Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce Over $1 Billion In Pandemic Food Benefits For Texas Families AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide more than $1 billion in food benefits through the federal Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program to families with children who have temporarily lost access to free or discounted school meals due to COVID-19related school closures. P-EBT provides a onetime benefit of $285 per child, which can be used in the same way as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits to pay for groceries. P-EBT will be administered through a coordinated effort by the HHSC, the Texas Department of Agriculture, and Texas Education Agency. "I thank the U.S. Department of Agriculture for providing these emergency benefits to Texas families, and for the swift action of our state agencies to administer these benefits across the state," said Governor Abbott. "This program will expand access to healthy and nutritious food for families and children in need as the state continues to respond to COVID-19." "Families across our state have had to rapidly adjust to the impacts of this pandemic and we’re thankful to our many state and federal partners who were able to work together for our fellow Texans," said HHS Executive Commissioner Phil Wilson. "These emergency benefits will provide additional assistance to those families on free and reduced-price meal plans, giving greater access to nutritious food for children

Re-opening the Crighton Governor Abbott Thank you for s u p p o r t i n g S TA G E RIGHT and the historic Crighton Theatre. It is though the many volunteers that we are able to provide you with entertainment. Live theatre is a unique shared experience. It can be aided but not replicated with technology. As Texas re-opens, large venues such as the Crighton will be the last to open due to social distancing. What is the plan? Our long term plans include completing our capital campaigns for renovating the Crighton and building a S t a g e R i g h t storage/rehearsal facility to support programming at the Crighton. If you are able to help us, awesome! However, we know that many in our community are still hurting. Perhaps we've lost our jobs or need grocery delivery. Maybe you just need someone to talk to. We are seeking volunteers to help us all get through this. Meanwhile, we continue to prepare for upcoming productions through Zoom and Facebook rehearsals. We are upgrading our cleaning

These classes may begin as soon as June 1st. “Today, tomorrow, and every day going forward is one step closer to medical discoveries that can treat and protect people from COVID-19—but until that day comes, our focus is keeping Texans safe while restoring their ability to get back to work, open their businesses, pay their bills, and put food on their tables," said Governor Abbott. "By continuing to use safe practices, we are slowing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting our most vulnerable. Now more than ever, we need to work together as one Texas. Suggestions For Mindful Eating: Sauces to upgrade any meal Food for Thought Diana Anderson

DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com

A delicious sauce can take a plain meal up to whole different level and frequently without much extra work. It’s easy and healthy to simply grill up a protein and vegetable but can get boring before long. Having an inventory of different sauces you can match to the flavor of the meal can solve this problem and bring some excitement back to your meal preparation. I’m sharing some of my favorites. Mushroom-Red Wine Sauce You don’t need to cook a whole beef roast in order to enjoy this full-bodied sauce. The richness comes from quickly sautéed mushrooms and red wine, simmered just until the

mixture begins to thicken. Spoon the sauce over steak or beef tenderloin. It would also be delicious on a baked potato topped with crumbled blue cheese. Ingredients * 1 tablespoon butter * 1 teaspoon olive oil * 1 (8-oz.) pkg. presliced cremini mushrooms * 1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary * 1/8 teaspoon salt * 1/8 teaspoon pepper * 1/2 cup red wine * 3/4 cup unsalted chicken stock * 1 teaspoon cornstarch * 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary How to Make It: Melt butter with olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high. Add mushrooms, 1 tsp. minced fresh rosemary, salt, and pepper; sauté 6 minutes. Add wine, chicken stock, and cornstarch; cook 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with

1/2 tsp. minced fresh rosemary. I like to keep some canned mushrooms on hand in case I don’t have any fresh to use in this recipe. The texture is different but it definitely works Peanut Sauce The warmth and zing of fresh ginger and garlic put bottled versions of this sauce out of the running. For heat, stir in a generous pinch of crushed red pepper. Drizzle the sauce over grilled chicken or shrimp skewers. You can also use as a dip for spring rolls or toss with a soba noodle salad. You can substitute apple cider vinegar for the rice vinegar (regular white vinegar would be too strong). Ingredients * 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter * 1/2 cup water * 1 tablespoon reducedsodium soy sauce ( or

liquid Aminos) * 1 tablespoon grated peeled fresh ginger * 1 teaspoon brown sugar * 1 teaspoon minced garlic * 1 teaspoon unseasoned rice vinegar How to Make It: Combine peanut butter, water, soy sauce, ginger, brown sugar, minced garlic, and vinegar in a bowl, stirring with a whisk until smooth. Chili Miso Garlic Sauce Just four ingredients deliver big umami flavor with a hint of heat thanks to the chili garlic sauce. It pairs well with most proteins--I like it with shrimp, chicken, or tofu. Thin leftover sauce with a little sesame oil for a quick salad dressing. Ingredients * 2 tablespoons white or yellow miso paste * 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce

* 1 teaspoon fish sauce * 6 tablespoons toasted sesame oil How to Make It: Combine miso paste, chili garlic sauce, and fish sauce in a medium bowl; stir with a whisk until well blended. Slowly whisk in sesame oil until blended. How easy is that? Some of the ingredients above may be unusual to you but I urge you to go ahead and purchase them as they will last a very long time. The miso will have to be refrigerated but the fish sauce does well in the pantry. I ordered a bottle of Red Boat Fish Sauce online because of it’s good reputation but grocery stores carry alternatives. It is a common ingredient in Thai recipes. The miso paste comes in red and white and is available at Kroger. The white is more commonly called for in recipes. I use two tablespoons with some rice vinegar, sugar, garlic and

soy sauce to marinade fish for a few hours before broiling. It is really good with salmon for an Asian flair. Lemon Tahini Lemon tahini sauce brings a fresh Mediterranean taste to your meal rotation, but your not limited to just the traditional dishes. This sauce is fantastic on all vegetables. It uses tahini, which is a main ingredient in hummus and is based on sesame seeds, which have a whole host of health benefits. Ingredients: 1 cup tahini 1 cup water Juice of 1 large lemon 1-2 cloves of garlic 1 tsp of ground cumin (optional) Fresh ground salt and pepper to taste How to make: Mix all ingredients in a food processor and blend. Adjust based on taste preferences.

Ferrets As Pets The furry animals can make great pets, but they may require some special attention, vet says. COLLEGE STATION, May 15, 2020 – Pets can come in all shapes and sizes. While some animal lovers may consider themselves dog or cat people, others enjoy smaller pets, also referred to as “pocket pets,” like ferrets. Many people like ferrets because they are relatively low maintenance, similar to a cat, according to Dr. Alice Blue-McLendon, a clinical associate professor at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Unlike cats, ferrets are happy to spend part of their day inside of a cage, which can allow their owner to rest easy knowing that their pet is safe from harm and easily accessible in case of an emergency. The general rule is that ferret cages should be the largest you can afford that fits in your house. Like any other animal, however, ferrets should be given plenty of time outside of their cages to run around and get exercise. BlueMcLendon said they may even play with other pets in the home, most often with cats and smaller dogs. “All ferrets need to be

allowed bigger areas to run in, whether it's a bedroom or living room, but they should never be in a house unsupervised, because they eat all kinds of little things,” Blue-McLendon said. “One of the things potential owners need to be aware of is that pet ferrets are really curious, so they'll eat what we would consider foreign bodies, which means they eat things that can then get stuck in their stomach or intestines that can cause illness and death, if not dealt with,” she said. Pet ferrets also can have an odor if they haven’t been spayed or neutered, according to BlueMcLendon. “Pet ferrets should get spayed or neutered, and some people will get them de-scented,” BlueMcLendon said. De-scenting is a surgery that removes some of the glands that produce odor. Pet owners should consult their veterinarian to see if this procedure is right for them. To keep your home clean and reduce any foul smells, ferrets can be trained to use a litter box, just like pet cats. “Ferrets naturally will

go to a certain spot, so oftentimes owners will just put the litter pan in that spot to get them to use it,” BlueMcLendon said. “Some of them will inherently use a litter pan because they're generally neat little animals.” Blue-McLendon said the time commitment associated with having a ferret is about the same as a cat. “You've got to clean their litter pan, make sure they have food and fresh water, and give them love and attention,” she said. “Be sure that you've spent

the time to know about the general husbandry.” Ferrets live on a simple diet, but they’ll need to have constant access to their food since they tend to eat many meals throughout the day. “There's a number of commercial ferret diets on the market that can be supplemented with additional treats,” BlueMcLendon said. Healthy treats for pet ferrets include bits of cooked egg or meat, like chicken. When considering getting any new pet, BlueMcLendon believes future

pet owners should do their research before making the decision. “Before people get ferrets, just like all small mammals, they should really do their homework and consider whether they are prepared to put in the time that it takes to give their ferret exercise in their house,” Blue-McLendon said. Comments According to Doc “A Guide To Enlightenment And Possible Insight to Solving Immediate And Long Term Problems And Near Coming Problems When This Tragedy Is Over.” Walden Happenings By Doc Fennessy The opinions expressed in this editorial do not necessarily reflect those of MCN.

As the beat goes on and the world turns, the Coronavirus-19 still has a death hold and economic tragedy on the world’s society; especially America!!! I am still continuing my series of prominent authors of professions somewhat related to assisting people in serious situations in order to provide information, insight, suggestions and guides of how to adjust their lives after a traumatic life style tragedy. This week’s author is Lisa Learner. Folks, Lifestyle author Lisa Learner is a transformational coach who helps people ready to make a change in their lives. She is an intuitive empath, a law of attraction expert and channels divine energy to give appropriate guidance and direction. Lisa uses her extensive study in quantum physics, metaphysics, and the laws of the universe to empower her clients to change patterns in their lives. She helps them to release what is holding them back to re-frame what is possible so they can live a life that is fulfilling, more purposeful and more joyful. Lisa is a mixed media artist, lover of nature, all things organic and is most passionate about her experiences traveling internationally throughout Europe and Asia. Her training in various energy work modalities include hypnotherapy.

This article first appeared in the “Wake-Up World” and republished on April 9th, 2020 in the weekly Sunday Family Houmour Journal. The following text are Lisa Learner’s unabridged words. “What’s happening right now is the greatest awakening we’ve ever seen. Whether you are a light worker or just waking up to the whole consciousness thing, there is something for everyone to learn. The world is shifting and changing. There’s no doubt about that. The old ways of being, that are no longer sustainable, will be unrecognizable on the other side of this. We are coming together in ways, mentally and spiritually, unlike any other period of time. It’s an emotional time, one that needs to be honored with kindness and compassion. People are grieving. They are grieving their loved ones and what was. Let yourself be where you are. Allow yourself to be in it. Feel what you feel and let your emotions move through you. It’s the way to the other side. Most of you are being granted the time to slow down and look at how you want your life to be. How you are spending this time? Are you watching the news, sitting in the fear or are you doing those things you always wanted to do that make you feel alive? Part of the process of becoming conscious or more conscious, is being keenly aware of what your thoughts are and connecting within to find your answers. We have 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day. Are your thoughts positive or are you feeling anxious and in survival mode? If you are stuck in the fear, you’re most likely walking around feeling out

of control. If there seems to be no way out, then surrender may be a good option. Don’t sit in the worry. It will just create more circumstances to worry about. You can choose to move through this process in an empowered way and if you don’t, you’ll feel like a victim to your circumstances. Not always easy, I know, but imperative for your mental health and for manifesting what you want. You have the ability in any moment, regardless of what is happening, to choose a different thought. It is possible with practice. Find a space where you can get quiet and start listening to what’s happening in your head. Ask for answers to your questions, whatever the questions are, and be open to hearing the answers. Answers come in all forms. Whether you feel inspired to take a certain action, you have a knowing of what your next step is or you just feel you are supposed to be doing something other than what you are doing. Now is the time to be still and listen for the answers. If you have been becoming conscious for some time now, this is a time to release really old, deep seated patterns, maybe even from other lifetimes, not yet released. Will you go back to the way you were living? What is this time period making you realize about your life? You get to decide what you want to create. If your world can look like anything, what would that look like? There are beautiful things happening in this world. Be cognizant of what you focus on and how you choose to react. Here’s what you can do right now to feel better: Let yourself feel what you’re

feeling, but let it move through you. When you allow yourself to be in the feeling, it will eventually subside. Start asking yourself some questions. Be in curiosity. This energy will allow the answers to show up. This is great opportunity to become conscious of what your thoughts are and how you are living. Ask yourself how you can do better? That could mean more self care, being kinder to yourself, or others. Practice radical self acceptance and love yourself more! Focus on what you can control. Make choices based on how you want to feel. If a fearful thought comes up, notice the thought and then choose a different one based in trust. If you are having a hard time with this, get up and move your body in some way. This will get you out of survival mode. Are you stepping outside to breathe the fresh air? Are you able to get yourself in the present in the moment? Being in nature is a great way to get into alignment and feeling good. Be in gratitude. Gratitude is one of the best ways to shift your thoughts and energy. List 3 things you are grateful for, everyday. Studies show this changes the neural pathways in your brain. Remember that nothing is permanent. Take small action steps to get you to the next moment. When you take small steps to find something to feel good about, it will shift your entire

Connect into your heart. Connect to your ancient wisdom. How do you feel? When you think of a certain situation, does it give you anxiety or does it fill you with peace? Take notice of ho w you are living your life and what changes could be made right now in this moment. When nothing is certain, everything is possible. Find your trust even in the midst of this pandemic. Connect to whatever your belief system is and follow your path. this period, do it with i n t e n t i o n . T h e r e ’s a tremendous opening for transformation and change awaits. Wherever you are in the process, be really kind and gentle with yourself. Now is the time to have compassion, for yourself and others. We are all one and we all have an effect on one another. Texas has been focused on reopening responsibly, and our efforts to increase testing capacity and contact tracing efforts have allowed our citizens to safely return to work. Because of increased testing, we have seen an increase in positive cases – as to be expected. The great news is, even with increased testing, the positivity rate is down. This means that

even though we are testing more people, the percentage of people testing positive is decreasing. In fact, the positivity rate has decreased 15% since Governor Abbott began reopening Texas, and it’s down 2/3 from its peak in April. Over the weekend, the positivity rate dropped below 5% for the first time since the beginning of April. Just as important as

positivity rates are COVID-19 hospitalization rates. In my home of Montgomery County, hospitalizations have shown a downward trend since May 1st. In the state overall, hospitalizations have not spiked since the state reopened, and there are currently 17,000 available beds. Plus, Texas has the lowest death rate per

capita of the top ten U.S. states by case count. Bottom line? While the mainstream media continues to manipulate the statistics and distort facts to misrepresent the situation in Texas, we’ve been able to open up our economy safely, without an increase in positive case percentage.

TxDOT Receives $75M to Improve Rural Transit During Coronavirus Outbreak WASHINGTON – The Texas Transportation Department (TxDOT) was awarded a federal grant of $74,581,554 to improve transportation infrastructure in rural areas to help transit providers continue to operate throughout the novel coronavirus outbreak, U.S. Senator

they can in response to the spread of the coronavirus, we in Washington should give them everything they need to succeed,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I’m thankful to the Trump Administration for encouraging transit improvement in rural areas.” The grant will enable

rural transit providers to continue operating established transit routes and to add new services to aid communities, including necessary trips to work and medical appointments. Some services such as meal delivery and other critical services are also being provided.

reducedprice meals at school before the statewide school closure are eligible for PEBT benefits. Families who were certified for the free or reduced-price school meals program after in-person instruction at schools ended due to COVID-19 are also eligible to receive the benefit. Families with children aged 5 to 18 who received SNAP food benefits for the month of March, when school campuses first closed, will automatically receive P-EBT on their current Lone Star Card by May 22. Families who have children certified for free or reduced-price meals during the 2019-20 school year but did not receive SNAP benefits for the month of March will need to apply. Families with children who received meals at no cost to them

because their schools are defined as Community Eligibility Provision or Provision II schools also need to apply. Those families will receive a notification from their school district by May 31 which will include eligibility information and how to access the application. The application will be open from June 1 to June 30, and applications will be processed in the order they are received. After completing the application, eligible families will receive benefits on a new Texas P-EBT card in the mail. V i s i t hhs.texas.gov/pebt to learn more. About the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP provides nutrition benefits to supplement the food budget of families in need, so they can purchase healthy food and move toward self-sufficiency. In

Texas, SNAP benefits are put onto the Lone Star Card (EBT card), which can be used just like a credit card at any store that accepts SNAP. Texas Health and Human Services administers the federal program throughout the state. About the School Meal Programs The federally funded School Meal Programs include the School Breakfast Program (SBP) and National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The School Meal Programs serve over 5 million meals a day to Texas children in school and residential child care institutions. The School Meal Programs serve nutritious, low-cost or free meals to students in public and non-profit private schools in Texas. Meals must meet federal nutrition guidelines. The Texas Department of Agriculture administers SBP and NSLP in Texas.

"Despite this crisis, the one thing that never changes is that children need to eat," said Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, "And the Texas Department of Agriculture has been working hard with our federal, state and community partners to make sure no child goes hungry because of this pandemic. Not only will these benefits give these kids and their families a little help with the food bill, I hope it gives them a little hope in a dark time." After The Darkness, Then Comes The Light, And So We Wait Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

We could liken this pandemic to the one which swept through the world in 1917 – 18. It was the Spanish flu. Most of us missed that. At that time, we had no airplanes, autos or truck traffic like we have now. Stores, also, were very few and located in fewer big cities. Nevertheless, that flu is remembered as a dark and trying time for our small nation. However, there were

always strong men and women of courage who brought us through those trying times. God helped stir many hearts to overcome dire circumstances. We made it through and continued to build a stronger economy with God’s help. I’m reminded of this one short verse in Psalm 121: “I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. (verses 1 – 2.) The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The

Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever.” (verses 7 – 8.). These verses so speak to how there are times in life when we seem to be in a war. The whole word, today, appears to be in the grip of darkness. It is. But not to worry. We have faced wars before, and we made it through. We will acknowledge many men and women who have put their lives on the line for the sick ones. The enemy never changes. He must forget we have the Lord of the whole universe (!) to bring us out

of this bondage we face. After all, didn’t our God deliver all the Israelites out of Egypt? And didn’t He bring them forth into their homeland, Israel? And hasn’t He brought us through other wars and diseases? We may say, “But this is different.” And we answer: “Yes, but we can all be equipped to fight this in a ‘spiritual’ way.” If we go to the book of Second Corinthians, we see that Paul tells the church: “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the

flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,…” Second Corinthians 10:3-5. We, as warrior, know that we fight spiritually with prayer, reading His word, and declaring the words in Corinthians to be true. Then, we wait, pray, and declare our victory over the enemy. As we

faithfully wait, we know God’s plans and His timing will come about as He leads us. Then, as we come out of this trial, our joy will overflow. I pray for each of you, these beautiful and strong words coming from Paul in Ephesians: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.” Ephesians 1: 18 – 19a.

Mobile Market at the YMCA May 23 Even though the doors of the YMCAs are closed during these difficult times of COVID-19, our hearts are open and our legacy of service continues to meet the needs of the community, demonstrating the Y always has been and continues being more than just a gym. As the Y responds to the changing needs of our community as a result of the impact of COVID-19 on our families, we are collaborating with organizations across Greater Houston and surrounding communities to address food insecurity. Many across the metro area lack access and resources for food. Distribution sites fill a critical need for so many: children who depend on school provided meals, elderly p eo p le, p eo p le w ith diverse abilities, immigrants and refugees who rely on social services, and our neighbors who have a reduced or limited household income. Locally, Montgomery County Food Bank distributes food to more than 30,000 individuals a month in Montgomery

County. They do this in partnership with more than 60 partner agencies including the YMCA. T h e Wo o d l a n d s Family YMCA will host a mobile market in the Shadowbend YMCA parking lot on Saturday, May 23, starting around 9am. Located at 6145 Shadowbend Place in The Woodlands, patrons will drive thru each station, never leaving their vehicles. Boxes of food will be loaded into their cars by volunteers and Y Staff. Each family could receive an assortment of fresh produce, dry/canned goods, frozen meat, breads/desserts etc . . . based on availability. Distribution of food will be on a first come, first serve basis with enough food to serve 300 families, starting around 9am. Signage will be available to help with t r a f f i c f l o w. S o c i a l distancing guidelines will be strictly enforced. As a non-profit organization, the Y depends on community support to continue to support those in need. For those who are YMCA members, we ask that

you continue to support our work through your membership. Collectively, The YMCA of Greater Houston has served over 110,000 individuals through our Produce Distribution Sites. Produce is provided by our partnership with Brighter Bites and Houston Food Bank. Together, we are able to

fill a critical need for so many: children who depend on school provided meals, elderly p eo p le, p eo p le w ith diverse abilities, immigrants and refugees who rely on social services, and our neighbors who have a reduced or limited household income. The YMCA has partnered with the Houston Food

Bank, Montgomery County Food Bank and other partners to provide critical food and supplies to thousands of families at 5 Opportunity Centers and numerous distribution sites throughout the city. If you are an individual or organization that would like to partner with the Y to support these efforts, please email

Federal Agency Again Honors Texas A&M System for Success in Protecting U.S. Secrets, Technology Award comes as foreign agents seek to steal COVID-19-releated research C O L L E G E S T ATION, Texas — The Texas A&M University System is in a class by itself in terms of protecting sensitive information from foreign agents who want to steal it. For the second time in three years, the Texas A&M System won the D e f e n s e Counterintelligence & Security Agency Award for Excellence in Counterintelligence. The award is given for work to protect sensitive information from foreign spies. The System holds the distinction of being the only higher education institution to win the

award more than once. John Sharp, chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, said protecting research is vital nowadays, especially given a May 13 warning by the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency that COVIDrelated research likely is being targeted by the People’s Republic of China. “ T h e Te x a s A & M University System m a k e s counterintelligence a priority,” Sharp said. “We intend to be a leader in protecting national interests and the sensitive

work the Texas A&M System does in service to our country.” T h e Te x a s A & M System is one of five entities to receive the prestigious award from t h e D e f e n s e Counterintelligence and Security Agency in 2019. It is the highest honor given by the U.S. Government in this category. More than 10,000 corporate and academic organizations were in the running. The agency, which is part of the U.S. Department of Defense, began giving the annual award in 2010 to recognize cleared contractors that

T h e Te x a s A & M University System conducts approximately $400 million in sensitive research for a variety of U.S. government sponsors. Officials with the D e f e n s e Counterintelligence and Security Agency highlighted work of Dr. Kevin Gamache, the chief research security officer for The Texas A&M University System. They described Gamache as an expert who can provide firsthand insight into threats to American universities as well as how to fight those dangers. The agency specifically offered praise for a briefing called “National Security in the 21st

DCSA officials also recognized the Texas A&M System’s Office of Federal Relations in Washington, D.C. for working with Sen. John Cornyn’s office to draft language in the 2019 John S. The legislation includes the roadmap to address the threat to federally funded research at U.S. universities. “ Te x a s A & M ’s investments in counterintelligence and secure computing keep Americans safe and help us stay on the cutting edge,” said Sen. Sheltering in Place in a Wide-Open Space TALT News For some Texans, recent shelter-in-place orders have led to an exodus from the city back to family land in rural areas. TA LT C E O B l a i r Fitzsimons has heard numerous stories from her extended network about how Texas families have strengthened their connections to each other and to their land, as a result of COVID-19. “The hopeful thing I have heard from many folks is what a blessing it is to have the heritage of family land to fall back on in these distressing times,” she said. “Many families have re-connected in ways that wouldn’t have been possible before now, and their children’s commitment to their family heritage has deepened, too.” James Oliver’s COVID19 experience is a case in point. world began to shut down. The two of them quarantined in College Station, and then a hunting camp at the ranch. His younger son, Warren, was at a lake house with three family friends, and all four of the younger boys came to the ranch to wait it out. Once school was back in session, all the boys had school assignments to complete every week. Even more lessons were learned in the pastures and pens at the ranch. “I’ve put them all to

work, because there is always work to be done on a ranch,” said James. “I’ve had them building pens, lining out fence lines, putting up concrete and steel posts and teaching them how to cut and fit pipe. Plus, all of our stock work. Today, for example, they had school, but we had some sheep that we needed to ship, and that’s what we did as soon as the schoolwork was finished.” James is proud to see how his sons have taken on responsibility for the ranch

that has been in the family since 1882, and he knows their connection to the family land is stronger than ever. A few of the friends had never done any ranch work before, and James has seen them all rise to the challenge. “Seeing all of their confidence grow these last few weeks has been gratifying,” said James. “I hope they will all remember this time on the ranch for the rest of their lives.”
