(May 17, 2021) - Texas gas prices have risen 6.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.76/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Gas prices in Texas are 16.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.21/g higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.39/g today while the most expensive is $3.99/g, a difference of $1.60/g. The lowest price in the state today is $2.39/g while the highest is $ 3 . 9 9 / g , a d i ff e r e n c e o f $1.60/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 6.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.03/g today. The national average is up 16.8 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.17/g higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $2.95/g, up 8.4 cents per gallon from last week's $2.86/g. San Antonio- $2.67/g, up 10.6 cents per gallon from last week's $2.57/g. Austin- $2.69/g, up 9.1 cents per gallon from last week's $2.60/g. "The national average gas price surged last week thanks to big price jumps in Southeastern states due to the previously shut down Colonial Pipeline, but most areas outside that region saw smaller fluctuations," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "With the pipeline now back in service, I expect prices to come down in the hardest hit states, specifically the Carolinas, Georgia, Te n n e s s e e , F l o r i d a a n d Virginia. The drops should lead the national average to soon fall back under the $3 per gallon mark, but motorists shouldn't get too excited- prices may start to head higher in a few weeks should Memorial Day gasoline demand be red hot. In addition, motorists in the affected areas should see outage numbers continue to decline this week, especially early in the week when gasoline demand tends to be lowest. I'm optimistic that there will be enough recovery by Memorial Day for motorists in these states to fill up without having to search for gasoline." GasBuddy is the authoritative voice for gas prices and the only source for station-level data spanning nearly two decades. Unlike AAA's once daily survey covering credit card transactions at 100,000 stations and the Lundberg Survey, updated once every two weeks based on 7,000 gas stations, GasBuddy's survey updates 288 times every day from the most diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country. Keep Us Fed Montgomery County Expands to Serve Magnolia; Increases Community Partnerships K e e p U S F e d Montgomery County (KUSF) continues to expand its service area and establish new partnerships with businesses and nonprofit organizations. In April, KUSF began recovering food donations from its 9th Kroger store, located at 6616 Fm 1488 Road in Magnolia. This partnership means thousands of pounds of nutritious food per week is recovered by our team of volunteers daily and delivered to non-profit partners serving the food insecure. In addition, two more businesses have stepped up to alleviate hunger through food donations: Chipotle Mexican Grill located at FM 1488 in Magnolia and Chick-fil-A located on Eva Street in Montgomery. During the week of staff training, Chipotle provided 2,381 pounds of food, enough for nearly 2,000 meals that benefitted 10 recipient partners.

Growing food donations enables Keep US Fed to not only help our existing network of 30 non-profit recipient partners meet more needs but also establish new partnerships. In March and April, we were able to begin working with Impact Church of the Woodlands, Adult and Teen Challenge in Magnolia, and RCCG Tower of Refuge in Spring. Impact Church of the Woodlands launched its food pantry on March 31st, 2021, serving clients every Wednesday from 4-7pm. Senior Pastor Dr. Roche Coleman said, “we see the pantry as the bridge” where we can meet people’s physical needs but also minister to their spiritual needs. The pantry has enabled Impact Church to build relationships with a diverse group of Montgomery County residents, many who visit weekly. They estimate

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Smoothies Food for Thought Diana Anderson

DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com

The smoothie, a healthy blended drink made of fruits and vegetables, has been gaining popularity for quite some time now. You see people toting these drinks literally everywhere they go, and for all kinds of purposes. People started using them to replace some meals in an attempt to be healthy. And that’s no surprise. Smoothies are indeed healthy, thanks to their healthy ingredients such as fresh fruits and vegetables. You can even make them healthier with the help of superfood additions like flax seed, chia seed, psyllium powder and hemp seeds. All these ingredients provide the smoothie chock-full of essential

vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients important and beneficial to the human body. During the 1960s and 1970s in the United States, there was a rebirth in m a c r o b i o t i c vegetarianism. This was when Flower Power and Hippies were on the rise. People were starting to go back to their roots, starting to be at one with nature. They started going vegan, turning towards organic and natural products. People also started paying more attention to eating right and getting healthy. During these two decades, health food stores started popping up all over the country. These stores then started selling blended fruit drinks. They were catering to what their customers were demanding. During this era, Jack Lalanne was one of the first juicing and smoothie advocates. Jack Lalanne was an American fitness,

exercise, and nutrition expert. He was very vocal about the benefits of juices and smoothies to one’s health. He was the first person in the US to open a gym/health food store and the first to come up with a weight loss breakfast meal replacement drink. Some of his smoothie recipes are still quite popular today. By the way Jack Lalanne lived to be 96. In 1973, lactose intolerant Steve Kuhnau founded the first Smoothie King brand. He had been experimenting with recipes for years, looking for the perfect blend that he could enjoy. Because of this, the health drink eventually evolved and later included other ingredients, like vegetables, milk, vitamins, and supplements. Smoothies require one important item and that is a good blender. You don’t have to spend big bucks on a Vita Mix because a Nutribullet works just fine.

Once you have this item you can begin loading fruits, veggies, water or tea and ice. It is best to have a 4-6 ounce serving daily. This is a case where more is not better. When you are loading your blender ask yourself if this number of fruits/veggies is something you would eat for a meal. This idea is to keep what you ask your body to digest and absorb to a natural level. If you do it daily and change up the ingredients as much as possible you will really propel your health. As far as additions to your smoothie I like to stick with the natural ones mentioned above. Most Americans get plenty of protein. I don’t see the need to add any under normal circumstances. There is a category of additions that I whole heartedly believe in and these are omega-3 super seeds. We hear a lot about omega 3’s (think fish

oil/salmon). This is because we get soooo many omega 6’s in our typical diet (think all t h i n g s processed/vegetable oils). The ration of omega 3 to omega 6 is a marker of health. We should be intaking a ration of 1:1 but American’s typically take in, a consequently keep within their body a ration of 1: 15-17. Our goal is to balance this ratio which means that we need an influx of omega-3’s in our diet. Hello, smoothie. Flaxseed – excellent source of omega 3 and soluble fiber which is why it’s a traditional remedy for constipation. 1 tablespoon is great. Beware though these should be bought whole and ground thoroughly which using them in a smoothie accomplishes. Chia seeds – also a great source of omega 3 and more fiber than flaxseed making it one of the top sources of fiber in

the world. Hemp seeds – Less omega 3’s than flax or chia and less fiber but they have complete proteins, meaning they contain all the essential amino acids. Rather than give “recipes” for smoothies I would encourage you to experiment with what you have on hand. In general, aim for about ¾ veg to ¼ fruit. Frozen blueberries, part of a frozen banana or apple are all great choices that will sweeten things up nicely. Any fresh greens, including lettuces like arugula and romaine work well along with misc. vegetables like a beet or bits of carrot will give it some sweetness. I love the taste of food but this is one area where I don’t let my tastebuds rule. Each ingredient I put in is for the purpose of literally feeding my bodies needs and not the pleasure of the experience however it’s surprising how satisfying that can be.

adapted by Tim Kelly from the book by Richard Hooker. M.A.S.H. stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, and joining it are two unpredictable madcaps, Hawkeye Pierce and “Duke”. They can’t be dealt with casually, however, because they are also two of the best chest surgeons in South Korea. The thread of this effort helps tie together the pileup of comic adventures that pyramid right before the eyes of your astonished and hysterical audience! Hawkeye has a scene with a woman psychiatrist who believes he’s been trying to lobster-trap mermaids in a rice paddy! There’s a jolly encounter with the baby talking Bonwit sisters, the worst tapdancing act the U.S.O. ever sent overseas. A sergeant is selling dumb GIs fishing rights in the Bay of Phum. Radar

O’Reilly, a soldier with incredible hearing, anticipates things before they happen. The proprietor of a painless dental clinic is cured of dark moods by the recreation of an old monster movie—and a monster! Texas Parks and Wildlife Department created a program to reestablish the population of eastern wild turkeys in East Texas. According to TPWD, rapid changes in habitat and unregulated harvest of the eastern wild turkey near the turn of the 20th century led to such a severe depletion that the turkeys were eliminated from the area. In 1979, TPWD began releasing wild eastern turkeys they had trapped in other states to the area. Now, the agency has started "super stocking" the turkeys. The program began in 2014 and continues to this day. Super stocking means releasing a large number of birds in a specific area so they have a better chance of establishing a population.

Texas receives $15.8 billion in pandemic aid, more for counties and cities The most recent round of pandemic stimulus funding brought in billions of dollars for Texas and local governments, including cities and counties. This money comes with less restrictions on what it can be used for and some of it will go directly to smaller cities for the first time. It can be used to fill holes in municipal budgets; hire government employees including teachers, police officers, and firefighters; and fund housing, mental health services, and other government programs. It can also go toward some infrastructure projects, such as expanding broadband.

Science, and Transportation, today applauded the adoption of his amendment to the Endless Frontiers Act building on his previous bill, the Blocking Evasive Attempts t o M a n i p u l a t e Signals or BEAMS Act, to prevent the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from exploiting Federal Communications Commission (FCC) loopholes in order to propagandize to Americans through stations entangled with Chinese state-owned media outlets such as Phoenix T V. S p e c i f i c a l l y , t h e amendment cites a provision under the Communications Act, which prohibits a foreign government from holding a radio station license, to include the transfer of permits or licenses to an entity that is subject to “undue influence” by the CCP or the People’s Republic of China. Upon the adoption of his amendment, Sen. Cruz said: “Right now, CCP-linked outlets are openly trying to purchase radio stations inside

the U.S. and across our borders, with the aim of controlling what Americans see, hear, and ultimately think. There’s no justification for allowing our greatest geopolitical threat to spend billions of dollars every year parroting talking points on American airwaves covering up unflattering and politically inconvenient truths about its totalitarian regime. “This amendment is a major step toward thwarting China’s attempts to wage information warfare, and is a part of a larger fight to untangle the United States from China’s propaganda efforts and counter the CCP’s threats.” Sen. Cruz previously introduced the BEAMS Act in 2020 to amend the Brinkley Act in the Communications Act of 1934 to prohibit the FCC from issuing licenses that the Chinese were exploiting to broadcast propaganda into the United States from across the border with Mexico. In September 2018, Sen. Cruz sent a letter to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai about this issue. The Endless Frontiers Act advanced out of committee with six other Cruz-led

amendments, including: * An amendment facilitating cooperation with our close friends and allies—Israel, Taiwan, and Five Eyes nations—and excluding nations which engage in discriminatory boycott, divestment, and sanctioning (BDS) efforts against Israel and Jews living anywhere in Israel. * An amendment to invest $100 million in projects for extracting rare earth elements and other critical minerals. The amendment contained portions of Sen. Cruz’s bill, the ORE Act. The ORE Act works to end U.S. dependence on China for rare earth elements and other critical minerals used to manufacture our defense technologies and high tech products by establishing a supply chain for these minerals in the U.S., including by requiring the U.S. Department of Defense to source these minerals domestically. * An amendment greatly restricting the ability of the U.S. government to share our nuclear technology and information with China. Previous administrations had transferred enormous amounts

of such technology to the Chinese Communist Party, at great harm to US national s e c u r i t y. S e n . C r u z ’s amendment ensures that will not be allowed to happen again. * An amendment to address Chinese espionage at U.S. universities and the threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party’s activities at American educational institutions, including the CCP’s Confucius Institutes. * An amendment to expand a secure computing enclave pilot program, which will help provide for the secure storage of federally funded research data, especially at smaller colleges and universities, and keep it safe from theft and expropriation by hostile foreign actors. * An amendment to prevent the removal of Huawei, an espionage tool of the Chinese Communist Party masquerading as a technology company, from the Department of Commerce’s Entities List, unless the Secretary of Commerce first certifies that it does not pose an ongoing threat to the critical infrastructure of the United States or its allies.

Devotional A Synopsis of The Glory of God - In Heaven and Earth Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

There are many beautiful words describi n g “ g l o r y ” … h o n o r, praise, adoration, beauty, radiance, magnificence, resplendence, brilliance, and more. I’m sure of this: when we see GOD in all His glory, words will not describe His radiance. It makes me think of how John reacted when he saw Jesus in Revelation 1: 12 – 17. John said this:” When I saw Him, I fell at His feet

like a dead man.” Revelation 1”17. No one but Moses has ever seen GOD. And GOD only gave him a very brief moment of His back but not His face. (Exodus 33: 23) I believe, as many beautiful things there are in nature and even in handmade things, that nothing can even come close to our radiant God’s beauty. I’m sure, like John, the apostle, we would not be able to stand in that kind of glory. Many people of God have had dreams and visions about their encounters in heaven. My mother had a conversa-

tion with an angel of much “light.” She was sound asleep and her hearing aids and glasses were right by her bed on a small table. Mom, Gil and I were on vacation in Colorado at the time. They had both been sick, but I planned to stay in Mom’s room with her, through the night. I wasn’t sick, but evidently Mom was worried that I would be sick, also. So I stayed in her room that night. She woke me up after her “visitation” in the middle of the night, explaining what she saw like this:” Suddenly I woke up and this room was filled with bright

LIGHT! It was all around me. And the “angel” had white clothes on and came over to bend down and give me a message, and I didn’t even have my hearing aids on as she or he, whispered to me: “I want to let you know that you are well now, and that Gail won’t be sick at all!” (My mom was a great worrier.) And all of us were fine the next day, just as the angel had said! To explain more of the glory of God, He is a reflection of the beauty of His Spirit. We are also a reflection of His Spirit if we believe His Word in our Bible and remain faithful in seeking to

know Him better. The more we seek to know Him, the closer we come to being a “reflection” of His glory. God’s Spirit is full of beauty. It’s a beauty that cannot be duplicated by anyone here. It emanates from within His character and reflects all that is in great purity. No one has ever seen God, yet we can “feel” His presence when we need Him the most. We know God can send angels to us in dire circumstances to sooth our worried soul and let us know He won’t leave or forsake us. All Moses had to do was trust God to deliver the

Israelites, and He did. All He had to do was to lead the children of Israel to their “promised” land. And He did! So, what do we do? Here is one purpose told to us by Jesus: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5: 14 – 16.

Community GOING NATIVE By Cheryl Conley If you’re like me, you’re making regular trips to the nursery to replace plants lost during the big freeze in February. I’ve decided to plant more native plants and those s p e c i f i c a l l y r e c o mm e n d e d f o r Te x a s landscapes because of the b e n e f i t s t h e y o f f e r. Certain plants, trees and shrubs are better suited to our soil and climate conditions and are more resistant to insects and diseases. Some of the plants, shrubs and trees you might want to consider are: * Turk’s cap – some nurseries refer to this shrub as a Drummond wax mallow. It gets 2 to 3 feet tall and prefers partial shade. It gets bright red flowers and got its name because the flower r e s e m b l e s a Tu r k i s h turban.

* Dwarf Mexican petunia – this plant gets about a foot tall and spreads so make sure you give it plenty of room. If it gets out of hand, you can always dig up the plants that are spreading too far. It likes sandy soil. * Gulf coast muhly grass – this is a green, airy ornamental grass getting 2 to 3 feet tall. Its real beauty happens in the fall when the top foot or so turns a lovely purple. I love these en masse! * Texas lantana – talk about a tough plant! Lantana grows best in full sun. It flowers profusely and once established, requires very little care. * Eastern purple coneflower – This beautiful plant blooms profusely spring through summer and attracts butterflies. * Heartleaf rosemallow – this is a type of hibiscus. It produces bright red flowers all year as long as

it stays above freezing. It’s very drought-tolerant. * Texas sage – this is a shrub that produces purple, bell-shaped flowers year-round. It can reach 8 feet tall but it looks best if you keep it pruned back. * Nuttall Oak – this is one of the best large shade trees to plant in the Houston area. It’s a red oak that is native to Houston. It can be difficult to find, however. * Drake elm – this is a fast-growing shade tree and is also known as a C h i n e s e e l m . I t ’s a beautiful tree and can survive in many soil conditions. Some nurseries in the area have sections that are devoted to native plants. This makes it much easier to plan your landscaping. You can also do a search on the internet for native Texas plants. Happy gardening!

Life-Long Learning Inspires 75-Year-Old to Complete Physics Degree at SHSU Story by Emily Binetti/Photos by Brian Blalock Some people are driven to continuous learning at all stages of life—whether entering college for the first time, restarting in a new career in industry, or maybe even while celebrating a 75th birthday. For James W. Floyd, the quest for new knowledge is represented by the many career fields he has explored throughout his life and his persistence in life-long learning. The United States Navy veteran has experience in marketing, law, aviation, trucking, and real estate. Yet, with many backgrounds and years of professional accomplishment, Floyd, at 75-yearsold, has reached another milestone: earning a physics degree from Sam Houston

State University. In 1964, at the age of 18, Floyd followed his father’s path by enlisting in the Navy. While on deployment he took college correspondence courses and discovered applications of physics and mathematics in his work as a radar operator. After returning to civilian life, he began work in the physics program at Wright State University, but changed tracks to graduate with a marketing degree. As the first in his family with a college degree, Floyd inspired his siblings, and eventually even his mother, to follow his lead in pursuing college degrees as well. Throughout the years, Floyd always held his physics textbooks close—even keeping them in the cabin of his 18-

wheeler at a time when he owned and managed a small trucking company. As time passed, his desire grew to return to his academic passion for physics. “I had been planning forever to get my degree in physics,” Floyd said. “When I visited the Sam Houston campus, the chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Dr. Joel Walker, took the time to sit down and meet with me. He said something that was one of the best things to ever happen to me. He asked, ‘why don’t you go back to school?’” That was just the encouragement he needed to finally pursue a life-long dream. “Mr. Floyd visited my office in the fall of 2016 and expressed interest in studying physics, a subject

which had caught his attention as a small boy,” Walker said. “I invited him to audit an introductory physics and math course. He dedicated himself to this effort and excelled. In the following term, he registered for classes as a regular student.
