Texas Woodforest National Bank Weekly Hosted a Grand Opening Gas Prices (May 23, 2022) - Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 13.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.27/g today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 50.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.52/g higher than a year ago. The price of diesel has risen 22.6 cents nationally in the past week and stands at $5.518 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $3.37/g yesterday while the most expensive was $5.20/g, a difference of $1.83/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $3.37/g while the highest was $5.20/g, a difference of $1.83/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 11.0 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.57/g today. The national average is up 45.4 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.55/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: May 23, 2021: $2.75/g (U.S. Average: $3.02/g) May 23, 2020: $1.63/g (U.S. Average: $1.96/g) May 23, 2019: $2.54/g (U.S. Average: $2.85/g) May 23, 2018: $2.73/g (U.S. Average: $2.97/g) May 23, 2017: $2.17/g (U.S. Average: $2.36/g) May 23, 2016: $2.06/g (U.S. Average: $2.28/g) May 23, 2015: $2.51/g (U.S. Average: $2.74/g) May 23, 2014: $3.44/g (U.S. Average: $3.66/g) May 23, 2013: $3.42/g (U.S. Average: $3.66/g) May 23, 2012: $3.50/g (U.S. Average: $3.68/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $4.20/g, up 1.5 cents per gallon from last week's $4.18/g. San Antonio- $4.26/g, up 22.5 cents per gallon from last week's $4.03/g. Austin- $4.28/g, up 17.0 cents per gallon from last week's $4.11/g. “Gasoline prices surged over the last week to new record highs, but have finally started to slow their rise with diesel also finally cooling off," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "With more Americans planning to hit the road for Memorial Day this year compared to last, prices will be over $1.50 per gallon higher than last year. Though, prices are appearing to slow down, for now. While the coast isn't clear yet, and prices will be at their highest Memorial Day level ever, I'm hopeful that we could avoid a dreaded national average of $5 per gallon this year. Whether or not we're able to depends on Americans cutting demand in the face of sky high prices." SOURCE GasBuddy

Montgomery County Assault of a Police Officer Friday, May 20, 2022 at approximately 10:56 am, a Deputy with the Precinct 1 Constable Office conducted a traffic stop on IH 45 just north of FM 830. Upon approaching the vehicle and making verbal contact with the driver; the d e p u t y, i m m e d i a t e l y developed probable cause and asked the driver to step out of the vehicle. The deputy further learned that the driver was an illegal who had been deported as an aggravated felon. At this time, a peace officer from t h e P a n o r a m a Vi l l a g e stopped to assist our deputy with this road side investigation. Officers then advised the driver/suspect that he was being detained. The driver then started actively resisting both officers and violent struggle ensued. The driver continued fighting with the officers into the median onto the feeder road; in an attempt to flee. During this struggle, several citizens stopped to help the officers gain control of the driver/suspect. The driver/suspect was detained and then started having a medical episode. Montgomery County Hospital District arrived on location to check the driver/suspect, who was then transported for medical evaluation. Both deputies were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The driver/suspect was later released from the hospital and taken to the Montgomery County Jail without incident. The driver/suspect was charged with two (2) counts of Assault on a Public Servant, third degree felony. Constable Cash wishes to thanks the citizens who stopped to help deputies gain control of this suspect. “We are fortunate to work in a community where the public respects, supports and helps the police”. “Since January 1 of this year, 107 police officers have lost their lives providing law enforce services throughout the nation”. Constable Cash further thanks our area partners (Panorama Police Department, Conroe Fire and Montgomery County Hospital District and Precinct 2 Constable’s Office) for their assistance in getting a violent felon off our streets. Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Food for Thought Diana Anderson

DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com

With temperatures rising fast making a heavy dinner is losing appeal. Something chilled seems just right but giving up substance may not be what you have in mind either. I started thinking about salads in the south and how different that tradition is from leafy greens served with croutons. I think they originated in part due to southern heat that remains into evening and because of the love of deserts, bread and casseroles. For some reason, we Southerners just love mixing a whole mess of foods into a single dish. Casseroles are a special kind of comfort food, and we can never have too many at a family gathering. We do the same with salads: The more we put in, the better it tastes. And anything goes. Incorporating two mainstays of the Southern diet – chicken and ricethis salad is an example of the delicious home cooking that grew out of the necessity of using every bit of food. From the 1920’s on, rice salads also went in a sweet direction, but this recipe keeps things light and savory, pairing basmati rice with vegetables and rotisserie chicken. Herbs and bright lemon dressing give it vivid colors and a fresh taste.

Lost Salads of the South * ½ cup loosely packed fresh tender herbs (such as dill, parsley, and chives), plus more for garnish * ¼ cup plus 2 Tbsp. olive oil * ¼ cup fresh lemon juice (from 2 large lemons) * 2 tablespoons chopped shallot (from 1 small shallot) * ½ tablespoon Dijon mustard * 2 teaspoons honey * ½ teaspoon kosher salt * ¼ teaspoon black pepper * 2?½ cups shredded rotisserie chicken breast (from 1 chicken) * 2 cups halved multicolored cherry tomatoes (from 1 [12-oz.] pkg.) * 1?¼ cups (¼-inch) diagonally sliced Persian or mini cucumbers (about 3 cucumbers) * 1 cup sliced almonds, toasted * 4 ounces feta cheese, crumbled (about 1 cup) * ½ cup (¼-inch) sliced celery (from 1 large celery stalk) * ¼ cup coarsely chopped celery leaves * ¼ cup coarsely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Directions

Cook rice according to package directions; transfer to a large bowl, and cool completely, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, place herbs, olive oil, lemon juice, shallot, mustard, honey, salt, and pepper in Herbed Chicken and a f o o d p r o c e s s o r o r Rice Salad blender; process until smooth, about 30 Ingredients seconds. To make the salad: In a large saucepan, bring 3 cups water to a boil. Add the black-eyed peas and return to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the peas are tender but still hold their shape, 20 to 25 minutes. Drain and let cool completely. In a large bowl, combine the cooled, cooked peas, with the bacon, onion, bell pepper, * ½ teaspoon Salt parsley, scallions, celery * ¼ teaspoon Black and jalapeño. Weekly Columns

Why Contribute to a Roth IRA? A weekly column by Kent Pendleton Consider the benefits and limits associated with making post-tax contributions to an individual retirement account. The key benefits of Roth IRAs include: All distributions from the account can be tax free. Although contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax deductible, earnings grow free of taxes. When you reach age 59 1/2, if the Roth IRA has been in place for at least 5 years, any withdrawal from the contributions and earnings is tax free. Avoiding the tax bite at the time of withdrawal in retirement can be attractive – particularly for investors who anticipate having a

higher marginal income tax rate at the time of withdrawal than they do at the time of contribution. No required minimum distributions. While distributions from a traditional IRA must begin upon reaching age 72, there are no similar requirements for a Roth IRA. No age limit on contributions. You can continue contributing to your IRA – Roth or traditional – as long as you have earned income. Withdrawals may be made without penalty for a first-time home purchase. As with a traditional IRA, you can withdraw funds from your Roth IRA (up to a lifetime maximum of $10,000) to make a down payment on a first-time home purchase. A first-time

homebuyer is defined as someone who has not owned a home for 2 years prior to the purchase of the new home. Roth IRA * Contribute after-tax dollars * Wi t h d r a w a l s i n retirement are tax-free * No required minimum distributions * Income limits apply Traditional IRA * Contribute pre-tax dollars * Wi t h d r a w a l s i n retirement are taxable * Required minimum distributions at age 72 * No income limits In 2022, an individual may contribute up to $6,000 to their IRAs – $7,000 if they are 50 years of age or older. Keep in mind that modified

adjusted growth income (MAGI) phase-out limits apply. Single filer or head of household: The full Roth contribution limit is available to individuals filing as single or head of household with a MAGI of less than $129,000. The amount is phased out for MAGIs between $129,000 and $144,000. Married filing jointly: The full Roth contribution limit is available to married individuals filing joint returns with MAGIs of less than $204,000. The amount is phased out for MAGIs between $204,000 and $214,000. Married filing separately: If you have not lived with your spouse at any point during the year and file separately, MAGI limits mirror those for

single filers and heads of household. If you lived with your spouse at any time during the year and file separately, no Roth contribution is allowed unless MAGI is less than $10,000. If you would like to know more about IRAs, please give us a call. We can answer any questions you may have about the features and benefits of IRAs and help determine which type may be appropriate for addressing your retirement needs. MASKED BANDITS IN YOUR ATTIC? By Cheryl Conley You’re sitting in your recliner watching TV and you hear noises in your attic or walls. What could it be? What do I do? First of all, don’t panic. Chances are you’re dealing with critters and there are humane ways to get rid of these freeloaders. For this article, let’s talk about raccoons which seems to be the biggest problem this time of the year. The first thing you need to do is walk around your house and find out where the entry point is. The entry point is usually an unsecured grate, a hole in your siding or a small gap in a vent. Look for shredded paper or insulation on the ground around your home. This may help you find where they’re getting in. Raccoons are very opportunistic and if there’s a way to get in, they’ll find it. By identifying the entry point, you’ll know what you need to repair once they’re gone. Make sure you get the critters out before you do any repairs. Why have they taken up residence in your attic? They are not evil animals, they’re not there to cause you aggravation. During spring, pregnant raccoons are looking for a protected place to give birth. What good mother

wouldn’t do the same? Normally they will nest in a hollow tree trunk, cave or crevice but if they happen to find a way into your attic, the pregnant raccoon will temporarily move in. My suggested solution to ridding your property of a mother raccoon and her babies is to do nothing. Yes, I said it—do nothing. When the babies are old enough, mother and babies will leave on their own. Be patient. It will take a few weeks. Now you need to repair the entry point or this will be a problem again in the future. If you can’t tolerate the thought of wild animals in your attic, there are some things you can do to encourage them to leave. These are very humane solutions and I highly recommend them. * Mama raccoon is in your attic because it’s a dark and quiet place for her and her babies. So, make it light and noisy! Making sure it’s not a fire hazard, place a high wattage light in the attic. You can also try using a spotlight at the entry point if you know where that is. Now, place a radio in the attic tuned to a talk radio station. Music doesn’t seem to bother raccoons but the sound of

human voices has more of an effect. Play it LOUD. This may bother you for a day or two but you have to be persistent for this to work. * Smells. Depending on what website you’re looking at, you’ll find several suggestions on smells that will encourage raccoons to move out. One site suggests soaking rags in ammonia or apple cider vinegar, putting them in plastic bags with holes punched in the bag and placing them in the attic. Other sites suggest putting cotton balls soaked with peppermint oil in the attic. You can purchase something called raccoon eviction fluid but I can’t vouch for its effectiveness. One site I looked at suggested an ultrasonic sound emitter. It emits a high frequency noise that only they can hear. Again, sounds good but does it work? I don’t know. I must emphasize, once again, to be patient! These tactics can take several days to work. Now, what NOT to do. Do not set up a live trap. Raccoons can be dangerous especially if you are dealing with a mama. It’s inhumane as well. When I worked at one of the wildlife centers in Houston, we heard horror

stories about mama raccoons chewing off their own limbs to try to escape the trap and get to her babies. Trapping the mom and leaving the babies doesn’t solve your problem. If you trap Mom, you now have orphans that need to be taken to a wildlife center. Remember, too, that Texas Department of State Health Services states that it is illegal for a person to transport animals such as fox, skunk, coyote or raccoon within Texas so you can’t relocate the trapped female raccoon or the babies. Please note that relocated raccoons will have to fight with

established raccoons for survival in the new territory. For those of you that think trapping and relocating animals will help rid your property of critters, relocating them solves nothing. New ones will move in when one leaves. There are many exterminating companies out there that claim to be h u m a n e . B E V E RY CAREFUL if you decide to hire one. Ask questions about what they do with the animals. Many of them kill the animals. At this time of the year, please try to refrain from cutting down trees. Many trees are home to spring babies including birds,

squirrels and raccoons. If you find yourself with animals needing help, contact a wildlife center or rehabilitator. Do not try to care for the animal yourself! attention to other drivers and buckling your seat belt, we can all do our part to make the roads as safe as possible and enjoy the long Memorial Day holiday.” During the 2021 Memorial Day campaign, Troopers issued more than 115,700 citations and warnings. This includes 6,513 citations for speeding; 1,860 for no insurance; and more than 1,200 citations for individuals without seat belt or child seat restraints. DPS also arrested 445 people on DWI charges, 333 fugitives and 667 people for other felony charges. DPS encourages drivers to follow these safety tips during Memorial Day weekend and beyond: * Don’t drink and drive. Make alternate plans if you

are consuming alcohol. * Move Over or Slow Down for police, fire, EMS, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated. Show the same courtesy to fellow drivers who are stopped on the side of the road. So far in 2022, there have been 3,423 violations. * Buckle up everyone in the vehicle — it’s the law. * Slow down, especially in bad weather, heavy traffic, unfamiliar areas or construction zones. * Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices. Texas law prohibits the use of portable wireless devices to read, write or send an electronic message unless the vehicle is stopped. If you’re using a navigation device or app, have a passenger operate it

so you can keep your eyes on the road. * Drive defensively, as holiday travel can present additional challenges. * On multi-lane roads, use the left lane for passing only. Not only is it courteous driving and avoids impeding traffic, Texas law requires slower traffic to keep to the right and to use the left lane for passing only (when posted). * Don’t cut in front of large trucks and try not to brake quickly in front of them. They can’t maneuver as easily as passenger vehicles and pickup trucks. * If you can Steer It, Clear It: If you are involved in a non-injury crash and your vehicle can be moved, clear the traffic lanes to minimize traffic impact. Leaving vehicles in a traffic lane increases traffic congestion and leaves those involved with

an increased risk of harm or a secondary wreck. On some highways, if you don’t move your vehicle when it’s safe to do so, it’s against the law. * Keep the Texas Roadside Assistance number stored in your phone. Dial 1-800-5255555 for any type of assistance. The number can also be found on the back of a Texas Driver License. * Check your vehicle to make sure it is properly maintained and always ensure your cargo is secure. * Report road hazards or anything suspicious to the nearest law enforcement agency. * Monitor weather and road conditions wherever you are traveling. The JBSOC is activated to its highest alert level as the Biden Administration has estimated that the end of Title 42 expulsions will lead to up to 18,000 illegal crossings per day from Mexico into the United States. "Texas will not stand by as President Biden puts our state and our nation in danger by ending Title 42 expulsions and allowing dangerous criminals, illegal weapons, and deadly drugs like fentanyl to flow unabated into the United States, and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis at our

southern border," said Governor Abbott. "We continue taking unprecedented action to secure the border, ramping up every available strategy and resource in response to President Biden's ongoing border crisis. The Joint Border Security Operations Center will play an integral role in our state's robust response to provide the border security strategy Texans — and Americans — deserve." The JBSOC, located at DPS headquarters in Austin, will serve as the state's multi-agency command and coordination center for statewide border security intelligence and operations to include tactical, marine, air, and ground. It will also coordinate the deployment of strategic barriers along the Texas-Mexico border, including razor wire. Live feeds from Texas National Guard and DPS aircraft, UAVs, and detection cameras will provide around-the-clock s i t u a t i o n a l awareness. The JBSOC will have direct contact with law enforcement and local leaders along the Texas-Mexico border. Pursuant to the disaster declaration issued last year and his authority to respond to disasters under state law, Governor Abbott directed the

following state agencies to report to the JBSOC: Texas Department of Public Safety Te x a s M i l i t a r y Department Texas Division of Emergency Management Texas Department of Transportation Te x a s F a c i l i t i e s Commission (TFC) Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Te x a s P a r k s a n d Wildlife Department (TPWD) Texas Commission on Jail Standards Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Te x a s H e a l t h a n d Human Services Commission Texas Fire Marshal’s Office Te x a s A t t o r n e y General’s Office Texas Indigent Defense Commission Border Prosecution Unit Office of Court Administration Governor Abbott has taken significant action to secure the border in the wake of the federal government’s inaction. Those actions include: * Securing $4 billion in funding for Texas' border security efforts * Launching Operation Lone Star and deploying thousands of National Guard soldiers and Texas Department of Public

Safety troopers * Arresting and jailing illegal migrants trespassing or committing other state crimes in Texas * Allocating resources that include acquiring 1,700 unused steel panels to build the border wall in Texas * Signing a law to make it easier to prosecute smugglers bringing people into Texas * Signing 15 laws cracking down on human trafficking in Texas * Signing a law enhancing penalties for the manufacturing and distribution of fentanyl * Issuing a disaster declaration for the border crisis * Issuing an executive order preventing nongovernmental entities from transporting illegal immigrants * Taking legal action to enforce the Remain in Mexico policy * Taking aggressive action to secure the border as President Biden ends Title 42 expulsions, including busing migrants to Washington, D.C. * Signing memoranda of understanding between the State of Texas and the States of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, a n d Ta m a u l i p a s t o enhance border security measures that will prevent illegal immigration from Mexico to Texas

Devotional Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

It is no secret that “hard times” have come to us as a nation. I know in World War II, my own family members gave my mother their “shoe coupons” so I would have shoes that fit me as I grew older. Hardly anyone had enough money for shoes then. I pray those times won’t be repeated. In the past few weeks, we have all heard of things which make us very sad – such as the loss of baby formula for the newborns. Then the prices of gasoline Then the price of gasoline

WHEN HARD TIMES COME REMEMBER WHO IS IN CONTROL going up which keeps truck deliveries short of food to our stores. It seems as though many shortages may not be re-supplied for a long while. However, we who love the Lord know He will never leave us or forsake us. He sees that we continue to love and care for the small and the a g e d o n e s . We a l l sacrifice for their wellbeing. How do I know that? Read this one part of scripture from D a v i d ’s b e a u t i f u l Psalm 91: “Because he has loved Me,

bring understanding and peace once again with God’s help and good leadership. There are many people returning to churches and having prayer g r o u p s o n c e more…from California to New York. I truly believe God is true to His word and will never leave us nor forsake us. Our Bible is full of scriptures that pertain to our present situation. Also, many pastors may preach to inform us of hard times to come. However, only the LORD knows

the end-time events which may or may not occur in our lifetime. So…what do we do? We trust God and read His word. We train our children well to know Jesus and always help our neighbors. We pray for God’s mercy and keep Him close as we minister love to those around us. We spread His word to the lost and dying world of people who don’t know our beautiful Savior. And all need to remember that God is in control at all times.

Community When Calls A Mother’s Heart Luncheon The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Improvement Organization sponsored a celebratory luncheon honoring these distinctive women of Montgomery, Dobbin, and other surrounding areas. In the face of undue hardships, these “Hidden Treasures,” who are over the age of seventy-five (75); have contributed in innumerable ways to our character, personalities, and development as productive and industrious citizens. A festive atmosphere was created, along with a tasteful menu, Gospel singing, inspira-

tional words, gift bags, and flowers were given to each honoree at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The only thing that was enjoyed more, was the great big smiles that were shared and heaped upon from the support staff and sponsors. These “Hidden Tr e a s u r e s ” a r e n o t recorded in our history books, but they are imprinted upon our hearts, so we honor their legacies by embracing and incorporating the valuable lessons learned from their lives and (Pictured L to R): Erma Goosby, Stella McGinnis, Betty Hatchett, Dorothy Holts, Zenolia Ratcliff, Dorthy Scott, legacies as We Call unto Ruth Morgan, Willie Johnson; (Standing: T.J. Members From The Thomas Jefferson Stubbs 2523 Conroe Chapter Attend Tea In Beaumont, Texas a year and they do enjoy catching up. On Saturday, May 14, 2022, five members of the Thomas Jefferson Stubbs 2523, Conroe chapter of the Texas Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy, attended a tea for an early celebration of the upcoming birthday of Jefferson F. Davis, the only President of the Confederacy.. The event was hosted by the Dick Dowling 404 Beaumont chapter, Texas Division, UDC. The Dick Dowling chapter has a lot of rich h i s t o r y, t h e y w e r e chartered in 1900 and on September 8 of this year, will celebrate their 122th anniversary. The chapter

was named after an Irishman, Richard W. Dowling, from Tuam, Ireland. Major Dowling and 47 men with Co. F, 1st Texas Heavy Artillery Regiment, fought and defeated a flotilla of 5,000 Union soldiers, at the 2nd Battle of Sabine Pass in 1863. Emily Allen, president of the Dick Dowling chapter, greeted every one and thanked all them for attending. The Stubbs members who attended the tea, were met with friendly smiles and pleasant conversations. Both chapters are in District III but the ladies usually only see each other a few times

tables with delicious finger sandwiches and desserts and piping hot tea pots were on each table. Fresh cut floral arrangements were in the center of each table which added to the ambience of a tea. One member hand made a charcuterie tray, which was topped with meats, cheeses, fruits and breads,

the wood burned tray was quiet lovely. At the event, member Bernice Elgar read a poem titled "Jefferson Davis" which she had written. Also, two perspective members had their paperwork signed and they will be #5 & #6 of African American descent to join the Dick Dowling

chapter. There were about 25 ladies attending the tea. The tea was held at the Howell Furniture Store on Folsom Dr. in Beaumont, they have a room available for community events. Submitted by Eva Rains, Thomas Jefferson Stubbs 2523, Conroe chapter member

Community The United States Daughters Of 1812, Thomas Bay Chapter Celebrate and Install New Officers For The 2022-2024 Term

Rebel from page 1 the Hearth in the Outdoor Kitchen Cabin, for the RJOA! President JENNY is shown here holding the warm delicious CornBread that they all later had a taste of at lunch, at the Restaur a n t , S a m ’s Ta b l e , t o complete the purpose of the Day! The white Woodland Houston Home is in the Background, and also held many interesting facts about Sam Houston and his children. The Park has now closed off the SteamBoat House and the Woodland Home from entering, as once allowed, and the RJOA were fortunate that one of their members who had visited inside the rooms in the Past, before they were closed from entry. RJOA member, ELAINE COLLINGS. was able to describe more of the feelings she had when she was in those rooms. The Museum Management has now created windows for viewing inside, and all is air conditioned to preserve the antique

contents. The Steam Boat House is such an interesting structure and was built by Dr. Rufus Bailey, in the 1850’s, before the War between the States. The feelings of the upcoming war had been in the air for years, and Texas was faced with many challenges from Mexico, Indians, Marauders, and a way to make a living on this vast great land of Texas! TEXAS WAS A CONFEDERATE S TAT E F R O M T H E BEGINNING, and Governor Sam Houston had to give up his Title when he chose not to side with Texas and the Confederacy. He had a very rough life after that and was shunned by townspeople and many past admirers. He found it very difficult to make a living after that, and still sustained wounds from past battles in his life. Sam Houston Sr died in the SteamBoat House in 1863, in the middle of the War Between the States. Of course the House was built to resemble the front of a SteamBoat, and is quite unusual for an entrance! His Funeral was conducted in their upstairs Parlor. The house was moved to the Museum complex from its original site, and restored in 1936.

At the Bear Bend Hunting Lodge, the Rebel Joan Of Arc ladies, were treated to a demonstration of the loading and firing of a Black Powder Musket, which scared the Ducks and Geese! The Chapter ladies shared their own stories with the Docent, and told about their Drawing they are holding June 3rd, for their “Commemorative Jefferson Finis Davis 1862 CS Richmond Black Powder Musket”! Tickets can still be purchased from the Rebel Joan Of Arc Chapter Members, until June 3rd, the night of the Drawing on the Birthday of President Jefferson Davis, CSA. C O N F E D E R AT E HISTORY CONTINUES: The RJOA Ladies were eager to get to the Museum and learn more about the Confederate Son of Sam Houston, Sam Houston Jr! Sam Junior did not share the same beliefs as his Father, about Texas Seceding and joining the War Between the States. Sam Junior felt that Texas had to take her stand against the Yankee invaders, a n d t h a t Te x a s s h o u l d Secede along with its Southern neighbors for Independence and Sates Rights, as most of Texas did. In 1861 Sam Houston

Junior enlisted as a Private in Company C, 2nd Texas Infantry. Sam Houston Senior had requested an Officers Appointment for his son, but Sam Junior refused it, as he did not want special treatment. Sam Houston Jr, was transferred to Mississippi in 1862. In at Battle at Pittsburg Landing, Sam Junior was saved from serious injury when a bullet lodged in the Bible he was carrying, that was given to him by his adoring Mother, Margaret Houston. The very next day he was seriously wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, treated in a Hospital in St. Louis, and sent to a Prisoner of War Camp. Later he was a part of a prisoner exchange. Sam Junior then went to Mexico with his Uncle on a trading expedition, and returned to Huntsville to see his family, who desperately needed him, but he reenlisted in the Confederate Army! He fought in Louisiana with the Artillery Battery. He was a Poetic young man and did sketches of the Battles, but fought with courage and fearless charges at the front of the lines! He later admitted to his mother that he was ashamed at leaving them when they needed him so

Members of the United State Daughters of 1812, Thomas Bay Chapter, met at the Carriage Inn in Conroe, to celebrate the chapter’s achievements, welcome new members, and install new officers during their May meeting. Members thanked Karen Hall for serving four years as President and her Board of Officers: Carol Hicks (First Vice President); Mollie Weber (Chaplain); Judy Weidner (Secretary); Cheryl “Sissie” Kipp (Treasurer); Gail Utley (Registrar); Pat Spackey (Historian); Wendy Hicks (Librarian) and Lady Dalton (Parliamentarian).

Jennifer Lundberg, U.S.D. 1812 State officer, installed the new board of officers: Liddie Henderson (President); Karen Hall (Vice President); Tammy Mouliere (Chaplain); Lady Dalton (Treasurer); Judy Weidner (Secretary); Carolyn Collmorgen (Registrar); Pat Spackey (Historian); Mollie Weber (Librarian); and Sue Hereford (Parliamentarian). desperately, but the draw of the Battles and the desire to keep the Houston Name Honorable overwhelmed him. He served very admirably according to his Commanders. He later became a Doctor, but never practiced. His professions took a different turn after the War. Sam Junior was the 1st Born of the seven siblings and went to war in his late teens. He served honorably his full time in the Confederacy, and even reenlisted after he was honorably discharged. His Father died in the SteamBoat House when Sam Junior was only twenty years old, and leaving Sam Junior to be the provider for his family and try to repair the reputation of the

Houston Name. The burdens and responsibilities must have been overwhelming and he struggled all his life to try to bring honor to their name. In Waco, he is later listed as an Editor. He also worked as a reporter for the New Birmingham Times. A book of his poetry and short stories was published in 1892. He dies in 1894 at his sisters residence, Maggie Williams, in Independence, Texas, where his Mother is also buried. His gravestone reads: Dr Sam Houston, Jr. What a Confederate Education these ladies researched and received for this Famous Texas Family in our area. Time is healing wounds, but true History is never to be changed or erased, for “IT IS OUR HISTORY IN TEXAS”.
