Texas Coushatti Trace Chapter Weekly Supports Family Literacy Gas Prices Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 1 cent per gallon in the last week, a v e r a g i n g $ 4 . 6 4 / g t o d a y, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 35.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.89/g higher than a year ago. The price of diesel has risen 2.6 cents nationally in the past week and stands at $5.80 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $3.89/g yesterday while the most expensive was $5.69/g, a difference of $1.80/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $3.89/g while the highest was $5.69/g, a difference of $1.80/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 4.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.97/g today. The national average is up 37.3 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.92/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $4.44/g, down 3.9 cents per gallon from last week's $4.48/g. San Antonio- $4.61/g, down 6.3 cents per gallon from last week's $4.68/g. Austin- $4.65/g, down 4.6 cents per gallon from last week's $4.69/g. “Finally some relief! For the first time in nine weeks, gasoline prices have fallen, following a broad sell-off in oil markets last week, pushing the national average back under the $5 level with most states seeing relief at the pump," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "I'm hopeful the trend may continue this week, especially as concerns appear to be mounting that we may be on the cusp of an economic slowdown, putting downward pressure on oil. But the coast isn't yet entirely clear. We could see the national average fall another 15 to 30 cents, if we're lucky, by the time fireworks are flying, barring any unexpected shutdowns at a time when the market is extremely sensitive to such." This year our chapter focused on promoting literacy. In the fall, we completed the book drive for Sam Houston Elementary and donated enough books so that each student had a book to take home each night. In May, we distributed “I Like Me” books to their first graders. Our chapter has been sponsoring these

personalized books, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Conroe, for the last several years. Each child gets to keep their book and read it over the summer which helps them retain the reading level they gained in the first grade. The children are excited to see their names, and the names of their teacher and friends in the

book. Principal Paula Nicolini reports she is expecting a marked improvement on the students’ reading achievement on the STARR tests.

Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Food for Thought Diana Anderson

Fans may already know that the 53-year-old actress reportedly ate the same salad every day onset while filming and making the world fall in love with her as Rachel Greene. That’s ten years, dayin and day-out, the same combination of dressed herbs, veggies and grains. And despite the show ending nearly 18 years ago, both Aniston — and her fans — have long cherished the recipe for the hardy, protein-packed salad. A n i s t o n ’s c o - s t a r Courtney Cox revealed this during a 2010 interview while describing the daily lunch ritual of the three leading ladies, including Lisa Kudrow. “It was a Cobb salad that Jennifer doctored up with turkey bacon and garbanzo beans and I don’t know what,” she told the L.A. Times. The famously healthy Anniston has kept up her

Looking into the details of this salad Garbanzos were named a top tend food choice for 2021 by Whole Foods. Garbanzos have been called “a prince among pulses” and even “the new cauliflower,” indicating that they’ve gone from back-of-thepantry to kitchen staple status. And not

surprisingly, since their relatively neutral taste makes them a versatile base for many products and recipes. Indeed, there’s more to garbanzos today than hummus. So, what are their benefits, are there any downsides to eating them? Garbanzos and other legumes are some of the most nutritious f o o d s o n t h e planet. They’re a healthy source of fiber, plantbased protein, and a number of vitamins and minerals. F eta is a Greek brined white chee se made from sheep's milk or from a mixture of sheep and goat's milk. It is soft, with small or no holes, a compact touch, few cuts, and no skin. Crumbly with a slightly grainy texture, it is formed into large blocks and aged in brine. Its flavor is tangy and salty, ranging from mild to sharp. Feta is used as a table cheese, in salads such as Greek salad. Since 2002, feta has been a protected designation of origin in

the European Union. EU legislation and similar legislation in 25 other countries limits the name feta to cheeses produced in the traditional way in mainland Greece a n d L e s b o s Prefecture, which are made from sheep's milk, or from a mixture of sheep's and up to 30% of goat's milk from the same area. For many consumers, the word "feta" is a generic term for a white, crumbly cheese aged in brine. When made in the U.S it is often partly or wholly of cow's milk, and they are sometimes also called feta as the U.S. and many other countries don’t follow the protected designation of origin. When buying be sure to read the label if you want (or want to avoid) goats’ milk. While feta cheese provides an excellent source of nutrients like calcium and protein, it also contains high amounts of sodium and saturated fat. Feta is lower in fat

players were awarded an exemption into this year’s championship. There is a large list of decorated players that are ready to compete in the 7th annual championship, including defending champion Emma McMyler of San Antonio. McMyler won last summer’s 6th Women’s Stroke Play at The Club at C o m a n c h e Tr a c e b y carding rounds of 74-6672, a 4-under 212 total, to win by four strokes against Hailey Jones. She will look to win again for the second consecutive year and to become the first player to win this

championship back-toback. Other top players from last year’s championship playing again this year include Auburn sophomore, Elina Sinz (T2). Sinz recently just competed in the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf National Championship and Sinz and her team just fell short in the semifinals. Another top finisher, Camryn Carreon (T4), also competed in the national championship, instead she went as an individual, representing UTSA. Sadie Engelmann of Austin, part of the

Stanford team that recently won the NCAA National Championship, also is in the field for this year’s Women’s Stroke Play. Also set to compete are Montgomery’s Hailee Cooper, who won the 2017 Women’s Stroke Play, and Div. The championship format is 54 holes of individual stroke play. The 30 players with the

lowest handicap index must compete in the championship flight, while the other players will have the option to play in the championship flight. The players who wish to not play in the championship flight will be flighted into additional flights after 36 holes. Live scoring updates, daily recaps, as well as tee-times and pairings, will be available on the TGA website once the action is underway from Traditions Club at Texas A&M.

IF TRUTH “BEE” TOLD By Cheryl Conley

Would you believe that mankind’s future on this planet depends on the honey bee? It’s only been in the last few years that I’ve come to realize their importance. I bet you didn’t know that one out of every three bites of the food you eat depends on pollinators like the honeybee. Some of those foods are avocados, asparagus, broccoli, squash, cucumbers, apples, pears, berries, kiwis, cherries, melons, and more! Honey bees play a vital role in the growth of healthy crops as well. Without the natural pollination carried out by bees, it is estimated that the US could lose from one third to one half of its national food supply.

Bees add beauty to our world, too. About 80% of the wildflowers in the US are pollinated by bees. Can you imagine our beautiful country sides without wild flowers?

MCTXSheriff Investigates Splendora Shooting On Saturday, June 11, 2022, at about 11:15 PM, Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a disturbance in progress with shots fired at a residence in the 26600 block of Carol Lane in S p l e n d o r a , Te x a s . Deputies arrived at the home and discovered a white male, later identified as Thomas Reed, with a laceration to his head. Deputies also learned the two other persons involved in the incident left the location, one on foot and one in a vehicle, with both descriptions provided to area law enforcement. With the assistance of the Splendora Police Department, Patton Village Police Department, and the Department of Public Safety, both persons were located and returned

to the scene. Detectives with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Homicide/Violent Crimes Unit responded. The preliminary investigation suggests Thomas Reed, who owns the residence, was involved in an argument with his son and his grandson, both of whom are adults who also live at the residence. Reed wanted them to leave the home, which they refused, citing they also live at the house. Reed then retrieved a handgun and shot at them. Neither victim was injured. In fear of their lives, both victims used self-defense measures against Reed to disarm him, and during the altercation, Reed suffered a laceration to his head. After the altercation, the victims left the location for their safety.

The investigation led Detectives to believe Thomas Reed was the aggressor in the incident, and he was subsequently arrested and transported to the Montgomery County Jail, where he was charged

with Felony Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon – Family Violence. This investigation is still ongoing, and no further information can be released at this time.

Devotional Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

In this world of chaos and confusion at times, we reach for the God of great compassion to soothe our souls amidst hurtful and dangerous happenings. It’s almost as if we are hesitant to reach for a daily paper. However, those of us who have been with Jesus for a while, know these earthly happenings are a part of this world – not of the world to come. This is a good scripture for us: “ For by grace you have been saved through faith; a n d t h a t n o t

GRACE, PEACE, AND KINDNESS FOLLOW TRUE BELIEVERS of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2: 8 – 10. This “grace” is also called in Christian beliefs: “the unmerited favor of God.” * In other words, we cannot earn our way to heaven. We just know God has picked us to do His will. As we pray,…”Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in

heaven.” Matthew 6:10. In our heart, we know when we have done His will. A true believer is also known by the lack of stress in their life. That person has obviously learned what it is to be able to turn fears, stress, anxiety, and harsh circumstances of life over to God in prayer. We can stand on God’s promises to keep peace in our soul as we turn all things that bother us over to Him. And we don’t just dismiss all problems without praying first. True believers will rely on

God’s word to work out everything which may be “bugging” us at times. Our God is gracious and will help us bear any burdens in life. We petition Him for peace for this lost and dying world in which we live. As He hears our prayers, He will lighten our loads or increase our capacity to help bear the burden a bit longer. In this next scripture, Jesus addresses our burdens by prayer: “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take

My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28 – 30. “Kindness” is a word hardly used these days. Kindness is the state of our heart. Christians should be known as “kind” people. It is a word of action, also. To be kind, we should have a heart of giving which includes praying, and visiting the sick or down-trodden (

meaning the badly treated or oppressed). Jesus on earth was the perfect example of how we can walk in kindness: “But the fruit of the Spirit is: l o v e , j o y, p e a c e , patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23. Like we say: “Practice makes perfect.” *The Oxford American Dictionary - 1999.
