Texas Congressman Brady Celebrates Local

A Letter Students Appointed to Military Academies from the Weekly Board of Gas Prices Directors (June 15, 2020) - Texas gas prices have risen 8.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.81/g t o d a y, a c c o r d i n g t o GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations. Gas prices in Texas are 26.0 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 58.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $1.39/g today while the most expensive is $2.69/g, a difference of $1.30/g. The lowest price in the state today is $1.39/g while the highest is $2.69/g, a difference of $1.30/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 4.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $ 2 . 0 9 / g t o d a y. T h e national average is up 23.3 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 57.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa$1.86/g, up 8.6 cents per gallon from last week's $1.77/g. San Antonio- $1.79/g, up 12.7 cents per gallon from last week's $1.66/g. Austin- $1.81/g, up 9.7 cents per gallon from last week's $1.71/g. “As gasoline demand continues on the road to recovery, the national average has advanced for another week, making it seven straight weeks of rising gas prices as the easing coronavirus situation inspires more Americans to hit the road," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Data from Pay with GasBuddy shows U.S. gasoline demand rose 2.4% last week to its highest level in over three months, giving renewed confidence that amidst OPEC's crude oil cutbacks, supply will remain in check. I expect the upward trend to continue across most of the country ahead of July 4, with prices perhaps rising another 10-20 cents by then. The one thing that could bring restraint to rising gas prices is if we see a significant second wave of COVID-19 cases, but for now, I'm optimistic that won't happen."

Suggestions For Mindful Eating: The Tuna Melt Food for Thought Diana Anderson

DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com

I have been seriously into tuna lately. It’s funny how food that has previously gone unadored can suddenly come upon your radar screen and become an obsession. For me it started with a very rustic authentic Italian recipe that called for cooked tuna on top of pasta and transitioned into some funky tuna salads and lastly landed on the traditional tuna melt. As American as apple pie, tuna melts prove that the unexpected combination of tuna salad and hot cheese can be deeply delicious. There are many ways to make them, but some rules should not be broken. The tuna melt is an American culinary icon—admittedly a strange one—and so instead of declaring my own rules for the perfect tuna melt; I canvassed the Internet as democratically as possible.

The question was “What makes a good tuna melt?” The range of opinions on the "right" cheese, the "right" bread, the "right" flavorings, the "right" textures and temperatures convinced me that no single "perfect" tuna melt exists. Instead, there's an infinite number of potentially perfect versions, each reflecting the diverse tastes and experiences of the people who make it, if nothing else, the conviction that canned tuna and melted cheese belong together on bread. The resulting suggestions are better than I could have ever come up with on my own because they take this diversity into account. The recipes I created to accompany these commandments are equally diverse: Instead of a single tuna melt recipe, I've listed three, each representing a tuna-melt archetype. There's the "AllAmerican," a diner-esque creation that strips the tuna melt to the basics of fish, cheese, mayo, and white bread. Then there's the "Jewish deli-style," which offers a tuna salad flavored

more assertively with c e l e r y, s w e e t r e l i s h , mustard, onion, and dill. And finally, there's the one with "The Works," which in my recipe's case includes bacon, tomato, avocado, pickled jalapeños, and more, but really just serves as an example of how personalized a tuna melt can become. Here's what matters about the bread: You need to respect its proportions. Too much mayonnaise-y tuna salad becomes grotesque without an appropriate amount of bread to cut its fishy, fatty intensity. But how thick the bread needs to be depends on both its tenderness and whether you're going with an open-faced construction or not. Heartier, more rustic bread with more chew and crust should be sliced thinner than light and fluffy white bread, since it's more work to chew through. The slab of bread used as the base for an open-faced tuna melt, meanwhile, should be approximately twice as thick as the same type of bread used for the two pieces on a closed version

The other important thing with the bread is to toast it properly. A good tuna melt has contrasting textures: melty cheese, fluffy tuna filling, and tender bread that's crisp as can be right on its surface. The risk with most toasting methods in a skillet or on a griddle is that you accidentally add an excess of oil or butter to the cooking surface, since the cooking surface is larger than the bread you will toast on it. The bread, acting like a sponge, soaks it all up, and before you know it you're eating a mayo-rich tuna salad, with gooey melted cheese, on grease-laden bread. It's a gut bomb. Step one in avoiding this result is to brush the bread with fat before toasting instead of adding the fat to the pan or griddle. By brushing the bread you can evenly and thoroughly cover the entire surface of each slice without oversaturating it. I use avocado oil and a silicone brush to keep it light. Step two is toasting both sides of the bread, which, just like with a wellmade grilled cheese, delivers a more pronounced crisp texture when you bite into the sandwich. Step three is to be thoughtful about the fat you choose for greasing the bread. Oil makes for the crispiest toast. Butter is tastier, but its water content can hamper surface crisping and the mayo trick successful for grilled cheese just doesn’t work here because the tuna already has an abundance of mayo. The type of tuna doesn’t matter, what does matter, though, is how you handle the tuna, and the secret is to absolutely smash it into tiny shreds with a fork. Tuna muscle is lean, which means that well-done tuna, which all canned tuna is, is incredibly dry. That dry texture will be detectable in the final sandwich unless

you pulverize the tuna so thoroughly that every last muscle fiber is coated in mayo. It's not hard to do, it just takes a fork or stiff spatula and some committed stirring and mashing. Keep at it until every last flake of tuna has been crushed and incorporated into a light and fluffy cloud of tuna salad. You'll find the tuna also hold and binds with the mayo once it's been completely mashed. One solution came from Serious Eats who recommends adding panko breadcrumbs to tuna salad. A couple of spoonful’s of panko is just enough to soak up and thicken the excess of mayo, but because panko is such an airy bread crumb, the result is a tuna salad that still seems lighter and moister than one without panko made using slightly less mayo. If you don't have panko, don't worry, just cut down on the mayo slightly and do without (don't add other, denser bread crumbs!). As for the mayo itself, in most cases good old Hellmann's (or a regional favorite here is Duke's) is the way to go. Those tend to b e t h i c k a n d c r e a m y, making a tuna salad that's less slick and runny than one made with fancier store-bought or homemade mayo—and I say this as a big fan of avocado oil based mayo. So many cheeses work in a tuna melt. Cheddar, American, Swiss, Gruyere, Pepper Jack—even lowmoisture mozzarella. Which one you use depends on your preferences and the flavor profile of the tuna melt you're making. I like Cheddar on a basic dinerstyle melt, Swiss on a dilland relish-packed version, and Pepper Jack for a tuna salad spiked with pickled chili peppers. Which is to say, you've got options. What matters, though, is that you actually melt the cheese. It is a tuna melt, a f t e r a l l . Yo u c a n sometimes pull this off in a skillet as you griddle the sandwich, as long as there's enough time for the heat to penetrate through the bread to the cheese slices. You can also use the broiler or a hot oven to melt cheese on top of an open-faced melt or on both slices of your bread for a full sandwich. Whatever you do, don't

skip this step, and maybe try not to resort to the microwave, which will steam the sandwich and destroy any crispness it might otherwise have had. As for the tuna fish itself there's a lot to be said for the simplicity of a perfectly made plain mayobased tuna salad on toast with melted cheese. But there's also a world of variation that's possible with flavorings, mix-ins, and sandwich add-ins. Here are just some ideas: * Panko bread crumbs (see above about why) * Celery * Onions and shallots * Chili sauces and hot sauces * Herbs like parsley, dill, tarragon * Capers * Olives * Mustard * Mayo (duh) * Scallions and chives * Relish (sweet or dill pickle) or other minced pickles * Chopped hard-boiled egg * Pickled chili peppers like jalapeños * S o y s a u c e , Worcestershire, and other umami bombs * Bacon * Avocado * Tomato * Lettuce * Spices like garlic or onion powder or coriander seed * Potato chips (particularly salt and vinegar) Some of these are best mixed into the tuna salad, some should be layered on the sandwich, and a few work both ways. That's a large part of the fun of tuna melts—there are so many possibilities, all of them delicious. This is one sandwich that you shouldn’t hesitate to serve for a dinner meal, as it is quite capable of carrying the day. At this point you have everything done for a quick assembly. Your toasted bread is lined with melted cheese and your tuna is made just layer them and decide if you want your tuna kept cold or slightly warmed. If you want it warmed assemble it and grill it in a pan like a grilled cheese for a few minutes and enjoy.

“When Michael Becker o f N e w E a r t h Knowledge asked me to share my thoughts about the question of ‘Why are we here?’ for his upcoming eBook, I assumed he meant “why are we here having this Human Experience on Earth.” Which in my mind boils down to, what's the purpose and meaning of all of this, if any. Is there a point to it?” Folks, as we continue our personal in-sight Series relative to the present home isolation, this week I present a recognized “Expert” in “Getting your act regather and moving on!” Writer Jeff Street is the Sales and Marketing Director & Medicare Insurance Specialist of the Messer Financial Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. Well organized, demonstrating self-motivation, perseverance with the aptitude to achieve both personal and corporate goals. I was kind of amused when I received his invitation because this topic is one of the very first that I wrote about when I started this blog back in early 2015. That article is pretty dated now because my understanding of the greater reality has evolved since then. Hence, I am delighted to have the opportunity to write about this subject again. A MULTIFACETED ANSWER: The question of Why are we here?” doesn't have a singular answer. Like many of the subjects in spiritual metaphysics, the answer is multi-layered and multifaceted. I'm only going to discuss this question from two very distinct points of view, but there are certainly others. Yet, I think the two I've chosen are probably the most relevant and essential.

But before we dive into that, let's take a quick look at what people throughout the ages have thought about this topic. THE MEANING AND PURPOSE OF LIFE? Some believe that we are here by happenstance. That life arose in the universe by a long process of random chance and hence there is no real meaning or purpose to any of it — it just is. And this point of view is okay because we can always choose our own purpose. We can decide for ourselves why we are here and proceed a c c o r d i n g l y. There's nothing wrong with that. But is it possible that there's a deeper meaning to all of this? Is it possible that there's something else going on behind the scenes? From our superficial observations of our world and our universe, it certainly seems like what we're seeing is all there is. If there's something bigger going on, it isn't readily apparent. So, I think it's perfectly reasonable to decide that what we see is all that is. And that it arose merely by virtue of the physical laws and is not by design, and hence doesn't have any inherent purpose or meaning. Yet many people believe there is something bigger going on and that it all has a profound purpose. And if you study the ancient cultures of the world, you'll find that most of them shared this belief. And even though I've been an atheist for most of my life, I've now come to believe that there is indeed something going on behind the scenes and that it definitely has a profound purpose. I've also come to believe that this bigger purpose has a direct relationship to why we are here having a human experience. The human experience is not an accident — it's by design. To u n d e r s t a n d t h e purpose of the human experience and the purpose of each soul's journey through those experiences, you'll need to understand the bigger picture. So, let's start there. EXPLORING THE BIGGER PICTURE! First off, let's reframe the original question in the broader context. The question “why are we here?” then becomes — why did Source decide to create our reality? And why is it playing all the parts in the game? Did you know that Source is playing all the parts in all the realities it has created? Yes, at least indirectly it is, but that's another topic (check out The “Multidimensional Self” to learn more about that). This is one of the big esoteric secrets of existence. Every single soul playing a character in this game (or any other game) is a piece or part of source consciousness! We are all

Source — ultimately, there is only one playing this game. And this is not the only game it (we) created — it (we) are playing many characters in many games! So why is it doing this? Why is it creating multitudes of realities and worlds and then diving in and playing within them? The answer to this question is both simple and somewhat surprising — there is nothing else to do! Let me explain. And to explain this adequately, I'm going to have to review the ultimate nature of reality and existence. THE GROUND OF EXISTENCE. At the very “Ground of Existence” is an intelligence that presides over a field of energy/information. This intelligence has been referred to by many names, but I prefer the term “Source Consciousness.” This field of energy/information that this intelligence presides over, we could refer to as the Source Field and Source Energy. Source energy is the stuff that is molded into worlds, into universes, and into the bodies of the avatars that we use to represent ourselves when playing within these worlds. And of course, Source Consciousness is the intelligence doing the molding. That's why Source is often referred to as “The Creator!” “THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN.” But why does it create worlds? It creates them so it can have experiences within them! But what's the point of that? For one thing, having “physical” experiences drives the expansion and evolution of its consciousness! For another thing, it's the only game in town. Source is pure consciousness, formless, and nonphysical. And although we say that the Source field is energy, it's essentially information. In effect, Source is an intelligent and aware information system! And as such, it can only read, process, store, and communicate information between its parts! Natively It can "think" but not much else. Unless of course, it invents a way to have experiences other than that, which it did — the creation of “Realities.” Which allowed it to experience itself as individualized “physical” beings within so-called “physical” worlds. “THE VIRTUAL NATURE OF REALITY! And the really fun part is that in this reality we've carefully hidden both of these facts from ourselves (check out “Constructing the Separation Game” to learn more about that) to make it a more immersive and exciting game! That's why you may be surprised and more than a little skeptical of my assertions. But as hard as it might be to believe, Source consciousness is creating

Writer Jeff Street is a recognized “Expert” in “Getting your act together and moving on!” Jeff Street is the Sales and Marketing Director & Medicare Insurance Specialist of the Messer Financial Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. and playing many virtual reality games — and it's doing it through us! Wholly crap! That's incredible! And here's the deal, it turns out that “virtual” experiences are just as good as “real” experiences. The experiences are real even if the worlds you are having them in are not. All that matters is that those experiences are formative to consciousness — which they most definitely are. And by “formative to consciousness,” I mean they drive the expansion and evolution of consciousness, which is the whole point — because ultimately there is nothing but consciousness! “THE ONE IS THE MANY, AND THE MANY ARE THE ONE!” And the amazing thing is that WE (all of us) are individualized pieces and parts of this consciousness — of source consciousness. How is this possible you might ask? Even though Source consciousness is the one and only consciousness in existence, it is not monolithic. If it were, none of us w o u l d e x i s t . Source consciousness is a composite, a multiplex and a network. It has many nodes of consciousness that are all connected into one larger consciousness. And yes, we (our consciousness) are all those nodes. Source consciousness can subdivide itself into as many individualized nodes of consciousness as it likes. Which allows it to do many things at once — including designing and generating multitudes of virtual realities and playing all the parts in them! The nodes of consciousness that dedicate themselves to playing parts in the so-called “physical” realities

have been referred to as Souls. Souls are parts of Source that are many levels of subdivision removed from the root of the source consciousness system. With our review of the big picture complete we can now explore the question of “why are we here” from the perspective of the soul. “THE JOURNEY OF SOULS.” Everything a soul experiences, while playing parts in various realities, contributes not only to its own learning and growth, but to that of Source as a whole. All experience, and all knowledge and wisdom derived from that experience, trickles up through the network of consciousness to the root node. It all accumulates at the top — it all accumulates in Source itself. From the perspective of the souls playing parts in this reality, we call it learning, we call it growth, but what we're really talking about, is the expansion and evolution of our consciousness. And because our consciousness is part of a composite consciousness (that is, Source), our expansion contributes to its expansion, and our evolution contributes to its evolution. Hence, ultimately, we are here to contribute to the expansion and evolution of source consciousness. And having experiences within virtual realities does that in a big way. You are here to enable the divine purpose of the Universe to unfold. That is how important you are!— Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now “THE INDIVIDUAL SOULS JOURNEY!” Yet, within this context of our larger purpose, each soul has its own specific reasons and purpose why it plays the

game of being human over and over again. Each piece of consciousness, each soul is on an extended journey of human experiences, gradually learning, growing, and expanding and evolving its consciousness. It's like a school with many grades or a game with many levels. And at every step of the way, it's choosing the themes it wants to experience, and the potential lessons it wants to learn. It's going through a progression of learning and growth that is specific to it, but helpful to the whole. The EARTH GAME AND THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE: (Like all realities) are chosen both because it is fun and interesting and because it's formative to our consciousness. In a sense, it’s both an entertainment game and an educational game. So, the soul does desire to have fun, but it's also trying to learn and grow. And here's the thing, what drives learning and growth the best is challenge and adversity. So, remember that, and you won't complain so much — after all, you did sign up for this. Everything ultimately serves a higher purpose. There is so much more I could say about the journey of souls, but for now this is enough. “THE BOTTOM LINE.” Source is expanding and evolving through us and our experiences! Source is accumulating a vast amount of experience and derived knowledge and wisdom through this process that we are integral parts of. U l t i m a t e l y, w e a r e Source, and Source is us, and we are truly all one. This is the magnificent truth of what we are and why we are here!” “All my love, Jeff!”

BRADY BRIEFING: Tackling Injustice Conroe, Tex. - How do we tackle injustice – racial, economic and other forms? How do we do more to heal our country? I believe that in order to enact real change, we need real solutions. We ought to come together – every party, everywhere – and not just address these issues, but prevent them going forward. Of course, building trust between law enforcement and our communities will not begin in Washington – that will start at home. Having a healthy, engaging, challenging dialogue is the first step in creating tangible reforms. H o w e v e r, s i m p l y painting all police officers

in broad strokes is not the right response – because the vast majority of our nation’s police officers support and protect our communities. So rather than defunding the police – a dangerous idea with historically harmful results – we must invest more. To prevent the bad apples from getting in, we should invest in attracting the right people. It’s not enough to terminate the bad officers after – let’s prevent them from being on the force in the first place. Plus, when it comes to good reforms, funding is necessary for things like body cameras, recruitment efforts, and anti-bias training.

Bottom line – let’s work towards the goals of protecting human dignity and civil liberties for all, insisting on equal treatment, keeping our communities safe and holding accountable those who abuse their authority. *** This past weekend, I hosted my annual Military Academy send-off breakfast to honor the students from the Eighth Congressional District who were offered military academy appointments. It’s always a blessing to meet these exceptional young people

who have a heart for service and who stand out from crowd because of their years of hard work, and to personally congratulate them on earning their prestigious appointments. Our featured speaker this year was Lt. Col. David Yebra. The son of a Mariachi musician, Lt. Col. Yebra is a West Point Graduate and Army veteran who served our nation for 24 years. He was awarded four Bronze Star Medals during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and is now Director of the Training and Leader Development Division of the Texas

Department of Criminal Justice. It was an honor hosting Lt. Col. Yebra, and listening to the wisdom he had to share with those following in his footsteps. Although our celebration looked a little bit different this year, the accomplishments and triumphs of these students will always be something to celebrate, and I wish each and every one the best of luck on their next adventure! *** The May Job’s report is welcomed good news for the American people. 2.5 million jobs were added

versus the 7.5 million projected loss, and the unemployment rate beat expectations. It’s my hope that we have passed the trough of the pandemic’s damage. We will continue to improve as America’s economy reopens – but we must continue to focus on getting the 41 millions Americans currently without jobs back to work. If we don’t reconnect workers to available jobs, more businesses will fail, the economic recovery will be slower, and the painful recession will last longer.

The Alamo Battle Wasn’t Over Slavery, And The Cenotaph Should Remain Where It Is

By Jerry Patterson Enter “Alamo and slavery” in your web browser and you’ll find innumerable articles claiming the iconic battle of March 6, 1836 essentially had no other purpose than to preserve and protect the vile institution of slavery. Last month a San Antonio Express-News columnist, Elaine Ayala, wrote a column titled “The Alamo will be remade into a 21stcentury monument to the Confederacy.” Marina Starleaf Striker of the Express-News referred to the recent Black Lives Matter protestors as marching to the Alamo because of the Confederate monument there. In fact, the Alamo Cenotaph, a monument to those defenders who died there, was their target. Other than “C” being the first letter in the words “Cenotaph” and “Confederacy,” there is no connection or similarity. San Antonio Council Member Robert Trevino, the go-to guy in city government for all things Alamo, appears to share with Misses Ayala and Striker the opinion the Alamo needs to be viewed through a new and different lens. In a press conference the day after the Cenotaph was defaced with spray paint, Mr. Trevino seemed more focused on expressing his belief that the future of the Alamo lies in promoting “unity,” “healing,” and “inclusion,” than he was focused on the heinous act of defacing what is in effect a grave marker to the Alamo’s heroic defenders. No Mr. Trevino, “unity,” “healing,” and “inclusion” should not be the objectives of the massive Alamo project currently underway.

A complete and factually accurate telling of history, with emphasis on the events of 1836, should be the only objective. Politicians trying to make us “feel good” instead of promoting history is not what San Antonians or Texans want for their Alamo. If Texas’ rebellion from Mexico was all about slavery, the March 2, 1836 Texas Declaration of Independence, which is not without specificity, should tell us that. Listed therein are approximately twelve major grievances against the Mexican government and General Santa Anna. The Mexican prohibition of slavery is not mentioned anywhere. The primary grievance was Santa Anna’s abrogation of the Mexican Constitution of 1824 and his centralization of power in the national capital, Mexico City. If Ms. Ayala’s belief that the Alamo was all about slavery had merit, how do we explain the non-slave holding Mexican states of Z a c a t e c a s , Yu c a t a n , Tabasco, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas also seeking independence at essentially the same time? The answer is simple. Texas, and the other Mexican states, shared the same list of grievances, especially Santa Anna’s rejection of the Constitution of 1824 and replacing it with His Excellency himself. While the grievances were shared, the results were not. Texas became independent; the others didn’t. It was rebellion against tyranny by a half a dozen Mexican states. The Mexican prohibition of slavery was not even being enforced in Texas. Texans didn’t die at Goliad and the Alamo

defending slavery. This historical stupidity by many politicians and much of the press is in large part responsible for the defacement and destruction of monuments happening today. The Alamo Cenotaph has been the target of several mob assaults over the past week. There will be more, both now and in the distant future. Inexplicably, the Texas General Land Office and the City of San Antonio are hell-bent on making the Cenotaph even more vulnerable to another anarchist, or anarchist mob, armed with cans of spray paint or sledgehammers. They now intend to move the Cenotaph south and outside of the Alamo’s original footprint into what will be designated as a “Free Speech Area.” What can possibly go wrong? Forcing all the future protestors, a.k.a. unruly mobs, to assemble aside the Cenotaph is akin to providing a blank palette to those who think they have something to say using an aerosol can. As a retired Marine, I know that increasing the size of an area to be defended, and therefore increasing the perimeter to defend, makes defense more difficult and requires more resources. This is a really dumb idea. There are other reasons the Cenotaph should remain where it is. Perhaps the most obvious is there’s simply no reason to move it. If we could recreate the Alamo as it was in 1836 moving might make sense, but we can’t. Moving the 80-year-old structure risks destroying some of the marble panels. Moving will disturb and desecrate the graves that lie in Alamo Plaza. And the Cenotaph

was placed by the sculptor Coppini, the Governor of Te x a s , a n d t h e C i t y Government of San Antonio specifically where it is because that is the very area where the largest number of defenders were killed. The defacing and destruction of monuments in Austin and San Antonio and across the U.S., even the Lincoln monument at our nation’s capital, prove these thugs have no knowledge of or appreciation for our history. We should do more to protect our heritage and monuments instead of placing them in more vulnerable locations and inviting the mob to enjoy free speech with cans of spray paint. It’s time to end the retroactive revision and destruction of our history. The Alamo Cenotaph should remain where it is. Jerry Patterson Jerry Patterson is a former Texas State Senator, f o r m e r Te x a s L a n d Commissioner and retired Marine Vietnam veteran. He is most known for his passage of the Texas concealed handgun law in 1995. He was chosen as “Texan of The Year” by the nonprofit Texas history preservation organization “Celebrate Texas” for his efforts to preserve and promote the histories of all Te x a n s w i t h s p e c i a l attention to the Tejanos of 1836. He passed legislation establishing the Juneteenth Commission for the purpose of placing a monument on the Texas Capitol grounds to that unique Texas holiday. He is retired and lives in Austin, Texas.

The Father, The Teacher, And Head Of The Home Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

I’m sure you’ve already guessed that Father’s Day is fast approaching on Sunday, June 21st. My hope is that many fathers will read this to know how important their role is in the family. God set it up that way. If we start looking into family genealogies, they begin with fathers, and where the first fathers lived. That’s where we find out the nationality of our

original backgrounds. Even Jesus’ genealogy is listed in Matthew 1:1 through 1:7. It begins like this: “The record of the genealogy of Jesus, the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham, etc.” Of course, God is Jesus’ heavenly Father, birthed through the Holy Spirit. So Adam is the first father on the earth. I also listed “The Teacher” in the title of my writing for this week. I believe all dads should know that first and f o r e m o s t , a f a t h e r ’s position is to teach his

children. Luke says in Luke 6:40: “A pupil is not above his teacher, but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.” Young children always love for their dads to read short stories about Jesus and His disciples, or even about Moses and Joseph.. The children’s minds will be more likely to develop an appreciation for God’s word and that will give strength to their development in the areas of love and caring for others. Then, teaching is a form of training by the father. In Proverbs 22:6, Solomon gives us another short verse that I believe is for fathers.

It says: “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” We have husbands as fathers and teachers, so next, we’ll look at them as the head of the whole home – wherever it may be. The man of a household carries great responsibility. God set it up that way. In Exodus 2 0 : 1 2 i n G o d ’s Te n Commandments, it says; “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord you God gives you.” Still in the Commandments in verse 20:8, God is right to the point as He says: “Remem-

ber the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” For the Jewish people, that day is Saturday. For the Christians, it is Sunday. In these days, I can look back and see how my mother took my father’s place, as she saw to it that I attended church every Sunday. So, I encourage all fathers to “take up the mantle of ‘head of the house’” and present and read the wonderful Bible stories to their children and grandchildren. In these times, our children do need a strong, loving, and kind father, just as we all need a kind, strong, and loving God to

help us through life. For a Christian family of today, Solomon wrote these words in Proverbs 1:8-9: “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching; Indeed they are a graceful wreath to your head and ornaments about your neck.” I hope that all the fathers here will know and be aware of how thankful we are to have men who know how to raise their children well and be the best father they can be to all their family. I wish each one of you a wonderful Father’s Day this Sunday!

supposed to be here. You should have given up years ago, but you were born to run. People said you couldn’t make it, they said you would fail. They said your business would fail, your job wouldn’t last, your marriage would fail, your children would fail, your church would fail, they said you wouldn’t stay sober. They said you couldn’t live clean, that you’re just a “footmen.” But today, we wake up, get up, toughen up & run. Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, I have not run in vain, neither labored in vain. I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the

kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; “Shout, I’m Running With The Horses.”

Running With Horses Jeremiah 12:1-5 New International Version (NIV) Everybody has tough times. It is how we deal with our problems that determines our future success. Jeremiah complained, questioned and even accused God. Do you ever feel like sometimes God forgot about you? God, you’ve done good so far, but lately “Not so good.” Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do evil/mean people enjoy life. Why do they seem so happy? Many times, we act as if God is short on blessings. Your neighbors are blessed and you are not, or at least not the way you want to be

blessed. So, you get jealous, upset, frustrated and mad. Ephesians 3:20 “God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” In the process of time, too many in the church have forsaken the commandment of God to love Him as well as others that transgress against Him. We all live around people who promote sin. The church has begun to look more like the world than the world looking like the church. If our nation is in trouble, maybe it’s not the sinner in our nation, maybe it’s us. It’s not the government’s job to save America, God has commissioned the

church. It’s time the righteous started living righteous. Here is how God responds to Jeremiah and to us. Jeremiah 12:5 says, “If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, then how can you contend with horses?” Footmen can’t take you out, you have reserves along the way, you have oil in your lamp, springs of water in your spirit and you’re headed in the right direction. You’re headed for the end zone. When things get tough, you just get tougher, you excel under pressure. You have peace in your heart because you have learned and trained to run with the

h o r s e s . Yo u ’ r e n o t distracted by the footmen. If you can’t take care of the little things, how will you ever learn to run with the horses? How will He prepare you for bigger, more powerful and significant things if you can’t even make the bed and wash the dishes. If you won’t even pick up and study the Bible? You were created to run with horses. G o d e x p e c t s i t . I t ’s supernatural. Horses are strong, fast, have endurance and stamina. They even rest while standing. God expects you to be stronger, faster, & more enduring. People said you’re not qualified, you are not

Children Safe Harbor receives $50,000 donation from Woodforest Charitable Foundation Montgomery County, TX (June XX, 2020) Children’s Safe Harbor has recently received a $50,000 donation from Woodforest Charitable Foundation to help children and families who are experiencing trauma from abuse that is further impacted by the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. Children’s Safe Harbor’s mission: To achieve justice and healing for every abused child and their family and to engage our community in realizing our mission. As a nationallyaccredited nonprofit children’s advocacy center organization serving M o n t g o m e r y C o u n t y, Walker County, and San Jacinto County, Children’s Safe Harbor is part of a nationwide effort to heal the trauma and facilitate justice for children ages 2 through 17 and their families. The funds received by Woodforest Charitable Foundation are supporting Children’s Safe Harbor’s implementation of tele mental health capabilities given the CDC’s safety guidelines. They have purchased laptops and mobile forensic equipment for staff to work remotely with clients and to continue professional training in new modalities. New therapy materials such as art supplies and workbooks to

help children process trauma have also been purchased. According to Dr. Victoria Constance, Executive Director of Children’s Safe Harbor, teachers are the number one reporters of child abuse across the nation. As schools closed, and families were sheltering in place during the coronavirus pandemic, the need to reach children in unsafe environments hit a critical marker. Public awareness campaigns in April were geared toward educating the community to report suspected abuse to the Texas Hotline: (800) 2545400. While reports of suspected abuse were down 40%-60% statewide, the children’s advocacy center provided the following services to children and families between March 16 through May 31: * a total of 955 hours of mental health services (423 via phone, 360 via tele mental health, and 172 in person); * 1,078 child abuse reports were reviewed from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services; * 346 forensic interviews were conducted on site; * 31 pediatric sexual assault examinations; * and 210 parents and/or guardians were provided

Pictured from left: Kim Marling, Executive Vice President of Woodforest Charitable Foundation; Victoria Constance, MSPH, Ph.D., Executive Director of Children’s Safe Harbor; Charles Marling, CFO and Treasurer of Woodforest Charitable Foundation. with support and information through their family advocacy department. “ We a r e e x t r e m e l y grateful for the support we’ve received from Woodforest Charitable Foundation as part of their outreach to assist children

and their families during these stressful times,” said Dr. Constance. “Their generous contribution is helping us meet the unexpected demands for our services as families navigated this unprecedented pandemic. We have

seen an incredible increase in violence in the cases referred to our children’s advocacy center. These earmarked dollars are going a long way to support our families that are in crisis for multiple reasons.” If you suspect a child is in

immediate danger, call 911 or (800) 252-5400 for the Texas Child Abuse Hotline. For more information and to discover how you can help, v i s i t www.ChildrensSafeHarbor. org.

Lake Conroe: The Houston Metro Fishing Destination

Lake Conroe is known as Houston’s aquatic playground. But anglers know it as one of the top fisheries not only in Texas but in the United States. With a bass fishery among the leading in the number of 13 pound plus or better bass c a u g h t i n Te x a s a n d tournaments ranging from the Bassmaster Classic to the Toyota Texas Bass Classic held on its waters, Conroe is a bass angler’s dream. The lake is also known for an impressive population of crappie and pursuing them is a top pursuit of local anglers who live along the lake. Catfish however may be Conroe’s greatest gift to anglers. From catching limits of pan-sized channel cats in the summer to massive blues in winter, Conroe is a true catfish hotspot year-round. There is something here for all freshwater anglers. Enjoy this fishing calendar and get out to fish Lake Conroe. January: Hybrid Stripers The hybrid stripers should be schooling around ledges along the river channel. Find the schools of shad and you will find the hybrids. This time of year, they will run shad up on these ridges during the day they will move deeper around the area. Find the depth the bait is in and you will find the fish. As the water temperatures drop they will be in the 30-40 foot depths. Live shad will be the bait of choice in deeper water but a Storm swim shad will work as long as you can control your retrieve to keep the bait in the depth where you have located the fish. The depths will vary from one day to the next. Today they may be in 20 foot of water and tomorrow they may be in 40 foot. It all depends on the schools of shad.

February: Big Catfish! Catfish this time of year can be pretty big! Fish the main lake points between the creeks in anywhere from 10 to 20 feet of water for big blues and eating-size channel cats. I normally bait an area using cattle cubes (AKA range cubes) and the 1 1/2 to 5-pound channels will show up and occasionally you'll have a big blue cat make the rounds. Anglers have been catching a lot catfish between 20 and 60 pounds! You can get them to bite on stink baits, chicken livers, bait shrimp or cut shad. March: Trophy Hybrid Stripers This is the time to catch trophy fish. Hybrids will be all around the lake on main lake points and humps. The use of electronics is a necessity! Find the schools of shad and you will find the hybrids. This time of year they will range in the water column from 28 foot to 40 feet. Simply, find the depth the bait are in and you will usually find the fish. Live shad will be the bait of choice but the Storm swim shad will work if you can control the depth. April: Hybrid Stripers Still Hot The hybrid stripers will begin to school on the surface in the morning and will be easy to catch on surface baits and swim shad swimbaits. They will be all around the lake on main lake points that have shallow sandy bottoms. Find the schools of shad and you will find the hybrids. This time of year they will run shad up on these points early and late in the day. During mid-day they will move deeper. Again, find the depth the bait is in and you will find the fish close by. There are times when the fish will stay on the surface for the biggest part of the

morning. This usually happens when it is overcast and calm. Live shad will be the bait of choice in deeper water but a swim shad will be the one to catch bigger fish in the shallower water. May: Crappie are Deep on Brush The crappie are going to be close to deep water jumps with brush on them. The best way to catch them will be on minnows or crappie jigs. When crappie jig fishing, the color doesn't matter so long as there's some chartreuse color in it somewhere. Control your depth and keep your bait just above the brush, not so much in it, and you will do good! June: Crappie and Brush Piles Now we are in the time of the year where the crappie will be finished spawning and move out to the brush piles this time of year. Focus on brush in 12 to 14 foot of water early in the mornings and as the day wears on move out to the 16 to 20 foot brush piles. Use minnows rigged up on a slip bobber with a bobber stop tied to the line so you can adjust the depth so the minnow swims just above the brush. This method has proven itself over several year and helps you avoid snagging in the brush. When using a jig, always know the shallowest point of brush and use the countdown method: (1001,1002 and so on). This keeps the bait where you want it without hanging up. The kicker to the whole thing is if you get distracted you will probably hang it up. For jig fishing, using a 6-8 pound line is preferred so there is not much room for error. July and August: Hot Catfish Action Returns in the Summer Months! Locate stumps lining the

river channel edge and tie off in 20 to 25 foot of water. Use a bag of cattle cubes to bring the fish to you. Dump half of a bag of cubes on two different locations and come back to the first. Then, tie up and get your boat back in the same position. Using a spinning reel with a treble hook, an 1/8 ounce egg sinker and a piece of cut sponge wrapped around it; dip it in the bait and drop it to the bottom. Stay in contact with the bottom raising the bait up and down slowly until you feel some resistance. Then set the hook! On most days you can catch limits of fish in just a few hours. September: Largemouth Bass With the first cold fronts of the year beginning to move in, the bass will begin to feed on shad in preparation for the cold weather when they will begin to selectively feed. This is good for fishermen who love aggressive strikes that a spinnerbait can bring. If you’re on the water this time of year immediately after a cold front (up to the 3rd day after) and it is at daylight or an overcast day, locate the rip rap rock around the lake and start by throwing a small single blade spinner bait at the rocks then retrieving it back at a very fast rate where the bait is waking the surface. This is a very productive and very fast way to catch a number of fish that will attempt to pull the rod out of your hand. The next thing to try would be a Pop'r or a Zara Spook or other top water lure. Work these baits in the same areas and alternate between the spinnerbait to determine which the bass want on that particular day. Later in the day move out to offshore structures and throw crankbaits around them!

October: Cooler Cats The bigger blue catfish will start biting pretty well with the water temperature coming down. The deeper ledges of the lake will hold some bigger fish this time of year. Carolina rig a piece of cut bait along the ledge with a one ounce weight, a #8 treble hook and some stink bait. Start off around 12 feet deep and go to 30 feet for some unforgettable catfish action prospects! November and December: Winter Hybrid Striper Bass Schools The hybrid stripers will begin to school along ledges along the river channel. Again, this is a case of finding the schools of shad and you will find the hybrids nearby. This time of year they will run shad up on these ridges during the day they will move deeper around the area. Finding the depth of the bait is important to finding the fish. Live shad will be the bait

of choice in deeper water but the swim shad will work as long as you can control your retrieve to keep the bait in the depth the fish are going to be in. The depths will vary from one day to the next. Today they may be in 20 foot of water and tomorrow they may be in 40 foot. It all depends on the schools of shad and where they are balling up. Conveniently located near the Houston Metropolitan area and just outside the beautiful city of Conroe, this lake is a keeper for anglers serious about their fishing. Deputy Honored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Constable Philip Cash is pleased to announce that this morning in Commissioners Court, Mental Health Deputy Enrique Rupert was honored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for his contribution to assisting mental health consumers. Deputy Rupert was contacted by dispatch on his days off. The dispatcher told Deputy Rupert that they had a man, on the phone, in crisis wanting to talk with him. Deputy Rupert accepted the call and learned that he had spoken with this consumer earlier this year. The consumer advised that he was on a bridge in Corpus Christi Texas contemplating suicide. The consumer stated that he throwing things out of his wallet when he found Deputy Rupert’s business

card. Based on the positive interaction that the consumer had with Deputy Rupert during his last crisis and the fact that Deputy Rupert had told the consumer to call him if he needed anything; the consumer decided to give him a call. Deputy Rupert was able to keep the consumer on the phone, locate his position and have Corpus Christi Police respond and assist Deputy Rupert in getting the consumer off the bridge and into a place of better care that could help him deal with his current mental issues. Everyday Deputy Rupert goes above and beyond in helping citizens and the member ’s mental health community. For this reason, the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constables office nominated Deputy

Rupert for the 2020 100 Club Officer of the Year. Deputy Enrique Rupert was one of two (2) officers in Montgomery County selected to receive this award for his outstanding job performance to the citizens and the mental health community. Constable Philip Cash is proud to recognize Deputy Enrique Rupert and the other Deputies assigned to the Mental Health Division of the Precinct 1 Constable’s Office. These men and women are dedicated to helping people in crisis every day. In 2017, through the support of Montgomery County Commissioners Court we were able to create a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) that responds county wide to anyone who is in crisis.

Kats Help Kats: Freshman Sells Shirts For Scholarships At Sam Houston State University, service is who we are and what we do. Our motto, "The measure of a Life is Its Service,” continues to guide our research, teaching, outreach, and public service daily. This message of selfless service resonates with incoming freshman Madeline Dupont. She knows that Bearkats burn a little brighter and her own life motto is to “be the light.” This summer, Dupont has been a source of light and hope for many during the COVID-19 health crisis. Like most new students, she turned to social media to meet friends

and establish meaningful connections before move-in. Through these online relationships, she learned that some of her future classmates were anxious and unsure about their ability to begin classes in the fall. In response, the self-proclaimed t-shirt lover established a fundraiser in which all proceeds would be donated to the Bearkat Emergency Fund. “I thought selling t-shirts for SHSU students affected by COVID-19 would be the best charity and the closest one to my heart,” Dupont said. “I love t-shirts. I was buying a million of them

from Barefoot and I wanted to create my own. The t-shirt I designed comes in blue comfort colors and has the words “Kats Help Kats” and says Sam Houston State University underneath.” At $25 a shirt, Dupont has already contributed two gifts for more than $300 and plans to continue the fundraiser through July 11. "I thought about all the other kids who might not have the opportunity to start school and it broke my heart,” Dupont said. “I wanted to try and give my fellow Bearkats a chance to have the amazing experiences I know I’m going

to have and the opportunity for a great education.” Dupont will begin her own SHSU journey in the fall as a psychology major and plans to minor in early childhood development. “I chose Sam Houston State for my education because my stepdad went here and had the most amazing time and I look up to him. Also, I heard the Greek life is amazing and I would love to be a part of the sisterhood and make lifelong friends, and lastly, I want to apply to the honors program so I can graduate with honors and challenge myself.”

Wherever her dreams may take her, Dupont has a bright future at SHSU.
