In a feat unequaled in Montgomery County history, a major restaurant that was flooded out early in a month, has been reopened in working order looking no worse for wear before the end of the same month. Actually, it was a dayoverthreeweeksoutof day action. Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish,locatedat5901W Davis, in Conroe was f l o o d e d w i t h approximately17inchesof water throughout the restaurant on May 2nd. A ‘rain bomb,’ an extreme amount of rain that fell in Lake Conroe’s watershed in a short period of time, caused the forced release of water from the Lake C o n r o e D a m overwhelming the West Fork of the San Jacinto River The flooding affected the low-lying woods, andapproachedthe catfish restaurant from the backsideoftheproperty It was the second time Vernon’shadfloodedsince HurricaneHarveyin2017. Kuntry Katfish, which hadanticipatedonopening last Saturday the 25th, announced earlier that week that the repairs were happening much faster than anticipated That prompted the restaurant's Facebook post on May 20th that the restaurant wouldbeopenforbusiness for the Friday lunch service.

Caring for Dogs with Special Needs
BRYAN-COLLEGE
STATION Specialneeds dogs exist on a spectrum that may include
those with physical impairments such as missing, deformed, or paralyzedlimbs;blindness; or deafness with behavioral issues such as separation anxiety or situational fears or with medical diagnoses like chronic illnesses, diabetes, orallergies.
While incredibly rewarding companions dogs with special needs require a level of commitment and understanding that differs from caring for otherpets.
Before welcoming a special-needs dog into a home,Dr RachelMelvin,a surgery intern at the Texas A&MSchoolofVeterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, offers insights that prospective owners should know before fostering or adopting so theyarewell-informedand prepared for the responsibilitiesahead.

Does your current lifestyle fit with the dog’s
Dogs with special needsarealotofwork, and peoplereallyneedtoknow what they’re signing up for,” Melvin said “One thingyoushouldbesureof isthatyourcurrentlifestyle fitswiththatspecificdog’s needs, becauseyou’remore likely to succeed if what you already do every day works for them versus having to change your entirelife.
For example if you worklonghoursawayfrom home, it will be more challenging to care for a dog that needs frequent potty breaks,” she shared. “Also, if your home is known to have toys out in different places each day, then a dog that is blind or usesawheelchairwillhave troublenavigatingthedaily changes in their path Personally, I don’t have a good setup for giving dogs baths, so it would be hard formetocareforadogthat requires additional skin care.”
In addition to ensuring your lifestyle meets the physical space demands of a pet’s needs, Melvin said it’s also important to addressquestionsaboutthe dog’s medical requirements including ongoing treatments, medications,
“If someone is going to care for a special-needs dog, they should ask whether the condition can be comfortably managed bytheirgeneralpractitioner or if a specialist or behaviorist will be required,” Melvin explained. “Additionally, how often are medical care and rechecks needed? It’s really importantthatownersunderstand the frequency of getting checkups to manage the condition and make sure nothingprogresses.”
Financial implications of caring for a specialneeds dog also should be considered, as medical requirementscanbecostly This can help owners ensuretheyarepreparedto provide the necessary care without placing undue strainontheirfinances.
“Potential owners need to havean ideaof what the long-term cost could be particularly if the animal’s conditionweretoworsenin the future,” Melvin said “Askingrelevantquestions can be useful, such as how likelyitisthatthecondition willprogress, whatitcould looklikeifitdoes, andwhat owners will need to do to supporttheanimal.”

ment for their animal to thrive and succeed For those considering caring foraspecial-needsdog,this can include providing necessary equipment or changes to the home that improvethepet’squalityof life.
“Owners might need to consider if the animal will require special food elevatedbowlsforfoodand water, and a designated area that is blocked off for them to eat and drink,” Melvin explained. “If the animal has urinary or fecal incontinence issues, what doesgoingpottylooklike? Itcouldmeanusingdiapers or simply cleaning up a designated area after they dotheirbusiness.
“Theymightalsobenefit from ramps; wide, wheelchaircompatiblepathways; or soft cushioning on corners,” Melvin continued “For those who are blind fences should be placed around stairs, especiallyifthedogiskept upstairs so they don’t accidentallyfall.”
For any pet with mobility issues, Melvin suggestsownersplaceyoga mats, carpet runners, or pieces of carpet on top of slicksurfaces, allowingthe dog to gain traction when getting up and moving around.
Enrichment, Quality of Life
org AprilSoundChurch
67½AprilWindS.,
Enrichment activities also are beneficial for a special-needs dog’s mental and physical well-being, butownersneedtoprepare for the time required for day-to-day care and activities.
“I once had a foster dog thatcouldn’twalkwell, and I was able to care for him rather easily until he got biggerandwantedtomove around more, which took more time and was harder formetomanageontopof our normal morning routine,”Melvinsaid.
Owners may need to consider if the dog needs a yardtowalkaroundinorif leashed walks will always work,”Melvinsaid.“Also, what kind of toys can they play with? Do they like snuggling? Do they like getting on the couch? All thesethingscanaffecthow they live their life, and the
goal is to make it easy for them.”
Fostering or adopting a special-needs dog can be immensely fulfilling, but it comes with its own set of challenges when preparing for the long-term commitment of providing a loving andsupportivehome. With the right knowledge and preparation owners can makeaprofounddifference in the lives of these dogs, giving them the care and lovetheydeserve.

Paul does not use his imperfectionsasanexcuse tostopgrowingspiritually When he talks about “pressingon”heborrowsa wordfromtheworldofthe hunter Theverbmeans“to pursue” something, as you might if you were hunting deer Inhispast,Paul’szeal drove him to pursue and huntdownChristians. Now he is running after Christ, so that he can come to knowJesusinadeeperway andwatchhimselfbecome less imperfect tomorrow thanheistoday
That happens to us, doesn’t it? The reality is thatwereallycannotforget our past entirely What we bury is not forgotten. It is being denied or repressed.
