Texas Angler of the Year Tournament Weekly Gas Prices (June 6, 2022) - Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 33.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $ 4 . 5 6 / g t o d a y, a c c o r d i n g t o GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 61.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.84/g higher than a year ago. The price of diesel has risen 11.5 cents nationally in the past week and stands at $5.62 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $3.99/g yesterday while the most expensive was $5.69/g, a difference of $1.70/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $3.99/g while the highest was $5.69/g, a difference of $1.70/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 26.0 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.85/g today. The national average is up 56.0 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.81/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: June 6, 2021: $2.71/g (U.S. Average: $3.04/g) June 6, 2020: $1.69/g (U.S. Average: $2.02/g) June 6, 2019: $2.46/g (U.S. Average: $2.77/g) June 6, 2018: $2.74/g (U.S. Average: $2.94/g) June 6, 2017: $2.17/g (U.S. Average: $2.36/g) June 6, 2016: $2.14/g (U.S. Average: $2.36/g) June 6, 2015: $2.55/g (U.S. Average: $2.76/g) June 6, 2014: $3.44/g (U.S. Average: $3.66/g) June 6, 2013: $3.36/g (U.S. Average: $3.63/g) June 6, 2012: $3.38/g (U.S. Average: $3.56/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $4.36/g, up 21.8 cents per gallon from last week's $4.14/g. San Antonio- $4.49/g, up 32.2 cents per gallon from last week's $4.17/g. Austin- $4.53/g, up 31.4 cents per gallon from last week's $4.21/g. “After a blistering week of gas prices jumping in nearly every town, city, state and area possible, more bad news is on the horizon. It now appears not if, but when, we'll hit that psychologically critical $5 national average," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "Gasoline inventories continue to decline even with demand softening due to high prices, a culmination of less refining capacity than we had prior to Covid and strong consumption, a situation that doesn't look to improve drastically anytime soon. Nine states have average gas prices that stand beyond the $5 per gallon mark, with more set to join in the days and weeks ahead. In addition, diesel prices also stand at a record high, a second gut-punch to consumers which pushes prices of most goods higher." SOURCE GasBuddy

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Food for Thought Diana Anderson

Ripe and luscious, strawberries are nature’s way of welcoming us back to another bountiful summer. Inspired by how good the strawberries have been this season I set out to make some legit recipes in which strawberries were the star instead of just leaving them in the fridge for snacks or the occasional topping. They include an hors d’oeuvre and a salad dressing, a baked good, a drink and a dessert. Ordinarily, I would save the dessert for last, but I want to tell you about it first because I am so excited about it. It is a restaurantquality dish that is also a bit of work, to be honest. But each part of the dish is easy to make, and you can do most of it the day before. And then, when you are ready to serve it, all you have left is to whip up a simple sauce. And then flambé it. Strawberry flambee Over Lemon Ricotta-Filled Crêpes is the kind of dessert that will make anyone who eats it smile. And all you must do is master three simple parts. First, you make the crepes, which are just a thin batter (flour, milk, eggs, melted butter) cooked briefly on a hot pan. Next, you stir together a filling for the crepes (ricotta cheese, sugar, vanilla and the zest of a lemon and an orange). Finally, you make a sauce by heating together strawberries, sugar, orange juice, butter, and Grand Marnier. When the alcohol is hot, light a match to it and watch the flames dance in delight. It should be impressive, but in the version, I made the flames were a little hard to see. It doesn’t matter. The taste was amazing. If you prefer your strawberry dishes to be fast and easy, I recommend using the fruit to make drinks. Hardly anything on earth is more refreshing. Strawberry agua fresca is just a sweetened strawberry-flavored water, and it is delightful. It doesn’t take long to make, but you do have to let it sit for a few hours. If you know it is going to be hot later in the day, or the next day, I can’t think of anything more cooling. It’s the sort of drink that will make you want to mow the grass in the hot sun just so you can come inside and drink a tall glass of it. I have a homemade salad dressing that I adore, but it would be a waste of the season in the spring and
Strawberries are the Star of the Season early summer not to make a dressing with strawberries. The one I made was bright and full of the flavor of strawberries. Along with the berries and olive oil — and salt and pepper, of course — it only requires the sweet-tart combination of honey and apple cider vinegar. The dressing tastes fresh and pure, and it is a superb way to use strawberries that are just a little overripe. Best of all, it comes together in a matter of minutes. You probably already k n o w h o w w e l l strawberries pair with balsamic vinegar; sometimes I just mix the two and serve it over vanilla ice cream for an unexpectedly elegant dessert. But they also can be combined for a notable hors d’oeuvre, especially when paired with creamy goat cheese and deliciously crisp charred bread. The secret to Strawberry Goat Cheese Bruschetta is that the balsamic vinegar is cooked until it is reduced by about half, which makes it extra good because it is syrupy and intense in flavor. The reduced vinegar is mixed with diced strawberries and spooned on top of tangy goat cheese, which has been spread on thin slices of grilled or broiled French or Italian bread. I used a grill pan for mine; it’s a skillet with raised lines that mimic the effect of a grill when cooking on a stove. A light sprinkling of fresh thyme leaves is all the bruschetta needs to tie the flavors together. My final dish is a baked good that is relatively low in calories. Healthy Strawberry Oatmeal Bars are made with butter, brown sugar, and whole wheat flour — along with oldfashioned rolled oats and strawberries — and yet they only have about 100 calories apiece. Until you add a vanilla glaze. The glaze is optional, but you’re going to want to add it. Yum. As The Tax Law Sunset Nears, Review Savvy Gifting Solutions A weekly column by Kent Pendleton Things to know before estate tax laws sunset in 2025. On January 1, 2018, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) added provisions to the tax code to reduce income tax burdens. Many, however, weren’t permanent. That’s why December 31, 2025, will be an important day, with 23 provisions scheduled to sunset. Significant provisions scheduled to expire include the reduction of individual income rates, the increased AMT exemption and phaseout threshold, and the increased standard deduction. Unless Congress acts, many people will see a tax hike. But for high-net-worth families, nothing is drawing attention like the possible end of the TCJA’s favorable estate tax changes. Specifically, the provision that increased
the estate and gift tax exemption from $5 million to $10 million (adjusted annually for inflation, it’s $12.06 million in 2022). If nothing happens on Capitol Hill, the exemption will return to pre-TCJA levels in 2026. Temporary clarification The estate and gift tax exemption is first used during your lifetime. The remaining amount, if any, is then used to reduce or eliminate federal estate tax. But what about gifts made between 2015 and 2018? Does their protection vanish in 2026? The IRS has proposed additional tax relief for families who could have a larger-thanexpected tax consequence as a result of large lifetime gifts made during this time frame. The proposals clarify that individuals who leverage the increased e x e m p t i o n w o n ’t b e affected after 2025.
Under a special rule, an estate can compute its tax using the larger exemption amount for gifts made during your lifetime or the exemption amount corresponding with the date of death. So if you make large gifts before 2026, you won’t lose the larger exemption’s benefit after sunset. But, of course, it helps to consult your tax professionals for definitive guidance. In the meantime… If your estate is likely to exceed $6 million per spouse, you might ask your advisors about: Below-market loans These loans, to children or a trust, use minimum interest rates published by the IRS and can shift wealth gift-tax-free from parent to child. Hypothetically, a parent could create a five-year interest-only loan at the current applicable federal rate (AFR) of
only 1.87% with all principal due at the end. If the child then successfully invests the funds, earning a higher percentage in gains, they could then pocket the difference without gift-tax consequences. Grantor retained annuity trusts A trust to which the donor transfers assets and retains a right to a series of fixed annual payments over a set term. To the extent the trust assets grow beyond the IRS monthly “hurdle rate,” (2.2% in April) there can be an effective wealth shift to the beneficiaries. Sales to intentionally defective grantor trusts The donor sets up a trust, gifts some assets and then sells other assets to that trust in exchange for a promissory note. Under current law, the grantor is deemed to own the trust’s assets and pays income
taxes on trust income from the grantor’s personal a s s e t s . Tr a n s a c t i o n s between a grantor and grantor trust are not recognized for income tax purposes, and the grantor’s income tax payments each year, in effect, become taxfree transfers to the trust beneficiaries. The best gifting plans are often executed over time, which there’s not much of between now and 2026. Still, the right strategy could help your family make the most of what they have. Why are my tomato leaves curling? Environmental, chemical or biological changes could be to blame for a curling tomato leaf Written by and Media Inquiries to Laura Muntean As the weather warms up and everything in the garden b e g i n s t o g r o w, s o m e gardeners may notice their tomato plants have twisting or curling leaves. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Adam Russell) Although the yellowing of tomato leaves is one problem, the curling of tomato plant leaves is often quite another. According to Joe M a s a b n i , P h . D . , Te x a s A&M AgriLife Extension Service vegetable specialist from the Department of Horticultural Sciences, based in Dallas, the leaves of the tomato plant may be curling due to many reasons, but environmental, chemical or biological changes are typically to blame. S p e c i f i c a l l y, w h e n Masabni sees a curling tomato leaf, he checks for mites, viruses and herbicide drift as well as one of the latest challenges — herbicide residue in compost. However, curled leaves can also be caused by other issues, including weather and water. Broad mites and viruses in tomatoes Although broad mites are so small that you need a microscope to identify them, they can do significant
damage. The mites attack a variety of vegetable plants and flowers and prefer to feed on young leaves and flowers. The toxins they inject into the leaves make them distort and curl. Tomato plants also can be affected by hundreds of viruses, but the most common one associated with yellow and curling leaves is the tomato yellow leaf curl virus. This virus is spread by the sweet potato or silverleaf whitefly, which can be managed through insecticide oils and soaps. For identification and assessments, the Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory can help based on a sample sent in from the leaves of the plant. Herbicide drift with tomato plants “Tomatoes are especially sensitive to herbicide sprays or herbicide drift,” said M u t h u k u m a r Bagavathiannan, Ph.D., a Te x a s A & M A g r i L i f e Research weed scientist, associate professor in the Department of Soil and C r o p Sciences and Chancellor’s EDGES Fellow’21. Crops and pastures are often treated with herbicides for controlling weeds, and the movement of liquid particles from herbicide, called drift, can severely
damage nearby tomato plants. “Physical herbicide drifts are often limited to few yards,” Bagavathiannan said. “However, vapor drifts that can occur with certain herbicides and environmental conditions can travel for miles. While minor damage may not kill the plant, the damage may result in curled leaves and likely reduced fruit yields.” Wind speeds as low as 5 mph can result in considerable herbicide drift that can be damaging to tomatoes, especially when applied nearby. Though commercial applications of herbicides over large acreage are usually associated with herbicide drift, weed killers for lawns and landscapes often contain growth regulator herbicides such as 2,4-D and dicamba to which tomatoes are highly sensitive. These should be used with caution. Applicators must carefully follow the herbicide label for appropriate use considerations for r e d u c i n g d r i f t , Bagavathiannan said. Herbicide residue lingering in soil Masabni said the most common and biggest challenge he has seen in the last few years is unexpected herbicide residue in
compost, which can remain in the soil for an extended period, unless treated or removed. “In Texas, we have a lot of cattle and horses, and people are taking advantage of manure that they are getting, because it is free fertilizer,” Masabni said. “What they don’t know is that even if the manure has been drying out in the sun for five years and the animal consumed straw from fields treated with the herbicide aminopyralid, that herbicide is still active in the manure. It does not break down. Even through composting, the herbicide residue will survive the heat of the composting.” This problem is not just temporary, once it is in the garden, it is in the garden for a long time, he explained. For gardeners utilizing raised beds, the solution is to get rid of the old soil and replace with new soil not tainted with the herbicide residue. For gardeners working on their own land that has been exposed to herbicides in the soil or the amendments, adding activated charcoal, or biochar, can be an effective solution, but these products can be expensive, Bagavathiannan said. In studies led by the Department of Soil and Crop
Sciences in Bryan-College Station, application of activated charcoal greatly reduced injury to tomato and other vegetables by a number of pasture herbicides. Checklist to consider when assessing tomato leaf curl: * Did you add composted manure or raw manure from a cow or horse? Chicken litter is not a problem. If yes, then herbicide residue may be the most likely cause. If no, next possibility is mites. * Broad mites cannot be seen with the naked eye or a magnifying lens. You will need a microscope to confirm their presence or send a sample to the Texas A&M Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab. * If the leaf curl is caused by mites, the best solution is to spray a miticide. Then new growth will be normal
and plants will be fine. However, the damaged leaves will remain damaged and should be removed. Spray at least two times about one week apart. * If the new growth continues to show curling or twisting, then the cause is herbicide residue in the soil or compost. In this case, remove tainted soil or add activated charcoal. For more in-depth information on assessing curled leaves on tomato plants, view the free AgriLife publication “What makes tomato leaves twist or curl” that provides even more detailed information on assessment and solutions for this tomato challenge.

Editorial: The real cost of border security by Stephen Diebel, Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association second vice president Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association members living along the Texas-Mexico border and in South Texas are on the front lines of a dangerous and costly battle against increasingly brazen illegal border crossers. Hardworking ranchers, landowners and their families experience this crisis every day. For them, it’s far more than a political controversy on the nightly news and far simpler than the national security concerns raised by analysts. It’s their personal s a f e t y, s e c u r i t y a n d
livelihood. It’s the first thing they worry about when they wake up and the last thing they think about at night. It is incredibly sad and unfortunate that our federal government — the entity in charge of maintaining secure international borders — has failed so dramatically in its duty to the American taxpayer. Unwilling or unable to do its job, the responsibility and costs have fallen to state and local governments, private organizations and individual landowners. As a result, Texas &

On June 5, 2022 at 10:23 am the Roman Forest Police Department received a call reporting human remains located in the wooded area near the intersection of Fairway Drive and Putters Green, New Caney, Texas. Upon arrival, Officers discovered a body that was in the late stages of decomposition in the wood line near Fairway Drive. The
and develop creative solutions to mitigate the impacts of illegal immigration. The group will guide association efforts on border security and serve as a resource for policymakers, law enforcement and impacted landowners as we work together to end this border
crisis. As chairman of the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association border security task force, I am proud to take on this challenge and optimistic we can improve the lives of cattle raisers and landowners impacted by this terrible crisis.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was then contacted to assist with the investigations. A vehicle that is linked to two active missing person cases was located close by, and upon further investigation, a second body of a female was located in the trunk of the vehicle. Preliminary identification leads us to believe these are the bodies of the
couple that was reported missing May 25, 2022. The female victim is thought to be Megan Madison Leach, 19 year old female, and the other body which is not yet positively identified is believed to be the registered owner of the vehicle. The motive and circumstances surrounding these deaths are under investigation, and our hearts and prayers are with
the families and friends of the deceased. The bodies will be taken to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy and positive identification. At this time, we do not believe there is any danger to the public. This is an active investigation and no other details can be provided at this time.

things about their work. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, so long as Congress fails to act and the Biden administration refuses to acknowledge the crisis, cattle raisers and landowners will continue to suffer. At Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, we are committed to calling attention to the plight of these families. Lawmakers on every level of government and the public need to know what they’re experiencing. We hope this awareness and the strain on our food supply will spur action, especially in Washington, D.C. To help facilitate this, I am proud to announce Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association recently formed our own border security task force. The group consists of impacted members from across South Texas, staff and select association special rangers. The task force will rely on the extensive experience of these individuals to identify areas of concern

Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association members regularly come forward with personal accounts of burglarized buildings, stolen property, damaged infrastructure and even armed intimidation. The cost to fix their fences and deal with other damages also add up. Not to mention the added burdens and stretched budgets communities incur from increased local law enforcement needs and the influx of migrants utilizing public services in rural Texas. The emotional costs also continue to mount. These are the men and women who make it possible for the American public to order a hamburger at the drive-through or grill a steak on their back porch. Yet, they must constantly worry about themselves or their kids running into armed trespassers on their own property. We a r e i n c r e d i b l y grateful for our law enforcement officers and cannot say enough good
AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today sent a letter instructing Executive Director Dr. Pete Blair to begin providing Texas State University's n a t i o n a l l y recognized Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) programs to all school districts across the state, prioritizing school-based law enforcement. Governor Abbott also requested ALERRT to provide an after-action debrief of the shooting at Uvalde once the investigation is complete and of other relevant situations to school administrators, law enforcement, and others charged with keeping our Texas schools safe. "We sadly recognize we cannot do anything to bring back the precious lives that were taken; however, we must do everything in our power to prevent the same tragic ending from happening again,” reads the letter. “An important part of these prevention efforts must focus on the proper training of law enforcement and school adminis-
trators on how to respond when they face the threat of an active shooter on their campus. This vital training, which is delivered by veteran first responders with proven experience in active attack response and police training, will help law enforcement on school campuses better respond to these situations.” ALERRT is designed to equip first responders with effective strategies to respond to active attack events. The ALERRT training is provided by veteran first responders with proven experience in active attack response and has served over 200,000 first responders across the nation. The program includes 16 hours of training in team movement, room entry techniques, approach and breaching the crisis, shooting and moving, as well as post engagement priorities of work. The vital training has been shown to shorten response times and strengthen law enforcement abilities. Training will prioritize equipping school-based
law enforcement with the necessary skills and knowledge to quickly and effectively respond to active shooting events in Texas public schools. Read the Governor's letter. Governor Abbott has taken significant action to provide all available resources to support the Uvalde community following the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School. Those actions include: * Initiating the State of Texas' comprehensive plan to assist and support members of the community, including co-locating state agency representatives to the Family Assistance Center for onhand assistance in finding benefits. * Issuing a disaster declaration at the request of local leaders to accelerate all available state and local resources to assist the Uvalde community. * Requesting Te x a s l e g i s l a t i v e leaders convene special legislative committees to begin examining and
developing legislative recommendations on school safety, mental health, social media, police training, firearm safety, and more. * Directing the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) to begin i m m e d i a t e l y conducting comprehensiv e school safety reviews to ensure all Texas public schools are following the appropriate procedures to maximize school safety. * Directing the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to provide strategies to m a k e Te x a s p u b l i c schools safer through heightened safety standards. * Investing an initial $5 million into establishing a long-term Family Resiliency Center (FRC) in Uvalde County to serve as a hub for community services, including access to the critical mental health resources. * Working with the OneStar Foundation to create a one-stop webpage for donations to support the victims' families, teachers, and the Uvalde community.

Devotional CHOOSE A TIME AND PLACE OF REST FROM WORKING Spreading the Word
By Gail J. Box

I know how all of us love to be with family and vacation sometime during t h e s u m m e r. A n d , unfortunately, things have developed with high cost of trips, costly fuel, and lack of food in many places. So, what shall we do? Parents with children may take picnic lunches and find small places to visit during these days. Or, for a bigger venue, if you live near a beach along the coast, maybe a sun-filled vacation is good to consider there. I know I’ve read in Genesis so many times about God creating our lovely earth for our “playground” and then
saying, “and God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:2. ) Worried about gas prices? Let the children sleep in tents in the backyard…or if they are afraid, fix up their rooms with “sheets” as tents. Let each one choose to be a Bible character (if they’re old enough) and tell or read a story of that person in a garage made into a “stage” of sorts. If your family decides to do this, you may be creating singers, or dancers, or even musicians in your family! And don’t forget to take time at night to “star – gaze” outside. You might even pray for God to send a shooting star your way! I asked, and it happened to me one

summer. Jesus, on His journeys with His disciples, would spend many nights very near the Sea of Galilee with His disciples. That’s where Peter loved to fish. The last few times Jesus was with the disciples at the sea, He asked Peter to bring in the net where they had been fishing: “Jesus said to them, ’Bring some of the fish which you have now caught.’ Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish; a hundred and fifty-three. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.” John 21:10 – 11.” As Jesus led the
disciples in and around the Galilee Sea, John would follow Him, writing about many incidences that are mentioned in the Book of John in our Bible. So we, also, can write about the wonderful summers with our children to preserve the memories of our summer adventures with them. We did that, and our son still (many years later) likes to look at those picture albums when he comes to visit. to ports in Mexico. And that goes on all year long in Galveston Or you might decide to drive for only three or four hours from your home to no particular town, look around, have lunch, and then drive back home using a different route. We made many trips like that. Then next time you go, you might decide to take lunch with you and then at noon, search for a park or any place to lunch at an outside venue. And who knows? Your vacation may only be a few blocks away at a nice park or an inside museum. That way, no
gas is necessary, and very few museums charge a fee to come in and look around. However, be aware of your surroundings, and ALWAYS pray for safety in every place you go to….close, or far away. There is wisdom in having prayer for all your journeys. And be reminded for any trips, close or far away, of this scripture: “ The hand of our God is favorably disposed to all who seek Him…” Found in Ezra 8:22a. Have a wonderful summer, Readers!

down 25th place. This, out o f 8 2 Te a m s f r o m 9 different Divisions. All Totaled the MISD Fishing Team had a combined weight of 43.13 pounds. By all accounts this event was highly successful, with Lake Conroe and Montgomery showing the THSBA and the Teams across the State what Lake Conroe and the Montgomery Area are all about. Also, the Student Anglers of the Houston Area defended their “Home Turf” by claiming 1st & 2nd in the Divisional Challenge. Pearland Dawson led the way for the Bayou Division, and the M I S D F i s h i n g Te a m leading the way for the Houston Division’s 2nd Place finish. The MISD Fishing Team would like to thank all of its’ many sponsors, parents, captains, school administrators and staff for all the support we received during the season. We would also like to thank the Montgomery County News, for allowing us the opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of the students of MISD.
