Texas Coushatti Trace Chapter Weekly Supports Family Literacy Gas Prices Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 1 cent per gallon in the last week, a v e r a g i n g $ 4 . 6 4 / g t o d a y, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 35.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.89/g higher than a year ago. The price of diesel has risen 2.6 cents nationally in the past week and stands at $5.80 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $3.89/g yesterday while the most expensive was $5.69/g, a difference of $1.80/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $3.89/g while the highest was $5.69/g, a difference of $1.80/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 4.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.97/g today. The national average is up 37.3 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.92/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $4.44/g, down 3.9 cents per gallon from last week's $4.48/g. San Antonio- $4.61/g, down 6.3 cents per gallon from last week's $4.68/g. Austin- $4.65/g, down 4.6 cents per gallon from last week's $4.69/g. “Finally some relief! For the first time in nine weeks, gasoline prices have fallen, following a broad sell-off in oil markets last week, pushing the national average back under the $5 level with most states seeing relief at the pump," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "I'm hopeful the trend may continue this week, especially as concerns appear to be mounting that we may be on the cusp of an economic slowdown, putting downward pressure on oil. But the coast isn't yet entirely clear. We could see the national average fall another 15 to 30 cents, if we're lucky, by the time fireworks are flying, barring any unexpected shutdowns at a time when the market is extremely sensitive to such." This year our chapter focused on promoting literacy. In the fall, we completed the book drive for Sam Houston Elementary and donated enough books so that each student had a book to take home each night. In May, we distributed “I Like Me” books to their first graders. Our chapter has been sponsoring these
personalized books, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Conroe, for the last several years. Each child gets to keep their book and read it over the summer which helps them retain the reading level they gained in the first grade. The children are excited to see their names, and the names of their teacher and friends in the
book. Principal Paula Nicolini reports she is expecting a marked improvement on the students’ reading achievement on the STARR tests.
