe, TX– Six longtime Montgomery County residents have recently launched Third Coast Organic Foods, a certified organic food manufacturing business, offering a v a r i e t y o f s u g a r- f r e e organic wine vinaigrette salad dressings. These delicious and healthy vinaigrettes come in five flavors: Raspberry Wine, Lemon Mustard, Classic Red Wine, Balsamic Italian, and Haute Pepper. By design, they are very light in texture and taste, so they w o n ’t o v e r w h e l m t h e natural flavors of the salad’s ingredients. Each is made with organic and non-GMO ingredients, with no sugar added. The family, a brother and sister with their respective spouses and adult children, not quite ready to completely retire, had an idea that was springboarded when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. At the time, brother John Massey was ready to reduce his work schedule to part-time while his wife Therisa was ready to embrace her retirement after 32 years in education. J o h n ’s s i s t e r, K a t h y Sanders and her husband Steve both had retired several years earlier from their respective professions. While restricted
from traveling and local outings due to COVID-19, the family members saw an opportunity to keep active while pursuing a love of great food and created a line of healthy, organic sugar-free food products with all the taste and none of the guilt. Armed with two decades of food manufacturing knowledge plus healthcare, non-profit and education experience, they delved into starting Third Coast Organic Foods early last year. With a company slogan of “To Your Health!”, the family members are excited to have created these delicious, highquality natural food products to help people enjoy a healthier lifestyle. Organic products do not contain any toxic chemicals (such as synthetic pesticides, arseniccontaining herbicides, chemical food additives such as flavorings, color and preservatives, antibiotics, synthetic hormones, and industrial solvents). In addition to the absence of artificial chemicals, "organic" means not genetically engineered (Non-GMO), and having not used ionizing irradiation, which can cause freeradicals and the removal of vitamins. The USDA organic seal found on all

certified organic products ensures that the food is ‘whole’ and automatically Non-GMO. Partner Kathy Sanders notes, “I have thoroughly enjoyed creating this new business with my family over the past year. It was a tedious year-long process to obtain our USDA Organic Certification but we did it! Within that year
we successfully produced a product ready to market. We a r e p r o u d o f o u r delicious dressings, which are lovingly packaged by hand, and we can’t wait to see where the future takes us.” Following the initial online e-commerce, Sanders said the group aims to diversify their offerings, such as gift
packages, marinades, and sugar-free cocktail mixers, and eventually have a presence in local farmer’s markets and area grocers. The family-owned organic food manufacturing plant operates from their newly-developed commercial kitchen located in south Conroe, in the northeast area of I-45 and Hwy. 242 just north of

New SHSU Scholarship Honors Alumna’s Journey to Teaching Sam Houston State University President, Alisa W h i t e , h e l p e d N B C ’s TODAY show, along with reporter Jenna Bush H a g e r, h o n o r a f e l l o w Bearkat on National Teacher ’s Day. Wanda Smith’s story of perseverance was featured on the national morning television show, and White was there to share a surprise scholarship announcement from Brenham, Texas. “Wanda is an inspiration to us all at Sam Houston State,” White said. “She is truly a worthy person for such an honor, and we are
excited to share her love of teaching with future Bearkats.” Inspired by Smith’s determination to become a teacher, Stacey Edmonson, Dean of the College of Education, and her team, created The Wanda Smith ‘Make a Difference’ Scholarship. The award will go to a first-generation Sam Houston State student, pursuing a career in teaching. After pushing through college while working two jobs and raising a family, Smith crossed the commencement stage in 2010,
and became a teacher at Brenham Elementary School, where she was once a custodian and bus monitor. Edmonson believes Smith’s achievement in earning the degree and career she always wanted, has the power to truly ‘make a difference’ by motivating others. “The new scholarship we have established in Wanda’s name will provide support to other Sam Houston State students following their passion to become a teacher,” Edmonson said. “I hope it encourages others

The Friends of the Charles B. Stewart Library need your shoes! The Friends of the Charles B. Stewart Library (FOL) need your shoes! We will be conducting a community wide shoe fundraiser May 15 - July 14 to assist the library with programs, equipment, and materials that are not currently supported by county funds. A collection box to accept gently used and new shoes will be at the entrance to the library. The FOL hopes to raise money for the library, and by doing so, we also assist families in developing nations. We challenge you to clean out your closets, donate your shoes, and support your library! 202 Bessie Price Owen Drive, Montgomery, Texas.
