Sandwich after sandwich, they weren t from a sandwich shop, but catered. Itcouldmeanusingdiapers or simply cleaning up a designated area after they dotheirbusiness.

“Theymightalsobenefit from ramps; wide, wheelchaircompatiblepathways; or soft cushioning on corners,” Melvin continued “For those who are blind fences should be placed around stairs, especiallyifthedogiskept upstairs so they don’t accidentallyfall.”

For any pet with mobility issues, Melvin suggestsownersplaceyoga mats, carpet runners, or pieces of carpet on top of slicksurfaces,allowingthe dog to gain traction when getting up and moving around.

“I once had a foster dog thatcouldn’twalkwell,and I was able to care for him rather easily until he got biggerandwantedtomove around more, which took more time and was harder formetomanageontopof our normal morning routine,”Melvinsaid.

Owners may need to consider if the dog needs a yardtowalkaroundinorif leashed walks will always work,”Melvinsaid.“Also, what kind of toys can they play with? Do they like snuggling? Do they like getting on the couch? All thesethingscanaffecthow they live their life, and the

goal is to make it easy for them.”

Fostering or adopting a special-needs dog can be immensely fulfilling, but it comes with its own set of challenges when preparing for the long-term commitment of providing a loving andsupportivehome.With the right knowledge and preparation owners can makeaprofounddifference in the lives of these dogs, giving them the care and lovetheydeserve.

This week’s Veteran is Randy Himes from Everett, PA, a small town inlower-midPennsylvania that is much like Montgomery. Himes was visiting a friend at The Lone Star Honor Flight Veterans Group in Conroe last Wednesday Randy served in the U.S. Army from 1976 - 2004, as a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical defense officer

ensuringsoldiersweresafe from respiratory concerns mostly Himes accidentally injected himself with Atropine, the Army’s Nerve Agent Treatment, during a demonstration, and he reported having ‘cotton mouth’ or dry mouth afterwards.
